Originalklang Project - Mahler Academy Orchestra

Performing on period instruments from around 1900 the Originalklang-Project of the Mahler Academy Orchestra brought to life the sound of Vienna at the turn of the century. 47 students of the Gustav Mahler Academy, who were selected from over 800 applicants, met outstanding musicians from Europe’s top ensembles in South Tyrol. Together they learned historic playing techniques of the fin de siècle and played on the very instruments that Gustav Mahler bought for the Vienna Court Opera during his directorship. On September 8, 9 and 10, 2022, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was being performed on period instruments in Toblach, Bolzano and Ferrara
The Originalklang-Project was created by conductor and curator of the Gustav Mahler Academy Philipp von Steinaecker who also directed the performances. The academy worked closely with Prof. Dr. Clive Brown, the leading specialist in the field of performance practice of romantic music.
