• The “Asian” Squat: Squatting toilets are still common in Indonesia, but they’re becoming less frequent in places like shopping malls or hotels. Dry sitting toilets are just easier to clean and more hygienic. Squatting while using the toilet is actually better for your health, but it’s not always practical for everyone; overweight people and pregnant women, for example, often find sitting toilets more accommodating. That’s why sitting toilets are more widely accepted these days. • Chopsticks: I wouldn’t call chopsticks a definitive symbol of “Asian-ness,” as they’re primarily used by East Asians. Like Stefanie said, when we’re not eating with our hands, our utensils of choice are spoons and forks. We do use chopsticks occasionally for Chinese-influenced foods like noodles, spring rolls, and dumplings, but it’s not a universal practice. I don’t think these two things can define who’s the “most Asian” among Asians. Asia is a massive continent with a vast diversity of cultures, customs, and ways of life.
With some practice, most people can learn to do a deep squat. For many individuals from Western cultures, the challenge often comes from not having squatted regularly, as they tend to be more accustomed to sitting or standing when resting or waiting. As long as there are no physical limitations, such as stiff ankles or high arches, most people can manage this position. The main difference is that in some cultures, squatting has been a common practice since childhood, even in public spaces, so people’s bodies adapt to it over time. In contrast, squatting is less common in other cultures, where it may not be seen as an everyday activity. Ultimately, it comes down to personal ability and what is considered normal in different societies. In cultures where squatting is less common, it may not be practiced as much, which influences how easily people can do it. But with enough practice, most people are certainly capable of achieving it.
@ Yes. Referring to it as the “Asian squat” is problematic. As someone in the comments pointed out, Slavic people can also squat like this. In fact, anyone with good ankle mobility and who regularly practices deep squatting exercises can achieve this position. Not just in Asia (which is really a home to a diverse range of cultures), this type of squatting is also particularly common in Eastern Europe, where it remains a more ingrained habit than in Western Europe.
@@kilanspeaks Seldom seen that in eastern Europe, I must say. But I've seen it with the Sami people in northern Europe (here in Scandinavia) as well as in west Africa (my job in the 80s). Not as common as it is in Asia though, where people seems better adapted for it (long torso and short legs).
