    please guys use use thicker wires on car amps... this one's fuse says 30A so it will probably need about 20 amperes, those thin wires no way can support that. the amp either will shout down if you turn the volume up, or the wires will get hot and melt either way Bad. there's a reason why car audio installs use at least 10 AWG wires...

    • @Toid
      @Toid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Wire gauge is dependent on two factors, amperage and length of run. In this video I am running a 12v 20amp power supply and running the power less than 1 foot. Based on those calculation, you only need 18ga wire. I am running 16 gauge. Now, if I were to run it at a typical length in a car, 20 feet, I would now need at least 8 gauge wire. You should always use a calculator to check to see what the least wire gauge you should use is. As you stated, if you do not, you could start a fire. Here is the calculator, I use. before I run any of my power wires: bulkwire.com/help/recommended-wire-gauge-calculator This will at least give people an idea of what wire to run. You can always run 1 gauge higher, just in case. Thank you for helping explain the importance of wire gauge when running power.

      honestly I didn't know that wire gauge is dependent on wires length also, it's good to know but I still wouldn't use such thin wires to power a car amp. maybe it's just me wanting to be on the safe side. out of curiosity I might do a test with a thin and thicker wire, same length, playing a bassy song or even better a low freq sine wave, turn it up and see if the wire gets warm or not

    • @Toid
      @Toid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a great idea. Just make sure you are running at least the minimum gauge wire. Mine never even got a hint of warm and I played it for hours afterwards, just to break in the sub a little. That was actually the first time I hooked the sub up. On a side note, I completely understand wanting to be safe. I would much rather be safe, then to burn something. I actually pinned your post, so that others know the importance of using the right gauge wire. Thanks again for bringing it up. You can never be too safe.

      The reason your lights dim, is that you are creating a shortage in your electrical current. Basically, you are drawing so much electricity (when your bass hits it draws even more) that you do not have enough current for the rest of your components. If it were me, I'd turn down some of your gains. Unless you really need that much bass, you do not need your gains that high.

      That's not the information needed to know if it will pressurize a room. However, any subwoofer, if it pressurizes a room too much, can crack a window.

    your voice is very soothing..and a awesome video. i never thought i can find power supply with higher amp besides a computer psu.

    • @blackriflesmatter
      @blackriflesmatter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I would run a computer PSU over that bench PSU any day. PC Power & Cooling make some of the most well regulated power supplies in the industry and they can be had reasonably cheap. An old school 500w ATX psu will have multiple 12v rails and one of the 5v rails can be used as the remote turn on source for the amp, or even one of the other 12v leads on the PSU.
      Another thing about computer PSU's is that the power regulation is much more robust and the 12v rails on modern ATX PSU's are designed to operate at 12v continuously with very little variation. They also have fans which help the transformers stay cool under load.
      Lastly, most current 600 watt (and above) ATX PSU's will have at least one 30-35 amp dedicated 12v rail which is more than you will ever need for a 400w DC amp, and if the PSU you choose has multiple 12v rails, they can be combined to proved the aggregate output across both rails. In other words, if you need 50 amps, you can combine the 35 amp 12v rail with a 15 amp 12v rail and have the power you need on tap.
      Go for the ATX PSU.....

    That kicker amp will draw way more than 20amps than that power supply has offer and u really need a 15volt powers supply cause the voltage will sag bad at 12 volts and clip the amp but its the right idea hes showing u so thumbs up for showing guys how to do it not bashin u brother just speaking from lessons learned

      You can turn these up to 14.8 which is what I did. yes I agree 20 A is not enough especially for class ab amplifier. I went with a 40a

    I always thought a car stereo head unit would be choice for these homemade super ghetto blasters because you can use the fade front to back to split the volume between the high range tweeters and small speakers and the mid-range drivers so that you can control the blend with the head unit's fade controls on like a 4+1 channel amp. I also thought having an automatic extending and retracting radio antenna would be pretty slick too.

    hi there
    the video you made a couple mounths ago were you showed how to hook up speakers to a car stereo got me thinking about a few things. And one of them is how many speakers can you concet to the stereo. GREAT VIDEO!
    greetings from Sweden!

    • @Toid
      @Toid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Glad it helped. The simplest answer is 6 (2 front speakers, 2 rears and 2 subwoofers) However, if you have external amps and the power for each one, you can hook up significantly more.

    I just found and subd to this channel a couple hours ago. What are your thoughts on using an xbox360 power block to power an in home amp? If you happen to have on to test the and do the quick calculation to find out the average power it can put out/ how much RMS power it could push through an amp. Well I think you understand what I'm trying to say

    • @Toid
      @Toid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CarJacks The Clown I'm glad to hear that. you can definitely use a Xbox 360 power supply if you have one on hand. The only issue is Xbox made 2 or 3 different power bricks depending on the 360. they ranged from 150 watts - 245 watts continuous power. I, unfortunately do not have one on hand to test it out. but I know you can get them relatively cheap.

    Is there any non car amp that can be used with a head unit? Or is there any way to modify the wires out of the head unit? My plan was to make a boom box using a head unit, speakers I built, and bluetooth 2.1 amplifier. The amp also has an aux in plug. It has the speaker outs with more than enough wattage. I cant be within 5 feet at full volume without ear plugs. But no way to connect the speaker wires from the head unit.

