I bought one of these (mini-bike style frame) without the rear suspension. I very quickly realized that it would beat me to death and was too hard on my back. I built a framework that I put between the seat and frame with stiff springs (automotive valve springs). That improved the ride immensely. It also raised the seat which made pedaling easier as well.
Good idea. I used a suspension seatpost and nicer seat on my DIY ebike build (it has front suspension already) and mostly it handles things just fine, but I still need to get up on the pedals for the big ruts or it will bottom out and fuck up my spine....currently healing very tenderly from such a rut and in need of a better suspension seat post.
Does it matter that much? I've always had push bikes without any rear suspension and they seemed fine. Is there a difference with a moped that means you need it, or is it just in general they're easier on the back?
Great Review! You covered all angles of the pros and cons. I noticed most E bikes you always have a longer wait time for assembly and they sell out. This is the case for Himiway models. For now I will look out for lesser assembly time.
You are so handy. That was a great review. I have a Nakto Pony as my first ebike. I ordered a radrunner but had problems with order so I went with something more affordable. I love the electric ride. I started with one of those skateboards with a seat and handlebars. Im an older rider an this has bought cycling back to me. Has more virtues than a motorcycle. No registration- no gas. This is the wave of the future. Onward!
Liked the comparisons between the styles of ebikes, I recently bought a Himiway Cruiser Step-Thru after watching your videos (plus alot of other reviews). It is my first ebike and will replace a very aged (but loved) mountain style bike. I'm 73 and have ridden the regular bike on errands numerous times , but would like to go a little further for some errands and I think the ebike will help with this without tiring me out. Great to have your Ebike School informing us as to the reality of these style bikes. The industry embellishes and knowing truth over fiction (in some important areas) is important. Important because they cost so much! We need to know what we’re getting into. All your points were spot on. I have a Juiced Hyper Scorpion with no issues 8 months now. The range was not as advertised in the realistic sense. I have put a 52v 30ah battery on the rear in a Pelican hard case with a parallel on/off switch. Solves the range anxiety problem and as is with these bikes, allows the time to enjoy them fully.
I live in a mountainous area and have a somewhat similar bike from a competing brand, currently packing 76.8 Ah which on throttle-alone gets perhaps an anxiety-less 125 miles which is fine for most days but it's 45lbs of batteries and as-sold I should be getting 225 miles, I've been taking it in baby-steps because I won't be pushing this one up a mountain home... 🤗

Interesting class of bikes. As you were talking about speed I wondered how much speed fades as the battery discharges. I built an electric motorcycle and the top speed on a fresh battery is much more than on a 50 pct discharged battery.
Thanks for this video, there are a few bikes like this popping up in Australia and this is a good explanation of the strengths and weaknesses of the style. Here we are "legally" restricted to a max of 250watts and top speed of 25kph. But given at least some appear to be electronically speed restricted one at a stretch may be able to argue/set the bike to meet the 25kph speed restriction. I have read that some of the ebikes coming into Oz from China have a 250watt sticker on the motor but are actually 300 - 350 watts. I guess the ideal situation is to have a motor that is not physically large and hence attract attention and launch Adobe Indesign or Illustrator and make a clearer and larger 25 watt sticker. 😁

Plus the idea is to phase out carbon emitters in an attempt to restrict global climate change. Resulting in extreme weather events, such as, the catastrophic floods in Europe August 2021
@@dant.6364 - People won't give you a second look when you ride an electric, pedal-assist bike on a bike path in a park. But a motorized bike will draw attention and likely get you a ticket.
I've taken my bike to REI a handful of times for help and they never charge me because I help them problem shoot and they always chock it up as a "learning experience" thank you REI
Also another thing I am thinking about: I just saw a video about recycling companies that salvage the lithium and other elements out of spent batteries... In Maryland, where I live, these bikes require a moped license plate from the MVA if they go 30 MPH or make 2 hp. I chose the smaller 750 watt juiced bike to slip under the requirement.
I do have to say. Those moped style E-bikes move faster then actual bikes in most cases and are often on a similar scale with actual mopeds. So for safety I do recommend wearing actual moped helmets and gear.
Mopeds in general have never really been great to pedal on many of the older original 2 Strokers. the Pedals were basically used to go about 10 to 20 feet with enough speed to start the gas engine the older ones didn’t have electric starters or kick starters as a rule in the 1970s i ran out of fuel on one and thought well i’ll just pedal home it was only 4 miles but it was uncomfortable as can be thanks for your video and information on these Ebikes

