Video showing the trial against Innocence, at the Crown of the Immaculate. The moments preceding, during and following this trial pushed Shadowbringers from being on par with Heavensward to the place of FFXIV's best expansion (according to me.) Glorious.

I always tell people, Vauthry missed his calling in life. After fleeing Eulmore he put together his little sanctum on Mt. Gulg in, what.... a week? And you may or may not like his aesthetic, but by God the man had a stylistic vision and he stuck with it. Different time and place, he'd have been the best interior decorator the First had ever seen.

He played The Lord of Bones on Game of Thrones. Other fun fact: Gaius Baelsar is voiced by the actor who played Roose Bolton. Ardbert by the actor who played Gendry.
In general the voice acting in Shb has been phenomenal, by everyone. But new characters like Vauthry stand out especially. The VA nails this character so damn well.

First time I entered the trial and saw Innocence name on Vauthry. I was like "THIS is Innocence?"
Turns out that was after he fully turned into a Lightwarden.

Yeah, he was a lot like the typical depiction of cherubs; chubby, tiny wings, and the like. He was an egg, in a sense. And [SPOILERS COMING BELOW]
Vauthry is innocent in a way. His sheer ignorance of the truth of things, and being raised as a god by his family due to meddling, he's innocent of the knowledge his own wrongdoing because he thinks he's doing the right thing. No one ever told him 'this is wrong' during his formative years, and likely just encouraged it.
@@Doxham you're right. He truly believed his way was the only way. That he did and has done nothing wrong. Even when he was defeated he still couldn't understand why he lost like it didn't make sense to him because he thought he was the hero.

If he actually _had_ a brain -or much as a shred of sanity - and practicality and human morals to go with it - people would have called him buddha. But, no. You know? if think about it, his name, Innocence, really fits. Heavy spoilers here, but if you're in this comment section I assume you don't care: Vauthry was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was imbued from birth with godly light that me might lead the whole world into the blissful sleep of oblivion. He never saw any of his actions as wrong, he never understood the consequences of his decrees. He was a big fat man-child that thought it was his duty to lead man to "paradise". In a perverse, twisted sense, he was truly Innocence itself.

The first time I saw him I was in discord with my Team and said "He will be the first to die." I was so ready to drop him. When he transformed I yelled 'DAMN IT! Now I have to fight the Archangel Michael!" He was the PERFECT bad guy. I put him right up there with Kefka, Ghalleon (Lunar), and Kagato (Tenchi Muyo). Bad guys I want to kill just because I hear their voice. No redemption arc. Nothing redeeming. total villains with visceral reactions.

@@chokoanders6546 They're not HIS kind. He's a unique being and, from what he was told by his parents, way above them all. I genuinely believe he was twisted enough to not know any better, hence innocent. Doesn't mean he didn't deserve to die, though.
I've seen this take too many times, and it's pretty wrong. Let's not forget how he murdered tons of peasants just so he could keep people enthralled to him. At several points, people try to appeal to his morality, and he's shown to have none. He does things like make people jump off of balconies and mutilate themselves in front of live audiences for committing little to no crime. I don't really think it matters how he was raised or if he was a light warden from birth. Innocence is a very poor fitting name. He is not innocent of anything. He's an absolute monster. If anything, Innocence is the name he gives himself because it's how he sees himself. He is not in any way innocent or absolved of his crimes because of his circumstances.
I love how, even in a video dedicated to just the music, a Dragoon STILL manages to floor tank several times.
It's what we do. Pretty easy to hold threat, too.
My first experience with this trial (DRG Main) was a party of
-2 DRKs
-2 WHMs
And
-4 DRGs
Me being one of the DRGs, and my friends being 1 of the WHMs and DRKs respectively.
No one died, and it went astonishingly quick, despite one of the DRGs never using Disembowl & Chaos Thrust (or any Buffs, Jumps, or Blood)
@@DraconicCatgirl It's always a treat seeing players in lv 70/80/90 content who literally don't know the basics of their job or role. Like a WHM who individually spams cure 1 on every player instead of ever once trying to see what that "Medica" button does.
Funny part is... in the Slums, there's a Vieira (Viis in their case) who said she had a dream that she seen Vauthry with golden locks in a gaudy golden castle.
Something along those lines.

