Look how young Tommy Newsome was. This was before Doc’s time. There all gone now, But how FANTASTIC is it to still be able to watch it today.
Before Doc's time as leader, yes, but not before his time in the band. Doc was part of the Tonight Show band in the 50s when Steve Allen hosted the show. Skitch Henderson was the leader until 1966.

You can see Doc in the back, when they show all the drummers, playing his trumpet.
How can you NOT DIG THIS...Pete Fountain is enjoying every second and so is everyone else. It is a Classic! They really swing do they not!

I thought Tommy and one of bone players were the only players from the start of the show who stayed with Johnny until the end? I may be wrong….
He was so young here.

I used to watch Pete Fountain the Tonight Show in the 70s when I was an aspiring clarinet player in the elementary school band. I knew I would never be that good, but what an inspiration.
Tommy Newsom looked the same all his life.
Wonderful. The drums are playing with a real, legit, "street beat" feel that's at the heart of authentic New Orleans jazz; playing right on the drum heads with the snares turned on. The way it oughtta be.
GOOD drummers that are really drummers first and foremost know this. All the others don't.
I remember seeing the "brought to you in living color" and having black and white tv...

As rare as finding this piece from the tonight show is finding Johnny Carson playing the drums on his show
Johnny Carson had the winning formula right from the beginning. "From New York, 'The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson..." became "From Hollywood...and now here's Johnny!" This was entertainment, America's Town Hall convened every weeknight during the famous "Monologue."
And the best thing about it was….no politics at all!
@@ShelleyVideo Johnny made plenty of political jokes. Back in the 60s he would joke about how poorly run NYC was a lot. Mayor Lindsay was the brunt of many monologue jokes.
I appreciate this rendition of "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain" that we used to sing in school as a folk song when I was a kid. The title "Marching Round the Mountain" is new to me.

Johnny Carson was a great drummer & a fabulous magician at that, he started off his career as a magician back in the early 1950's MAY HE R.I.P. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL AMEN. 😇😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Pete Fountain was THE clarinet player of the TV age (I remember the bald Pete and he moves his neck like a chicken) - he was everywhere. And seeing Jack Sperling in his senior years was awesome.
When he had just started shaving his head I was on the New Orleans Police Department and had just started shaving mine also. It was Mardi Gras and as Pete and his group, The Half Fast Marching Band, came down the street with Pete's bald head leading the group I stepped out in front of them and took of my helmet revealing mine. Pete's reaction was to run up to me and kiss me on top of my head. What a thrill.

Johnny used to have Louie Bellson & Buddy on all of the time. He should've added Jack Sperling to that list.

Believe it or not, I'm Pete Fountain's fourth cousin!! I play trumpet but I want to strive to be at his level one day!:)
I played with Pete on stage a number of time in NO and Bay St. Louis. Pete gave me much over 40 years....incl double case and 2 clarinets.......one of which recorded a number of Coral records. I use to play on it sometimes with Pete.....I recog. the serial no. when he gave it to me......cheers. I miss Pete everyday.........

Would love to find the appearances on the Tonight Show of the Harry James band with Buddy Rich from 1965 or James with Louis Bellson in 1966.
This particular show with Pete Fountain was preserved on kinescope/16mm film sent to the troops in Germany in the 60s. It was unearthed a few years ago. And yes wouldn't it be great it the same would happen to the Harry James appearances in '65 & '66.

I think the white-haired drummer is Paul Edwards and Sperling is playing his Rogers kit.
The white-haired drummer is Godfrey Hirsch. Godfrey's first instrument was the vibes, but he doubled on snare for struttin' kind of numbers.
If you have that entire program, a rarity, please send it up. RCA erased all of the tapes or reused them so few if any of the first ten years of the Carson Show exist.

dinkorub I'd have to look at the logs from the Burbank era (1972-92) of Carson's "Tonight" re: Fountain's guest shots, but with the exception of kinescopes like this and super rare original color videotape, all of Carson's New York years (1962-72) were wiped by NBC without Carson's knowledge. I was quite tickled to discover this kinescope clip.
dinkorub I forgot to say in my other reply, but the album "Lawrence Welk Presents Pete Fountain" is available digitally, and used copies of the vinyl record are for sale on Amazon and elsewhere. I'm not certain about a box set.
Yeah, the great Pete was with Welk from 1955 until December 1959. Pete walked out on Welk because he wanted to jive up a Christmas carol, and Welk wouldn't hear of it. As a sidenote, he also lost Alice Lon the Champagne Lady for showing "too much knee" on camera, telling her that "cheesecake does not fit our show." Lon responded by saying "all I did was sit on a desk and cross my legs! That's how a lady sits down!" Enough irate viewer mail persuaded Welk to try to coax Lon back, but her decision was made.

Just curious if Tommy Newsome was with the show from the very beginning. I'm pretty sure Doc was. I don't remember why Skitch Henderson left or how many years into the show it happened. Ed McMahon's intro with heeeers Johnny got noticeably longer over the years. Wish the very first episode existed. I have heard an audio portion of the very first monologue. It was played once on an anniversary show.
Skitch left in 1966, wanted to stay in New York while the show was moving to California.
@@markbuckley8675 No, according to the Carson Podcast, Skitch got a bit too flirtatious with the daughter (or niece, I don't remember which) of an RCA bigwig who in turn told Johnny to get rid of him...or else.

A lot of lefties play righty. In my case, my first drum teacher was an elementary school band director who didn’t know the drums well enough to know that lefties set up differently than righties. I learned how to play like all the other righties in the class. Ringo Starr is a lefty who plays righty, and there are many.
