- Who says you can't set up a Martin guitar as well as the others? Its all Hogwash and I'm setting out to prove it in this video.

Hey Jerry, You putting grooves in groove-less bridge pins reminded me of an article I read some months ago. Essentially, it said that it was sonically better to put the groove in the bridge/bridgeplate and then use groove-less bridge pins. This would also eliminate having to file an angle on the pin tips, as you recommend, and I've been doing for over twenty years. I haven't changed any of my guitars to this method, but I think all your many fans would be interested in your opinion of this issue.

I like your setups, this one is low. I try to set them .090 big e, .080 small e. After I sand the saddle if it is close, I leave it alone. You did teach me something with the nut, thanks Jerry!

Agreed! I Love the Zager guitars too. You sure did a great job, as always. I also string my strings like you. Only I wrap the top three strings just one more wrap, and then cinch it up.

I like when Jerry says there’s a really good way to prevent nail gouges on the frets. Trim your nails! Can kinda see why he didn’t say it this time. 😁
Wonder if that's why the top is all chewed up above the soundhole? If the owner doesn't trim his fretting nails, he must have nasty nails on his right hand, too.
That was a really good lesson on nut slots. It was really great to hear it go fro that fuzzy sound to so clear with just tweaking the slots to get them not to pinch.

Taking those heavy Grover tuners off the Martin guitars and putting Waverly’s on it helps tremendously! Takes several ounces off the peg head and lets it vibrate! It gives the guitar a much better feel without the weight on the peg head! Plus they stay in tune much better!
I've often thought about the added mass/weight of enclosed tuners; even on an electric... I'd say the ones with a thin metal covering might be preferable to the kinda machined metal chunks. But... I love the feel and ease of tuning of the high ratio, metal chunks; most of my 17 guitars have them.

Sounded like a different guitar when you were finished. Nice work.
When tuning the B string don't tune it open.... Fret the third fret and use your tuner to tune it to D.....That usually makes the B string sound more in tune.... Works best for me....
Hmmm... interesting. The method I use is octave-tuning at the 7th fret; 8th for the B string.
My old J-50 Gibson, you know, with the GD ceramic saddle, was a bugger to tune the B string. I just tuned it in unisen with the open E and left it alone. It wasn't 100% perfect but 99% was close enough to bluegrass that my mates couldn't tell the difference. Bob
Forget the L.R.Baggs pickup, go for K&K Pure Mini. Great sound, no battery... no problems

Must confess for string fitting, I use the 'Dave Doll' method which (for me) is simpler and have never had a string break or slip and it looks real neat. Bottom line is, whatever works that you're happy with.

Hey Jerry. I always enjoy watching your stuff. I’m studying the Luthier business by watching you and some others. I hope to be a decent one one day towards the end of my airline pilot career. I’m also an aircraft mechanic and I love the “science” of building and maintaining guitars and mandolins. Got a question… In this particular case, would you consider compensating the nut as well as the saddle? If you had to do it again? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do that. Not sure what the advantages or disadvantages are?

I never cut my strings until everything is complete just incase I hit a problem and the strings need to come off as its a pain re stringing without length.. them chromatic tuners are just not very accurate at all Jerry invest in a strobe tuner as they are 30 times more accurate to 1/10th of a cent than a chromatic.
Everyone does mistakes and there is only one thing to fix that....do it again and do in the correct way!:)
I do tend to use a string winder...i find the easier than cause you always need to hold the string when you do your method cause i sometimes loose the grip on the string and it slips away specially the unwound strings.

Great Video but the mandolin drowned out the guitar. Would have been better to hear the guitar since that is what the video was about. Great instructional video! I love these! I give this one a 10.
Dagg Jerry, what are ya , stringing with gauge I mean Air craft cable ?
Why not ream/taper the stringholes to match the unslotted pins and also slot the bridge for the life of the bridgeplate? A reamed/slotted bridge with unslotted pins is superior to the standard Martin configuration with straight (unreamed/untapered) pin hole and slotted pins. Helps to reduce wear on the bridgeplate where the ball-end contacts the bridgeplate.

if it was me, i would've put a fresh, new low E string on the sumbeetch. But that's just me.

@@RosaStringWorks i guess i meant, i would not have re-used it after the first time i put it on, and after i had clipped off the excess. maybe a bit of OCD on my part.
to be clear a tight saddle is improperly fit, exact is right but it MUST not be bound at all,,, it is best described as A PISTON, not sloppy for certain but jammed is not right either.

In my experience/s with under saddle pick ups? Is that it sounds more like an electric guitar then acoustic. If I wanted my guitar to sound electric? I woulda bought an electric! Lol! LR Baggs "Lyric" is what I have in my acoustic. Yeah, there's pros and cons with different pickers and sizes of venues and all that. Mostly cuz the Lyric turns the whole "box" of the guitar into a microphone. But as far as a "truer" sound of the acoustic? It's purdy darned good!
What was wrong with the old pins.?
They were unslotted. That bridge setup requires slotted pins.

If they were the original pins, they were probably plastic.