His voice actor really did an amazing job. There were times I legit feared and hated Vaulthry.

This has got to be one of if not the single best song in the entire game. I love it so much.
Last battle of SHB its epic as well.
My favorite has to be phase 1 of the final boss, but this is probably my second favorite.

I cannot express just how much I love Soken. This man is an absolute prodigy in his field. So much of his music is so strong. So powerful. This track in particular creates a feeling for me that I can't even put to words properly. The closest approximation I can draw is "epic". When music has the ability to make you feel things you can't even describe, it proves just how much of a genius the composer is.

I love how this expansion shows us amazingly that everything that is Light associated is not morally good, and everything that is dark is not evil.

Thats the beauty of Shadowbringers, just because someone's ideals or views conflict with your own doesnt necessarily mean they are evil. Good and evil are subjective and only influenced by your upbringing and ideology.
That was the facet that made me so excited for this whole expansion. That entire idea is something I've looked for literally for years. And to see it done so magnificently in the ShB expansion has made me so HAPPY. I love this expansion so.

So when our group saw this opening cutscene of him walking down the stairs, my bf casually said "o lawd he comin" and the rest of us just lost it
I showed this to my mom to share the music with her. She had no context to who Vaulthry was, but she was immediately wary of him. She said "If he has that gait with all this weight he must be one strong mother fucker."

Stormblood he wasn't allowed to shine as it was all just Eastern Themed tracks or like War Anthems. Not to say Stormblood was bad, there were a few standout tracks like the Burn, but for the most part it was probably the weakest of the OSTs imo due to the theme. With Shadowbringers on the other hand it's clear he was given free reign to do whatever he wants and it shows and the results are glorious.
@@smward87 I disagree completely. Stormblood had a ton of incredible tracks and some of Soken's previously best experimentation. Heavensward's OST was comparatively dull. There are some major standouts but by and large the music was worse than Stormblood's. Compare Ominous Prognosticks to Triumph. The only area where Heavensward wins is in the 8 man OST where Soken could make weird shit with Alexander but was kind of bound by remixes in Omega.

Seeing this expansion and fights like this one really makes me wonder what Yoshi P could do if given the reigns of a single-player FF game. I haven't had this much fun with any FF for many, many years.
I don't want XIV to stop anytime soon but I guarantee after he moves on he will make the best single player game to come out of Japan in decades
We already know he's working on another title, which could be the next FF. Or something else, we don't quite know.
Rumor is he's developing FFXVI right now.

Welp, I love this game.
This is so different in tone from anything in Stormblood and I'm all for that. I liked the music from Stormblood, but this is just way more fitting tonally for a boss from this expansion.

I always get really excited the first time I see the AoE's in these fights. "OH, WHAT'S IT GONNA LOOK LIKE? I'LL DODGE IT, BUT HOW BONED WAS I?"
The horns/tuba drops at 00:31 and the piano are my favourite parts of this masterpiece.
I really like the bait and switch they hit you with when it comes to Vauthry's transformation and how much it makes sense. When it happens to Tessleen, she becomes a malformed monster with tears streaking down her face, like she is in horror of what she has become.
But Vauthry, who in this world is "Innocence," becomes beautiful because by the First's current paradigm, he is "free of sin."
The one who ran a hospice for those infected by the light is a beast, while the one who imprisoned people and turned them into literal food is the angel.
the trombone shots during the quieter piano/choir parts just gives me chills.

