For the sake of clarifications, reusable TMs have been a thing since generation 5 in 2010, and yeah, they have been a very welcome change. Party-wide experience sharing has been an option since generation 6, but up to now it was an option you could decline if you wanted to level your team up the old fashioned way, Let's Go makes it mandatory. Pokémon dodging attacks, etc. based on affection was also an addition of gen 6, specifically tied to the Pokémon Amie virtual petting minigame.

Definitely a great review. I do wanna note that I feel the grid like layout of Kanto in Let's Go does seem completely deliberate (either through laziness or stylistic choice) when you play a Gen 7 games, since in Sun and Moon, the layout of routes and locations aren't grid based anymore and completely dynamic. The grass patches and roads aren't perpendicular and polygonal. So I think Game Freak has already left the trend, but just wanted to emulate the Game Boy layout.

Pretty much yeah. I mean I'm sure some people love exp share being automatic and team wide in Sword and Shield but it completely ruins the game for me and I hate that you can change your team at any point and honestly I'm not the biggest fan of taking away the random battles it's like they took all the challenge out of the game and made it for toddlers when they should know full well that a large portion of their audience (I'd say far more than half) are people who have been playing Pokemon for over 10 years and probably half of those like myself for over 20 years. I still remember how excited/happy I was when I got Pokemon Blue for Christmas the year it came out at 7 years old and have been playing Pokemon ever since so I've witnessed a lot of changes in the series over the years but these are honestly my most hated. And dynamaxing don't even get me started on dynamaxing it's just stupid.

The only thing I'd like to see stay in the series is the random battle mechanic. Having Pokemon on the actual overworld is great. Everything else? Eh. They removed wild battles and replaced it with a motion control focus game that barely works. (seriously, I've yet to see someone actually like it). And when playing in handheld, you're basically just...repeatedly pressing A and throwing an endless supply of balls till it works. They removed most of the satisfaction of training a team. I'm not a fan of EXP share since X and Y but atleast they gave you the option to turn it off, but not this time.
I wouldn't mind this game if it stayed as its own subseries alongside the core games. But all this talk of this being a core game has me nervous. The Pokemon Go catching mechanic was made as a way to make pokeballs and Pokemon disposable to encourage spending money. I don't think it translates well to an RPG, especially in the long run. It'll probably get boring if it sticks around due to the lack of depth in catching Pokemon. It's all a bit shallow really.

Disclaimer: I havn't actually played the game myself, but I have researched it and watched a few LP's
I wouldn't mind the removal of wild battles and the auto EXP sharing so much if they gave us the option to ignore these features. Like give us the option to choose if we want to have wild battles or not, and allow us the choice of whether to use the EXP share feature or not. Even X/Y and Sun/Moon allowed us to choose if we wanted exp sharing. (I'm currently playing through moon for the first time, turned the EXP share off as soon as I got it and my entire party of six is still way overleveld compared to the trainers at this stage of the game).
Hopefully Pokemon 2019 goes back to the more traditional formula and at least gives us a choice as to whether we want to use the features. Or be like fire emblem and offer a classic mode for series veterans and a casual mode for the people who just want to play the game on easy mode.

      1. You don't have to mess with EV's whatsoever. They make you stronger than NPC and wild pokemon who might be the same level as you to give you an edge. You also don't have to touch natures and IV's either. As long as you follow natural game progression nothing is undefeatable.
      2. Since you didn't make it especially clear, I'm going to assume that you're saying that breeding for natures and IV's are less tedious than grinding for EV's. That makes some sense if you're talking about preparing for competitive battling, but natures and IV's are not vitally important to playing through the story. You don't need to make a detour halfway through and breed perfect pokemon, just like you don't need to perfectly train EV's, and unlike breeding EV's happen naturally through normal gameplay. Certain stats are boosted when you defeat certain pokemon which gives you an advantage over other trainer-owned and wild pokemon. You DO NOT need to make these stats perfect to beat the game, only when playing competitive.

When I was a kid I didn't know about the Missingno glitch and trained my team normally. I got them up to high 80's and one of them into the 90's, it was tedious work. I link battled with my friend and when I saw all his pokemon were at level 100, I was amazed. I asked "How did you do that, you must be a great trainer." and he told me about the glitch and how he multiplied rare candies. So we battled, and I was surprised when I won. It felt like all the hours I had spent with my Pokemon had made them stronger than his "no effort, glitch exploited" team. Back then I didn't even know EV's existed and years later when I found out I was happy they were there. It taught me the value of hard work and not taking shortcuts.
To me, EV's are that bond between trainer and Pokemon that makes them stronger with time and care.

