I was diagnosed with hypertension about 15 years ago. My doctor recommended regular exercise, more dietary fiber through fruits and vegetables, less fried food, a drastic cut in my salt intake. He also put me on a BP medication. A couple weeks later, I felt funny and got nauseous and threw up(very rare for me). I went back to the doctor, and he determined that my blood pressure had dropped too low. He hadn’t expected me to follow every single recommendation, but I did. He decided to take me off the medication and encouraged me to continue the good habits. I’ve been to the doctor several times(checkups and minor things), and every time they say my blood pressure is good. No meds any more. Is that a common thing? I’m very grateful.
I started an exercise program and changed my diet by eliminating pork and beef. Lost 45 pounds and dropped my blood pressure down to the low limit. My doctor said "That is not the problem I wanted to solve". He laughed and said eat more salt and we will check it later. I did have it checked later and I was back to normal.
You forgot to mention Alchohol., stopping all booze lowers the BP too. I used to drink a bottle of wine every night after work & my BP was 192. - 90. I take a 5mg pill every day, i have started exercising, lost 64 lbs, stopped smoking 8 months ago, stopped drinking a week ago & my BP is now 124 - 77. Taking better care of yourself works wonders. I feel great. Thanks for sharing & taking the time out of your very busy day to dish out some valuble information us. I hope you will keep these talks coming, most people in Canada don't even have access to a Dr the health sysytem is in such a state !
But drinking wine isn't not taking care of yourself though. I also drink wine nearly every night, over dinner and afterwards and my BP is in the same range and hitting the same lows as when I was 20-25 from giving blood and the readings there. Lows under 110/76, (and down to 104) averages by rough estimates week to week 114/78 or less depending on how it's averaged. If you have weight, fitness, diet, all going for you, wine isn't something you have to or probably want to cut out. The idea is not letting yourself go to pot.
@@hortensejones4050 I'm in the UK. I used the Hairy Bikers diet range of books and adapt recipes to suit me. I treat it with the mindset that I'm not dieting, just making healthy choices. Also lots of walking - so good for body and mind!
I'm an overweight man with a history of blood pressure in my family. As of a few months ago, I got a new doctor who much like you, doesn't lecture and preach like past doctors but instead encourages and offers realistic solutions to help me reduce my weight and lower my blood pressure. Thanks to her, I've lost weight and down from three BP meds to one and hopefully on my way to none. I really appreciate this channel and all you do.
In April '20 my BP was in the high 130s over high 90's. I've lost 70lbs, exercise regularly and I took it yesterday and it was 110/70. It is possible with lifestyle changes!
Not always the case. I lost 50 lbs (217 to 167). Have the world's cleanest diet and run 3 times a week, (have done 20 marathons) but at 70 it is still in the 140'sx85. Have decided to try the meds. Might be age, might be stress so will just try the meds.
I’ve lost 60lbs, never smoked or drank. I exercise at least 4 days a week, walk up to 4 miles a day, stopped eating red meat years ago and follow a mainly vegan diet. Dr visit last month and BP was worse. Another checkup last week, still high. My cholesterol levels have decreased significantly….. it’s discouraging!!

I’m 59 and have always had high blood pressure. I quit smoking 7 yrs ago and lost 50 lbs. I’m on 3 blood pressure meds .and Since I lost the weight my doctor is thinking about taking me off before my blood pressure is too low. Love this channel ♥️
Congrats Cheryl that is an amazing accomplishment. Fingers crossed they can get you down to 2 meds. Then maybe 1! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

I have lost all confidence in the health system here in the US in the last few years so I am thrilled to have a holistic MD now in my small town. High BP runs in my family and mine is elevated. When I saw this video I almost didn't click on it - 3 dudes in scrubs looking like a commercial for the AMA. 😄Boy am I glad I did! Listening to you was like listening to my D.O. back in the 1970's when I was a kid. Honest, open, and especially not poisoned by Big pharma. I sub'd right away and your suggestions are exactly what my holistic doc recommended. THANKS for restoring some of my faith (and hope) in the industry.
