      I think he is an untrustworthy reviewer because his untempered bias often results in him overlooking or excusing the many faults of the Nintendo corporation. In short, he's pretty much just a freelance PR man who won't really give it to you straight but boy will he make sure to let you know you should buy everything Nintendo sends him. I find his style especially dangerous for the younger crowd, because of their lack of critical thinking skills, he basically propagandizes them.

      Stephen O'Brien You must not watch the entirety of his videos. He always talks about his gripes. It just so happens he loves Nintendo. Which is why Nintendo fans flock here. Just like Arlo, we love Nintendo too. We look forward to his reviews because he is a trusted when it comes to Nintendo games and their quality.

      @@MichaelMashpotato Yeah he loves Nintendo so much he didn't bother playing the previous iterations of their games the last few generations (or at least that's what he seems to say in a lot of his videos). He is "trusted" by people who listen to him for the sake of confirmation bias. There's nothing wrong with liking any companies games but when you pander to the corporate fanaticism, then I tend to take your opinion less seriously. There's loads of other channels out there that can critically review their games fairly but Arlo doesn't do that. He will dumb-down almost any real issue to make the fans feel okay about accepting anything nintendo wants to sell them. If it makes you feel good, or entertained to watch him, that's cool. He does have some very good production quality but I think you're misplacing your trust if you're coming to him for objectivity. It's like reading Nintendo Power for reviews, it's dishonestly one-sided.

      If I had to make a questline, after visiting rito village, apparently all the warriors, led by teba, were missing, so they couldn't fight the divine beast. The elder sends you off to the snow mountain, where you fight monsters and lizalfos to get to the peak, where teba is. You inform him of your heroism and then go to flight range. There he puts you to a difficult arrow course. He flies to the top of rito village, you have to make it back. You can talk to ppl, buy stuff, etc and finally you get to the top where there is a small cutscene with teba and the elder. Then you fly to the beast

    Ruta: Make your way up this long mountain trail, meet your would-have-been father-in-law, fight or sneak around a God damn Lynel to get his arrows, and fight the giant robot.
    Rudania: Find a way up Death Mountain Trail without burning to death, which will most likely involve finding lizards on the lower parts of the trail and cooking them, make your way up the mountain which is pretty difficult even if you stray off the trail and climb up, meet the boss, go through this really fun cannon section where you blow the crap out of Lizalfos, save Goron, escort him up the mountain to fight the robot.
    Naboris: Trek through the desert on foot in the blazing heat or frigid cold, fail to get into town, find cross-dressing man, get girl clothes, go into town, meet chief, sneak through Yiga fortress, fight Yiga leader, get helmet, go back to town, fight robot.

    This might sound funny but I'm of the opinion that the Yiga Clan's hideout is a parody of old Zelda games.
    The whole segment sticks out like a sore thumb, awkward stealth sections and this weird sense of humor that was present in old Zelda games that isn't TOO present in the rest of the game. I mean look at the boss, it has super telegraphed attacks and patterns, with a "puzzle" element to each phase that's really strict but also stupidly easy.
    Anyone else get this vibe?

    • @Nynkx
      @Nynkx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      from the video i was getting that too. just the look of the level like spacing and size of enemies felt like it. Also the fact that they decided to add something that felt like one of those typical stealth sections, definitely felt like a conscious decision and if you ask why then that is pretty much a very logical answer.

      i mean even how the boss was ridiculously easy feels kind of deliberate now that i think about it.
      also the way the entire boss fight is framed, and how cartoonish everything about the whole ordeal is, including the sword guys' goofy demeanour. feels like a very conscious decision

    • @1001-v1s
      @1001-v1s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Have you people ever played a Legend of Zelda game? There aren't very many stealth sections.
      Throughout the history of the series you could probably count them on one hand.
      There's one problem with your theory.
      The effete villain is a pretty common Japanese trope.
      The boss was just a fun way of ending a tedious and difficult quest that happened to be different from the others.
      You're overthinking it. I'm pretty sure these people love Zelda more than most.

