On the subject of "eventually overcoming the rain," you totally can, and I can confirm it feels awesome. If you memorize when slipping in the rain occurs, you can time out jumps to make a net positive distance up. The rain still increases the time it takes and the minimum amount of stamina necessary, but with enough stamina upgrades rain ceases to be a roadblock.

Yeah it took me a while to figure this out. You slip after a climb jump, and after so many steps/time. So, dont spam the jump, and instead climb a little, then jump. you will slip, but be higher than when you started to slip.
Seems obvious now, but man it was so frustrating figuring it out.

I typically go get revalis gale first and speed run the beasts and ignore the shrines so that I can get revali gale+... JUST because rain pisses me off that much.

You're seriously underrating the viability and sheer speed that shield surfing gives you as an option in the traversal department. It's actually faster than running full speed while a +3 haste potion is active, or sprinting even with a 5 star speed horse!
And even though rain really sucks in this game when you want to climb, it makes shield surfing both faster and easier/smoother to do on certain rough and bumpy terrains that you can't normally or easily shield surf on!

I really like the horses in this game. Easily the best of any Zelda game, and perfect for my style of exploration. Basically I would start at a stable, and go riding off on my horse. Whenever I encountered something I wanted to mess with, like a suspicious pattern of stones or an enemy encampment or a shrine, I would get off my horse, mess with it, then get back on and keep riding. Then eventually I would get tempted far enough off the beaten path-up a mountain or cliff face or across a river or something-that my horse couldn't follow me or it would take too long to go back for my horse, at which point I would... Stop using my horse. I would just continue exploring on foot, and I wouldn't feel even slightly annoyed at it. My horse had served its purpose, and it was purely my own actions that lead to me not having access to it anymore. I found the whole pattern very satisfying and not at all frustrating.

IMO, they could have balanced the meal system by making it so that less complex recipes - like just throwing five meats or five bananas in all at once, turn out less effective items - while more complex, specific recipes - like that Hearty Salmon Meuniere you learn from helping those Rito children for example - turn out more effective meals. thus rewarding players for experimenting with the system or exploring to find rescipe books in the world. Instead they made it so that the strength of what you cook depends on the strength of the base ingredients, making more superfluous ingredients like wheat, butter, cane sugar, rock salt, etc. more of a liability in your recipes.

    • @sleepybinch
      @sleepybinch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

ik this is 6 months old but yea, i've been so dissapointed at trying out the recipes I see on posters or described in books and they only give you like 3-4 hearts despite the complexity. Like, why? Why would I literally *ever* make these actual dishes when I could just stack 3 meats with some wheat and get an actually useful amount of hearts?

on the very brief mention of restoring other parts of hyrule, that would make botw a perfect game for me. the biggest negative for me, and I get that this is kind of the point, is that the world feels uninhabited. again, I understand that that’s entirely intentional, but if instead of my job being “kill ganon and then maybe you and Zelda can fix everything, I dunno” I would rather it be “hyrule is completely obliterated and it’s your job to fix it and then kill ganon so he can’t obliterate it again.” if you could repair and rebuild certain areas, not only would those be good long term goals, but once you achieved them it would give the world that lived-in feel I want it to. maybe not only would you have to restore them with rupees but also materials. I realize that this is a fix to an entirely super duper subjective problem but I still think it would be coolio.

    • @aleblanc6904
      @aleblanc6904 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

While that would be cool, it doesn't fit the story of this game, as Ganon's power is about to be released, and anything you would have done will be wiped anyways. Priorities.

    • @etherflask6380
      @etherflask6380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I can do you one better:
When you beat ganon, instead of a cold stop, Zelda seals ganon away, and then dons her old travelling clothes and takes up residence in Hateno. There she spearheads the restoration of Hyrule, with you doing the legwork, while the people come together to do the building.
She would give you new main quests, telling you what is needed to rebuild certain parts of Hyrule, like to start rebuilding Castle Town, you would need to slay 20 or so Guardians left over from Ganon's ...virus?
After that, you need to bring 100 bundles of wood, and some flint, blah blah blah.
While building, events could occur when you are near, like needing to protect workers from raiding moblins, or putting out fires from lightning strikes.
ideas are everywhere. shame they sorta half-assed the dlc. it could have had all this kinda stuff. =

I agree that they have their uses, battle being one of them. But they don't really work with the exploration thing. I used the stables a ton at first but learned quickly that I just abandoned my horse when I climbed. I would see new things and run off completely forgetting where my horse was or really care. Basically you can cover more new ground without the horses because your movement isn't restricted to the ground.

I agree. I found horses to be quite useful through a lot of the game. There's not always a tower conveniently nearby where you want to go, and even if there is it's sometimes in a bad spot. Also very useful for combat as well as getting away from combat.

it's amazing how the best way to handle the archery contest is actually taking the giant horse, which can't run at a full gallop but whose walk is the fastest, and just.. letting him trot. he's cruise control, and you can focus on the targets instead of your horse

Or, you check out the spot, deal with it, and then attempt to go back. But then you notice one thing. And another thing. And then you see ten things, a lot of which are on mountains. And then you see something from on top of the mountain that's easier to glide to. And then you find a bunch of other things. And an hour later your horse is a few map segments away and you're nowhere near a stable.