      Are you sure the battery is charged? And or can send enough amperage? What kind of battery is it? Make sure none of your speaker wires are touching. What kind of speakers are they? It sounds like you either hooked it up wrong or are using speakers that the amp can't drive (ie check the Ohms). But honestly, it could be 100 different things. Without seeing it, I couldn't tell you for sure.

    Good thing about those "led" power supplies is that most of them have small potentiometer which can be used to adjust output voltage up to 13-14v, on pc power supplies you have to open them and mod them, after that you can just hope that it wont explode :D

    • @charleshendrick7266
      @charleshendrick7266 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      turning up the volts on these has little effect really. On these, as u turn volts up the amperage goes down, and output wattage remains the same.

    • @cekpi7
      @cekpi7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but most car amplifiers are rated at 14.4V which means you are gonna get a bit less power on 12V, my old sony amplifier does about 80w on 12V with psu dropping down to 11V but after i modded it to get 13.7V on output i get 100W so about 20% less on 12V vs 14V

    • @charleshendrick7266
      @charleshendrick7266 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im sure amps circuits vary on tolerances, Just generally speaking tho, output is based on the amperage. On my old PG class D there no difference tween output at the speaker wires tween 12.5 and 15 volts the PS could do. My best results to date have come from using a server PS...12.9 volts but a decent 75amps. Keeping the ohm load within reason it has no problem with max RMS of 500 W @ 4 ohm.... and a whole lot cheaper than buying a PS with the voltage adjust feature.

    • @cekpi7
      @cekpi7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Hendricks Yes, depends on how good power supply inside amplifier is, some will drop rail voltage and clip the signal on higher power draw with less voltage on the input, thats why most people go for 14v or higher in their car, your might too, did you check it with oscope?

  • @incorporeal3793
    @incorporeal3793 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wonders if there would be any benefit from putting a boost converter between the 12v supply and the amp to give it 14.4v.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, except to run a little cooler. But you would lose some power at that cost. You'd be better off just getting a 14v power supply.

    If you were to connect a car battery in parallel to your 12 volt power supply (+ to + and - to -) then you would increase your peak power if you had a large amp and lots of bass from a smaller power supply. I mean you can get power supplies of over a kilowatt but if you have an old car battery knocking around it seems like a good idea.

      Actually that lil PS might not charge a battery. Best option and keeping it simple, get a beefier PS. Server power supplies give the most amps per $ if you buy them used.

    Thanks for this. I do have a question. I apologize if this has already been answered. Is it possible to connect a car stereo to a home receiver, not a remote set of speakers. Basically MacGyver the head unit so that I can connect it to the home receiver with some RCA cables, similar to the way one connects a DVD or other component. I'd like to connect it to the AUX input. Thanks again.

    I live off grid and don't have access to a 110v power source unless I ran a generator. What I'd like to do is have the setup connected to a battery that is kept charged with solar panels. How would I accomplish that?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Your amplifier and stereo all run off 12 volts. Your house supplies 110 volts. If you just used an extension cord, you would fry your electronics, as they would get 110 volts, which is well above their 12 volt operating range. You need to convert your 110 volt to 12 volts. Honestly, these 12v Regulated Power SUpplies are not that expensive (around $20-30).

      Mohamed Driouich Speakers typically aren't powered. They are a passive unit that hooks up to an amplifier. You can hook up your home speakers directly to your car stereo via speaker wire. Just unhook your front or rear speakers and hook up the wire to your home sdpwakers. If your speakers are powered (Have a built-in amplifier? You'd need a power inverter.

      Server power supplies. The ones from data centers like a DPS 750 RB are highly reliable and can produce way more than necessary current for a car amplifier. Each one needs to be able to power all 15 of the 15000 RPM drives that are inside of a server plus the 4 CPUs in case it's Buddy (the redundant power supply) that it's working in tandem with fails. so they're extremely overpowered. . . you just have to Google how to hotwire them to turn them on and then figure out how to connect your power wires either to the posts or the tab contacts. I picked a 750 because it's got plenty of power and the fan on it is very quiet and it doesn't get hot on its own. I'd stay away from any of them that have a heat sticker or a "don't touch hot "sticker.

    How to hook up a car stereo in your house? First you have to get the car inside your house. That can be a bit tricky! 😅
    Figuring out big a power supply can’t be done measuring the power available at the output of the amp. Also, don’t be fooled by the rating they give to and amp. 500 watts is at 10% distortion, not clean. Car stereos use bogus specs to fool people into thinking your buying a better amp. Remember, at 1% distortion is when the signal coming from your amp is audibly distorted. Anything below 1% is relatively clean. Clean sound is what you want to listen to music playback. Also make sure it’s frequency range is as wide as possible. It should be 20Hz to 20KHZ. Anything less is only part of the signal, and you might be loosing a bit of your music. Back to the size of the power supply your going to need, there should be a power consumption spec. Add up that spec for all the components in your signal chain!

    It's not RMS it's how many amps between the car stereo in the amplifier getting 12 volts is easy getting enough amperage to keep up or even turn the system up is the hard part! RMS is the recommended power rating for the speaker and how much the amp or stereo can put out. 12 volts will turn on the amp and radio. But if the car radio is 20 amps and the amplifier is 40 amps you can't even turn it up without it shutting down.