      THANK YOU! Everyone keeps saying that they found the Zora one first and I'm sitting here thinking "damn why did I found the Gerudo one first and it felt so natural?!". That also explains why I had such an easier time on the rest of them, first because the Gerudo one is actually the hardest, second because Urbosa's Fury makes all the other fights ridiculously easy. My last Divine Beast was the Rito one, and that helped me not breaking the overworld game with Revali's Gale. Revali's Gale can be a problem, like Arlo mentioned on other video, but having it is a goddamn BLESSING on subsequent playthroughs.

    I really wish Nintendo would give us the dungeon structure of Zelda 1 and 2, where you could go to dungeons out of order, but if you go to dungeon 7 when you first start out you're gonna get pretty messed up. Like, keep the dungeon order and have later dungeons be harder, but don't force us to do that order

    -29 empty blessing shrines= 91
    -20 test of strength shrines which are just basically one shrine= 72
    -6 just awful mition control shrines= 66 shrines
    out of those 66, there are a good few that are overly simple, but its up to each individual player how many of those 66 feel “worth it”. I think thats why the dungeon content feels shallow for so many, because right off the bat, almost half of the shrines are a let down, and the remaining half is hit or miss on top of being very visually similar.

    The shield parry is the absolute best way to take care of the guardians, at least for me. Took a while to learn how to do it every time. But it was incredibly rewarding once I got the hand of it. The feeling of bouncing that Lazer beam back into their stupid lovely robot faces is an absolute joy!

      The shield parry is the best way to take care of Stalkers, but it can feel way to easy, with one parry taking out more than a third of their hp. The parries should at least do less damage with weaker shields, so that it takes a bit more skill when you're replaying the early game.

    Arlo, thank you. Someone finally talked about the dungeons and gave them *legitimate* critiques instead of just saying “boo hiss! They’re all the same!” Like some other TH-camrs. On the topic of the yiga clan hideout, I love that section because contradictory to what you say, you dont instantly fail if your spotted. During my first time through I was fed with going stealthily so I decided to just attack the enemies. While it's very challenging to win it is possible to kill all of the yiga members in the hideout, all you have to do is not get hit by the big guys once. The fact that the game encourages you to choose one path but leaves the other path open for a skilled enough player really impressed me and gave me a sense of accomplishment that's nearly unrivaled by any other section of the game.

    I think if there's anything they could do to improve the shrines, it would be to connect them all. There would still be a ton of them scattered around the world, but they could include optional challenges leading to "alternate exits". These alternate exits would connect each shrine to others nearby, so if one shrine feels like it's over too quickly, players could continue into another shrine. This avoids breaking up the "shrine" experience, and lets players pretend the shrines are one giant traditional dungeon if they want. This would help the dungeon/shrine experience feel more substantial.

    Arlo, I agree with you on the Calamity Ganon Boss bit. Just as you said, he's like the Strongest Guardian, and I found him to be just like that, *right down to perfect-parrying the lazers.* Practicing on the Guardian Stalkers, Decayed Guardians, and Guardian Turrets that are abundant actually proved to be quite handy (even if purely by accident in my case on the first try, and boy howdy is it an excellent weapon if you have a metal shield and good timing reflexes), and I've found that the audio cues that they give are excellent timings for when to parry, depending on your distance from them.
    And yes, the Beast Ganon LAZOR! can hit you. You just have to be actively trying to get hit. He's more focused on trying to take Hyrule with him than he is trying to take you down at that point.

