    I remember a conversion I had with Emiko Iwasaki in the mid-2010s. She was pretty bitter about her experience with Arcsys. She claimed she regularly got talked over and had to add a bunch of things to the game she didn't really want- she really wanted to make a more accessible game. I think she now works in MObile gaming. I hope she's doing well. This was the first fighting game with a woman lead designer.

      @@Geferulf_TASHahahahaha , bro …. This game would have done better simpler , she had the right idea just like RIOT is doing with 2XKO (Project L) . The sad thing is that due to cultural circumstances she wasn’t given total liberty with the IP as she wanted. But if you want to criticize her, then criticize the Men leading the simplification of Fighting Games at RIOT .

    I absolutely love this game's visual aesthetic. It gives off the exact vibes of a classic PS2 era JRPG that would've become a beloved cult classic that people would still be talking about fondly for years to come.
    Also Freed's design was totally inspired by John Silver from the classic Osamu Dezaki anime Takarajima/Treasure Island (1978)

    It's amazing how massively important Battle Fantasia is. It didn't just inspire SF4 to go 3D, rather when they did the early alpha tests of SF4 it was TERRIBLE because of the controls. Then they saw a Battle Fantasia machine at the arcade and said "THAT. Do it like THAT." More specifically, the alpha version of SF4 used full animation which made the controls TERRIBLE. 3D fighter style animation in a 2D fighter sucks because all attacks had too many frames. SFEX and Slap Happy Rythm Busters got around this by making the animations play ridiculously fast, but Battle Fantasia chose to force 3D models to behave like 2D sprites, having each frame be hand posed (and I'm pretty sure the hitboxes are in 2D too). This DRASTICALLY improved play control and well...paved the way for everything else that came after!
    Without Battle Fantasia, SF4 would have been terrible and the entire fighting game renaissance may have never happened.

    Coyori was voiced by Umeka Shoji, who also voiced the latest incarnation of Nekomusume in Gegege no Kitarou, making her a rare double catgirl voice actress. Come to think of it, Taokaka in Blazblue was voiced by Chiwa Saito, who also voices all the Tamamos in Fate, which are foxes so she doesn't count as a double catgirl...until you remember she was the voice of Xiaomei in Shining Hearts, who was also in Blade Arcus, another fighting game you should talk about. One thing you forgot to mention when you (briefly) brought up Blazblue is that it was meant to be an easier version of Guilty Gear, because ArcSys assumed GG's high skill floor was killing its potential for newcomers. Seeing as Blazblue was infinitely more successful before GGST, they were probably right.

    • @DanLink9000
      @DanLink9000 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +267

      I would say BlazBlue's skill floor is almost as high as GG's, especially later installments. But the main thing BB had over GG was a good tutorial and better documentation. That what makes fighting games more accessible. Not taking away things characters can do.

    • @Kono_Dio-Da
      @Kono_Dio-Da 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +66

      @DanLink9000 The skill ceiling is arguably as high or higher than some of old Guilty Gear games, but the actual barrier for entry (skill floor) is lower because Blazblue has more intuitive system mechanics, especially in the later games, as well as better visual indicators, such as unique hitsparks for attacking someone when they are invuln, generally better/more readable animations (especially compared to GGXRD), comparatively lower damage without full resources, a hitbox system that uses hit properties instead of shifting the hitbox, so you don't have things like the anti-air beating mids, etc.

  • @Obscusion2
    @Obscusion2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

    This game did something interesting with its boss fight (a super-powered DeathBringer) by essentially requiring you to enter Heat Mode in order to really do any damage to him, as you literally only do like 1 or 2 HP damage otherwise & he has super armor if you're not in Heat. It pretty much forces the player to actually engage with its mechanics & learn how each character's Heat Up works in order to defeat the boss, which is neat.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yes, and i was waiting for a comment suggesting the resemblance that is hard to miss in my opinion. Now after knowing this fact (i didnt know this game except the name) i think its fine to say that SF5's VT is roughly a mix of this old system and KOF 02's max mode - in the sense that it can be cancelled off, and the mode has a draining bar with peculiar "costs" depending on the actions taken (making it not a direct reference to Capcom's custom combos draining meters, but rather a direct reference to KOF 02's max mode meter).
      That creation has an importance that his description didnt emphasize but deserved it. Besides there are very little opportunities to give some spotlight to relevant contributions made by obscure games, as the regular fgc content creation scene tends to stay away from these ideas. (Not to mention the problem that the fgc has become so populated by influential 09'ers that the proper sense of "obscurity" is starting to become clouded. Like too many things are being called obscure today just because the community became more ignorant of istory and the market became actually more limited in options)
      Another example is how less and less people in the community are aware that the franchise that invented "clash" (two normals not ending in damage trade but cancelling) was World Heroes in the early 90s and not GG.

      Not through the playstore/ios app or them licensing an awful 3rd party group that is good at mishandling.

      There's also their successful CCG Shadowverse who's there for so long together with Hearthstone, they just have to reboot to SV2 to grab newer players lol.

