  • On this episode of Make It Kustom, I am working on the 1931 Model A roadster floor. I’m also fabricating a seat frame so that I know where to weld in my threaded inserts in the floor braces before spot welding the bead rolled floor panels down. I also talk about my process for spot welding with a TIG welder.

      Seriously man, it takes talent and willpower along with knowledge…. I give my professional information away free as well and after 30 years have yet to have a single soul get near my job… if you are afraid that teaching will cost you your job then you aren’t as good as you think, and even if you are there’s plenty to go around, in case you missed it the world is lacking skilled trades as youngsters haven’t learned them in quite a long time now and the old guys are retired or will soon… Teach every young person you can bro, being a master isn’t complete until you have taught a few your trade…. ✌️

      Sharing knowledge is what we need more of. Help each other save the cars. There is no shortage of work in this industry, just a shortage of people with skills, and it is basically impossible to get formal schooling on this.

      Heh, the knowledge is valuable but for better or worse there’s still a ton of work involved. Not to mention I think it might take me a few tries to get the techniques to work like they do in the videos.

What a pro job you can be proud of! The building is more satisfying than the end product ownership, both have their satisfaction, but a Fab dude probably isn't satisfied unless another fulfilling job is planned and taking place.

You will never need a "STORE FRONT" as your work will bring people from everywhere to wherever you are... I was trained through hole welding. I can't remember the hole size but I know it was a heck of a lot larger than 1/8". Probably 3/8". He was so particular that it had to have the little silicon dot right in the middle to pass quality. All on MIG back then. It was valuable training. Screw up and cut clean through a spot weld. Not an issue.

    NICE! Back in my day we didn't have CAD programs or CNC plasma tables. Great music once again. I have found in the past that when one has a plan and attempts to implement it as it was thought and written down, there are always things and ideas that crop up and you go" Hey, that's a great Idea and it would look so cool"! this is where a five hour job turns into a fifty hour job, but it feel good and it feels right. I LOVE Clecos! Without the holes in the braces the Tig will tens to arc in the hole and not touch the brace very much, which will lead to broken welds later on and then you get some nasty road rattle that you have to fix else it drives you crazy. Super job on the welding. I wish I could weld that fast, I might have made some money at this game. Like my old friend Bill used to say, "have a plan, but you can change it as you go, It's an organic process". He would've like you Karl, but he's been gone now these last 6 years.

      Do you use weld through primer?

    • @gregbowen9546
      @gregbowen9546 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably weldable primer or seam seal so no air or moisture can get in between them. That's what I do anyways. That's really the only thing you can do that I know of.

    • @NialPowerCork
      @NialPowerCork 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d be very interested in that question as well. Obviously weld through primer and seam sealer are possible preventative measures but not a perfect solution really. It’d be nice to think there was a way to design out that issue so that it’s a forever job.

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it will be sealed up and I think I will try powder coating everything inside and out before bodywork and paint. I’ve been talking to some shops that do this and swear by it now

    I'd be interested to see a destruction test comparison between your tig plug weld 1/8 with the hole right through and a mig plug weld 8mm hole on the top panel only.

    • @trevorpowell7084
      @trevorpowell7084 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mig is a stronger weld just on a metallurgical level and I would about guarantee a correct ICAR type weld will outperform in a destruction test. This way isn't necessarily wrong (as the floor isn't a fully structural piece) but I'd be curious to see the performance of these welds too

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that would be interesting but unnecessary. If you think about a factory spot weld how tiny they are now think about the tig weld As long as it’s stronger or as strong as a factory spot weld then it is enough. I’m sure a wire feed welder could do an even stronger wild when sent properly but the strength is not in question

    Awesome work as usual. Technology nowadays certainly saves you a lot of time. Back in my days I had to fabricate mostly all by hand and had pretty much all we had was a stick welder, a kerosene flamer and an assortment of soldering irons lol

    Your very skilled who taught you formal education, seminars or working with metal shapers. I know most of it that came from experience. You have a knack most of is you and attention to how the art of metal work can be done. Thank you for sharing

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah most of it came from experience but I did two weekend courses in my life that helped me out. One was Christian Sosa’s metal shaving class and another was Renato Muskovic we can class I took in high school. At that time I didn’t really absorb much but just being exposed to his machinery open my eyes

    Awesome work. 2 things you might want to check is the order you do the welding. I noticed you just started on one side and finished on the other. It is always a good practice to distribute the load you are putting on the metal. It will definately increase your work time on it. second is you need to keep the inert gas on the weld pool longer ager disengaging the torch. It helps cool the weld better and shields it against corrosion.
    In the end it does not really matter as this looks magnificent.

    Hi Karl, I'm a recent subscriber and a fellow TH-camr too. I just wanted to say I really appreciate your channel. I've been working with metal since 1977 and I still love it to this day. Your workmanship is very inspiring. I get a lot out of your tips and methods and will apply a lot of your advice to my projects. Glen Rid at NZ Mopar told me about you and said i would enjoy what you are doing. I'm just wrapping up a '69 Z28 and getting into a 1977 Honda CB750 and a handbuilt T Bucket. Really anjoying your Model A.. Take care!