Innocence gained Nidhogg/Zenos status over one story arc of MSQ. One of the best fights ever.
Thordan VII was above Nidhogg,in fact,Innocence it's like the Thordan from The First. (Thordan still way above in terms of power tho,he had the Warring Triad,Nidhogg eyes and the power of a Primal with a millenia of prayers...)
@@NavytroyXIV i'll have to disagree on the point that Thordan is more powerful. The light aspected aether each warden carries is too great for any single being to hold onto. Titania, the king of the fae folk did manage to take a light warden down but became a more powerful light warden herself. Not to mention the everlasting light giving sin eaters their strength and the fact that Innocence is the strongest Light Warden/Sin Eater.
Even if Thordan beat Innocence...Thordan would just become the new Innocence in his place

No it's not, but I do think Soken took inspiration from FF8 for the soundtrack, since this is the "FF8 expansion" in general. The beginning of the standard boss theme is reminiscent of the start of FF8's battle theme.

This is isn't FF8 ultemecia but this expac is FF8 geared for sure. You can hear the same progression here and there.
Okay I thought I heard it and came here to confirm. It is a tad different but VERY similar, obviously inspired given the FF8 presence in this expac.
I dropped my jaw when I saw that the throne was there only to be the areola in Innocence head like a saint. The environment, the music, the boss itself and the cinematic decisions of this trial were incredibly amazing

Soken Masayoshi san's music has been so transformative in my life ive been adding non stop ost from the final fantasy xiv experience ever since i stumbled upon the game, needless to say i inmediatly fell in love with the story and here we are 3 months later having finished shadowbringers, and man what a journey. I'd like to thanks for having us enjoy your talent mister Masayoshi san and i hope you keep on bringing us such an auditory experience that which you excell this much.

Insanity in definition is trying to do the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. I think it fits him well if you think about it

@@christianrodriguez8577 That's not even the tip of the iceberg of his insanity, it goes far deeper than that. Treating people who are no longer usefull as tools to be discarded whitout concern for their lives or sacrificing people to sin eaters under false promises of ascension. And let's not forget, feeding sin eater meat as food to be distributed. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's another level of insanity and evil right there.

They really were not subtle with this expac. "Question what you've always taken at face value" such as light = good and dark = bad. And literally the entire bible. Archangel Michael, Mt. Sinai (Gulg), the heavenly host, the flood, etc.
FF has never been shy about casting the those that appear on the side of righteousness to be the enemy. Heavensward literally places you against a major religious sect. FF3 revealed the existence of the Warriors of Darkness whenever light got out of hand. FFT doesnt shy away from labeling you a heretic.
You know the music is so damn good when you have to pause the story just to find it on TH-cam and jam out one more time.

All jokes asside, Vauthry didn't deserve the fate that was handed to him. He was manipulated at birth to take on a heavy burden. His parents were cruel and all Vauthry wanted was a place of peace, a paradise.
I did not enjoy defeating him, and I think that was the point in the story, we don't seek these battles for glory. We seek these battles to protect those who can not, he was one such soul.
There is a reason why after every lightwarden the party doesn't celebrate, they bow their heads. These are all victims of corruption.
Maybe that's why he's called Innocence? Because he is, in a way...
At a certain point, he does take some of the blame though. He was using his subjects as shields, and he said he can rebuild his paradise as long as he survives. He didn't care at all about anybody. I get he was manipulated into believing he was a god, which isn't cool. But he always had the choice to decide *which kind* of god he would be.

His father and mother (Likely manipulated by Emmet) forced him to control the Sin Eaters for Eulmore's betterment, to make it so they don't fight them.
And we have to realize, that his parents are the Lion sin-eater and the final boss of Mt.Gulg, so that means after a certain point, exposure to him turned them, I wouldn't be surprised if it was even shortly after he was born, as he would be a baby, unable to fully control his Lightwarden powers.
@@devnkc Imagine if you grew up, and your morals were based upon you being a god, you being required to lead others to paradise and that if you die the paradise that humanity needs is gone. Then you would definitely save yourself because once you save yourself, you can bring everyone back. It's much like Emet, except one made the decision and one was raised that way.
