hey alter. what about using a hairdrier and a metal spatula to peel the finish off without damaging the wood and then using a blowtorch to Yakisugi it.
Ha! Real cool! My firefighter friend just recently found a brunt up Squire strat when he was on call, he got it and gave it to me, so now I got something real cool to do!😄👍

No I always wait at least until it's dry to the touch. I don't want to risk runs and drips.

Any kind of lacquer or varnish but I prefer shellac.

I prefer my natural wood guitars to be modestly braised-toasted,…. flamed but not overdone. Yours are overdone.
