    Man, I started watching laptop reviews when I had to buy a laptop in February. I bought a g14 2023 4060 then (for a grand on bestbuy). But didn’t stop watching reviews since then for some reason :) Just Josh, canucks, dave2d, Jarrod (sometimes) and you. Awesome review as usual Josh! I feel the G16 4090 is better than 2023 g14 in almost everything:
    - Thinner laptop
    - Bigger screen while weight increase by only 200 grams !!!
    - Fan noise and thermals
    - Better battery
    - Oled screen
    - Better chasis and design
    - Larger touchpad
    the 2023 is better for the RAM and a negligible fraction of FPS, and smaller chassis in XY dimensions naturally.
    I feel kinda bad I didn't wait for the 2024 G16.

    I am stuck between G16 and the strix scar 16 2024 model in terms of display, The new scar has over 2000 dimming zones.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah that's a tough one! Those are two VERY different laptops in terms of performance and thickness/battery. The mini-LED will of course be brighter and I've heard the 2,000 dimming zones has made blooming even more hard to notice. Some people have told me they don't really see it at all. So for brightness the Scar wins. The OLED will still always have more "perfect" contrast in comparison, but just won't be nearly as bright. And of course the G16 is a much thinner and lighter laptop with good battery life, while the Scar is a thicc powerhouse with lower battery life.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If it has better battery life then it may be worthwhile, or significantly improved performance. I personally think it'll be maybe 10-15% more powerful than the Intel Core Ultra and I'm not sure how it's going to do with battery life. It might even be worse with it having more cores now, but we'll see! It's supposed to release around July 15th.

    Hi
    Great review. But I'm sensitive to screen flicker. I've heard the OLED has PWM under 60%.
    But uses DC dimming above 60%. I'm unfamiliar with that technology, could you plesase explain, it would be a big help.
    Thank you

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh shoot I keep forgetting to mention DC dimming. Thanks to G-Helper, you can use DC dimming all the way to 0%! It uses software brightness/gamma settings to reduce the brightness of the display instead of relying on PWM. So the only downside is that below 60% you might not get the most "accurate" gamma, but the tradeoff is probably worth it to not experience PWM.

    I would recommend that anyone looking to buy one go to a store and get some hands on time. I was convinced I'd want one (Zeph G16) from all the reviews, however, I found the build quality, the touch and feel of the device very 'consumer grade', if I can put it that way. Coming from a Dell Precision 7740 and a Surface 5 Pro, I found it very cheap feeling compared to those, let alone a Macbook. Not saying its a technically bad device, but it doesn't feel as premium as it looks in the review videos. Maybe that's not important to you at that price point, but for some it is, so do yourself a favour and go have a look in person 🙂

      @@directorz236 I think as long as you take precautions for basic OLED care then you can probably go through the whole life of the laptop without experiencing burn-in. What about quality control issues? Some reviewers pointed out wobbly touchpad with unsatisfying clicks on G16.

      In this display's case the efective resolution we are getting is 1440x900 but multiplied by 2=2880*1800...this achieves perfect scaling without blurring/missing pixel edges,kinda like how apple does to it's retina displays. It's much more clearer than fractional scaling. We can always play in lower resolution to increase FPS,but this is just more important for productivity apps.