Interesting, but I really enjoy the pedaling on my E-MTB. I did add a throttle to my build and find I used it when I stripped out a crank 10 miles from home, and sometimes to zip across an intersection while stopped and I am tired from a long ride...otherwise I dig my ride.... but maybe build out a minibike style off roader with real fat tires!
Australians who want a bike like this that fits our regressive power regulations of 250W, check out the Dirodi Rover, and the Ampd Bros Ace. The Dirodi is cheaper, but it lacks the nice-to-haves like hydraulic disc brakes, and a suspension fork, but it's still a fairly comfortable ride on roads and sealed trails. The Ampd Bros Ace has those, but also the disadvantage of being technically illegal. It has a 500W motor limited to 250W, and, while I don't know about other states, I've gotten clarification from Vic Roads on that point in particular. Doesn't matter if it's limited to 250W, it's still over-powered, and you _could_ get stung for it. Extra power would be nice, but we've got to work with what we've got, and stay _within the law_ so we can argue from the moral high ground for better. We don't want to be lumped in with "hoons" who are bolting modified garden equipment motors to their bikes when we say we want just a little more oomph for taking hills easier. Even with the 250W motor on the Rover, I can take roughly 30 degree hills at about 15 km/h. 10 km/h if I start on the hill. It's not the worst thing in the world. It at least has the torque to not completely stall out while climbing. Still, it sure would be nice if I could have a 750W motor. I'd buy an Ariel Rider in an instant.

I'm assuming by VIN you mean a license plate, because nearly all bikes have a serial number, which is effectively the same as a VIN. Legally speaking, generally, most states will consider a vehicle that can exceed 20 mph with throttle only operation a moped. The licensing and education required differ state by state for operating a moped. In Michigan, a person can operate a moped with a 'moped' license, which has fewer restrictions than a full driver's license. So someone can operate a moped at a younger age and with less training. Other states treat mopeds as motorcycles which have more education requirements than to operate a car.
I have had a juice scorpion x for little over a year and it's a good all-around bike I did put some better tires on it because it comes with practically a slicks they're supposed to be road tires but I put better there's no tires on it cuz ride mine year around

I would be interested in your opinion of this ebike. I own it and enjoy it way better than the Fiido D4s, and Fiido L2. The L2 is great though. I bought that bike after one of your reviews. It receives a lot of attention from random people who are walking, biking and even from folks on motorcycles 😁.
Let me just share or remind some of you that 70 - 90’s mopeds did NOT have that fat of tires on them. Believe me I have had many. I have been on bicycles,mopeds & motorcycles all my life and nearing 65. That said Fat tire mopeds DO NOT handle as well as the older style mopeds. At least IMHO, they tend to take more effort to lean and then want to flop.... granted it a learned different ride. And I just SOLD Amy Juiced City Scrambler after a year of ownership. Also found that after starting pedaling was no benefit except on steep hill cause bike can overpower pedal rate. A spoken change may help.
I'm about the same age and experience, my electric is really a small motorcycle, its 20x4 tires and low-mounted battery provide a very low center of gravity, granted I only ride on throttle-alone but on gravel walking trails and the like it tracks like a dream, no skiddishness at-all... 🤗

I'm 6'4" and the Ariel Rider D-Class is great for taller riders. I was wary at first, but after a lot of research I'm satisfied w/ my choice. It is more of a commuter than trying to get exercise.
If I'm only going to use throttle on an ebike with a rear hub motor, it doesn't matter how many speed the bike has. Am I right? Multi speed is for mid motor right?
I wanted to buy one of these mostly for park and beach use. After watching your video I decided not to. They are way too heavy and won't fit in my 4 door sedan, not sure that taking the whole darn thing apart is worth it?
Guys if anyone knows what would be the best in class for this style (mopedish) if you still wanted to also pedal or might need to if your power ran out? My best guess would be the Rad Runner Plus but I'd like to hear any suggestions.

This is true. A full battery provides much greater acceleration and higher top speeds. I keep my battery above 50% at all times.

250w is the limit in Europe. Look up the laws in your country I'm in the US.

I like the utility aspect of the moped style evokes but I'm 6'-6" in height and cannot get one.
I'm 6'4" and the Ariel Rider D-Class is great for taller riders. I was wary at first, but after a lot of research I'm satisfied w/ my choice. It is more of a commuter than trying to get exercise.

If I'm only going to use throttle on an ebike with a rear hub motor, it doesn't matter how many speed the bike has. Am I right? Multi speed is for mid motor right?
I wanted to buy one of these mostly for park and beach use. After watching your video I decided not to. They are way too heavy and won't fit in my 4 door sedan, not sure that taking the whole darn thing apart is worth it?

Does welding in series or in parallel increase the entire pack's discharge rate or is it still the individual cells' discharge maximum?
Parallel with the same unit you have half of the discharge rate. If you put in series you have double voltage but with same capacity
Guys if anyone knows what would be the best in class for this style (mopedish) if you still wanted to also pedal or might need to if your power ran out? My best guess would be the Rad Runner Plus but I'd like to hear any suggestions.
