@Forrest Lambert The 5 amp will probably work at low volume, but as you turn up the volume, the radio will draw more than 5 amps and probably burn up the power supply.

I did something similar back in 1995 when I was in the 7th grade and was broke. I had an old car radio, and an old AT (not ATX) computer power supply. I used the 12v off of the old power supply to power the radio. I used a cassette tape adaptor with an AUX cable (they were used to connect portable CD players to car radios) cut the cable and spliced it into AV cables and connected them to the sound out of my Super Nintendo. A friend had two home speakers that he let me have which I connected to the speaker outputs.
The radio was broken which is why I got it for free. I found out that the cassette wouldn't line up causing muffled sound. I found out that if I slightly pried the cassette adaptor up it would sound normal so I used a spoon jammed into it to achieve this.
My mother always hated it as she thought that I would "burn down the place" as she used to say. hahahaha.
Honestly the best and simplest most understanding instructions ever on hooking up a car stereo....others on youtube are waste..thanks bro

Thanks, very clear explaining. We had lots of salt issues living on the beach so we went 10 years ago for this system. It works great no more problems and we hooked up our old speakers and we're ready to go. Another benefit is the easy swapping between an old and a new radio.
Marine radio would be ideal for this...

Did this back in the early 80s when I worked in a garage. Pioneer KP-500, Jensen 6 x 9 speakers mounted in triangular boxes, power source was an old battery charger. Worked great.

Using Toids instructions I repurposed an old JVC El Kameleon (AM/FM/Single CD) car stereo I had laying around to drive my (2) Bang & Olufsen CX50 and (2) CX100 speakers. The El Kameleon has RCA inputs, I purchased a stereo RCA to 3.5mm jack cable that allows me to directly plug into a Bluetooth receiver module or any source that has a 3mm headphone type jack. Thanks Toid, My system sounds great!

I just bought a Pioneer DEH-X3800UI car hifi for this very reason, the sound quality from these pioneer head units is amazing, but you need a good power supply to get the best sound, 14.2v at 15 amps, these are designed to run from a battery (cleaner power) so a good psu is essential for decent sound quality and long life of the hifi itself.

I used to have the same alpine stereo in a lotus Elise 18 years back! It was my x husbands car and I bought him the stereo for a birthday present.
I think I had that in my first car when I was in high school and its still my favorite of all time something about alpine there the best

@Skyg Walker308 you would need a step down dc-dc converter since it needs 12v. I doubt 13v is close enough, might go into safety

I have always fancied having a car stereo for home use so I can run it with a 12V battery If need to. Thank you for telling me how to hook up the antenna and had always thought I would have to get it from a wrecking yard somewhere.
I have a very good sounding Sony head unit (Sony CDX-FW570). It sounds extremely good. I lost my car in a wreck however and I would like to try this as this head unit sounds great. When I end up buying another car, I will be putting that head unit back in. For those in my situation, use wiring nuts instead of soldering. That way, you can install your head unit into your new car with ease.

I did this with a car battery and a solar charger to recharge the battery. Also made sure the positive and negative never touch or are exposed. I blew out a good unit like that. Good video!
Great idea in current times when the price of electricity is sky high. A deep cycle marine/rv battery would be perfect to get through cloudy days or dark nights during winter. Those 12V automotive solar panels are cheap.
By using an inverter on the deep cycle battery, could likely charge up a laptop too. Might come in handy in case of a power outage to use a phone or laptop to check for power company updates.
damn only now you guys figured it out? we been doing this since the late 80's early 90's back we we were in high School. an ac/dc convertor works better just like the ones in the stereo shops

I just did this! But, there's an easier way than splicing power wires together. The replacement power supply I found on Amazon came with a two-port adapter for the positive/negative leads. It was only $11. It's the "Kastar" ac adapter (12 v ~ 6 a).
The entire setup (including where I wanted to place it) took me literally 5 minutes.
Now I just need better speakers!

a little trick you can do with almost all aftermarket car radios is run them on 16V. ive played with a dozen of these things on my bench and all the digital logic in internally regulated and the power amp IC's in them are almost ALWAYS rated up to 18V. Some of the very very new, like 2017+ decks the power amps are even able to safely drive 2 ohm loads at UP TP 16V! almost 40Wx4 of unclipped power. but heat does become an issue.

In my case went a bit further. Pioneer head unit with remote capability, speakers in 3 rooms, and raspberry Pi is turning it on (set to AUX) while giving options on web GUI to play music from NAS or TuneIn app. Cat5e's as speaker wires.
Kind of no-brainer to put carstereo to home environment //compared to home system prices I was considering.