    Ok... coming from my perspective of being a long time gamer but never having played through a Zelda game before.
    I obviously knew there were dungeons but never placed the same emphasis on them as some.
    For me the run up to the divine beasts wasn’t that. It was just part of a single game and a story of a single game. I didn’t experience your thing of having a game of separate dungeons. More just a single story and game that happened to have puzzles and bases in it.
    If that makes sense. :-)

    Eh, I wouldn't compare shrines to dungeons. They have one or two aspects per shrine, but that's like comparing eggs and sugar to an entire cake. That doesn't make the shrines bad, but my issue with them comes from how busted the puzzles are. Arlo mentions multiple solutions, but I never found these satisfying...mainly because these alternate solutions are almost always very simple. Here's two examples that show up a lot:
    1. Guide the flame to ignite the flammable object. This is circumvented with a fire arrow.
    2. Guide the electric current to a switch. This is circumvented by just hitting the switch with an electric weapon.
    Maybe if I was still really little, I might feel clever for realizing this, but I'm in my 20s and it's obvious that I'm not being clever. I'm just not being stupid. These solutions are so stupidly simple and are so often available that it feels like the developers were trying to trick me into thinking I'm really smart by offering a honey pot in the form of a simple solution.
    Same thing with Divine Beasts to be honest. They have puzzles, but they aren't dungeons. Not just because they're about the same size as OoT's mini dungeons, but because they don't really follow the dungeon formula. If puzzles were the defining part of dungeons, then OoT would be the first game to have them. But, while a welcome addition, they're not.
    Also...5 minutes for a shrine? Maybe for a couple, like Trial of Power or Blue Flame, but on average I'd say 1-2 minutes is much more realistic.
    As for Hyrule Castle, I don't see what separates it from any part of the overworld beyond the fact that it has the 3D map. You can still climb, nothing is disabled, the focus is exploration, and there's no puzzles. Hyrule Castle is just the overworld done right. It's much more dangerous, it's much less empty, it has lore. This is what most of the overworld should be like. I hope they use this as a base for the next game.
    And regarding Lynels...there's two ways to stun them. Stasis+ and, as Arlo mentioned, headshots. Except y'know, with headshots, you can just spam this over and over. And since there's no scarcity in arrows and Lynel parts can sell for thousands of rupees, there's no reason not to spam headshots over and over. It saves on time and durability.

    About the gyro puzzles: My favorite moment so far in a shrine was when I was trying to guide a ball through a maze then fling it to a switch with motion controls (which was shown in the video). After failing a few times I turned the controller upside down to reveal the smooth surface underneath the maze... And then immediatley flung the ball onto the switch without needing the maze. It was such a cool moment, logic overcame the silly gamey obvious objective, but it didn't feel like I cheesed the game, it was just how the game worked.

      The Windblight is the least enjoyable boss battle I have ever had in a video game. Ending up brute forcing him twice with hundreds of arrows as I was never able to find any clear mechanic to weaken & wail on him. After the first try I reloaded to try to find the "correct" way to fight him and it ended the same way. I was never able to get close enough to land a single sword hit in either attempt. I'm not actually a big fan of the 'testing the hero' context that they have to justify puzzles being in the world. I just feel like the Zelda series has relied on that trope for a while now, and it ends up feeling a little predictable. Don't get me wrong, I liked the puzzles that come with them, but it kind of feels like jumping through hoops instead of actually growing as a hero. I much prefer the big dungeons where you are rewarded with a substantial upgrade that helps you feel like you are actually becoming a hero. Spirit orbs end up like dog treats for being an obedient hero. A deceased hero giving you a power after overcoming a tricky boss feels much better as opposed to tests being laid out for you and explicitly stated as so.

    • @TheAlibabatree

    • @KitCloud1
      @KitCloud1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's more the shieka stockpiled resources and only the hero will get them. Spirit orbs are basically a better version of heart pieces so I'd hardly call them "dog scraps" and I'd certainly take them over any reward Skyward Bored had to offer. That said I'm totally in agreement Link proving his worth is a stupid trope and justification for rewarding the hero.