I know you stated quite openly that you hadn't played Gen's 6 or 7. But even despite that, I have some corrections to make.
1: TM's have been infinite use since Gen 5.
2: ORAS had the "sneak up on Pokemon" mechanic.
3: The EXP Share became a key item in XY, and performs exactly the same in Let's Go.
4: EV's and IV's aren't something you need to waste even a single bit of your time on if you're only playing casually. They're made mostly for competitive players.
5: Gen 7, ie. Sun/Moon, got rid of HM's entirely before. Replacing them with the "Ride Pager"
and finally: Pretty much every Pokemon game since XY have had little to no Post-game. Outside of breeding or challenging the "Battle Frontier", or whatever other Post-game battle mode that's in the game, there really hasn't been much to do in a Pokemon game after the Champion is beaten outside of just catching more Pokemon and collecting items.

EVs to me made sense as they were training. You want a stronger Pokemon, train your Pokemon to be strong. You want it to be faster, make it catch the chicken. It worked for Rocky, it worked here. That said I was cool with them streamlining it in X/Y and making the punching bags you can have them beat up instead of grinding on a specific type.

I can kind of see how adults and younger kids would appreciate this game more than seasoned pokemon fans. I’m more of the latter, but I can see that Nintendo really wanted a more casual experience in their games for people here. For example, battling a pokemon whilst trying to catch it is more fun for me than endlessly chucking balls at it. It adds a layer of “what’s your next move?” type of thinking. Do you let your main pokemon tank hits? Do you want to use a status effect? If you let them faint, you lose affection, so it affects you in the long run...
I do think I’m okay with the on the run party system, but part of the fun was trying to figure out what you want to use and when and how before tackling a challenge. I agree that EV training needs reworking, but as it stands, it’s a bit too simple. Maybe using specific moves can affect EVs as well in the future?
All in all though, this game seems kind of like something I would burn through way too fast and easily unless I impose handicaps on myself, but I think casual audiences and busy adults(like Arlo) will appreciate the changes. It’s not really for me, but I like the new things Nintendo are trying out. Maybe a mix of wild grass encounters and actual pokemon encounters that roam around will be a cool compromise! Looking forward to Pokemon 2019. :)

I honestly hate the argument that games should be piss easy just to appeal to the casual audience. Many games I played in my childhood didn't hold my hand nearly as much as games like these, and this is coming from someone who got into video games via the _Wii and DS._ If I ever died in a level, it was because of my own lack of skill. A game should teach you through it's gameplay and thus make you better at it, not hold your hand so it can be super easy.

I thought that for a while until I saw my little brother (17 yo) play a Pokémon game recently, we had always grown up with Pokémon and as I grew up I turned into a “gamer” but he stayed as a “casual” and seeing him play now hurts me deeply, he would always struggle because his Pokémon where all different levels and he would teach his Pokémon redundant and bad moves, he taught them physical move even if there a special attacker, and he simply didn’t fully understand how to maximise his Pokémon’s abilities,
And seeing that I get now why us gamers get frustrated when games hold your hand
But the casual audience appreciates it greatly because they don’t have the right thinking process of how to maximise your abilities, that’s going to be true of any rpg
This in part is why Pokémon go got so popular, it was the franchise everyone loves and remembers, but it’s easier to get into and enjoy

@@Grimpachi I mean that even though there were bound to be hand-holding games on those consoles, there were still games that challenged the player's skills. Let's look at Mario Galaxy 2, for example. It teaches you how to use the Cloud Flower, Yoshi, and other mechanics like how certain platforms work, and then puts those skills you learned into the final level with only 1 wedge of health, so there was no room for error. Earlier Pokemon games didn't hold the player's hand. Zelda BOTW doesn't hold the player's hand. Mario Odyssey doesn't hold the player's hand. Even NSMB doesn't hold the player's hand. It should be the player's skill alone that should progress the game, not the game's hand-holding.

I feel like most design choices in this game are cancelled out by other design choices. Catching lots of Pokemon gives you candy to make your Pokemon more powerful... which you don't need since catching lots of Pokemon makes you overlevelled. Playing in docked mode let's you play through the Kanto region on the bigscreen in HD, which is a dream for old school Pokefans... but the controls are terrible and it's better to play in handheld. The game claims it's a remake of Yellow version... except you're not Red (or Ash) and you rival isn't Blue (or Gary), yet Red and Blue are both in the games anyway, seemingly as themselves, as if they also played through the exact same scenario you just did. And again, you can make your Pokemon super powerful with candies... but there's nothing to do with them after the Elite Four, except for the gym leader refights and E4 refights. I don't know, they're not terrible games, but it felt like they were made by two teams who didn't communicate with each other.