Yay yooperlooper. 3 dudes in scrubs. Sounds like a grunge band. Always want to encourage lifestyle first. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Low-carb, intermittent fasting, 3x week with workout/weights, I’ve lost 23 lbs. I’m 61 been on B/P pills for 7 years. Lowering my pills because my blood pressure was low. Thanks for the vid!
Best video I’ve seen summing up blood pressure. I’ve had high blood pressure for 3 years, since I was 22. I’m 6ft 2, a healthy weight but for some reason I have high blood pressure. My doctor had me do some tests such as an echocardiogram and an ECG, everything came back fine. My cholesterol is raised as well, with my renin levels being slightly raised. As I suffer with anxiety, it felt as though many of my symptoms were due to my adrenal gland being overactive - I have this test in the coming weeks to see if my kidneys are okay. Anyway, I’m starting to exercise every day, quit vaping and lead a less sedentary lifestyle. My current BP fluctuates between 135/85-140/99. I’ll hopefully come back to this comment and have better results. There is a lot of misinformation online and it terrifies me, specially for my age as google says it’s incurable. Anyway, good luck to anyone reading this and I’m sure we can all beat high blood pressure🙌
Don't know if this is helpful to you, but stress, general overall stress gave me elevated BP. Sounds maybe a little funny, but as soon as I got out of a bad long term relationship with elevated BP for years, as soon as the divorce was final..my BP was perfect. You have to really look at your life honestly.
In similar situation to yourself 22 year old male suffer high anxiety and stress but do have high bp like 135/140-95/99 . I’m fairly healthy with the odd cheat day iv began walking 2 miles a day and vedgie smoothies daily and going to retake bp in a weeks time just got over covid a couple days ago so not sure if that made it worse or not .
@@thomasmales6248 there isn’t enough information about it out there. My blood pressure is similar to you. I’ve got high functioning anxiety but it’s so frustrating that this happens. Google makes me worry it’s a death sentence but I know with exercise it should lower!
My dad passed and as executor, I was 3 months doing nothing else but handle it. I didn’t exercise, ate too much carbs and sugars and other junk. Tons of stress. Yearly checkup had my BP at 158/94. The previous year it was normal. I decided to healthy with lower carbs but not no carbs. No junk food, chips, etc. no fast food. No sugar. Waked 2 miles, ran 2 miles and full sprint 1/2 mile a day. When I started I could only walk 2 miles a day. Also intense weight training 15 minutes each day. Sleep 7.5 hours. Removed stress. 3 months later my resting heart rate went from 85 to 55. My BP is now 117/75. I’m 5’8” and my weight went from 186 to 171.
What I so appreciate with your videos is not only the transparency of the information, but, also the compassion with which you deliver the same. When you get up in years, it gets harder to make those life changes. Try while younger, make them over time. Less pills, means more enjoyment! Thanks guys, stay healthy up in Canada!☺️
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a 67 yo woman and I've had irregular heartbeats for probably 15-20 years. It always made me nervous when it happens, despite my doctor telling me that it's normal. You have explained this so well that I am no longer afraid of the irregularities. I do have heart disease which runs strongly in my family. Oh, and I drink a lot of iced tea (not a coffee drinker), so I think most of my issues is probably the caffeine. Thank you Docs! You make my day(s)!

I will now follow your various recommendations albeit arthritis is a challenge but I find my swimming pool is my greatest asset in combating the eternal curse of gravity. Thanks a million for your light hearted, enjoyable and expert advise.
Hi, again!! Just had my yearly physical check last Friday..BP logged at 102/76…not bad for a 66 year old if I may say so. My GP (general practitioner doctor) was flabbergasted…yes, I’ve changed my diet, more conscious about exercise (at the gym for at least 2 hours..5 to 6 days a week), still eating my cupcakes, ice cream etc every so often..in moderation. Prefer a good meal over junk food. Cholesterol and other blood tests… jury still out. Have been practicing intermittent fasting. Sure helps with sleeping issues.
