I happen to have access to the Carson archive (every single Tonight Show w/Johnny!) Interestingly, to my eye, and I might be wrong, THIS video here is on videotape. The version in the Carson archives is an 18 minute compilation of the Hair segments from that show, and it's on color kinescope. In other words, it was filmed in color from a television set. The audio on the one in the archives is inferior. They do the title song, then an interview with the creative team, then Where Do I Go- and suddenly there's a cut, and they jump to The Flesh Failures (Let The Sunshine In) only, it's skipped to the part where they run out into the audience. Very funny to see Gerome Ragni up on all fours on Johnny Carson's desk singing, with Johnny awkwardly clapping along. Thanks for posting this.

@@timemerich I wish I could capture and share, the problem is first, since it's the site they use to licence clips, I really can't. Secondly, this version his a big watermark, which comes off of course if you pay to use it. But, at least you know it's out there!

@cadenjones2536: Although this question has absolutely nothing to do with this "Hair" clip (which is freaking awesome), but if you have access to the Carson archive, do you know if you have either of the two performances of The Honey Cone's appearance on the show in the early 70's?

i certainly will send some your way. i generally try to find Hair videos with Jonathan Kramer in them. he was in Midnight Cowboy and was originally intended to be Frank N. Furter in Rocky Horror.

Wonder why they left out the "Oh say can you see my eyes, then my hair's too short" part? They dfid it on the Smothers Brothers and Dick Cavett Show. Did NBC have a problem with it?

Yes. The Smothers performance, with the flag on the stage floor caused tension between a cameraman and someone in the production, leading to an arm wrestlung match.
