HISTORY
This C230 was delivered in January 2007 as a personal lease in Washington state. The first owner kept it for 2.5 years and drove only 7.5K miles, with regular servicing at their dealership. It was sold as a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle to the second owner in August 2009. They kept it for just over a year and 7K miles while continuing the regular dealer service. The most recent owner purchased the C230 in January 2011 in Nevada and kept it for 10 years, driving only 55K miles and continuing regular service.

The M272 2.5l engine is, indeed, legendary for the catastrophic balance shaft failure, intake manifold failure, thermostat issues and annoying oil leaks that seem to reemerge (over time), even after fixing them. If all of those issues have been addressed by the previous owners, no matter the mileage, the car will perform well. How do I know this? Well, I own one. The issue affects the 2004-2008 years. It's a beautiful car, no doubt, but, these issues are bound to happen. This car was part of a massive recall and lawsuit against Mercedes for how poorly the engineering was done when designing the materials and metals for the engine. Yes. I still own mine...after $8k additional investment in correcting many of the issues mentioned. I truly enjoy my C230. Just do your due diligence. Know what you're getting into. Again, I'm a fan of this car and it's C55 AMG siblings with the M113 V8 engine. Those are quite reliable without all of the afore mentioned complications.

Well you just made my day lol. I got a 2006 C230 two weeks ago with 97,000 km (60,273 miles) for $6500. Car runs great so far, but based on what your saying and what I’ve just read after travelling down the rabbit hole for 2 hours - if I can get 2 or if Im lucky 3 years out of it , I’ll be more than happy.

@@person1113 Ha! 😅 You will enjoy the car. Rides and runs smooth. Decent acceleration. If you are strict with regular maintenance and upkeep, she'll last, at least, 90k miles, if it was babied by the owner before you. Sounds like you have a cream puff that was cared for. The balance shaft will be the first to go. The minute you see an engine light, go straight to a trusted Mercedes-Benz specialist. No fly-by-night types. The P0016 and P0017 codes are chillingly called the Codes of Doom. Either replace the engine with a later model sorted version, or, replace the balance shaft gear, which runs the length of the engine front to back. $3,500 to $5,000+ USD for this fix.

I've had mine for 13 years and over 150K miles now...no problems. I don't ever want to get another car as she's a 6 speed manual which are now extinct in the wild.

So true, I do prefer the M276 over the M272 because the balance shaft, but other maintenance is more DIY on the M272. I do the the the M272 has more chances of oil leaks than the other, I've only had cam sensors leak oil @ 137k. but The W203 is far more fun to drive than the W212. Oh, it's smooth and quiet. Moves vey well for a heavy car, but the 230 reminded me of my E46, nimble and quick.

@@HotMike FML It looks like my time has come. Yesterday I had extremely low power while driving and had to floor the gas pedal to move from a red light - it was really weird. Would you say this is an intake manifold issue or a balance shaft issue?

@@OklahomaProudBoys How did you know when to replace the intake manifold? Did you have loss of power? How much did it cost you roughly in US dollars? I think I need to replace mine now. Had to step on the gas to get the car moving from idle. It has always been a pain to get the car moving from idle but now the car is really acting up