As it is, registering things to the compendium just let's you search for them, but it already tells you the general region they're found in, and being able to craft a weapon from materials would be much more convenient than searching a specific area.

I sold all my hearts to the “devil” statue near Hateno, and only upgraded my stamina.
I played the entire game using 3 hearts, and the armor upgrades felt really meaningful to me!The entire game was completely challenging and I really felt rewarded for upgrading every new equipment I needed to traverse the world.
Totally recommed it, you don’t miss out on ANYTHING, and it makes the game as challenging as you decide.

I never said it was a playground? Also odd you'd like it to Sandbox Mario given those games are often described as playgrounds. My disappointment with BOTW is largely derived from a lack of things that draw me to a Zelda game. Barely anything that could be considered a real dungeon, lack of item based progression and an incredibly lackluster story with characters that don't leave an impression, complete with unnecessary voice acting. Again I reiterate BOTW is an excellent game it just doesn't have a lot of what I look for in when playing a Zelda title. I'm sure there are other people out there who feel very similarly and on the opposite end there's a lot of people (such as yourself) who'd never beaten or even touched a Zelda game who got in to BOTW, which speaks not just to the games quality but it's massive gameplay shake up.

I like playing with the "Pro" HUD. It clears all of the clutter off the screen, and you can just use environmental clues to tell you if you're being noisy, if it's too hot or cold, and so on and so forth, so the HUD is really more like training wheels, and totally unnecessary thanks to the built-in indicators for just about everything they give you in the world itself to tell you these things.

Your ideas for crafting was really spot on. The only addition I would make is being able to choose which modifiers players can have on weapons.
    For example:
Say you got another Royal Sword but it came with Long Throw (Again). You can go to a Blacksmith and have him reforge the weapon for a different modifier, in exchange for rupees and maybe crafting materials.
    And seriously, Long Throw sucks.

i still think that a happy medium could easily be established between the people like Arlo who like the disposable weapons and the people like me who hate them. for example the easiest thing to do would be to have blacksmiths around the world like Arlo said but have each of them offer a weapon mastery quest for a specific kind of weapon like one guy on the great plateau has you cut down a certain number of trees for him and in exchange uses his forging knowledge to create a stick that regenerates like the master sword does, then you can leave it with him and access your inventory of regenerative weapons from any blacksmith in hyrule just like you can horses from stables, have one of these quests for each weapon in the game and not only does it retain the disposable nature of weapons it also gives players who want to stick with a tried and true favorite the ability to do that at the cost of using up inventory space on weapons they can only use for a little while before they break. you could even balance it easily by making the blacksmiths judge the power of your spirit before they will help you enhance a weapon basically limiting the stronger weapons to players who have collected more spirit orbs.

Now rebalance food effects so that it actually becomes significant and rewarding, too.

Well you're not getting massive amounts from chests left and right, not nearly as much as in the other 3d games, and you're definitely not getting copious random rupees every time you cut grass. So for once, it's actually believable that they're used as currency. that, plus every vendor letting you sell stuff, indicates a barter-heavy economy, exactly what you end up doing. And it makes sense, the way everything's been pwned. the picori probably aren't bothering to hide rupees around ruined areas. you get a couple under rocks, a FEW inside pots (very few) and that's it.
The fact that there's so much to spend your money on (like there's no finding arrows by cutting grass either, and arrows are NOT cheap, and you go through them like crazy) makes your money relatively precious unless you're spamming amiibos and selling a lot of what you collect, and early on you have no idea whether it's safe to sell any given thing.

I think being able to craft much more stuff would actually take away from the game. The point of this game is to explore, and to _find stuff._ It’s always great to defeat an enemy camp to see what treasure you’ll get. Or to see what treasure you’ll find in a shrine. Or using magnesis to find a chest and then to see what’s inside it.
I could just see people sticking in one place, farming materials to make a bunch of the same weapon. What fun would that be? What you said about using materials you found _exploring_ to craft things would totally defeat the point of _exploring_ in the first place. Why explore and take risks when you can just reliably sit back and make things?
    That’s my opinion at least.

    • @KitCloud1

Scale back the respawn rate of resources, especially if you stay in a particular region. More rare resources scattered across specific regions, required to make certain stuff. Less enemies just carrying high end weapons, leading to a faster rate of going through available weapons and needing to craft more, eating through your resources faster. Not to mention you have to find black smiths to upgrade what you can craft and the various crafting stations in order to craft things. This isn't really that hard to balance in such a way that it's a blatant improvement with almost no downsides.

He used a ton more meals than I would when fighting regular enemies. I realized then that the easy meals and huge inventory are Nintendo's way of making the game accessible to everyone. I think the key is that BOTW gives you choice. Not only can you choose to go anywhere, but you can choose how you play. On my last play through I limited myself to only eating meals fresh (at the cooking pot) and only carrying four bottles, like past Zelda's. It gave a whole new dimension to the game. I rarely carry more than a handful of meals or elixirs now and find it much more fun. Loving this review series!