If you add an on/off switch in line with the red wire, you would be able to turn the head unit on or off like you would with the keys to your car. The yellow is the 12v constant that keeps settings and time saved

Haha, I am sure you are joking. But if the room is small enough, then yes. Although, you would need a much bigger power supply (something like the x-box 360 or a computer power supply) to output enough watts to get your subs and amp moving that loud.
Yes, as long as you check the impedance of the speakers and head unit. Most car head units will hook up speakers between 4-8 ohm speakers just fine. If you are concerned, you can always check your car stereo manual, which is typically free online.
P.S. The speakers in the video are 8 ohm speakers. Also, the size of the speakers does not matter.

I have a grundig one with 2 edge woofers and 2 6by9s and 2 tweeters and sounds great
For those who ask what power supply they should use the answer is: 12V DC (not AC), 5A (it should be enough current. If not you may hear distortion or unit will stop working properly on higher volume), 60W. Exact current draw depends on your unit model, some chinese ones have really weak amplifiers, some better brands may have more powerful ones, witch will require more powerfull psu.
Thaks for pointing out the difference between AC and DC power. I sometimes forget to make the differentiation, but it is not something to be overlooked.
AC voltage is like sine wave. At certain points it becomes negative, so it can damage electronics because of wrong polarity. DC is constant voltage. You can use AC supply or transformer, but you will have to use rectifier bridge and some filter capacitors. Have in mind that if you have 12V AC supply, ac converted to dc voltage will be 1.4 times higher.

Well, when it comes to Power Supplies, you really should only power it with one that has the same or more Amperage along with 12 Volts. Like My stereo is a 12v 10A Stereo and am running a 12v 17A power supply with a secondary 10A fuse line and runs fully as if it was still in the car with radio and everything working. You can power it with any 12V but how well it'll power it and how loud you can get it is determined by the Amps that Power Supply is pushing.

Dave M so what if I said I'm running 1500 watts, a pair of tens and a pair of fifteen, (house speakers), and gettin ready to drop in a couple 6x9's, but receiver needs rebuilt so I want car CD player in meantime. If it's a car stereo I can use amp, compacitor and maybe still have the power I'm use to right? You say under 200 watts, that won't even make the lights dim when it turns on
You can get a cheap head unit at Walmart for twenty bucks
Go on eBay and you can get a name brand unit for $20. I just got an Alpine CDM9821 from Goodwill for $25.

My first stereo system as a teen was an 8-track player connected to two car speakers with enclosures, and I ran them off a 12 volt power supply my dad had. Hi fidelity? Nope, LOL. But it was cool at the time.
You did not cover your soldered power supply leads, electrical tape or shrink tubing will work, they could short out against each other.

I did this to an old kenwood car minidisc player that even has a remote, also put in a headphone socket and a power socket so it could be more mobile and use it with headphones, put a couple resistors in on the headphone jack to have a more balanced volume control and to completely remove the wow and flutter coming off of the speaker lines as that is where I tapped into. makes a damn fine little hifi though.

think this has helped. trying to fit a stereo in my boat (one was already fitted but it was dodgy and worked some days and didnt others. so i got a new second hand stereo and going to get ne wires and things i need to hook up to car battery and also charge with solar panel. that should work right? lol

I'd like to add a tip, finding a 12v/10A source is a bit difficult, I was able to supply power using 2 12v/2~3A independent supplies.by connecting them parallel via diodes.

You can disconnect the yellow that tells it to turn on basically add a switch yellow to power (red)
@@Kaabosurron Agreed, it's basically the ignition switch. Tells it to keep memory by drawing from battery. You can hook up a 12v backup battery for memory or keep it in standby at all times
@@godfatherdon3392 the backup memory is not enough! These car head units use 20-50 mA standby current! Thats why the car batterys going down after a month, if you dont use your car. Plus other electronic consumers like security box, car computer etc...

if you can pickup the imprint unit for that you can do time alignment and full dsp with an external amp.

Salvadorz lopez the ground is the black wire. When connected as the video instructs, the ground will be grounded as any other electrical device in your house. So no other ground is necessary

A cheap computer power supply can provide over 20 amps on the 12v rail (some go up to 36 amps).

Have this setup in my shop. Had a sony xplod laying around. Radio, cd, aux, blue tooth. Linked my old iphone 4 to it for pandora, iheart etc. Thinking about wiring in an amp but its pretty loud as it is.
I want to wire an amp up to mine. Wonder if I can run it off same power supply?
