About 15 years ago I had a fairly expensive Gibson guitar. It had a a slight buzz and the guy I took it to said it was worthless. Offered me $200.00 for it.Total crook. They is an old saying. If you don't know jewels you had better know the jeweler.
Algorithm put this back up for me to watch even tho I've watched and commented. I bought a Tanglewood acoustic last week that was sold as parts and not worth repair ( it was new) for £20. It had definitely been dropped and had a ding in the side and on the top but nothing that would stop it playing. So I get it but it's right handed and I'm a lefty! So back to my small home workshop and order a lefty bridge and I've just concerted it this week! New bone nut and remover the bridge ( old iron trick) and measure everything and fit the new one ( only one pin hole was out) fret job while the glue cures. New lefty bone saddle and a setup! Now it's cost me a total of around £35 Inc the guitar itself. I even fixed the cracks and small dings just because I wanted to and it now looks and sounds absolutely perfect! Your videos have definitely helped me do this little project.
Wow - that's a dismal note! BUT! This clever customer had a back-up plan: ROSA STRING WORKS! In many cases, music stores seem to be on par with STEALERships... I mean auto dealerships. Do the bare minimum, and hope the repair takes. But you cannot resist a challenge! And even if it failed, you'd know that you TRIED, and did the very best job that you could - NO SHAME in that. Fortunately, your persistence paid off! EXCELLENT JOB! No harm, no foul, no charge!
Great to get educated about this, Jerry. I will never again take an assessment of an instrument without a background check and a second opinion. I'll bet the owner will enjoy watching this video.
That's real nice of you Jerry, to hope for incompetence rather than greed. They are both pretty common. If that assessment came from a Guitar shop, my experience says that it is a matter of the policy of that shop, that no one is ever satisfied with any repair that isn't perfect. And, since no repair is ever perfect, why take the chance at a bunch of re-work. Sad, but that is my experience. I had a guitar shop "luthier" tell me that the action could not be lowered on a factory guitar, because they "didn't make the parts". What ar you gonna do? Be well, and keep up the impossible work!
The owner should take this video and guitar to the store. Face them down with it. The next time maybe they won't rip another customer off. Awesome good & honest video Jerry. Thanks for sharing.
Like you said, hope the customer was dealing with a numbskull or a newbie. If it was an attempted rip-off, it is indeed sad. I am happy for the customer that he found an honest, hard-working, God-fearing man in you, Jerry. More power to you, my friend!
Geez... That store should be ashamed! Sales before set-up and repair I guess. I have three local shops and thankfully they are fairly honest. Of course they prefer to sell you a new instrument as its a business. I laugh when the young sales person tries to explain to me that replacing pick-ups on my old jazz bass isn't possible 😉 Thanks for your honesty and integrity👍
Another possibility is that the person who examined it felt somehow determined to uphold extremely high standards, while trying hard to comprehend the sight of this structural oddity which they may never have previously encountered. It might have appeared to them that it could perhaps need a neck reset, maybe some binding repair, and wedging. Plus, they may have felt the guitar might have been dropped or impacted sufficiently to suspect broken or separated braces and/or the neck block. This person showed at least one sign of good intelligence, according to your explanation: They passed it along untouched rather than attempting some costly, ill fated, harebrained "fix". Good sleuthing (& luthing!), as always, Jerry.
A great pity more people don't check out your vids or other TH-cam before heading for the store. Fender acoustics are OK budget instruments and, as you say, even high end instruments have some amount of hump at the neck body joint. You are also a generous man. There's no doubt in my mind the store were after a sale. Probably take that Fender in part exchange and sell it on! Hate to be the previous owner seeing it in the window at double what he go for it......
Got myself a free lawn mower from a "seller & repair" store one time. It was just sitting there and I asked what the problem was. They told me that the motor was frozen. I asked if I could buy it due to I had the exactly same model at home, they gave it to me for free otherwise they would have just scrapped it. Back home I took of the manual starter and found out the cord just jammed. After that was fixed it worked fine for many years ;-) Go figure what repair men / women they had as employees. I assume it was easier to persuade the customer that took in the "frozen one" just to buy a new lawn mower!
I am beginning to appreciate your work and it is awesome. I like how you approach the different problems on those instruments. I like your monologue and honesty on the comments.
It was probably done at a Guitar Center or something and they were trying to upsell the person. I like the sound of that guitar. Its crisp but not thin.
That would be cruel. It probably has some sort of poly on it that won't work well with lacquer. Next best thing would be CA glue. But that would be a large place to fix in a prominent location. It would be a great learning exercise but one probably better suited for a less nice guitar.
