Great Job!! I didn't read the comments because ppl and their unnecessary criticism is just beyond annoying and disturbing. You helped me with some pointers for sure! Thank you for sharing your passion project with us! 💜
I'm doing my first tank right now. Haven't put the top coat on it yet, still doing some prep, trying to get it right. It had a little damage I had to fix with Bondo. I've noticed that once it's primed you can use a flashlight to help find any tiny dings or high/low spots. You put the flashlight close to the tank at different angles and you'll see a slight shadow if something isn't perfectly smooth.
You inspired me to fix my tank. It fell over in a trailer and got a dent on the tank. Always said I'd fix eventually, but after watching your vids about stripping and painting this tank, I realized this really is something I can do myself. Plus after having the skill, I can keep painting and trying new colors and what not. Great vids 👍
I really liked your video! It was very honest and very real! I messed up my gas tank on my bike trying to “fix” it. So I’ve been watching a lot of videos on painting tanks and yours is my favorite.
Nice work, I’m 14 and me and my dad fix up and sell used / broken dirt bikes and motorcycles. I am in the process of painting a Harley Sportster for a guy, and this was very helpful. 👍 ( he gave me multiple bottles of spray max 2k primer and 2k clear coat, along with a good hot rod red, so I’m pretty excited.)
Be sure to get your primer as smooth as possible, Don't rush the job, The smoother your primer the smoother your end results. Do some research on guide coating and sanding, This will ensure you get it preped well for the smoothest finish. If there is one thing I have noticed about everyone that use's spray cans it is that they don't prep well enough and rush the job.
I love the work you do. I have the same passion for vintage bikes, I've got a garage full. Excellent job on the paint, I hope my current project turns out half as good.👍
You did a good job but i think u can apply heavier coats as well. We use a spray gun to paint and no matter how much you reduce the nozzle setting the coats come more heavier than yours.
Still nice, I tend to agree regarding the darker primer and the wet sanding, maybe another colour can would have done it, but that is how we learn. Well done
You should’ve tried the 2k clear. It’s automotive grade and resistant to any solvent. Amazing stuff. Spray max and I personally use kustom canz. You can always buff it out and do that over it.
How long did you want to do the clear, and did you sand it before? I'm doing a step by step on your video and needing to find out. If so what grit and how long for a dry time? Thank you for your help and time.
I waited I think an hour on the primer. Light sanding. Then color. Let the color sit for a couple weeks before I hit the clear. I think. It was a long time ago. You want that color to breathe out fully before putting clear on.

Clear lacquer is not going to hold up to gasoline. Should use Spraymax 2K clear. It has a catalyst and will withstand gasoline. Also I bet your floor was a mess after you were done. You mention not to touch tank but you handled the rear mounting tab. By the way Spraymax has epoxy primer 2k also. Sprays with a wide extra fine pattern.
Why didn't you spray on the other side of the garage, all that room, overspray on tools, car, bike.. cover things. Believe me i know, that tank had you chasing it. Thanks 4 sharing
It’s where I have a good anchor in the ceiling. Only reason. I wish I would have used two lines to reduce movement. Once i started it was too late. Lol. It all worked out at the end of the day. Really pleased with how the tank turned out. Thanks for watching!

You can definitely sand between coats. But I just went for it. Check the comments for tips from pros. My tank still looks great with a methodical rattle can method. Make it so.
next time sand primer smooth then hit it with a very light coat of black then sand till all black guide coat has gone then you will know its all smooth, you can see where its filled and the dent left highlights it, on 2nd coat very lightly run 3000 paper oer it then hit itwith a wet final coat for deep finish then high gloss it with 2k clear but nice job
That clear coat you used is not chemical resistant, so what ever you do ,don't get no gas on it or it will lift your clear. You have to use a 2 part clear

It definitely inspired me. I have an 82’ gpz550 I’ve been working on all year and the tank is what I’m working on now. I have to clean the inside and get it prepped before I paint of course but coincidentally it’s red so I’m going for the same color you went for here. It looks good man! How long did you wait before putting on each coat of paint btw?

