I bought my 2012 Lexus IS 350 in the same week that a friend bought his 2013 BMW M3. My car has a little over 145k miles on it, and his has about the same. My Lexus has never seen the inside of a shop outside of routine maintenance, whereas his M3 is always being worked on. In conclusion, I’ll stick with Lexus. Reliability for the win!

I think most buy bmws and can’t afford maintenance then it break down on them. I’m not a mechanic but never took a single bmw to a shop, except for tires and alignment, for 15 years. I work on my cars, bmw can be as reliable as Lexus if you refresh cooling system and fix oil leaks very 80k-100k miles. They are such a joy to drive if your enthusiast. If you want cat with almost no maintenance just get an EV. I’ve had both but I enjoy working on my cars and sound of inline six is a treat.

The MB was costing me on average $1000/year to maintain, and several issues like tilt steering wheel motor and infotainment control knob I just lived with because of high repair costs. I haven't had a single switchgear problem or anything other than routine maintenance with the Lexus. Service costs and insurance are much cheaper than the MB too.

BMW would be up there with Lexus for reliability if they wanted to, all they'd have to do is use better quality components under the hood (less plastic fittings, etc like you said) but a sizable portion of their business model seems to be taking their customers to the cleaners for service and maintenance costs at the dealerships and making the cars more mechanically robust would eat into that revenue stream big time.

True, BMW should design important parts made of metal or alloys to achieve toughness, durability and reliability.
BMW should get rid of their poor quality Plastic suppliers totally that is damaging BMW brand image .
Looks at German cars using lots of crappy plastic parts example water pump and others . These German cars like VW ,Audi uses lots of plastic parts that cracks after short few years of usage without notice . VW and Audi brands reliability image were totally destroyed by their own plastic parts suppliers .
Lexus is still not the prefer choice of most buyers even it says it is reliable but not durable and but definitely not robust.
Lexus always make boring car and remained not the preferred choice of luxury brands buyers . Lexus is struggling with luxury brand image till today since the brand started in 1980. Lexus is just a 40 years history ( short ) brand compare to BMW, Mercedes,Audi ,and Volvo
It will take Lexus another 30 years again before every can accept it as the number one luxury brand provided Lexus still exist in making good reliable and good quality car by then .
Nowadays,Technology rules not good reliability rules.
Toyota technogy is always one step backward most of the time .
Anyone wanted a ten years old technology can buy a Lexus simply because it is very cheap Nowadays irrespective of resale value.
Buy it,Used it and scrap it after that,. .. no problem and nothing to shout about Lexus .

That would be top secret military tech. I agree that durability is by design. Lexus and Mercedes are both the most aerodynamic and sleek cars as well as ample luxury and power. Most manufacturers know the customers and market better than any of us. They spend millions studying market wants and their competition. Manufacturers know that they don't and can't do absolutely everything.

But one thing for American brands from GM, Ford and even Sellantis can produce tougher and stronger than any Toyota or Lexus , do you agree
Japanese is selling on reliability but not on durability, toughness , strong body and robustness .

after owning a few bmw's, i am one hundred percent convinced that they built them to break down on purpose so that you either pay the dealer a hefty price tag to fix it or that you are forced to buy another one. they know the majority of their customers are brainwashed by the brand so they do this to make as much profit as possible.

I have had a BMW 750IL and it was great but only had it for a short time with the only problem being a burst radiator hose. Not really a BMW issue as hoses age and break in any car. I just purchased an old 2007 SC430 Lexus and so far happy days. The 4.3 V8 normally aspirated engine is so smooth you would think it was an electric motor. The LC500 is next level above all cars and will be a future classic like no other. Lexus reliability and quality will always win in the end. Great review, well done.

After reading the comments, I guess the target audience for Lexus is the uninformed buyer who is relying on quality ratings from 10-20 years ago. Back then I would’ve gotten a Lexus, but in 2024 you’re paying a 40% premium for the badge that you could buy on Amazon for 5$. They’re so expensive that even if someone “thinks” they’re better quality, you’re spending so much more for less that you would be able to fix the bmw or Audi with the left over money you saved not buying the Lexus and still have money left over. Truth is if they tried to build a car as complex as BMW, their results would be embarrassing. It’s apples to oranges.