I had a 70s fender f-15 I took in beat up to my local guitar shop and they said it was just not worth everything to fix it and just to buy a new one. I ended up buying a new one that day (it was my first guitar) I had no idea how it worked and everything to know how to get a guitar where it’s playable but about a year went by with the old guitar in its case sitting in the garage when I got it out and looked at it and I had to spend 15$ for a guy to replace a tuning key and some new strings and it was playable and sounds amazing. Needless to say that company has since gone out of business Sad they go to that point just to make a sale
Jerry, There's obviously more to it. The dealer appears to be fabricating issues so they can take advantage of an unknowing (inexperienced) customer. It would be nice if you could talk to the owner of the guitar. Otherwise maybe talk to the owner of the store that sent it.
There are a lot of music stores out there who would rather have you buy another instrument instead of repairing your instrument. So many people are too trusting when it comes to instrument repairs. It`s sad to say this, but that`s the way it is...Ask around before taking your instrument to any repair shop.. The good ones (honest) are hard to find...
You mean that you are not going to charge them for a new Guitar! Ha Ha. Some places are unscrupulous if I were the owner of that guitar I will be talking to the BBB and report them! I love that you did not charge them for the repair ! Tell you Customer not to go there again!
Two observations: the human finger can detect a difference of 1/10,000", tw I would hate it if the treble side is higher than the bass side. Action sounds good to me. I always wondered why you tended ( to me) have a higher action than I would like. The string height must follow the radius of the fretboard. Just my views. Yeah some techs at guitar stores are not all that. They don't want to mess with cheap acoustics. They don't have the facility of a full-on repair shop.
My local music store (biggest chain) goes one of two ways- Simple repair cannot be fixed, or "Sure, we'll try a neck reset, we'll need to buy a clamp and some glue so it won't be ready til tomorrow".
I wonder if this was a big box music store...so bad I won't even buy strings there anymore now its either mom and pop guitar store or online depending how soon I need them
This problem is prevalent in a lot of chain stores when it comes to repairing anything. They don't want to repair your stuff, they want to tell you it will cost too much and get you to buy another one from them. Or quote an insane repair cost to trick you into buying a new one instead(It's less work for them!) Apple is extremely guilty of this.
Auto-focus issue: No problem, amigo. My own personal auto-focus is now very unreliable as well. There are guitar shops in my area that simply won't take jobs on less expensive [cheap] guitars. I consider them to be elitists and snobs. Most folks don't own or play exotic or collector guitars. Those people deserve a chance at repairs, the same as the rich folks. That's my opinion. I focus my repairs and mods on those guys, who can't afford the ultra-high rates of the elite.
OOh it's almost enough to make me use bad language, it's not the 1st time I've heard of a company doing that trick. It's just a sad part of life these days , here in England too. Why do you think we are known as RIp Off Britain? Thank you for putting that company to shame and showing us that even big name companies can be a little less than honest !
The difference is that they probably have a boss breathing and yelling in their neck, so every minute counts, or they just don't know what they're doing. Which is also not rare these days unfortunately, not just for guitars but also for electronics and computers etc. But yeah, in the end that's just sad
I've heard that a 1000 times, but with car repairs! "It's unfixable" "not worth the money" and in the end I don't event think they are trying to sell something, it's just lazyness!
Just let the customer know I'm the kinda guy that will buy guitar's with these types of MASSIVE problems. You know, at a MASSIVE discount...wink,wink. Glad they got it to RSW cuz that's a good looking Fender acoustic!
sounds like the repair guy at the store is probably busy and just didn't want to do it, so he lied to the customer because he could tell they didn't know the difference.
A Fender acoustic guitar does not have a "fretboard extension" like a mandolin. Perhaps the slip from the music store belongs to a different instrument. If so, that would explain the discrepancy. I like the pretty finish though!
If Only i got jobs like that one what a god i would appear to the customers, Seriously i think it was a way of getting the customer to buy a new Guitar.
I recognize the tune Jerry is picking. "Jimmy Brown, The Newsboy" It was recorded by The Carter Family in 1929. The original was written by William S Hays in 1875. Here's Maybelle Carter picking it. th-cam.com/video/fupGnsfO6vg/w-d-xo.html

Sad, just sad. I'm glad the owner had the good sense to get an expert second opinion.
I'm curious as to what the owner took the guitar in for in the first place (?)
About 15 years ago I had a fairly expensive Gibson guitar. It had a a slight buzz and the guy I took it to said it was worthless. Offered me $200.00 for it.Total crook. They is an old saying. If you don't know jewels you had better know the jeweler.
Approaching 50k! Good job Jerry, Melissa and Caleb!
Chad Ritchey ,
Let’s hope it hits 100k by the end of the year.
Wow! They didn't notice that the strings vibrated when you strum or pick them!