All that work only to make silly mistakes. First the repair work wasn't complete. I seen one flat spot in the bondo area. @@KeepOnWrenching Thanks! Another quick question. The paint color I like came in a can that's primer and paint together. I wold still obviously prime it correctly, but will there be any harm in using a paint/primer combo.

@@KeepOnWrenching yeah i did that once and got overspray on a roommates Harley and he wasn't too happy, that was 30 years ago or better. Thats why i noticed
I believe it is. It was not a 2 part spray tho. I’m pretty careful with gas on the tank for sure. Since filming this I’ve use 2K clear and I highly recommend it.
Well this guy sure has the spirit,.....but rattle can paint jobs to me never look good. Yeah,....I was forced to do mine that way,....I did it in the 2 hours between jobs,.... so I wouldn't have time to clean my spray gun. My advise is read the can first to make sure it's enamel,.....not Lacquer,....or to do the job right you would have to strip it down to bare metal,.... again. With enamel you just scuff it and paint it. You cant spray enamel over Laquer. That's old info but I prefer enamel to the new crap. Base cote clear coat? Do the same thing twice? Epoxy paint? Not in my spray gun? WATER PAINT? My cheap scate company made me use that crap. If theirs putty involved you need to seal it before you paint it. For a smooth finish you wet sand the primer. But you put the primer on heavy,.. not fast and dry. See you wet sand,.....the primer to make a smooth surface. You spray it slower so that it go's on like paint,......not dry like over spray. You should not have to sand your paint between coats. A) seal your bondo. B) Heavy primer C) wet sand,....wipe off good. D) Paint,....you should see gloss,... not flat over spray from going too fast. E) After that keep the paint glossy,....after 3-4 coats your done. To me his paint job looks like he went too fast with the primer and its essentially over spray? Then he sprayed his paint over,......the over spray and instead of gloss its a almost flat haizy look. You want about a pint,...in a touch up spray gun,... and it will look as good as it can look. You will see all your bad bondo work,...unless you paint it white.
@@KeepOnWrenching When I was 17 years old I rode the friggin guts out of a 1971 honda CB350, the one painted gold. At the same time I had a 1961 Triumph bonneville, wrecked that one on the side of a mountain in West Va, came up with a few breaks in that one. Still ridin.
I really didn’t have any other options so I just went for it. The paint scratch ended up coming out remarkably close for a 50 year old color. It was a “it is what it is” kind of a situation.
Wrong! You should wet sand primer between coats. Wet sand the color, then clear. You would have had a much better result. It's also obvious that you can see the bondo areas and a few dents. Orange peel city.
I couldn’t be more pleased with how this tank ended up. It was a complete mess before. Noted on wet sanding. Thanks for the tip. Always learning! It’s a hobby not a lifestyle.
What grit of paper for wet sand primer and what grit for wet sande base coat? Then when you spray 2k clear do I have enough to San buff and wax it or am I good to go!?
@@KeepOnWrenching4yrs later I'm doing my vn1500, I've just laid the base coat on the front fender. As it probably takes more of a beating from road grim etc I thought I'd make my mistakes on it and learn before doing the tank. So far I'm very pleased! Thanks for the video 👌🏼
Jose Rojas I’m just focusing on my own projects right now. I’d encourage you to look locally for any work you need done. I’m still learning and can live with my mistakes. :)
That can does have a wide spray pattern, your technique was poor. if your using up and down movement hold the can horizontally, if side to side then hold the can vertical. you will waste less paint and have an even finish.
why are you chasing your tank??.. walk around it and spray a bit slower.. you and the tank are moving way to much.. if you have too, hang the tank from two lines to stop it from spinning.. man.. I was getting dizzy watching your video..
@@KeepOnWrenching actually.. from what I saw it was mediocre.. at best... your technique to prime is seriously flawed.. you are wasting way to much paint just throwing it at the tank.. slow it sown a bit.. relax.. remember.. its only paint.. if it doesnt turn out right.. it can be redone.. your overlay should be about 65 to 75%... depending on the spray pattern of the nozzle.. and you should go around your seams and edges first to allow to get a good coverage there when you do you final spray...good luck..
I’m an American. We don’t care what the rest of the world calls it. It’s a gas tank. Always will be. But you can call it whatever you want. It’s not like we would send in our military or anything. America!
So the Wifey asked me if you were getting spray on the gold bike? Any overspray on the other bike? I'm like Kentucky Yankee, I think it's time you graduate to a spray gun and compressor. Find a local automotive paint store and mix and match your own paint and colors. You will never go back. I will say you are probably getting the best job out of a spray can that is humanly possible.
I had the gold one covered “most” of the time. I did give her a good wipe down though once I realized the error of my ways. Spray gun has been acquired for the next bike. But I am pretty thrilled with what can be done with the spray can when you TAKE YOUR TIME. Plus, not everyone has an air compressor, etc or funds to acquire them. It can be done via alternate means.

