If the premise of your video is how to professionally paint a motorcycle with a can, perhaps it would have been instructive to actually show the painting with a can.
Yes, the problem is that over spray kills my camera lenses. I can afford to buy a new o e every time I want to film painting a part. If you are willing to lend me your camera for that purpose I'd be more than happy to film the whole process.
Great looking job Mackie. A couple additional tips for those wanting to do this 1.) Be careful to ensure the primer, guide coat, and top coat are compatible. You can't for instance use a lacquer top coat over an alkyd resin (enamel) guide coat. The lacquer may bubble the guide coat in that case. 2.) There are 2-pack rattle cans available. They have two compartments. Press a button on the can and the catalyst mixes with the paint. The can then has a pot life.
Very nice job.. I’ve got pretty good with spray paint over the years. Plan to try the two part 2k clear in the can. Looks like a great product, just cost $20 a can.
Hey buddy love your videos ,I'm 48 years old and just now learning to paint airbrush and pinstripe and you have helped me tremendously just wanted to say thanks, you keep up the phenomenal work. How does one know what to charge, by the job by the hour or just whatever you think it's worth depending on who it is for of course, I know that's kind of personal you don't have to tell me if you don't feel comfortable ,thanks keep it up
Great video, you gave me the confidence to give it a shot with my Yamaha RS Warrior. Only thing is, it has a dent right on the front right corner. I'm not sure how I can match the roundness with filler 🤔
Its not a good idea to just fill dents with filler. Your best bet is to borrow or rent a stud gun and weld some studs in the dent and use a slide hammer to pull as much of the dent as possible. Then you apply a nice thin coat of filler. That is how the professionals do it.
Yes! You can and an excellent job it is. Dono how this vid popped up at me considering I just painted a tank with rattle cans. I couldn't understand why I was getting streaks only to discover I was laying it on too close, I will say it myself you would think you did it, though I think because I used Matt Black it was forgiving. BUT it's not finished, and had intended finishing it today but can't find the decals I bought. I hope I am doing the right thing, Matt Black, Decals then Matt clear coat (and that's when I mess it up). Thanks.
Im in the middle of repainting mine. Not going back to the bare metal though, have used paint thinner to remove the top layer of colour, and going to wet and dry the colour underneath. Then bang a new colour on, hope it'll work haha!
It should work Ricky, just give it good airing before applying the top colour, as sometyimes the thinner canget some real nasty reaction as it hides in the "pores" of the existing paint.
well the top layer came off easy (previous owner didnt lacquer top coat, so it run when petrol touched it) i now have the underneath colou showing awaiting the wet and dry, 600 grit. The colour right now is a very dull green, any colours (apart from black) which will take over green easily? And, apparently I should be able to bang a colour on top of the green without the need for primer.
In theory that should work just fine mate. Any colour really should take over it ifthe prep is there. Light coats first, the maybe two or three heavier ones. Give me a shout if you have any questions brother?
budget doesn't always mean rattle cans, I have found that rattle cans are actually more expensive than buying paint by the quart and spraying with a gun. For that same amount of money you can buy paint by the quarts and spray more than one project with it, Sand paper and masking tape are your actual biggest expenses!
I often use duplicolor touch up paints as secondary colour. It's ... convenient, and quiet in not requiring the compressor. Once under clear coat it's all the same. More vids on striping please mate.@@MackieBass
Well done! That's a pretty paint job right there. I'm going to repaint my gas tank by the next season, but i have almost no idea which type of primer, paint and clear coat to use. Can you please give an expert advice on that?
Great job, with good prep you can get a great job with rattle bombs. I now mostly use the 2k clear in a can. Found a great supplier near me and price isn’t much more than the usual 1k stuff. Only tip is batch jobs as once the can has had the activator added its good for about 2 days if kept cool. Rock on dude🎸
I only tried one 2k in a can...but I wasn't very impressed with the result. The curing process took forever and on a hot day the thing gets soft. Which brand were you using?
I'm glad you made this video, very interesting. I have a two tone red and white paint scheme to attempt on my tank, it just has a light coat of grey primer on bare metal at the moment. What primer would you use for that, would grey primer be okay? The paint manufacturer recommends red primer for the red and white primer for the white, obviously I would rather just use one colour primer.
Hey Brian, i'd stick with grey primer - it's a good neutral base and goes well with any colour really. It also covers anything nicely, way better than the white stuff. Good luck with it!
when you spray in the garage right there with all the other gear, bikes, tools etc, what steps do you take to minimise problems from over spray? I caught a glimpse of some covers on bikes in the background there a bit, but is there anything else you do? Oh, and what about ventilation?
Yeah I cover everything up. Overspray is a killer! I've got an extractor fan kicking in the backgroung for the small jobs. For teh bigger ones I got a use of a spray booth - not mine, but I can use it :)
Thanks Mackie. More or less what I want to do with my Bandit tank. There might be two problems though. The bike is an import so it's not a UK colour but Hammerite smooth dark green is a match. Can I use the same method? Do you think it will take a clearcoat as I want to put a small line painting on it
Yes brother a job very very well done I spray all day cars not bikes and I can't fault the way you done that if ever you moved to London I'd give you a job any day
My paint keeps doing the wrinkle thing every time I put clear on it. Maby you can help please. I'm using all same brand paint. I use water and soap to sand and then all looks good. I put the clear on when it dry and then it all starts to wrinkle and shrink. I put hard work in my job and it gets ruined by clear. Again all paint and clear is the same brand.
You don't let it cure completely, so the solvent in the clear attacking the paint and reaction happens. Either leave it for couple of weeks, or use 2k clear
MackieBass ok thanks for the advice. Basically from what I’ve seen, a gloss finish all depends on proper wet sanding especially between clear coat. Then rubbing compound then swirl remover. That’s my plan anyway
What are you spraying on the bike before you sand it? Water? I plan on painting my entire bike can I buy any electric sander? Any suggestions on the sander?
Mackie, my tank is going to be re-sprayed soon and I have sanded the top 'shine' colour off and the colour beneath is now a dull matte colour. In theory could i just spray right onto that, rather than go back to bare metal?

That my friend is a very good and technically correct point. I'm glad I have comment like yours, so all the things I miss can be corrected. Brilliant!
I used to work in bodyshops, it just goes to show what can be achieved it's all in the prep as far as i'm concerned. Nice 1
That is exactly it. The same steps I'd take if I used 2K paint and a gun, no difference really!
Great job. The spray pattern with professional cans is so much better than from cheap cans. Did you do that tank with one can of base coat?