Algorithm put this back up for me to watch even tho I've watched and commented. I bought a Tanglewood acoustic last week that was sold as parts and not worth repair ( it was new) for £20. Send it back with a picture of Willie Nelson's guitar.
Great point, Tahoe Mike.👍😁😎
Great to get educated about this, Jerry. I will never again take an assessment of an instrument without a background check and a second opinion. I'll bet the owner will enjoy watching this video.
Your massive repair seems to have fixed it nicely Jerry:)
Jerry Rosa: World's Best Grandpa and my favourite instrument repair man and maker!
Thanks Jerry.
Thank you my friend.
That's real nice of you Jerry, to hope for incompetence rather than greed. They are both pretty common. lol dont make the parts, did u tell them they were on the guitar lol wow
Thanks for fixing the nut Jerry! Sounds fine.
Good to see you Jerry! You look better! Hope you are feeling back to normal!
The owner should take this video and guitar to the store. Face them down with it. The next time maybe they won't rip another customer off. Awesome good & honest video Jerry. Thanks for sharing.

I am happy for the customer that he found an honest, hard-working, God-fearing man in you, Jerry.
More power to you, my friend!
The place they took that guitar to was not very honest. I'm glad they let you evaluate it!!
That was the fastest repair I ever seen you do , that was a nice guitar .
Amazing that honesty and integrity on most things these days has fallen by the wayside. You are the exception. Well done.
Geez... That store should be ashamed! Sales before set-up and repair I guess. I have three local shops and thankfully they are fairly honest. Another fantastic video! I got my own workshop cleaned out this week. Jerry you INSPIRE us!!
There are always rip-off merchants. Such a shame. Keep up the good advice Jerry.
One of your better quotes, "It's pretty bad when you hope someone's a dummy." Lol! So true.
Another possibility is that the person who examined it felt somehow determined to uphold extremely high standards, while trying hard to comprehend the sight of this structural oddity which they may never have previously encountered. Sounds like a sleazy store trying to sell a new Breedlove.
I'm just chuckling at that massive repair! Sheesh! I agree that it looks like corporate greed rather than complete inexperience.
Got myself a free lawn mower from a "seller & repair" store one time. It was just sitting there and I asked what the problem was. They told me that the motor was frozen. Good learning curve for the customer.
I am beginning to appreciate your work and it is awesome. I like how you approach the different problems on those instruments. I like your monologue and honesty on the comments.
"Be leery of what people tell you." Best advice I've heard in a long time.
Good job Jerry, you are a great guy, it is a inexpensive Fender guitar, mine was so cheep, I payed about $75, so I could replace the top.
Nice save, Jerry
That fingerboard situation is the reason we set up back-bow from the 15th fret... it is off the body.
Ted from Woodford usually planes a wedge for under the fretboard extension when he does neck resets
It was probably done at a Guitar Center or something and they were trying to upsell the person. I like the sound of that guitar. Its crisp but not thin.
It was a private music store.
Thanks for the lesson on Guitars Jerry!!!!
Nice job Jerry. No Charge??? You are an amazing guy!
Come on Jerry ,no jokes but you set it up so easy for us !
I agree with you Jerry. The guitar sounds good...🎶🎶🎶
Jerry,
I would love to see you turn Caleb loose on fixing that gouge in the finish.
That would be cruel. It probably has some sort of poly on it that won't work well with lacquer. Next best thing would be CA glue. But that would be a large place to fix in a prominent location. It would be a great learning exercise but one probably better suited for a less nice guitar.
Hey Jerry great video who ever sent that guitar too you is a number scull for sure stay safe God bless
I like that guitar. Is it KOA top, neck and all?
I had a 70s fender f-15 I took in beat up to my local guitar shop and they said it was just not worth everything to fix it and just to buy a new one. Great video Jerry! Why did the customer take it in to begin with?
He noticed the gaps around the fretboard extension and neck
Horrible! They shouldn’t be in the business! Great job Jerry!
You mean that you are not going to charge them for a new Guitar!
Ha Ha.
Some places are unscrupulous if I were the owner of that guitar I will be talking to the BBB and report them!
I love that you did not charge them for the repair !

haha I've seen this too. funny what some people think are problems.
My local music store (biggest chain) goes one of two ways- Simple repair cannot be fixed, or "Sure, we'll try a neck reset, we'll need to buy a clamp and some glue so it won't be ready til tomorrow".
A store like that needs to be exposed!!! Who were they Mr. Jerry?
Don't think Mr. Rosa would expose them, he's a Gentleman and Gentleman don't speak Ill of people who might just be ignorant.
now that was a massively great video!
Good techs like Jerry are hard to come by. Seems to be more hacks these days than real techs these days.
Way to go Jerry!