@@KeepOnWrenching yeah i did that once and got overspray on a roommates Harley and he wasn't too happy, that was 30 years ago or better. Thats why i noticed
wonder why you'd repaint the tunnel.
Not sure what you mean?
A straightened coat hanger would have been more stable than a rope
Definitely! Lots of chasing around! Lol
Lol hes chasing his part around and around
It was a workout! Got it done though.
Is that clear fuel resistant like Spraymax?
B) Heavy primer
C) wet sand,....wipe off good.
It actually turned out really well. I’m sure a paint gun would do nicely/better tho. Thanks for all the info.
Bitchen narley work. I need to see the tank after you buffed it.
Check out the IG account keep_on_wrenching it turned out pretty good!
I like ur voice
That’s nice. I talk a lot so that’s good. Lol
You should paint in one direction!!!!!!!!!
I’ll try that! Thanks.
lol.. always paint a test piece when color matching....
I really didn’t have any other options so I just went for it. The paint scratch ended up coming out remarkably close for a 50 year old color. It was a “it is what it is” kind of a situation.
If that’s not enamel engine paint gas will dissolve the paint
It was enamel paint. Cleared with 2K.
Wow, a lot of orange peel
I honestly didn’t see it in my final result at all.
Hello Brian! Do you do work for other people as well or just yourself?
Jose Rojas I’m just focusing on my own projects right now. I’d encourage you to look locally for any work you need done. I’m still learning and can live with my mistakes. :)
Das ist nichts besonderes
es kam gut tho!
You sound like Jack Black
People keep saying that! Lol
That swinging tank is making me dizzy.
Totally. I put them on boxes now. Lol
That can does have a wide spray pattern, your technique was poor. if your using up and down movement hold the can horizontally, if side to side then hold the can vertical. you will waste less paint and have an even finish.
Thanks for the tips!
WHA???...No wet emory sands between coats???.... bahhhhh... another hack job with a pressurized can
why are you chasing your tank??.. walk around it and spray a bit slower.. you and the tank are moving way to much.. if you have too, hang the tank from two lines to stop it from spinning.. man.. I was getting dizzy watching your video..
I got dizzy too. I needed two lines for sure. A great workout tho and the end result was pretty good!
Sir, This is petrol tank, not a Gas tank, correct it yourself
Lol. Depends on where you are.
Majority in this world, And we call it as petrol tank , And every corner of the world and advance country say it. Stop fooling your self,
I’m an American. We don’t care what the rest of the world calls it. It’s a gas tank. Always will be. But you can call it whatever you want. It’s not like we would send in our military or anything. America!
@@KeepOnWrenching nobody needs all your use less, etc
Clement Flutto shut the fuck up stupid ass name. sound like a fungus.
cough cough
Here’s a cough drop!
I have gone to spray gun and airbrush gun and I am done with rattle cans. The guns are so much better in finishes and ease of usage.
Slow video
No. It was recorded at regular speed. Thanks for watching. I hope it was helpful.
is this a joke ?
Nope! Just a vid for us rattle can guys! It’s pretty fascinating what can be done with those bad boys. The tank came out great!
Don't make how to videos if you don't know how to.
It’s a journey!