Brilliant. I've lowered my blood pressure from 150/80 to 120/70 cutting sugar, bread, lots of processed foods, fried in oils, etc...to a more whole foods: Eggs, Meats, Fish and high quality vegetables and berries. BPM went from 80 averaged down to 60-65 at age 54 too as well as lowered blood sugar.
I am a success story. I started taking a BP pill in my late 20’s and I got off of it at 52. The type of BP pills changed over the years. My success was due to loosing weight by changing my diet, exercise (which I have done my whole life), and giving up caffeine. I am now 55 and feel great. Unfortunately I am going to get a knee replacement in December but I can deal with that. Thank you for all the very helpful and informative videos. ❤️
I enjoy your discussions - very good general information. Please do a video on *how* to take blood pressure readings. Almost always when I go to clinics, they do it wrong, then try to push a medication based on bad (high) numbers. You might have learned in med school that there are more than a dozen conditions to meet. Sitting comfortably, back supported, arm resting on a surface level with the heart, etc. The one commonly missed is relax and put your worries aside for 5 min with no distractions in the room. This is understandable because they don't have a lot of extra time in clinics these days. But it makes 20 to 40 systolic points difference for me, as an older person tending toward the higher side anyway.
Thank you so much Guys. Watching this has educated me more about High blood pressure. For the past 12 days now have been feeling strange; my heart is heavy, and I feel as if it wants to drop and scared. Been to my doc, who advised me to monitor my blood pressure for a week, the reading for the whole week has been between 132/96 to 148/91. I am not an active person, I hardly exercise and not working at the moment, and my diet isn't good enough. I am not on medication yet and I don't want to. Listening to your video has given me the strength to make a fresh, positive start.
At about 63 yrs of age, I went to donate blood. My BP was over 200/? and the nurse was in shock after 3 retests and by a 2nd nurse. I felt fine but went to my doc. Short story, I was so dizzy from meds after several changes in dosage & BP still was 145/?. I quit the meds completely. Cut out all meat for a month and it dropped to 140/?. Now, at age 73, it is sometimes 120/80. I drink too much and smoke. Gods truth. Food choices rule. I'm 90% vegetarian now and feel great! Thank you for a great video once more. :)
I was hospitalised with severe vertigo, balance and vomiting. The ambulance showed and took my blood pressure and found it was 290/185. Thought I was stroking out and they took me to hospital, I was admitted to ICU for 12 days and under went a lot of poking till they got a combo of medication to keep my pressure in check. It was odd as I have been through medicals over the years, I do not smoke, do drugs, drink caffeine and drink very rarely. Now a year later I am on 9 pills and dealing with kidney failure (very stages) and they say the high blood pressure has been present for many years, going by the walls of my heart. Luckily I had no stroke and no ruptured blood vessels, which we all find odd as the pressure was so high. For all the young people please listen to guys like this, you take your health for granted and you end up becoming as drag on health care and a shell of what you were. My only other lucky part is I am in Canada so it didn't cost me millions, got to love our health care system.
homie you lucky, that is so high!!! I also have anxiety which adds to it. The nurse said I needed to relax, Im like I cant. She said think about my breasts then, and that calmed me down. lol
@@Detailguy101 the pressure was when they were taking me in ambulance. My BP topped out at hospital at 305/195 just after getting to hospital. Still have no idea how I didn't have a stroke, now I take my BP everyday myself so I know what and when I'm having issues.