      The problem with that mindset, especially in the open world game like this, is that if, say, a player missed X shrine that contained amazing object Y...they might never find it, unless you essentially force the player to go there.
      and like TheAlibabatree stated, the divine beasts fill that role. They are a solid challenge (unless you spend 100 hours before attempting one like arlo apparently), with very powerful rewards. A permenant, recharging (essentially) fairy that completely fills your hearts and overfills them? Pretty powerful. Reflecting any attack up to 3 times? Pretty good. Being able to just go *up* 40 feet? Tiny bit handy, gotta say.
      And as kitcloud1 said, they are essentially heart pieces. A small challenge for a heart piece is pretty common for zelda games. But I like these better, because 1, it's clear and obvious WHERE one is, the biggest problem I had with previous game's heart pieces, and 2, you get to choose HOW you increase in strength. Take more hits, or move better? And to both you and kitcloud, if you don't like the trope...how would you do it? Not being sarcastic or anything. It's easy to say "it's dumb," but it's a lot harder to suggest a realistic possible alternative that might actually be better. Criticism without construction is just being an ass.

    • @spoilthatsong2544
      @spoilthatsong2544 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevenn1940 Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the shrines and certainly don't think the idea of trials for a hero is dumb or lazy. Spirit orbs serve a good purpose, but I'm just not a fan of the context of the shrines being trials for a hero to prove themselves. For me, it just feels a bit too laid out and pre-planned within the story. Your opinion is just as valid as mine, but it just reminds me of Skyward Swords trial after trial to prove yourself. I like the idea of stumbling on something that was never intended for you. Probably being a bit picky, but that's just how I feel.

    The Dark Beast Ganon fight _could_ have been big, epic, and cinematic while still being challenging. I mean, look at Void Termina from Kirby: Star Allies. That's pretty much Dark Beast Ganon but hard. You're fighting a giant beast in a massive, circular arena, you're running around said arena by riding something, and you need to hit his weak points, just like Ganon, but Void Termina's weak points take multiple hits and he has a wide variety of attacks that actually pose a threat to you. He also changes up his pattern the further you get in the fight. After taking down a few weak points, he'll get giant swords with either fire, ice, or lightning attributes and he'll use those. Once you've been inside him once, he starts flying around, shooting arrows at you, trying to hit you with an axe that makes shockwaves, swooping down at you, dropping giant spears all over the arena, and spamming giant laser beams at you that are actually fast enough to hit you. They could have had Ganon do those things.

    For me, the Divine Beasts were among the most boring parts of the game. The puzzles were extremely tedious, the rewards were mostly underpowered weapons and I am very happy that there are only four of them. Hyrule Castle on the other hand was one of my favourite places in the game as it is both difficult, fun and there are great rewards. Most of the shrines were really fun but the Apparatus ones can go to hell, and I also wasn't the biggest fan of those combat ones.

    • @likeagrape57
      @likeagrape57 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I loved how so many shrines were cheeseable with the shield-surf jump.😂 The champions weapons really aren't underpowered. Urbosa's sword has one of the highest durabilities of any one handed sword. Revalie's bow is one of the best bows in the game. Daruk's hammer thing is probably the best talus killing weapon. The lightscale trident is probably the worst champion's weapons.

    • @tristanneal9552
      @tristanneal9552 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah Daruk’s sledgehammer is arguably one of the best weapons in the game. And the light scale trident is the weakest because the player is pushed towards Zora’s Domain before the other divine beasts, so it’s meant to be early game. But still, they’re very weak compared to other weapons you will quickly find, if you haven’t already by the time you get there. Would have been better if they were stronger, or if they were the same strength but had infinite durability. Either way, the real reward was always the champion abilities.

    • @likeagrape57
      @likeagrape57 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tristanneal9552 I don't know. I prefer the Great Eagle bow to any other bow in the game. Also, we shouldn't forget about Daybreaker. Everyone seems to forget that Daybreaker is like the second best shield in the game.

      If I'm correct, the only bow better than revalis bow is a bow that you can only get by beating high level lynels. So it's not that easily replaced imo. I love revalis bow.

