Read Lance’s Street Triple RS first-ride article here: rvz.la/35ISpyH
Addendum: Zack said the up-spec RS has Öhlins suspension. What he meant is an Öhlins shock and an upgraded Showa fork. Don't worry, he has been docked a week's pay for his error.

What's cool about the new R models, is that you can unlock the top end power of the RS model, with TuneECU. The new bikes use the same motor, same cam, same fuel and ignition tables, etc... They hold the R's top end power back using restrictions on the ETV(Electronic Throttle Value) tables.
When you twist the throttle to 100%, it gives you 100% but only to 7000rpm... and 7,000rpm the ECU dials it back to 80%, no matter how much you twist the throttle. You can change that in TuneECU and get back that missing power in minutes... Just change those tables to 100% all the way to redline. Instant RS power output. You lose no no end or midrange, and you just gain top end power...
The first gen 765's had different tunes and cam profiles... The 2020+ models have identical motors, and they create different power profiles between the R and RS with ETV values, that you can easily change.

Love the review. I just purchased one of these. I traded in my GSXS S750. Here are my thoughts.
The Good: Plenty of linear torque as compared to my 4 Cylinder GSXS. A decent top end as well.
I love the stock quick shifter. It can be a little clunky between 1st and 2nd tho. Occasionally during downshifts as well.
Comfortable. I purchased the Low version of the bike and I rode it 3.5 hours to home. Stopped for gas once and food once. I then rode another hour to a friend's place after I rested for a bit. And an hour back afterwards.
Light and east to maneuver. It loves to lean, makes you feel very confident in the corners.
I actually like this display with the tachometer more than the current STR's screen. The shift lights really give it some personality.
The bike is good looking. A lot more customization options than my 09 Street Triple I had a while ago. Not as much as a Suzuki, but a comfortable amount.
The Bad. It vibrates more than I thought it would through the handlebars. I'm going to invest in weighted bar ends
The suspension is spectacular, but it needs to be set up properly. A little more time and effort but well worth it. My GSXS was good out of the box, but thats because it was setup generically to fit most people. I believe the previous owner to my STR was about 120lbs.
The mirrors move. I actually like the stock mirrors, I've had bar ends before and I don't like to worry about breaking something squeezing through traffic or destroying one of the $200 set of mirrors in the parking lot over a simple drop. However, this is a 2021 model. The mirrors shouldn't move so much under acceleration.

This comment is late to the game but I bought a 2019 Striple R as a leftover in December 2020 and just got past the 1000 mile break in. I have seen several reviews of this bike (Tons more of the RS, of course.) I have not really seen it said although there is an undercurrent hinted at how much more power this bike delivers north of 9000 rpm. I was passing a car with the bike in third gear at 45 to 50 mph and it revved out to 90 mph in third to pass (on track of course) what nobody mentions is how this bike goes from fast to INSANELY FAST north of 9000 rpm. I loved it, and now you know, if you didn't already know.

I bought this bike in May 2020. My first time going outside the Japanese brands. If it wasn't for the 2 year warranty, idk if I'd buy a Triumph, especially after being known for having bad quality many years ago. But I was looking for something light and a tiny bit more upright. I have to agree with the comment about the screen on the RS. At least for 2020 models, it was soo hard to see. Tons of people online have the same complaint. Otherwise I would've maybe gotten the RS. However the R didn't come without its own issue. Triumph sold the R with missing rider modes that took months for them to put in. The manual also advertises self-canceling turn signals for the R, but they're never going to that.
Other than that, I find getting into neutral doesn't always work. Or the computer doesn't register it quick enough it and tells you you're in 1st or 2nd, then 2 seconds later says neutral. So, really it seems the R has had software issues since I've owned. Otherwise I really like the light weight, the power and handling. It's like it increases confidence beyond what you thought you were at.
Physical issues I have is handle vibration, such as in the video. I never like to ride on the interstate because of it. And many riders reported no kind of accessories seem to help the issue. My mirrors are completely useless. Also speaking of interstate, I'd recommend getting a windshield. Past 70 or so, I'm feeling pressure on the helmet. I let it rip before on the open road and I felt my already secure helmet start choking me. Just waiting for a windscreen to be available. Also note, no cheaper accessories for this bike yet. They're all on the previous years