I love you guys because of your shows I am able to better communicate with my doctor about my needs based on what I’m feeling and then letting them make the recommendation of how to handle it awesome job keep making them
My mother-in-law was a petite woman, maybe 5’2” and of normal weigh, a bit on the thinner side. As long as I knew her, she was taking blood pressure medication. Don’t know which one and what the dosage, but she lived until she was 87. Her cause of death was not related to her blood pressure (as far as I know). She was the best in law anyone could have. Your videos are quite interesting and informative. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this informative video. It is refreshing the way you present ,so that you can engage your audience. As a nurse of 40 years, I have enjoyed your videos and appreciate encouragement of life style changes.
Awesome video! I hope a future episode outlines the risks a patient's risks if they refuse to address their hypertension via medications, lifestyle changes. Namely, what internists see in ICU and clinics (heart failure, stroke, dialysis) that unfortunately could have been prevented if they had addressed their hypertension.
What you said is fact, my blood pressure was high for many years and I was taking medication at about 45 I began to work out 30 minutes a day 4 to 5 times a week, change my diet no sugar, lots of nuts and vegetables and my blood pressure is now perfect with no medication and feel great.
I have seen hundreds of videos on YT of Doctors online and most are Americans but i find these Canadiens to be most reputable and honest and i would pay for a consultation .

I was diagnosed with high BP in 2011 and took 8 medications that year before I found one I could tolerate. Long story short, it turns out I have been hypothyroid for most of my life but it was never diagnosed until 2013. Hypothyroidism plays havoc with blood pressure. I'm taking 1/2 pill of desiccated thyroid each morning and 3 BP pills per day. My readings fluctuate as a result of my thyroid problem. I'm healthy otherwise. My readings aren't ideal but I definitely don't want to add another pill into the mix as I have severe medication allergies and intolerances. Oftentimes, there is an underlying condition that causes high BP. Thank you for your informative videos.
@@TalkingWithDocs It's gone down some. I quit eating fried foods. I've also been buying a lot of organic ingredients. I really like putting rasberries, strawberries, bananas, or blackberries in my plain Greek yogurt. I still feel the temptation to buy candy bars, but I'm staying clear of them. I started buying almonds, pumpkin seeds, and pistachios, as well. It's been two months since the ambulance trip. As a father, that really scared me (especially since my parents both died by the time I turned 21). My dad was diabetic, and passed at the age of 55 of a massive brain anuerysm, and my mom passed during her second quadruple heart bypass. She was a heavy smoker, and just 54. I miss them both every day.
very glad to see you Docs who don’t prescribe the Medication right away but ask the patient to change the diet.I am on Amlodipine and Losatan .Ido exercise regularly eat balance diet.

Got diagnosed with hypertension 5 years ago at 25 yrs old refused medication started working out for a few months I was at 244 to 206 I noticed a change in my blood pressure nd way I felt but sadly to say I fell inconsistent & weight went back up to 237. But I’m back to my old habits good habits eating better workout everyday for 2 hours.. seeing some of the blood pressure reports in the comments section made me at ease a lil .. went yesterday my blood pressure was 144/88 … but I seen some comments say 180/110 or higher .. but I’m going to be consistent because health is wealth
Thank you guys so much for this video! It’s very encouraging to know that if we lose weight and make diet & lifestyle changes we have a very good chance of getting off our blood pressure medication (with medical supervision of course) Kudos to all 3 of you! 🥳👍🏆❤️
Was up to 170/110 in the last 6 months of my marriage. Now divorced and separated for 7 months I am down to 118/82. No more living in fight or flight mode. Something to think about.
Glad I found your vlog. One mention you didn't address was high calcium pushing BP up. I can relate to adding pills but once other issues like parathyroid or thyroid is addressed and calcium is normal, BP can drop gradually or rapidly. It's not always considered and can play a key role in better heart health. Sometimes it takes one specialist to push another to make that difference, or advocating for yourself. Thanks for sharing..
that's interesting about calcium. I was taking calcium supplements and my blood pressure was getting out of control. I have high BP anyway but, it was causing me to be sick. I thought it may be the zinc or vitamin d3. that's for making that comment.
