I think the title "experimental" goes to Coils soundtrack, especially tracks like Spiral. But Alexander is a close second.

it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize that the Forward And Back parts are because Alexander can travel through time

I never knew it was possible to develop Stockholm Syndrome for a song, but after fifty minutes in A11 I went from hating to loving it. And it won't leave me. It repeats. Endlessly. A loop. Forward and back, and then forward and back. It is the best song.

I'm too low level to even attempt raids, but a friend of mine is a pro with hundreds of hours of playtime. He *hates* this song, because it gives me war flashbacks. :'D I, however, love this song.

I can't even handle how perfect the FFXIV soundtrack is becoming. The versatility of the soundtrack is mind blowing.
The songs only get better as time passes because Soken is so much better at creating remixes than original compositions.

@@tastykimchiOFDOOM Soken is really good at writing leitmotifs that will build-up themselves through new arrangements during expansion, leading to a big payoff in the end. The greatest example of this is "ascian ticking clock melody" which you first hear in The Tempest ambient theme and which culminates with "To the Edge" during The Seat of Sacrifice.
I paid 30 bucks to listen to this every time I pull out the mount and it has already paid for itself with how much joy it brings me
The lyrics sounded like

All RDM jokes about the lyrics aside, if you listen and track the movements, they're always moving forward no matter how many times they go back. I think about that a lot.
This is a really nice throwback to Nobuo Uematsu's debut, his work on Cruise Chaser Blassty for the PC-88, one of Square's earliest games. And honestly, if you listen to the original, this is really good for what they had to work with.

I don't know anything about the FF series, I just know that this song is just awesome.
Therr was a glitch involving moving forward and back. It makes you level up your spells and proficiency.

@@GBAura You select a move to use on a target, but you never actually cast the move. It still gives you the move experience but you don’t use the turn. Due to how classic Final Fantasy animations are, it looks like the character steps up to cast the move, but then backs up to change their mind. Hence, forward and back
Stairs have never been so difficult to climb.
This song has a special place in my heart because it was one of the things that got me into FFXIV. I saw this video and was like "What the fuck why is this so cool? I wanna play this raid."
A few months later, I bought the game and sat down and got to A11 within a month. The active time maneuver was the coolest shit ever, I want more of those.

Not gonna lie, when this came into the fight. The first thing I heard in my head. "WHEN I SLAY THE WARRIOR OF LIGHT I SHALL BE THE LEADER OF THE DECEPTICONS!"
Were Alexander or Cybertronian heritage it'd easily have power to rival both Primus the Creator and Unicron the Destroyer. I'd like to think that Alexander would be the scales on which creation and destruction are balanced out. Neither can exist without the other so Alexander would use its powers to monitor and adjust the timeline to ensure that both are kept in balance.
Didn't grow on me at first. But then I spent 40 MINUTES in here on first try. Now I love it.

Yes it's basically Arkh, he use all of its skills, the big attack is also called eternal darkness and the target on the floor he use every now and then are the one from the summoning. but for some reason here they decided to call it Cruise Chaser, which is not as cool as Arkh :p

The name is apparently actually based on a very old Square Game named Cruise Chaser Blassty, featuring first person combat using spaceships that transformed into fighting mechs using the Blassty system. This game's soundtrack was also Nobuo Uematsu's debut project

This song describes this game's gear progression system perfectly lol. You get your full set of token gear after grinding for who knows how long (moving forward). Then a patch gets released and now your are " moving back " to the grind. You eventually begin to increase your item level again after a few months ( one foot forward ).

That is the worst fucking idea. Putting shitty QTEs in an MMO is NOT a good idea.
When people are complaining about the combat being stale, it really can't hurt to add things like this. And I mean, you're given plenty of time to react to it and you should already have the natural reflexes for it from playing this so it works out.
It's not a unique concept at all, it's the very definition of a total fucking cop-out in game design.
I dunno, I've always found QTEs pretty enjoyable to do. I don't see it as a cop-out in A11, just a nice cherry on top of an already enjoyable encounter.
wee187 Literally what functionality does it offer that walking to a jump pad doesn't? There's no challenge, you guys have admitted that by pointing out the ridiculous amount of time you get. It's completely pointless and they'd be stupid to implement it any further.

The Cruise Chaser looks very similar to an Orbital Frame mecha from the Zone of the Enders series, really nice.

Alexander Prime is a pretty fun fight but the song is nowhere as good as this one.

Cruise Chaser Blassty is an RPG by Squaresoft that predates Final Fantasy I. FFXIV's references are always so on-point!

***** That's incredible, I can't wait to fight this thing! And that section of the fight where the party leaps onto it while it blasts the platform to then jump back off at the right time is such a small touch but makes the battle so much more dynamic!
not to forget the Lapiz Lazuli adds that are a reference to the item in ffIX that buffs the Ark summon the more you have. :)

Dude I never would have thought Armored Core! I love that series, I can't wait to see it on current gen consoles.
I've taken too long to make this comment, but i could listen to that first little bit of the song as ambience while watching the Cruise Chaser...cruising through all that glowy stuff from multiple aesthetic angles. It's just so slick and elegant. I really want to do some night driving to a good loop of that part.
The glowy stuff is meant to be a time-stream. Cruise Chaser is a time traveling assassin robot, sent to defend Alexander's heart at any point in time.
That's also why the lyrics are "forward and back", because he's always cruising through time to whenever he's needed to defend Alexander.

I had heard somecallmejohnny reference this song so much and today when playing the raid again with a friend I heard the forward and back and immediately I just laughed going “holy shit, that’s where it’s from”

So thrilled to see that reference get referenced somewhere here. It blew my mind because I got to this a couple days after his FF1 video and I did a spit take with laughter.
Best thing is how subtle this song is. Even the chorus of forward and back sounds like a military alarm, or a siren. Probably because of all the missiles and beams.

I've been saying this since Heavensward, this is SUCH an underrated raid boss. Maybe he's not, but I think daddy cruise chaser doesn't get enough love :c
Wiped 5 times but it was hella fun
Take a look at old runs or guides for the Savage version. Maybe even try it yourself at min iL sometime. He's legitimately one of the most influential raid bosses to this day, with stuff like Limit Cut being used in the 6.3 Extreme and Optical Sight being used in P3S, just for recent examples.
Also helps that his design is amazing, and his boss theme is so recognizable. He's one of the very few 3rd bosses in a tier to get his own theme song, something only matched by lore important bosses like Phoenix in T12 or Omega beetle in O11.

My raid group used to hate this music and mute it. While me, on the other hand, had this shit on max volume chilling out. Alexander had some of the best music in the game and its a damn shame no one runs these instances anymore.

Just finished the boss after losing three times and while waiting for another DPS, we all got time to sit down and just vibe to the music, super catchy.
I'll never understand why they changed his name from Ark when they kept literally every other aspect of the Ark summon here, right down to the Photon and Eternal Darkness attacks and animations.
Still loved the fight and the song.

Yeah, the boss Ark in FFXI was itself a reference to Cruise Chaser Blassty, a Squaresoft game that predates Final Fantasy. I suppose for this incarnation they decided to actually call him Cruise Chaser.
Moreover, Ark's name originally in Japan was "Cruise Chaser" (the direct translation, anyway.) It got changed to Ark in localization.

Looking back at this months later, this was definitely the pug destroyer, you really had to have great healers that knew what they were doing and people really had to nail the mechanics to not get one shot.