      Sort of a tough one to answer cause it's hard to give a "one-size-fits-all" profile for those, but I definitely suggest watching my G-Helper video to get a better understanding! However this is my basic suggestion, at least a starting point.
      1. Battery saving:
      - Silent/Eco mode
      - CPU boost disabled
      - 60Hz
      - Brightness below half, keyboard lights off or low
      - Leave CPU power limits checkbox UNCHECKED
      - Leave fan checkbox UNCHECKED
      on GPU tab, move GPU power slider and dynamic boost slider all the way down. Overclock set to 0 on both.
      - Advanced tab - set an undervolt of around -15.
      2. Max Performance
      - Start with Turbo and make a new profile
      - Leave CPU power limits checkbox UNCHECKED (unless you have a desired CPU level to reach)
      - Check fans checkbox and set fans to max or a little higher than the stock turbo mode
      - GPU tab: set overclock to +150 / +200
      - Slide GPU power tab and dynamic boost all the way right
      - Advanced tab - set undervolt of -15 again, or -20 and beyond if things don't crash
      Don't touch core clock limit or temp limit unless you know what you're doing it for. Most people don't need to touch the CPU sliders either unless again you know what you're doing it for. I see a lot of people mess up a lot by clicking that "apply power limits" checkbox without knowing why they did it. Hope this helps!

    I was strongly considering the Yoga Pro 9i before, but after seeing so many reports and real-life reviews stating its battery life still leaves much to be desired with the same specs, I started to strongly consider something else. I haven't had a gaming laptop since an MSI GS with a 970 back in the day, and am still leery about OLED, but I think this laptop will really fit all of my needs: battery life for schooling, multi-tasking specs for how I use computers, and gaming specs for on-the-go gaming (and as a temporary stand-in if my desktop keels over before I can build a new one.)
    I do wish it was able to be optioned up to 64GB of RAM since it's soldered, it's quite odd that they aren't able to offer that when others of the same size can, and hiding 32GB behind an upgraded GPU many may not want is not the play (that's more of a Razer or Apple thing to do.)

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's a very Razer/Apple move to make people upgrade their GPU to get more RAM. And I love that they only did it in some regions like the US. Unless you're cool with waiting for the AMD model to release in a couple weeks. But yeah I'm glad someone understands my sentiment with the Yoga. I was even strongly considering it for myself until I did (way too much) research on what actual users were experiencing and saw the same stuff. Even chatted with a couple owners who ended up returning theirs. It's just really hard to beat the G16 right now. One thing I recommend is sticking to the Asus-provided drivers, at least for the Intel graphics for best battery life. Newer drivers seem to all affect battery in some way.

    • @sjewkes1
      @sjewkes1 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @JoshCravesTech I'll be honest, the AMD model G16 draws no interest for me. I'm honestly not even happy to be getting the Core Ultra chips with their NPUs, but at least they're not completely all in on AI/Co-Pilot Recall BS yet, unlike the AMD AI 9 HX 370 almost certainly will be. It's the same reason I have absolutely 0 personal interest in buying any of the new SnapDragon Elite X laptops and their Microsoft-sponsored spyware. They could be absolutely perfect laptops in every way for my needs and I still wouldn't.
      I was excited for the new Yoga, which did make some much needed improvements in terms of the port selection (last years Slim Pro 9i 16" was a joke, considering the 14" had better ports, which is why they killed it off), but has been a disappointment otherwise. It has a great screen and webcam, but nothing else really on offer. As expensive as the G16 will be here in Canada, if it fits almost all of my checkboxes, it's worth the cost.

    • @JoshCravesTech

      @@sjewkes1 Yeah this AI marketing fluff is getting out of hand, lol. I'm also not super interested in the AMD model. @@JoshCravesTechIt is deeply concerning how much of it is making its way into desktop hardware as well, but we'll have to see how long that bid lasts given the average users feelings on or usage of AI.
      I'm honestly shocked with how well-rounded the Intel version is, given how badly Intel has been doing in the last 10 years, but their Core Ultra lineup is surprisingly competent thus far for laptops. I'll probably end up snagging an AMD model of something smaller with mini-LED for maximum portability, longevity, and battery life as a travel device, but based on reviews the G16 is shaping up to be what I'd hoped the Yoga was, albeit with an OLED. Its webcam and screen brightness seem to leave something to be desired but these are minor items really.