A couple notable points of comparison between the 675 and 765 would involve things like the cable vs electronic throttle (as mentioned), seating position change from the model updates (2006-2012, 2013-2016, and the 765 all have different seating position triangles) if only slightly in some instances. The main difference was the change from the 2016 to 2017 where the seat went from the traditional street triple sub frame style to the rx sub-frame style off of the daytona 675r. In the 2013-2016 model years they had a much tighter seat bottom to peg leg range but you sat further down in the bike and in the 2006-2012 range they were exceptionally more roomy while also sitting lower with less peg clearance. The intake whine also changed with the revision from the 675 to 765 substantially, on the 675 engines it sounds much more like a carnal kind of mechanical gear growl that makes itself very present and often overtakes the engine note up until that 6500 RPM sweetspot where the engine roars to life whereas the 765 engines are much more muted with intake whine and sound significantly more like a 4 cylinder down low up until they hit that 6-7000 RPM range. Either way you can't really go wrong with either of the engines, even the much older models had pedigree put into them. I'm biased towards the 675 due to the intake whine it puts out, reminds me of a race car with straight cut gears when I ride around at slow speeds and it's just a really fun little nuance to mess around with. I even took a Dremel tool and opened the intake grate up a bit to let some extra noise out and air in for more noise, the triple whistle lives on.

    • @Lynxtro

Does the 765 have more or less leg room than the 13-16 675?

    • @JK-tu1xx
      @JK-tu1xx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Lynxtro To be honest it's difficult to say definitively, leg room isn't really a measurement and it's all about how long your legs are really. I'm 6'1 and my 675 has plenty of leg room but it's still an aggressive kick back and up so anything over 2 hours and my legs really start to get annoyed. I've been on a 765 and it was pretty comparable, maybe a slightly better knee bend angle due to the additional seat height but the pegs were a bit more canted forward and felt slightly further back due to where I was sitting on the seat.

I got the '19 R that came with the TFT and I agree with Zach, its super easy to use and easy to see. At 5' 10" with a 30" inseam I have no problem flat-footing this bike. I test rode the LRH because I have a short inseam and it felt like I was sitting in the bike instead of on the bike. I opted to add the bar-end mirrors and ditch the bunny ears. Only point where I disagree with Zach is riding mode. I typically leave it in sport. The throttle seems less "twitchy" ironically enough. Other than that, I think he nailed this review.

I agree 100%! I’m the same height and inseam and I went with the LRH version. Mines a 2018 but still the same. We got the good years that still had the TFT and the nice Brembo radial master cylinder. I also installed bar ends. With the factory mirrors I could only see my elbows and the left one, no matter how much I tightened it down, would fold back over 100 and I’d have to straighten it back out after I slowed down again. That was super annoying. I usually stay in rider mode which I have set to all sport settings and TC disabled.

Great review. I thought riding both, that the ‘simpler’ R model had more compliant suspension over the rs which was stiff for riding our less than perfect uk roads. I also prefer the needle Rev counter to tf. What you also get on the 2020 R is an array of blue neons on taco, as a gear change indicator, which you can set to light up at the revs you want. Mines at 9. I also preferred the less cool mirrors, only just wider than the bars. The bar end stick out way to far when filtering and blur more. Fuelling is super smooth compared to some bikes I tried.

But having got into the habit I may have ridden bikes that didn't need it. My 2011 Speed Triple definitely needed it, and a 2008 Aprilia, and I think as far back as an '82 Honda I owned. It's nice to be able to start the bike before finishing getting geared up, though.

Re: whether the ST3 R is too raw for commuting, I can say I spent a year commuting on a 2018 ST3 R~30 miles (45-60 minutes) each way, mix of highway and city streets and rain or shine, and it handled it great. Especially in sport mode the power's there if you ask the bike for it, but it's also totally happy just cruising along.

Definitely will miss the graph. Super useful and gave a better metric of "what's better" as it yielded relative performance still as obviously most expensive bikes will be objectively better. However, to a lot of people "best" still comes down to dollars and cents. I'd consider bringing it back personally.

Sir, the RS stands for 'Refined Sophistication' in the UK, it is sold to ladies and older gentlemen - this is why the exhaust note has the polite sound in the lower rev range. The higher pegs are required for the tighter corners. I have owned a number of these - I preferred the round headlights. Around 12,500 rpm some laws of physics may need redefinition.

RS vs R: Engines are tuned differntly. RS more for track use with higher HP @ higher revs. R more trorque @ lower rpms.
Plus: I'd recommend getting the small "windshield" which Triumph offers as an extra. It's small and doesn't compromise the looks but works very well - remove some wind-pressure. Which is notiveable. I can ride my R quite comfortably up to 120 km/h (~75 mph).
Concerning the TFT: My R is a 2018 modell and the dash is really great. But Triumph changed the graphical design of the dash. From what I've heard, not to the better. Seems to be bloated and not very ergonomic.

