3:19 there's also the fact that the "monster" videogame genre already existed prior to both Pokemon and Digimon; Dragon Quest and Shin Megami Tensei are considered to be the pioneers of the genre, they both included the possibility of capture the creatures you encounter in order to use them in battle. Pokemon's creator Satoshi Tajiri along with collecting bugs, was also a huge fan of Dragon Quest; and Digimon's creature designer Kenji Watanabe, mentioned that Shin Megami Tensei was one of his biggest inspirations.
Also in the show Ultraseven, an Ultraman sequel that came out in the 60s, the main character frequently summoned kaiju out of small capsules that he carried around.
I used to really dislike the brick wall design, but lately it has grown on me. I got a blue version 20th English version during quarantine, in order to pass the time.
Yeah I picked up the Digimon again also due to the quarantine. Learner about them, researched them, and bought them about a week before shutdown. I later spent a ton of $ to pick up the pendulums. I always prefered the pendulum look and function. But I really love both now
@@samtheweebo I see. I also preferred the look of the Pendulums, but unfortunately I have not lived in Japan for a very long time (since I was less than 4 years old) and it is expensive to buy Japanese toys from America. So, I had to take advantage of the affordable price of the English version 20th. ^^;
@@samtheweebo Yes, I hope so too. The English version 20th was cheap for me, but even though it was the cheapest option, my friend in Germany still had to pay a lot for shipping.
I find it interesting how they changed with effort values with playing and happiness. in the anime it was usually based on how you treated your digimon weather it was from giving them high amount of attention or low amount of attention. did they decide that happiness and strength was a bit too complicated and changed it so the V pet mechanics were just a little simpler for the people?
I think Kenji Watanabe also cited the Megami Tensei franchise as an influence. Pokèmon was also pretty clearly inspired by MegaTen, so that's another link. Megami Tensei is the franchise Persona is a spinoff of. Edit: both also take inspiration from tokusatsu. Mostly the Godzilla and Ultraman franchises, especially Ultra Seven's capsule kaiju.
excelent video, rewatching it after you mention it on your last video, something I would have loved to watch is the different colors (pictures or photos from the internet) that were realised like they show them in the artbook of the v-pet 20th
While I'm not planning on showing off every shell, I'll at least continue to show off the different versions. That being said! If you are interested in the various shells, definitely check out this site: lostintranslationmon.com/project-digishell/. She's been trying to collect images of all the shell variants she can.
The show is what I knew Digimon as. And as a kid, I thought "Digimon could use digivices like Tamagotchi". Kept thinking that until a month ago when I learned about the v-pets
When I was a kid, it was definitely more girls who had Tamagochi. At least no boy I ever knew had one. It wasn't that we wouldn't have enjoyed it, it's that boys at that age just didn't really do what was done way more often by girls. Digimon being a modified Tamagochi marketed to boys totally makes sense to me, and it definitely worked. Even to this day, I'm not sure what I'd do with a v-pet that couldn't battle.
Thank you so much for this! It’s exactly what I was looking for 😃. Bandai just announced wave 3 of the vpets for preorder on Amazon! I couldn’t pass up the glow in the dark one 😆
I would like battles to change into something similar to digimon world championship on the ds. That would be impossible with current devices. So maybe some online/connection features instead?
I never made that connection between Pokémon and Digimon, i always thought Digimon were closer to Kaiju than simple animals like Pokémon are meant to be.
I might be getting the 20th anniversary edition for Christmas (it will be my first ever digimon/Vpet), so I was wondering: are there any major differences between the 20th version and the original? Also, any tips on how to raise Agumon into Greymon? ;)
The differences are huge, but the main things are: - You can choose between different eggs, including all 5 original eggs - You can raise two Digimon at once - You don't need to connect to another device to battle
That is only possible on the Digimon Pendulum Ver.20th, which the guide for that is here: docs.google.com/document/d/1cM4tV4Ra9JsHu5E9cmmoRg8EmAWQJH_6DD99R3Vl_HE/edit?usp=sharing
Legit, there is a version that is so notoriously hard to raise most people can't manage to get theirs to teenhood. It's the Tamagotchi Ocean/Umino version

Another fun fact is that Toho lends Kaiju movie sound effects to be used in the Pokemon films

@@imagindevan Yes importing Digimon stuff is super expensive. Really hope more devices are brought into the western market!

I got the 20th glow in the dark and the white and black
Love the cultural background additional information. Learned something new about the beetles.

I can't wait to see more of this series 👌
Well your in luck now 😄
I really love Digimon. ❤️ With my V-Pets I feel like I'm a Digimon Tamer 😍

Thanks for making these! Keep it up!
Really enjoying the series, good overview. It's always interesting to see how things progressed for the devices during their development and design.
More digimon content! Yay!
I love the background picture!

Honestly makes me wish i still had my old device. Miss my o.g tyrannomon
It always bothered me that the Koromon sprite didn't show their long ears. Now I guess I know why.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the amazing artwork you've used as a backdrop for this video series?
It was a commission I did from Sinobali!
Just thought of what if they made a switch game that let it be a digivive but used the sprites from next order and cyber sleuth

Digimon are for children, real men raise tamagotchi 😤

Or gay...Tamagotchi is friggin girly...the point of creating Digimon was to appeal to boys.
Lol lies, boys didn't like Tamagotchi that's why they launched Digimon, there was nothing boyish about Tamagotchi.
