I would use fluorocarbon since both braid and monofilament float. You can also tie a long fluorocarbon leader to some braid if you want a little more sensitivity. Which would also give you a little more stretch since braid does not stretch at all.

I guess it depends on the size tarpon you plan on catching? But I would go heavier for them if you plan on catching decent sized poons
For canal tarpon yea, you get into those surf Tarpon they will tear you apart, unless you have a reel preferably a 4000 size with a super smooth drag
