Geez, over the years I'd come to the conclusion that nobody in the world had heard of "Amused to Death" but me. It's a brilliant work. I don't know why you chose this song in particular, but If it spurs you and others on to listening to the whole album then kudos! For great individual songs, I especially like "Perfect Sense" parts 1 & 2, and "The Bravery of being out of Range" but they're all good. For pure storytelling you can't beat "Late Home Tonight" parts 1 & 2.
Hey folks, give this album a listen from beginning to end; you won't regret it!

My dad was a huge Pink Floyd fan, raised me on daily full album listens. Fell asleep on the couch every night listening to the records. In Jr high and high school he was playing Roger Waters solo stuff as well. Suffice it to say I was essentially raised by the ideology of Roger Waters. My dad passed away a while ago, but I still listen to full albums nearly daily. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Gilmour's a great guitarist, no doubt, but he doesn't have the drive and pathos of Water's. When I first heard Dog's of War I thought "oh yeah, he's just doing Water's anti-war thing" but there was no real passion behind it, and that song is godawful lyrically, and to be honest, musically. Gilmour has great solo's but Water's is a far, far superior songwriter overall imo.

I had the DVD of his well-received 'In the Flesh' tour, recorded around 2000 mainly in Portland, Oregon, and this song blew me away. He combined his original post-Floyd work with a number of the band's classics, including 'Brick' I and II and his solo specialties like the haunting 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'. Waters used three guitarists to cover the Gilmour solos, Snowy White, Andy Fairweather-Low and Doyle Bramhall II, also Gilmour Floyd alumnus Jon Carin, and Graham Broad doing a mighty job on drums. Roger's flagging vocal ability was no secret, but he made up for this with great projection on stage, and as always, powerful material, both lyrically and in production and arrangement. Highly recommended if you can get hold of it, also the DVD of The Wall Live in Berlin 1990, with a star-studded cast, most of which is available here on YT.
Favourite lines, among many: 'And a doctor in Manhattan saved a dying man for free - it's a miracle!' And of course the piano lid coming down and breaking Andrew Lloyd Webber's fingers. Can you imagine David writing that?

@@Enrico.Sbardolini Thanks so much for the link, Enrico. It was great to experience that again. I hope Nick and Lex get to it as well. A lot more classic Floyd than I remembered, but not including 'Brick I', I was mistaken. I should also add Jon Carin as a fourth guitarist for his lap slide work. Having the subtitles also helps bring Roger's consistently outstanding lyrics to the fore.

That is arguably his best solo album. I saw him twice in Pink Floyd and 4 times solo, he always put on an incredible show with giant productions and themes....First time solo he had Eric Clapton on lead guitar, was way cool to hear him taking on old Floyd numbers, he was outstanding on Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. The whole first set was Floyd, they had an intermission (as they do at all Floyd and Floyd alumni tours) them came back for a second set of Pros And Cons of Hitchiking. Great show and as always stunning visuals. The next solo show was the In the Flesh Tour, and he did a greatest hits of both Floyd and solo stuff. The 3rd time he did a full Dark Side of the Moon as the centerpiece and the 4th time it was The Wall in its entirety. Roger always had the biggest shows and incredible musicians and special effects like an astronaut or a couple versions of the pig flying around. We were utterly freaked out by the prism with lasers coming out in Dark Side with every color imaginable coming out. I loved his shows for sure, but musicaly speaking, he could not top David Gilmour who I saw twice solo and 4 times with Floyd. Roger would have 2 or even 3 guitarists trying to play what David did by himself. There is no better musician on any instrument that I have seen in my 66 years. Please do some of David's solo stuff sometime, Raise My Rent and Mihalis off his first album are classics. Also off his live Remember That Night, try The video for On An Island with David Crosby and Graham Nash of CSNY Fame on backing vocals. David Gilmour's guitar on that live track is amongst the best he's ever done and even has the others on stage in awe. Please do the video and not just the audio, you will miss out big-time if you do not see the performance. Enjoy! Rock On. 🎸😎