Dear doctors, first , thank you for these videos. For years I took blood pressure medication that did not lower my blood pressure. At the end of 2021 I was afflicted with gout. My uric acid was 8.1. With the guidance of a nutritionist I lowered it to 5, lost 10 kilos and my blood pressure went down to normal levels. Diet designed for my specific needs and exercise were the solution. I'm not saying this would work for everyone, but certainly even for those that will need to take medication, diet and exercise is my recommendation. Thank you for your videos and continue your good work. Cheers
I recently took my BP eleven times in one sitting. I got readings from 157/105, 125/93, 143/95, 127/86 . . . all over the board. And "white-coat syndrome" is not only real, it's huge.
Nice and simple advice. I appreciate your "bedside manner" so to speak and not pushing medication if it is not necessary. I'm interested in your opinion. I am 64 years old, 5'6" and not overweight by any stretch of the imagination. Although at 165 lbs I could probably lose 5 or 10. I have been working in valet parking for 30 years and have always had the opportunity to run most of the time but not continuous, only sporadic. I have also recently become a pescatarian but am open to any diet. I do not smoke or drink alcohol. For the most part I eat very, very good. Bottom line is I still have high blood pressure. Im going to cut out sweets and cut back on coffee. I am also going to start a treadmill routine for about 20 min. to a half hour each day. I just don't understand how I have high blood pressure in the first place based on my lifestyle. Could it be related to something else? Thank you for listening and keep the videos coming.

I hope down the road you might get a chance maybe you can bring in a gastrologist to talk about GERD. That would be really awesome. Keep up the good work Docs.
Also a talk about hypnic jerk of the stomach or gremlins when one goes to sleep at night. No pain, just a microsecond movement of something in the stomach area when laying down. Happens once every night for 40 years now.
Ask before u stop. I was on 2, one for lowering BP, the other was for regulating rhthym which MD never mentioned. Now I take the 2nd one only, not for BP, but to keep beat regular. So ask.
You guys are awesome seriously!!! :) I am taking Amlodipine (Norvasc) only, intially it was 7,5 and I am 27 years old. We agreed to stop the pill and closely monitor the blood pressure. I am at 2.5mg as from today until tomorrow I stop completely. I started walking everyday and exercice 10-15 min on a spinning bike and I am now at 118-78, sometimes 115-83 or when I am anxious I can be at 130-85, it really depends. Medidation is also exceptional for lowering my BP. There is hope for everyone seriously, at least try by exercising and watch the diet... I would say anxiety is also a pain in the ass since it raises the heart rate and BP as well.... I watched your video about CBD oil, that would be a good alternative to help with numerous factors. Thanks again for the video :)!
I’ve started Mediterranean diet just yesterday. My Dr never told me to diet. I take. Magnesium before bed. I walk 3 - 4 times a day. Here’s hoping in a couple of months I can go off some meds. Thanks Doctors for all that you said
this is great, because many of us have control over our lifestyles but lack money to see a doctor. I see I am on the right path, and well ion the normal range, knowing what to look out for. thank you.

Very informative video guys! I was very surprised to hear that excessive sodium intake wasn’t discussed along with the sugars and nicotine factors. Heartening to know there are at least 3 “real” compassionate doctors in Canada. Not my experience since moving to Toronto from New York. Injured my knee 5 months ago and between the ridiculously long wait times to see an orthopedic doctor and being dismissed so far by 4 because x-rays look OK, I’ve been unable to walk all this time. In bed. Was always athletic and low BP. But because of all the stress, pain and anger at “free” Canadian healthcare I now have high blood pressure and am on a med. Have great knee surgeon in NY, but too weak to get there. Thanks for letting me rant. Whenever issue is resolved, I’ll get back to exercise, get off med and move back to US. Can’t speak for all of Canada, but the “free” Ontario health care system is great, unless you need it! If you 3 real doctors have any guidance I’d appreciate it. Thanks and glad I found you. Great job.