    Intel tweaked the idle and light power consumption on the new chips. It can last longer than older gens at very light tasks ... But that's efficiency under only one workload and doesn't speak to efficiency as a whole. I've benchmarked both of these units extensively and Intel performance falls off a cliff below 20w. We found the AMD chips have more low power performance when on battery. This means that as you do more complex tasks than just watching a TH-cam video, you'll see the Intel needing more power to accomplish the same task. Also, the G16 has a larger battery ... So the fact that it has the same battery life as the smaller unit, even in your very light test, indicates it needs more juice, even if some of that is the larger panel (but lower res).

      The Intel CPU is not power hungry. Remember that simply even checking the "apply power limits" or "apply fans" checkbox in G-Helper will decrease battery life because now the laptop reads it as Manual mode. So you just want Silent/Eco, 60Hz, brightness below half, keyboard lights off or low, checkboxes UNCHECKED. Everything else doesn't really need to be touched. Disable most/all startup tasks, disable Asus services in G-Helper, disable any other unnecessary services, and maybe try using the Asus-provided Intel drivers or some other ones. The Intel driver versions seem to have an effect on battery life.

      Is there any difference between drivers? Have you tried newer AMD drivers? Newer Nvidia drivers? Did you disable CPU turbo boost? Fortnite can be pretty CPU heavy. Try to use G-Helper to push your CPU further and undervolt it.

      I am hesitant between the white version and the black version of the G14 2024 ..
      I read some people’s comments on Reddit in which they mentioned that the white version became bad over time because the color of the white version changed and It became yellow, and some of them mentioned that the letters and numbers on the keyboard in the white version are less clear compared to the black version, and that the buttons on the keyboard in the white version get dirty quickly compared to the black version ..
      As a user of the white version of the G14 for a long time,
      what do you think of the above-mentioned words about The white version is it true or not ?
      Do you advise me to buy the white version ?
      because I intended to buy it
      but changed my mind after reading what was written about it and decided to buy the black version.@@JoshCravesTech

      @@abdullah7_rz Yes if your hands sweat easily or they aren't clean then it will leave some stains over time. I use 70% isopropyl alcohol mixed with water and lightly wipe the keyboard deck of my G14 every month or so and it looks new still, even after more than a year of using it almost every day. However, if you want to play it safe I absolutely don't blame you for going with the gray one.

    I really hope Asus sends the 2024 G14 chassis back to the gym for 2025 so we get the premium new design AND the decent thermal headroom from the 2023 vapour chamber. The OLED display is wasted on the slower GPUs. The obsession with thickness hurt the laptop too much IMO.

  • @JT11111
    @JT11111 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    G16 is good, but unless you spend an absurd amount and get a 4090rtx and essentially get ripped off, youre way better off the Legion 7i (not the pro) or Yoga 9i as its far more upgradable up to 64gb+ of ram and 8TB SSD and upgradable Wifi card for less than half the price of the G16 4090rtx. For that price you can also get a specced up Macbook Pro M3 and when it comes out...M4
    Until Asus SIGNIFICANTLY reduce their prices, these laptops will not be competitive in the market in which Lenovo just dominates

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@JT11111 the Legion 7i is the same price, or a little more here in the U.S. and has worse battery life, is heavier and thicker, worse speakers, worse display, and cpu runs hotter without hardly any more performance. Same with the Yoga. The Yoga Pro 9i hardly has any power customization, battery discharges when gaming, doesn’t have HDMI 2.1, display is unnecessarily high resolution, has pretty weirdly tuned power profiles, only goes up to 4070c and a lot more cons if you watch my full G16 review at the end that I cover.
      I get if upgradeability is your main concern but if you’re fine with the ram and SSD options that it comes with then the G16 is a much better buy for a more balanced package. You don’t have to get the 4090 model. The 4080 is also a good option. Or even the 4070 AMD model with 32GB RAM.