      @@shadow51090 Umm, yeah? I didn't point that out as criticism, I point that out as fact. I thought it was kinda given that Majora's Mask is one of most content having Zelda games considering how many interesting sidequests it has.
      I also pointed it out as that sentence being silly because Windwaker did have lot of dungeons and lot of sidequests even if it has less than most other major 3d zelda games.(I think its probably second least amount of dungeons in 3d games?) So like I think Arlo was being really silly there :D

    for me, one of the best experiences i had was with the shrine at 8:46 (or at least i think it was that one...). its a shrine where you have to get a blue flame from one pedestal at the beginning aaaaalllllllllllllll the way to the end, with checkpoints along the way. just one problem: i didnt have any fricking arrows. but i wasnt willing to give up. i had a couple torches on hand, so i decided that i would just throw a torch across a lake of lava to the other pedestal. its such a simple, easy thing to do with arrows: light it and shoot the thing. but with torches, oH mY gOD. it took me SO much time just to be able to finally throw the torch before it went out AND still hit the pedestal, and when i finally did it, i was so happy. but then...there was a section where i had to shoot an arrow through two pedestals at once to light them both, while they move in opposite directions, and, to make it even better, each time they switched directions, a water fountain would put out the pedestals. so, (and im not 100% sure), i believe i had to stasis the first platform, throw the torch onto the pedestal, jump and then double jump (with shield surfing) onto that first platform, grab the torch, wait for the second platform to come back around, and then throw the torch again. if i wasnt such a fRiCkInG bLoCkHeAd, i couldve gone and gotten arrows, but i didnt feel like it, and i still finished the puzzle. the fact that you can do the puzzle so OBJECTIVELY wrong, but still finish it, is amazing. any other game would have MADE you go get those arrows if you wanted to finish the trial, but not this game. thats what really made me realize that this is my favorite game of all time; the fact that i can really do things however i want, and even if its a lot harder whatever stupid way i want to do it, the game is ok with that.

    Arlo, I doubt you care about defending your gaming opinions, but I have agreed with you about all the games you have reviewed until now. Yet because we are both passionate about the Zelda franchise, I have to say I'm surprised you enjoyed the shrines and "dungeons" so much. You do say you would sometimes wish for an old school style dungeon, which I agree with, but I disagree that the shrines were that enjoyable. Most of the time they were tedious for me, and sadly I even got bored for a while. I had to take a break from the game, which I never do playing Zelda. I agree the shrines are more logical within the Zelda context, which again I agree is awesome, but over 90 physics-based puzzles is just... not adventurous. The whole concept of BoTW was the ADVENTURE, the world exploration, the weapon/item discoveries, the combat system, and the exciting emotions it all invoked. You also said there were less battles within the shrines and dungeons, which is a HUGE part of Zelda. The feeling of being the hero, the ONLY one who can actually FIGHT all the baddies is taken from us inside those shrines and dungeons. Baddies respawning every so often within Hyrule after defeating them doesn't give me that sense of accomplishment, like I restored the temple to it's former glory, as it did in older Zeldas. I do agree with you about the Divine Beasts being different and a cool idea, but they ended up being just a grander version of the shrines with lame boss fights at the end. All in all, I love the direction Nintendo took with BoTW, but like with Skyward Sword, there is a lot of room for improvement on what they created. I hope Nintendo takes that into account for the sequel.

    I agree 100% with the idea that having tons of short dungeons makes it all feel less substantial. My favorite shrine in the whole game is Shora Hah: Blue Flame, and its primarily because this is probably the most substantial shrine. Its got a good handful of puzzles and enemies to defeat all strung together. Its not immediately over the way that most of the other shrines are. I found that essentially every shrine that was just one single puzzle left me feeling like I got no enjoyment from it. I really would have preferred in they had cut the number of shrines, but had the actual shrines be much longer.
    Also the Blessing Shrines and most of the shrine quests were always disappointing. Nothing less satisfying than accidentally stumbling upon a shrine through exploration and then not being given a puzzle of any sort. And the nature of the shrine quests feels like you're trying to figure out the riddles of what the heck you're supposed to be doing, which doesn't feel nearly as good as figuring out a puzzle inside of a shrine where you at least know you're in the right place.
