The New St. Croix BassX - My 24 hour on the Water Review

  • On a scale of 10 - 1 (10 being best and 1 being worse), the BassX is an 8.5. This rod is fantastic for reaction baits and decent for finesse baits. The short handle bodes well for casting and retrieving reaction baits and for Kayak fishermen who desire shorter rod butts. The retrieve is also calibrated to effortlessly retrieve both baits and fish with very little stress on the rod. I hope you enjoy this video and that it is instrumental in helping you with your rod selection.

In a world where every possible species, lure, and technique has its own rod, real, and line combo, I am a fan of multipurpose gear such as this combo. nice review on this one. i am a St Croix fan and have some of their higher end rods. i did purchase the Bass X in a casting version and cant wait to see how this one performs. honestly i stopped buying anything $200+, im not a tournament fisher but i do fish quite a bit here in the Northeast with our short fishing seasons and honestly what changed me was an $80 13 Fishing Blackout that i picked up for fishing the canal systems here in New York . I will not be spending what i used to in the past , honestly there's no need to, speaking for myself only. thank you for a great review on both of the videos on this Bass X

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said. As I have also mentioned in many videos, the quality of fishing rods and reels has progressed so well that there truly is no need to purchase high end equipment in order to do very well in this passion of ours. At $200+ most rods are built for competitive edge rather than just catching fish. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    First time visiting your channel. Great review. Looking around for a graphite rod but haven't found one I like. I use the same FS70 7' medium action fast taper Fenwick rod I bought in 1968. As I remember it was a big purchase back then and top of the line $100. Ha. Big bucks for a 17 year old kid. Thanks.

      Thanks for watching the video and for your kind words. That 1968 Fenwick should be put in a case and mounted on your wall! What was your largest fish on that rod? What did you pair it with? I hop your arsenal has increased since then, LOL. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

      @@familybudgetfisherman I've had a Ryobi MD30 reel on it for many years but I recently paired it with a Shimano Sahara 2500R. The largest I got on the Fenwick was a 5lb+lb bass and a 30" pike. I have all my Garcia Mitchel rods and reels from that time which was my gear until the Fenwick. After I commented I ended up buying a St Croix Bass X 6"8" medium power Extra fast action spinning rod. I really like it. Haven't fished yet. Still cold here in New York but soon.

    I was going to ask if you had to choose either the Omen Black or the Bass-X, which would it be..and you answered it in the video. Well done. I don't think I have held the new version Bass-X yet; my past experience with St. Croix showed them to be rather tip-heavy for my taste. • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad to have answered your question. This rod is alot less tip heavy but it is still there. The issue is where they put the real seat, not the heaviness of the rod blank, wrapping material or finishing. That said it is still a fun rod to throw! Thank you very much! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Saint Croix inventory of rods has a softer tip than what we are used to having from other rod manufacturers. That said, my experience with the rod was a little different. The omen series of rods from 13 fishing are truly a special breed. They are better for jerk bait fishing than the bass X. The Dobbins fury would also be a better choice. However for Finesse Fishing, it is hard to be a Bass X rod. Let me know what your final selection actually is. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I might not recommend the Bass X for a jerk bait rod but it is incredible as a crank bait rod. That softer tip allows for the fish to eat the bait better. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BassX! It is superior to the SLX in every including value. The BassX is lighter, more sensitive, more responsive, and more durable than the SLX. Shimano rod models start to outperform competitors at the Curado model and above. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

      @Family Budget Fisherman what about for casting rods? I've seen a lot of bad reviews for the new bass x casting rods about the reel seat coming detached from the rod but have heard good things about their spinning rods. Do you have a must have casting rod you suggest right around that same price point?

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I am writing this reply, 13 Fishing has a rod called the "blackout". Both the $80 baitcast and spinning rods are on sale for $20 each, on the 13 Fishing website. It is better than the SLX in every technique for bass fishing. Also the Ark Fishing Catalyzer Series Casting Rod is an incredible $60 rod that will beat the SLX in just about every bait presentation. The SLX is a decent rod. However at its pricepoint that are other rods that have more technology invested in them than what shimano has invested in the SLX. I hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    Love the BASS X, but They have give me problems; I feel the reel seat needs a total redesign, or at least the nut. I’ve had 2 spinning rods where the nut can’t fully tighten securely; you snug it down some then it pops and free spins over again. It starts to become an issue during hook sets, especially as a lefty. Then my bass x casting rod had the reel seat nut threads slip off the adhesive. Both are under warranty claims with new ones being shipping probably in a couple of weeks… having had the similar issues with 3 Bass X’s i feel they just need to look into a new reel seat but system all together. At least for the spinning rods; the casting may have been an isolated incident. But it pains me when my cheaper kastking perigee has a reel seat that feels 10x more secure. I will say… if I didn’t love these rods I would have bought 3 of them despite this though.
    I’ve been looking into the 13 fishing omen black 3, dobins fury, googan go-to gold, or fenwick HMG as possible replacements. If the fenwick HMG had a split grip option in their freshwater setup, it probably would’ve been an easy choice. Let me know what you think, I’m also curious if you’ve had this same issue at all. I have that same abu Garcia Revo x on my spinning.

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the first I have heard of this issue. I agree with you that is sounds like a design flaw. I am going to take mine out to see if I can recreate the issue that you describe. @@familybudgetfisherman as an update, St. Croix has shown solid customer service. I was told there was a known issue with certain batch numbers that was addressed; any claims for those particular are fully exchanged for a new rod, free shipping. With the spinning Rod, I can’t tell 100% but I believe that the locking nut cracked; even a hairline crack, preventing it from snugging down securely. On my spinning rods, I’ve moved over to mojo bass to try them - St.Croix offers upgrades if so desired during a warranty claim; being a lefty the collar seems a better design to avoid loosening it by accident under a hook set. I will say, I’ve found that newer bass X’s don’t seem to have this issue. But for anyone buying one, I would strongly advise to ask if you can snug down a reel they may have laying around just to double check that it doesn’t have this issue.. I will continue to but St. Croix though bc their customer service has been excellent; that is a huge priority in my choices of gear. I look forward to comparing the mojo bass to the bass x.