      @@JoshCravesTech Thats an absurd thing you just replied with, I cant believe that, here we go:
      In the US: G16 $3000 vs Legion 7i $2000
      In the UK: G16 £4000 vs Legion 7i £1800
      Only someone thats been sponsored or paid by ASUS would reply with something this outlandish, not to mention every other point you said for things such as "CPU is a little more powerful" which is untrue as it tis MUCH, MUCH more powerful than the one on G16 and Yoga 9i, but there is no need to address those points as the first thing you wrote is just ridiculous.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@JT11111 huh??? The 4070 G16 is $2000 in the U.S. and it was just on sale for $1699 like last week. The UK prices are crazy though. I would absolutely recommend the Legion in the UK unless you really wanted the luxury features on the G16.
      The “sponsored” comment is completely uncalled for though. I spend dozens of hours of my time testing and researching these laptops so that I can provide the most accurate information possible.
      And again that is incorrect about the CPU. It typically scores a little over 20k in Cinebench R23 while the Intel Core Ultra 9 scores about 20k. Yes in a single run that 14900HX CPU is actually crazy and can score over 30k, but it just doesn’t hit the power limits necessary in the Legion 7i’s chassis to sustain that at all. Cinebench scores seem to drop up to about 10k once it’s in a sustained performance level. Jarrod’s Tech and other users have also pointed out that the battery discharges while gaming. The display options in the U.S. are also a bit weird. Nowhere near on par with the G16’s unless you get the mini-LED model, but even that one is stuck with a 3.2k display which has no real benefit in a 16” laptop and will decrease fps drastically if you’re gaming.
      The pros of the Legion 7i is that it has 140W PD, more ports, that CPU which in short bursts is very powerful, and per-key RGB keyboard. But it’s almost a whole pound heavier, bigger, thicker, the 14900HX is terrible for battery life (same with the 14700HX), lower color gamut display depending on which one you get, worse speakers, CPU hits 100C+ in some games/loads as shown in some reviews like Tech Guy Beau, higher fan noise in Turbo (51+ dB) with CPU running at 60W, but on an HX CPU that’s the equivalent of like 35/40W on the Intel Core Ultra since it’s not super efficient, slower response times, no Windows Hello, and much less customization over your power limits, fans, and thermals. Honestly they’re just very different laptops and I’m not trying to attack you or anything. This is not a personal matter, I’m just giving comparisons. There is absolutely still a market for the Legion for those who don’t mind the trade offs, and for some people it definitely is the better option.

      @@JoshCravesTech come one man, I specifically said that in order to get the best laptop out of these 3 you would need the 4090rtx which is absurdly expensive as i showed.
      You will get the same performance on the g16 4080rtx as you will on Legion 7i 4070, since my comment on your G16 review, I tried G16 4080, Legion 7i and Yoga 9i, and i can comfortably say that because of how loud the G16 is, because of the so called great battery life not being anything crazy and getting beaten by the Yoga 9i, no one should get anywhere near the 4070 version and anyone who wants to spend macbook money on a windows laptop should get the 4090, not mention theres people upgrading the 7i to a 96gb ram and so on which only adds to a laptops longevity, there has to be a hard line drawn on how much is acceptable for a windows laptop, and no one should be ripped off by the asus pricing given how competitive Lenovo products are.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@JT11111 that makes absolutely no sense. Like not even a little bit. The 4070 G16 performs the same as the 4070 Legion. The 4080 gives like 30-40% more performance than the 4070. You’re comparing two completely different GPUs. I have consulted with many G16 owners, from 4060 to 4090. Basically everyone can achieve at least 9 hours of battery life, even up to 12-13 hours doing basic tasks so I don’t know what to tell you. The Yoga for some reason cannot get as high of battery life (I believe this is due to Lenovo’s factory tuning), plus it has a lot of tradeoffs as well. The Legion of course doesn’t even come close in battery.
      Like I said, if upgradability is a major priority for you then definitely go with the Legion. I’m not arguing against that, lol. I’m just saying that doesn’t automatically make it a “better” laptop. Just better for people who need that.