      Maybe it is right to call that a concept ahead of its time. It's like the fg scene of the late 00s was not prepared to receive a brand new game that looks like its a fg adaptation of a jrpg. The overall fg culture was (naturally) shaped in a way to easily accept the classic games and whatever else looked like the classic games. Then it took a while for the scene to become more flexible and receptive to very different concepts. Maybe having moving on from the arcade roots was a factor too.
      That reminds me of another product of cultural change in the genre, that is the fact that early fgs focused on basic character designs and basic character types. Even weird ones like Blanka still was basic in a way. And the males were buff and had a strong "fighter aura", just like the females were athletic and had the same fighter aura (Chun Li, Cammy, Sonya, Kitana, Mileena, King, Mai, Sarah, Nina...). But since the mid 90s we slowly started to see subversions from those stereotypes. We started seeing more males and females who lack a fighter aura and look like regular people, and skinny guys, and actual young boys and girls, and elders who dont look like strong fighters. That direction was pushed notably by SNK and Arc Systems in the 90s, and only became stronger since then.

      @@carlosaugusto9821I believe you miss the point of the game. It wasn't made for the fighting game community. It was an on-ramp meant to bring fresh blood in from outside the community.
      I suspect the art style of being a part of that. Fantasy RPG is a large market with little fighter overlap, and the game would catch that community's eye and hopefully draw players in.
      It didn't successfully do any of that, but the attempt was noble.

    0:28 I know I get flack for saying this, but it helps that Strive decided to be about as accessible as SF4 rather than stick to the style established in GG/BB. Same for the newest Melty Blood... I both of them I dropped before even getting anywhere because they were extremely boring to me as a result. Heck, KOFXV is closer to what those series used to be vs. what they are now.
    The relative "failure" of SFV seems to have made a ton of smaller devs try to fill the void to capitalize, whereas ironically SNK and NetherRealm instead went in the opposite way and tried to appeal to hardcore fans (at least when it comes to MKX and 11, haven't touched 1).
    It's a weird time in fighting games where it feels like anime-fighters are trying to appeal to the mainstream while traditional fighters like SF6 and KOF are trying to regain ground by appealing to hardcore niche fans... and in the case of the former I'm not really into it.

It was fully in japanese so I had no idea what was going on completely plot wise and the only thing that really helped me understand was the voice acting since I was used to hearing Japanese as opposed to hearing it. I remember playing it quite a bit and doing everyone's story modes, but I think it was around this time I was realizing I liked fighting games with wackier modes than the usual modes. But I really liked how the characters played and unique aspect they had.

    4:00 "But also by the other Arcys fighter BlazBlue which became THE Arcys series for the next half decade."
    Ah "BlazBlue Central FIction" is a game that is arguably just as complex as "Guilty Gear XRD Revelator," with the game like Revelator having legacy skill, meaning if you haven't stuck with the game since the original back in 2008 you have a MASSIVE hill to climb in learning frame data for each character's normals, gatlings, and overall mobility options that can be used on offense and neutral. Then there are the game's plentiful system mechanics, such as having a half a dozen options on defense that you need to master such as having four ways to block based on specific scenarios for example, and the game having a multitude of wake up options with each having a specific use, and that's not even going into the Drive mechanic, which is a unique action for each character, which there are OVER 35 of, which MOST of the cast plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other.
    Mainline BlazBlue games were HUGE in japan, with it being popular in many Japanese arcades, and as Majin Obama stated in a podcast with Blasted Salami that the series had at one point been up there even with the almighty Tekken in terms of popularity. With many veterans like Dogura ( who is one of the best players in Guilty Gear who uses Slayer) and Fenrich ( who is arguably the best BB player, and currently one the best in DBFZ) representing the series for a long time . Sadly, The series just never took off over here in the west. However, the lack of popularity nationwide doesn't equate to the game's quality.The fact that is arguably the most unique AND complex 2D fighter on the market, but isn't talked about hardly at all in the west was always baffling to me. Especially when I read comments, and watch videos of people in the FGC complaining about how boring fighting games have gotten recently, or how easy it has become and yet will REFUSE to give the game a try. Thankfully, that seems to be changing, for instance Lord Knight, a tournament player who plays a variety of different fighting games recently made a fighting game tier list and put "BlazBlue Central Fiction" near the top, as well as popular Guilty Gear content creators like Majin Obama saying on blasted salami's podcast that "BlazBlue Central Fiction" is HARDER than Guilty Gear Xrd. Even Punk, one of the BEST players in Street Fighter 5 said BlazBlue was among his favorite series. For those who want to see high level game play in order to get a grasp of how hype this game can potentially be for you, I'd recommend a video titled "BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Grand Finals - Evo 2014" on youtube, and while the game represented there is not Central Fiction, I think it works, since Central Fiction is more of an evolution of Chrono Phantasma any way. Other channel's include "Burst Recap" and "Jourdal" for more high level Japanese play.
    Finally, BB TAG and mainline BlazBlue games are two SEPARATE things all together, with BBTAG having it's own set of rules with the system mechanics, and SIMPLIFYING ALL of the characters. It's for these reasons that you can't approach "BlazBlue Central Fiction" in the same way that you would BBTAG.

    And can we talk about Donvalve? ArcSys beat Blizzard by almost a decade with that design. AND they kinda, almost (not really) beat themselves with Olivia and Sin. You know, with both of them using flagpoles. Both this and GG2 came out in the same year, so...
