One of the most intellectually surreal videos I've watched/listened to by you concerning the idea of Time, Specificality of Space + Sound. Cicadas create the sound and emotion of warm Summer evenings. That ebb and flow of their Soundscape is at times quite shrill, then their song grows slowly quieter as if orchestrated, they all begin their song again together... I used to collect the shells of their beautiful bodies- so delicate as hundreds of them clung to all the Trees in our neighborhood. Fascinating singing/scratching Insects. Lovely video.🦎💥🙉🎵💡
Thanks for the reminiscence! The ‘87 brood is the first summer I vividly remember from childhood. I thought the shells were a feature of every summer. We had collections of them stuck to tree trunks and playsets 🎶
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC YES ! I taught my sister's boys when they were kids all about collecting Cicada body shells off the Trees and they were so excited running about collecting them and showing their Mom and Dad what "Achoo", their Aunt {me}, had shown them to do!!! My sister screamed "Throw those filthy things AWAY and go wash your hands!!!" It was hilarious. So the two boys came up to me sad + crying, & relayed what had happened. They wanted to bring them home SO much that I told them that's alright, let's go and collect some more! They were elated. Afterwards I put the Cicada Shells in separate zip-lock bags, gave each boy their collection and told them to just hide the bags from mom & dad, they'll never know! They were jumping up and down laughing saying Yay Achoo! Thank you!!!. Then I explained to them the strange LOUD sounds Cicadas make. Every time that sound was heard I'd tell them "That's the Cicadas singing...do you hear them all?" They were awe struck. Such good times we had~💡🌌👾
Love your videos; always thoughtful. But also, that bit of strangeness that pushes it subtly into magical realism. Keep making great stuff. Physical objects but also slightly dreamy smart & creative videos.
I have been diligently gathering the cicada choirs in the mornings before they start to sound all "crikety" in the afternoons. Fun fact. Every sample I have of them is naturally either spot on or very very close to an E/E#. Totally baffled by this. Cheers.
I have a dream that one day I will fly from Frankfurt/Germany to JFK airport, rent a car and drive to the Make Noise factory/office just to say hello and have a tea with you 😀
Interesting rhythmic application here, but with the cicadas themselves it's all about the drone. Here in the mid-Atlantic they're in full emergence now, singing during the daylight hours and they are LOUD. I've been sampling them for various uses (sound-wise, not food-wise) but their unadulterated drone is amazing; steady hum with oscillating waves of sharp buzzing and overtones. Humans can make some amazing sounds but nature will always have us beat.
Funny....I have a huge and loudly cicada-consert outside my jungle studio just now... and a Strega + O Controll in my studio...I also have a chair and some books..... life is beautiful 🎼
Prime number clocks?! I love it. Sometimes I have an LFO on the clock rate of a burst generator that fires events somewhere. This is in reference to the day/night cycles of pedestrian numbers in a city.
@@benjaminwirsching i am interested, especially as i plan to do some field recordings if possible around here and could be fun to compare. walker at makenoisemusic dot com
I wonder what the 2014 shared system cv bus would look like in the background perched on a make noise stand..reminds me of the Roland Juno 6.. Not by function or sound but by silence regarding importance of synthesis and vintage aesthetic ..low key
This is completely fucking brilliant! Goddamn! I'm hoping to order Tempi and Morphagene at the end of July (please make some more stock!) and this video is giving me all sorts of ideas!
Clock,.......?? You mean like Tempi?? I payed for one around six months ago, and it has been on back order ever since. Are you guys ever going to make any more of these modules?? I would love to play with one,............but it never seems to arrive. Seems you have time for lots else.
I promise you there is nothing we will love more than to get our instruments into your hands. We're working hard to get everything back in stock as fast as we can. We apologize for the delays.
I do get ideas from the natural world but hardly ever go down the rabbit hole like Walker does. Me doing cicadas would sound be analogs of what they sound like to my shallow ears: thousands of short shrill phrases over lapping (conversing?)
I recall being told that there are three species of long-period cicada, and that each of them has an 11-, 13- and 17-year sub-species. Insects in the UK are seriously dull by comparison…
Incredible video Walker. Really feels like a synth tutorial video that would exist in the Twin Peaks The Return universe? Really enjoy when y'all get weird with it lmao
Cool video, but boy, do I dislike cicadas! I’ll take crickets instead. Birds! Birds are great! I didn’t grow up in the south, but do live there now, so cicadas are not a childhood memory for me. .Good idea to use nature as inspiration, though.

A strong Twin Peaks feel on this video, I love it! The owls, or in this video, cicadas, are not what they seem though.

I was wondering if the table was Formica
Love the straight-up nature montage.
If my 3 year old is considered part of the natural world, he is a pretty amazing random patch generator.
Mine too!
An amazing man doing amazing things 🙌🏻
Great video !!! Love the make noise building
Me too!
THIS is a fantastic outstanding video, thank you!
Great video. Taking these to another level! Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you liked it ⚡️

Great video, so creative. Makes me wish I was young again. Shush a great company to do business with!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it ⚡️
Alright, it’s official. I’m a fan. Time to get some Make Noise bed sheets.
That was very Lynchian. Felt like I was watching Twin Peaks: The Return for a minute.
Pretty sure that’s what he was going for.
So the hairstyle was a hint?🤔🤔🤔😜
Came to say the same thing ha
My math skills improved since I watch your channel.
Nice! ⚡️
Super cool video guys! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks!
This was fun. Thank you. Now I want a Tempi. Hope the supply chain cycles are as perpetual.

Interesting observation! Perhaps there's a geometric reason for this? Something to look into, thanks for sharing!

Absolutly love it ! I wonder if there are circadas in my shared system which always seems to play its own Way.

Interesting patch! So when the LFO goes positive it is "daytime" and negative "nighttime?"

Make Noise: The Return
😉
Ah, good to have you back. This was a fun one to watch. I’m unsure if you had erasure head in mind when producing, but it had a similar feeling.
I often have Eraserhead in mind ✏️
It makes me think a little bit of the Conway's Game of Life :-)
I can see it!
Man, are we about to go full breadtube video essay? I'm down with it.
this is so good.
I' am wandering how cicades and The Wogglebug will interact with each other?
Uncertain the future is (yoda). Maybe the wogglebug made them emerge after 17 years.
🤣 Glorious, Walker 👍🏼
No cicadas here, but a guy who sells potatoes and blurts into a megaphone to do so.
I have sampled him 🤪
A little too far North for cicadas here but I'm still looking forward to field recording some katydids
i'm hoping we're not too far south! Might have to make a road trip
I have plenty of samples of the cicada choirs from up in ohio. I'm happy to email them to anyone that wants them. all raw and untouched.

ASAP!