I'm a little late to the party, but this bike has really been on my mind lately. I've been hustling a Speed 400 around for a few months, and I love it absolutely. However, I yearn for a little more oomph and ability on the highways and interstates I travel on my 78 mile daily commute. The 400 is capable but after 40 miles my ass hurts, and I feel like I'm ringing the neck of that little 398cc single. The 765 checks almost all of the boxes for features I want for an upgrade. It also looks fantastic, but not as soulful or classy like a T100 or 120. Entirely different bikes obviously. My analog attitudes are clashing mightily with modern esthetics. Because its a Triumph though, I'm inclined to venture into the future. This video absolutely answered all of my questions, and Zach's personal approach as nudged me further off the fence into the saddle of the 21st century. Kudos Daily Rider.

The other reason to get the 765 engine over the 675, is that the new 765 runs cooler, because of a lower compression ratio. I had a 2013 Street Triple S 675, and during a hot day at a stoplight, you would see that temp gauge creep up to 9 clicks. I did like the riding position of the old 675 better though, as you sat more down into the bike, not on top like with the 765.

Not really the s model now is mainly for European A2 license holders as it has a max of 95 hp and can be downgraded to the 48 hp limit for that license. The r still has the same equipment as the old r only not the radial master cylinder and the TFT which is good actually because in my opinion the new TFT is garbage it's cool standing still but terrible to read during riding they should get back to the outgoing TFT style.
Plus the new r also gets the blipper as standard

On bad days we average 35-45 mph which turns my R1 into a midevil torture rack inside of a 250 degree oven! Therefore I'm looking for a real commuter with sporting potential. Great review! I have a 2010 Triumph 675 STR with lots of mods (Arrow 3-1 , Ohlins shock with linear linkage, quickshifter etc) and now with 60000 kms on it just finished complete servicing. Love the new bike but let me tell you that the chrome roundies are way cooler looking when you are sitting on the bike than the new black plastic ones. No need to buy the new bike cos mine has close to 100 hp at the rear wheel and barely weighs 400 lbs gassed up. Still rips on the backroads and the handling is effortless. Those Nissin 4-pot radial brakes will howl the front tire with one finger on the lever.

I have to agree with Symon, the headlight is ugly ! Looking at it head on is ok, but from the side it looks like it's hanging way out too far. It needs to come back more and I think it also needs a short windshield. Even a small 6 to 8 inch, slanted back windshield would make the head light dash assembly look a lot better. Maybe just extend each side to cover the brackets that hold the assembly to the triple tree?
Nice bike. Thanks for the informative well done video.

I haven't ridden a Street Triple R, but I am comfortable with Zach's assessment that you don't need an RS for track days..... that said, my Fiance has an RS and being honest it's soo good that any bike even closely related to it has to be a great bike! I normally ride big bore sport bikes and was already looking at naked bikes when I met her in late 2019. At the time, the Speed Triple was on my short list of bikes I would like to try when shopping for a new bike, then I rode her 765RS and I thought I might hold out for the new bike, what we now know is the Speed Triple 1200 RS. In the last season and I actually considering another 765 RS instead of the 1200. I like liter-bike power, but the RS is almost EVERYTHING I want and need in a bike and none of the range-anxiety I get on my 3 literbikes. One of those bikes hits reserve at 105 miles regularly on our country road loop, this bike will almost do the entire ride on a tank! It also doesn't eat rear tires every 2000 miles.
So, sorry if I can't comment on the 675R, but it would have to be a shit-ton worse than the RS to not be a bike really worth having. The RS is a hell of a lot of motorcycle and I would track day it without reservation. That said, if you can afford the luxury of taking a motorcycle to a racetrack for shits and giggles, you can afford the extra few $$ a month for the RS. You might not appreciate the suspension if you aren't an advanced rider, but you'll notice the lower power-especially up top on the R..... these Triples have great power in the mid-upper-mid range but fall flat when you wind them out. What you'll REALLY notice is the brakes, the Brembos are really good and one-finger trail-braking into corners to scrub off a little speed. I can ride an modern literbike hard enough to flex the frame on roads I know, and I'm being as honest when I say that the 765 RS is as fast as I need a bike to be. It's fucking Fast once you learn to ride it, and I never feel like I'm being held back until the speeds are well over 100mph on longer sweepers and I'm usually ahead of my group that they don't catch up anyway.
You won't go wrong with either bike, but for me it's a "buy-once, cry once" deal-the RS will have better resale anyway. I can't see myself looking at any other bike from Japan in it's class either. Much classier bike and better handling than all of them.