The only gouge here is the one printed on paper.
I wonder if this was a big box music store...so bad I won't even buy strings there anymore now its either mom and pop guitar store or online depending how soon I need them
No it's a locally-owned chain of music stores in Missouri. But not in my area.
This problem is prevalent in a lot of chain stores when it comes to repairing anything. What a beautiful guitar. Would of be a shame if the owner took the shops advice.

I have heard of Guitar stores doing this before. It's most likely to be a salesman trying to con the customer. Sad to say
Really nice guitar maybe the guy at the shop wanted it
Another good MASSIVE REPAIR!
i was quoted about 10 years back 300 to get a bridge made up for my guitar when if i had the bridge blank i could make the bridge myself
The difference is that they probably have a boss breathing and yelling in their neck, so every minute counts, or they just don't know what they're doing.
Which is also not rare these days unfortunately, not just for guitars but also for electronics and computers etc.
But yeah, in the end that's just sad
That's why I will never even buy a pick from the big box music stores.
Hey Jerry, my grandson says I'm the worlds best grandpa!
Shows the value of a second opinion!
Would you mind telling where I can get the gauge you used?
I believe that was covered in the video. I bought it off eBay.
The gauge is an INSIZE 4630-1E. It is available on Ebay for $60 to $65, plus shipping (if any).
Jerry I understand
Truckers cant stand getting their nutz pinched either .
👍
I've heard that a 1000 times, but with car repairs! "It's unfixable" "not worth the money" and in the end I don't event think they are trying to sell something, it's just lazyness!
Beautiful guitar
Just let the customer know I'm the kinda guy that will buy guitar's with these types of MASSIVE problems. You know, at a MASSIVE discount...wink,wink. Glad they got it to RSW cuz that's a good looking Fender acoustic!
It's amazing how laminate can make a cheap guitar look awesome.....Js
I love sarcastic Jerry!
sounds like the repair guy at the store is probably busy and just didn't want to do it, so he lied to the customer because he could tell they didn't know the difference.
No charge! That's too much.
I agree
I guess who deemed this guitar was firewood never saw Willie Nelson’s guitar trigger.
Sad thing music stores are becoming more like used car lots buyer beware. Mr Rosa saves another from the trash LoL!!!
You sure the customer didn’t take this to a shady auto mechanic?
The only issue I see is maybe the lacquer is kind of thick and killing the tone a hair. What a crazy deal...
A Fender acoustic guitar does not have a "fretboard extension" like a mandolin. Perhaps the slip from the music store belongs to a different instrument. If so, that would explain the discrepancy. I like the pretty finish though!
I admire your ethical code and subscribe to it...on good days.
Wow... When you stick someone behind the "repair counter" because your normal guy called in sick... This is what you get.
They just wanted that beautiful fender for themselves
If Only i got jobs like that one what a god i would appear to the customers, Seriously i think it was a way of getting the customer to buy a new Guitar.
Looks like a Guitar Center reciept
Nope it was not a big box store.
Good Man.
I recognize the tune Jerry is picking. "Jimmy Brown, The Newsboy"
It was recorded by The Carter Family in 1929. The original was written by William S Hays in 1875.
Here's Maybelle Carter picking it.

Hi Jerry, YOU would need a massive repair to meet the standards of this ugly world ;)
That shop probally said nope but (picks most expensive guitar out) this one is a direct replacememt we will knock 40 off the price for ya lol
Wow Mr. Rosa...That is just...just, well it's just wrong! Sounds like they ran into a used car salesman.
I have a binding crack as well ... but my wife keeps telling me to pull up my pants when I squat down. Bah-DOOM! All the best, Jerry!
my father had a older gibson es style guitar and took it to the music shop in the late 60s cause the action was high and the guy at the music store told him it couldnt be fixed and that he would sell him a new acoustic guitar, so he did and my dad took the gibson home and gave it away cause he thought it was junk and couldnt be fixed. when he told me this i was so upset cause he has kept almost everything through out his life an would have kept that if he wasnt told it couldnt be fixed and he never learned to play, but i told him it could be fixed and i could have fixed it if he still had had it and id loved to have had it. that it was prob a truss rod adjustment or top came up a little and need saddle lowered or even a neck reset but it was not junk! lol yea people just dont know as much as they think they do lol
Not only are they trying to sell a new guitar, they want a low dollar trade in that they can sell for twice as much as their new garbage
I had a mechanis like that once, he told me my brakes needed replacement even they still had the warranty on them, just dont trust everyone.
Consumers beware the dodgy salesmen. 😔
I can only surmise that he must have taken said guitar to an Apple Genius Store!
The folks who sold that Guitar to that customer are very foolish. And they no integrity truly a shame