The reason breath of the wilds rain doesnt bother me is because in alot of scenarios you can find a different way to overcome the obstacle your trying to climb. So for instance if you cant climb up a small structure because of the rain just try starting a campfire (yes it's still do-able in rain) and use the updraft, or maybe bring you horse over and jump off it's back for extra height, or gather metal objects to give you more height. You can even just find a different area to climb up. So yes the rain is a hindrance but if a player is creative and uses the physics and skills at their disposal almost anything the rain stops you from doing can be overcome

You can't exactly light a fire in the open rain, but there's many places where you can find even tiny spots of cover to make a campfire.

When I started watching this channel I never thought it would be the kind I'd eventually be happily watching 40 minute videos from, or one that would offer unique and interesting insight into a game whose mechanics I'd thought had been already picked clean by the internet, not to mention always in such a family friendly way. But here I am.
Thanks Arlo, keep up the good work

This series is a great nostalgia trip. It shows how much variety and charm the game has in every aspect, from the effects of weather and elements to enemy behavior to combat nuances to shrine quests to the economy. And there are still some neat things you haven't touched on, such as the Hyrule Compendium and Kilton's Fang and Bone!
Aboslutely the #1 hook of this game is the sense of discovering all this stuff. It personally took me about 200 hours to get the full picture - right up to Hyrule Castle, I still found neat little things that I didn't expect. :)

    Quick note about Revalis gale.
It's only possible on flat surfaces where you'd just be able to light things on fire and create an updraft.
It's just a matter of cconvenience, Revali's gale doesn't bring you much you don't have access to as soon as you first got flint or a fire arrow.
Also, when it's raining, count five of Link's steps, than jump. You'll gain height doing that. It's still a hinderance, but with enough stamina, you DO eventually get the ability to climb wet walls. Still not enough? That's what Revali's gale is for, since you can't create up drafts in the rain.

The only way they could have improved on this would be to have fishing. Probably the biggest thing I was looking forward to that wasn't included in this department. Could have easily doubled my hours in BOTW, hopefully next game it isn't absent.

I was never fond of fishing and the fact that you can catch fish in BotW in so many ways (I especially like to swallow a stealth elixir and go take a swim with the Zora set under the moonlight) is refreshing.

You just have so many other options in the way you approach everything else, the option to do standard Zelda fishing would be extremely welcome.

Stealth is my favorite mechanic in this game. I spent the majority of my playthrough wearing the Shiekah outfit and loving what I could accomplish with it.
    1) Stealth around enemies when you just can't handle a fight or want to pass through quicker.
    2) Sneak strikes for high damage and less chances of you taking damage in the process.
    3) Easier exploration in enemy heavy areas without alerting them as quickly. Lets me form a plan, if needed, or do any prep work before jumping into a fight.
    4) Collect any bug/creature without needing to crouch (or even walk for that matter). This one is probably my favorite aspect of the mechanic. I've literally run into animals and they still took a second before finally reacting.

    Hello There

Ooh, I LOVE your ideas! A deep weapons crafting system sounds fantastic, complete with blacksmiths and side-quests for unlocking new recipes, and I dig your idea of being able to create offensive elixirs too.
Regarding horses, I was thinking that, like Skyrim, a future Zelda game could have unofficial professions, i.e. services that your character can provide for money (or simply for achievements) but you aren't required to pursue. So, for horses, you could earn money by catching and taming wild horses, which you can then sell to stables. There could also be side-quests dedicated to this skill - a stable that needs ten horses of a certain kind, a knight who needs their horse tamed, etc. There could be an actual cost tied to pursuing this skill - like gear that you need to keep stocking up on, carrots, saddles, etc. But the more you do it, the more benefits there are, like, say, a skill or item later on that lets you summon horses to attack enemies for you. And like the Lord of the Mountain, there could be some legendary and highly elusive wild horses, and taming them could be part of a checklist that earns you some sort of recognition as a master horse tamer for example.
They could create several professions like this. You could become a miner, a hunter, an elixir maker, etc, all of which work as unofficial skill paths that you can dip into and out of as you please.
*I keep saying "unofficial" because I wouldn't want this to feel rigid in anyway. It should feel organic, just a thing that you keep doing because you enjoy it or you find it to be a comfortable way to earn money.

I will say, ive been doing a playthrough where I forego fast travel and gliding halfway around the world and just sorta travel on foot or on my horse, and I can definitely say once you commit to riding a horse often its a very relaxing and fun way to get around Hyrule, plus it really gives you a chance to take in the many beautiful sights on the road! :)

The bonus effects from food is not random. It depends on the bonus effect associated with the ingrediant. If you mix ingredients one effect with ingredients with a different effect they cancel out each other and you get nuetral food. Certain recipes can also graner stronger effects usually involving doubling up on certain ingredients that give bonus effects. Finally the monster essence can potentially create a recipe with extremely long lasting bonus effect (up to 30 minutes).