I personally really dislike not being able to fight the wild pokemon for one simple reason: it completely takes away that cathardic feeling of actually training your pokemon. Sure, there are still trainer battles, but the most fun I had with previous entries in the series came from fighting the wild pokemon to strengthen my individual teamates. But now? There's none of that. The connection is gone, since your team is just an accessory you carry around with you thay somehow gets stronger from you just catching wild pokemon en masse. Its made even worse by the fact that your whole team gains exp from every fight from the very start. Sure, old games had the exp share. But you usually didn't get that until you'd made it through a decent chunk of the game. Up until you unlocked it, you had to spend time with each pokemon in your team, training them individually if you wanted them to become stronger. It was this one on one time spent with your pokemon that made you care about them.
Let me paint a picture for you to illustrate my point. Way back during my first pokemon experience, with crystal version, I caught an ekans outside the ruins. Seeing as how little me loved snakes, I immediately took a liking tko him. I trained that ekans non-stop, and when he finally evolved into arbok, I wad thrilled! It felt like such an important milestone that we, as trainer and pokemon, had reached together through hard work. That very same arbok followed me all the way to the final battle with red. I freaking loved that snake, and cared about every pokemon on my team nearly as much, because I put in the time with each and every one to train them by battle.
In every entry I've played in the series since, I've gotten roughly the same feeling. It was never as strong as my first time, but it was always there. In this game though? I feel none of that, not even with my eevee. And it all comes back to not being allowed to train my pokemon. In emulating the style of pokemon go, nintendo has gutted the core experience of pokemon from the game.

You can easily have the “this is kinda tough” experience that I didn’t think I would be getting.

The Experience Share as introduced in X and Y has been one of my least favorite features. I always turn it off in those games. I can’t in this, so I ended up keeping about 24 pokemon I was leveling up and just swapped them out as they leveled up. I like being under leveled in RPGs for the extra challenge, and my method here kept my team between 5-10 levels under even random trainers for the majority of the game.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when playing with one hand, you can use the L/R buttons as the select. It is far easier and more comfortable than needing to move your thumb from the analog stick to the A every time.

It seems he never discovered how disgustingly broken candys are in this game. tried one casual shiny hunt (an hour or two) to get a feel for the new mechanics and Bam, i had enough candy to create a beautiful, juiced up, super Saiyan death machine oddish I didn't even need to evolve or level to destroy everything thrown at me. Before i even had a handful of badges.

After beating the master of digleet them dugtreo I git really board as I really don’t want to grind all of them and I kinda wanted to battle more but a lot of The moves was removed. For example why do they have stealth rock and remove rapid spine? It seam pick and choose what moves they want and I was saddened to learn I couldn’t make my pikachu even learn volt tackle or electro ball to at least make its stick out more but not they seam to dwindle down the move options

Yup, when shiny hunting in the game, you get a SUPER broken advantage because of how many candies you get. Unless you’re really lucky and find a shiny right away, you have enough candies to turn your new shiny into a death machine. I made a completely OP shiny Nidoking by maxing him out with candy and I can blast through the entire elite four with just him.

AwesomeFaceStuff that’s not even it. I’ve always been a fan of the WORLD of Pokémon, but never the actual gameplay. And some of these changes would help me get into the series. But it didn’t go far enough and still has too much of what I don’t like about Pokémon to begin with. I don’t like RPGs. At all. I hate turn based battles and I HATE having to manage XP and items and leveling up. I just want to fight, win, then have my health recover automatically because I survived.
Man what I would give for a Pokémon hack n slash game.

A convenient list of some of the features that are in the main games that came out between black/white and Let's Go that are mentioned in tthis video:
-Sneaking up on pokemon while hearing their cries via pokeradar
    -Catch combos
-Exp share being on for all pokemon (with the ability to turn it off in past games)
-Pokemon caring about you letting them hold on with 1 hp/recover from status out of love
    -Easier stat management
    -The removal of HMs
    -TMs being permanent
-Riding Pokemon (not nearly to the extent of let's go though)

I totally agree with your presentation comments. I’m loving the game, but it totally feels like it could have been on a 3DS. the thing that highlighted this for me actually was the when I walked past a fisherman south of lavender town. They were all just standing there with their rods over their shoulders. It’s SUCH a tiny thing but... why couldn’t they just look like they were also fishing?? Also the game corner. Okay there’s some controversy about having a gambling game in a kids game. But they definitely could have replaced that with just a cool little arcade mini game right?
I’m loving the game but it does feel a wee bit lazy

  • @alexroth67
    @alexroth67 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

This is the same comment that I posted on another video regarding this game and what I feel about it.
This game isn't bad per se, but it's definitely lacking in the content department, especially compared to Gens 4 and 5. Heck, even the Gen 1 remakes on GBA (Fire Red and Leaf Green) have more to do than this game does. Riding Pokemon is nice, but ultimately not too important, and the aspect of Pokemon in the overworld sounds cool, until you realize that they just kinda wander around and don't really interact with anything. The removal of held items and a lot of abilities removes more complexity out of an already simple game. The game also handholds you a little too much, even compared to other Pokemon games which are normally criticized for their hand holding. The Pokemon Go mechanics are kind of up to you whether you like them or not, but are pretty hit or miss for me personally.
The fact that there is only the original 151 is also pretty bad, not even allowing you to use later evolutions of Gen 1 Pokemon like Crobat, Slowking, Porygon Z and others.
My problem is the initial price point. If it had been $40 initially, I could recommend it a bit more, but for $60 I would just tell you to wait until the next games to come out. If you really want them, I would wait for a price drop.
Even then I would only recommend this game to people who haven't played since Gen 1, or people who haven't played any Pokemon games in general.