I think f30 bmw later models 2014-16 with N55 or B58 are the most reliable bmws in recent years. They are bargain for what you get, the key is find one that was well maintained. I think there is reason why 335i/340i worth so much more than 328i, n55/b58 far more reliable than n20. Because 335i is more reliable than 328i. 2014-15 335i m sport worth $22-29k vs $22-32k 2014-15 Lexus is350, all 50-80k miles. 328i bmw of the same year is significantly less because early models had issues with timing belt, which was fixed free under warranty. In California it’s good for 10yr/150k miles. I think newer generation bmws with inline six are holding their value better. I’ve seen late model n55 with over 250k miles still running fine. BMW knows how to make a good in-line six so I only stick to those.

Got to this video by curiosity, was looking why 10 year old Lexus LX cost 50-100% more than competitors. I cannot simply justify the price difference just by reliability. Yes, all cars have their flaws. I used to have 325i e90 manual, had it for almost 14 years, I did all maintenance and repairs myself (I’m an accountant by profession), I had to buy tools for each job I performed on a car ( the cheapest way for diy) I had to replace oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, water pump, windshield fluid tank, oil pan gasket, engine mounts, front and rear shocks, 3 window regulators, reupholstered headliner( the worst job ever lol), passenger side door inside weather strips due to leaks, starter. Luckily I always had another car Honda Civic while owning bmw. During the 14 years owning civic I replaced cylinder cover gasket and CV boot. While the Civic was the most reliable car, all my good memories go for BMW. I really enjoyed the experience owning bmw, the skill set I gained worth much more than 50% markup for Lexus. However, I agree, if a person needs only one car in their life, and does not want to learn how to work on a car, hands down, you must go for Honda or Toyota. In my case, I will always have both bmw or Audi and Japanese brand, just because there is no automakers that were able to figure out how to put all components together in one car that are matters to me ( reliability, fun to drive, fuel efficient within 55 mpg, big SUV, luxury, and the price that does not cost a half of the 2/2 condo).

Those are all very valid points and everyone has their own risk tolerance which we can accept a few issues along the way. Some people it’s a big deal and others not so much. There are honestly many cars out there that lose a ton more value after 5 years but may be qualitatively 95 percent as reliable

A 2020 Corolla and a 2017 Highlander we bought new. We just picked up a third vehicle as we have a new driver in the house and it’s an 2013 X5 diesel. There is no comparable Toyota or Lexus For this I know of. Will see how it treats us. But yes, the BMWs are more maintenance heavy for sure. I’ve owned a few, but have yet to be stranded. See if we end up keeping the X5 or if I tire of working on it. Our Highlander is at 100,000km so will need some minor maintenance. My suggestion to people who don’t enjoy working on and tinkering with their vehicles would be to buy a Toyota or Lexus.

You are spot-on about more plastic engine (BMW) versus more metal engine (Toyota). And BMWs run at 230 degrees, way above the boiling point of water. Toyotas run 40 degrees cooler.
My BMWs plastic plumbing is shot. So the car is shot. It’s isn’t just lines and hoses, it’s everything, like the intake manifold.
Even the thermostat housing is (now completely disintegrated) plastic. I was fixing my classic broken plastic coolant return line failure that runs above the radiator, it breaks on all BMWs and pumps all of your coolant overboard often catastrophically failing the engine. When I moved the rubberish feed hose from the thin plastic engine failure initiator, it sloughed the plastic nipple off the plastic thermostat housing. Since my 2011 is worth about $2500 (in perfect cosmetic shape, even in todays market) after a $46,000 purchase price plus over $60,000 in repair work, I fixed the thermostat housing by wrapping it with high temp JB Weld reinforced with several yards of epoxy infused sewing thread.
That might sound sketchy, but it’s 100x stronger, now.

Try buying a 21 year old BMW 3 series versus a 21 year old Lexus IS200 and see if a comparison is needed, Buying a new BMW is like having a girlfriend that you will never marry it was good while it lasted and the relationship is terminated due to non compatibility. Buying a Lexus is like meeting your soul mate and growing old with her have many grandchildren the end.

As much as I like the Lexus why the hell haven't they ever built a Station Wagon! That's where BMW have them.

That’s a great question David, but I believe the Europeans took the concept and ran with it. Look at Audi Avante cars or the Benz E class wagon s or BMWs, or VW etc. not so much in other parts of the globe.

I’ve had 3 BMWs and 1 Mazda and while the BMWs were more fun to drive I have much more luxury features for less money in the Mazda, I never worry about it breaking down, it just works. No weird warning lights or fault codes.

While BMW focuses on "breaking my wallet" with innovation, Lexus' focus is on "kaizen" which is continuous improvement to make what has already been done better.