Amused to death sounds more like PF THAN PF after waters , and I’m not saying I don’t like Pink Floyd after waters , I love them too, Gilmour will always be my favorite guitar player forever, but waters”s albums are such an amazing piece of art everyone and this one specially it’s just one of the greatest achievements in music history to me, He’s like understanding the future in 1991 what is happening right now and all the great musicians that recorded with him in the album and the drums with Jeff Porcaro , And jeff beck”s guitar It’s just amazing , oh yes I forgot yes he was having problems with His voice but remember by that time he was the one in the group and i mean Pink Floyd Who was always screaming with the songs from Darkside of the moon till the final coat and if you listen to his two first solo albums he keeps screaming a lot and he used to smoke a lot , After that album he Stopped smoking, And I saw him a lot live And he is singing much better even nowadays, He just needed to rest for a while and quit smoking now he sings much better but he’s almost 80 now, and he can do things that he couldn’t add that album even though if you listen to other sons he keeps screaming depending on the song but I think he’s OK we have singers that The voice is like that from the beginning of their career like dylan .

When you go to a Roger Waters concert it's like convening for a mass meeting of some club you didn't even know you were in, until the show starts and you realize that you share a huge amount of your openminded, accepting and compassionate worldview with virtually everyone around you. I love how his pieces are like operas with the libretto's removed. And how, in this one, he sneaks an insult to Andrew Lloyd Webber, who gave the world Cats. o.0

I've never heard this as a stand alone track. It's pretty much near the end of the album, so you are already in the zone when it comes. The verse about Andrew Lloyd Webber at the piano cracked me up first time I heard it, ...so funny. There is so much to take in and Lex is right. You need to chill out uninterrupted on headphones and play it all. Your reaction as a single track never occurred to me but you are right. It's the same with Pro's & Con's of Hitchhiking. So happy you are reacting to some Roger Waters. Was a big Waters fan before I got into Floyd in earnest. My late brother loved him some Radio Kaos. Amused to Death by the way came out during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Unfortunately network news has since gotten much worse in reporting the the realities of war since then. The favorite by far of mine and my daughter is the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. The inflections in Waters' voice in all three of these works are heart wrenching, but must be listened to in entirety to get. Actually the voices at the end of Miracle reminded me of Friends of Mr. Cairo by Vangelis and Jon Anderson. If you like old time movie stars, special sound effects, Jon on top of his game, and Sheherezade tales and likened music it would be a fun song for you two to review.

      The best esecution of
the core tracks of Amused to Death are great in performing live on the 2000 "In The Flesh" tour. John Carin (who has always played live with both David Ghilmour and Roger Wa) it gives the keyboards such an imprint that it seems to hear Rick Wright so much the sound is more PF ... but also everything else Roger has improved a lot by choosing lesser known names for that tour than those who contributed to the original, but "much more productive" (drums in primis).

the Lloyd Weber reference is because Roger and Floyd believed Lloyd Weber stole a theme from Floyd's Echoes for use in Phantom of the Opera Yes People don't like Roger these days cause he has the guts to stand up for the Palestinian people You don't have to be political...just be aware This species has Amused Itself to Death

In case you’re wondering - Waters’ antipathy towards Andrew Lloyd Webber springs from his claim that Webber took the basic chromatic run in Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” and used it in the main theme to the Phantom of the Opera. You can certainly hear the resemblance but in fairness to Webber, chromatic runs like that are fairly common in rock music.
My suggestion for a “reaction” … When Opposites Meet by a UK band called Sky (from the album of the same name).

It's a shame you two haven't done "What God Wants" parts 1,2, and 3. Those pieces are what the album is about. Roger concepted this album to address the issue of President Bush got on stage with a national Preacher Billy Graham telling the US people that God wants us to go to war in the middle east. And then it was desert storm.
It basically points out the hipocrisy of it all.. A few lyrics..
" God wants peace, God wants war, God wants famine, God wants chain stores"..." God wants sedition, God wants sex, God wants freedom. God wants semtex."

As great as Roger Waters is he's pretty much a one-trick pony it's depression in the war and evil incorporations it's all negative sometimes that can come off in a wonderful way but it's usually the music that makes the song not the lyrics because the music supports the lyrics it's the groove baby

I know this is unpopular opinion, but even though I like and enjoy this album as a whole, I feel he gets a bit too preachy. He started with The Wall, then continued on The Final Cut and then solo became really strong for me, so much that it takes away from the musical part. I dislike his general attitude as he got older. Have read tons of things about Pink Floyd's history and he was always really hard to work with, but also he's really hateful in my opinion, he always has to come out and say how trash other people's work is, and that I don't like.