Hi Harriet. Sorry to hear this. The pandemic has made things worse for sure. Sounds like if you have pain and a normal X-ray you may need an MRI which your family doctor could order for you. Hope it gets better. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I know I will get a lot of push-back for this, but I have difficulty getting too upset about the entire topic of blood pressure. I say that because everything I read says that your bp reading depends on sooooo many variables (such as have you recently eaten? , if so-- how long ago--- and what did you eat?, how much fluid have you consumed--and how long ago,? have you recently exercised?, if so-- how what kind and how much exercise?, what time of day did you take the reading--morning or night?, were you sitting or standing? Left arm, wrist, or right arm,? what type of machine did you use? Also, why does the "ideal" blood pressure continue to get lower? Additionally, I notice this whenever I go to ANY doctor's office for ANYTHING: Although they insist on taking my blood pressure, it is never done by the doctor him/herself. Instead, it is taken by a person of unknown title with unknown training. And instead of allowing me to sit and relax for 10 minutes or so prior to the reading (as all of the medical books list as a requirement), they immediately run at me with the blood pressure cuff as soon as I walk back to the testing area. All of this tells me to be careful before beginning to take medication to lower my blood pressure (all of which have reported negative side effects, some serious). I also keep in mind that our doctors know only what they are taught in medical school, and many of the professors who do the teaching are either employed by or own stock in the companies that make the drugs. Lastly, just anecdotally, I have a relative who is almost 100 yrs. old and has NEVER taken ANY prescription meds on any regular basis, although all of his doctors have tried to medicate him for ("extremely high") blood pressure for decades. All of those doctors are now dead, while he is still doing quite well. Just some things to think about.
Thank you doctors for your thoughtfulness and education! However, there are medically trained patients like myself (lost my father to a preventable CV event in his 40s- probably the same situation. ) I knew I had clean arteries and a good CV system. I studied many treatment modalities. I was having serious episodes and 3 strokes, I threw a necessary tantrum on my MCO for a dearly required MRI. Why am I the only one not shocked: I have hyperaldosteronism from a myelolipoma on my left posterior adrenal gland! Spironolactone!
Hi Jan. Sorry to hear that. Not sure exactly why that test wasn’t ordered. It usually takes a lot of information into account. Hope you are ok. Thanks for watching and subscribing
What a great video ! I was diagnosed here in the Ottawa region with borderline high blood pressure when I was 19 yo. Thing is, it's my diastolic pressure that goes up. It can peak in the 115-120 range but my systolic pressure won't be too bad in the 120-130 range. Could it have to do with genetics ? For reference, I am now 39 yo, BMI of 23, drinks only tea, mediterranean diet, do not use salt and do my 150 min of aerobic activity, that said I am an anxious person. Can anxiety play such a big role in my pressure ? I got on BP meds 3 months ago.

Hi Docs, I'm 50 and have been on blood pressure meds for the last 3 years. I just stopped the meds 2 months ago. For about 10 months now I am following intermittent fasting for 15/16 hours daily. I exercise 5 days a week and eat 95% healthy meals. I use almond milk and have no sugar. The unhealthy part is the occasional portion controlled baked item or a once a month slightly sugary item. My blood pressure reading is still at 148/100. I do not want meds. Any advice here? Thanks
Hi Ridwaan. It can be tricky for sure. Some people do need medication. You could consider a whole food plant based diet which has been shown to lower blood pressure. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Hi Connor. Thank you for letting the ads play through. That helps us pay for editing costs, etc. We are so glad you enjoy the content. Doing our best to help people in any way we can.
I have high BP since I was 50, that's to say, that was the first time it was measured: 240/100. I was given beta blockers, but that ruined me for I lost all energy instantly. My heart rate is in the range 42 - 48, and lowers to 30 at night. Got ACE 2 then, which lowered it somewhat to 160/85 or so. But even then many times my BP meter showed EE: over 200. My house doctor didn't believe it, so we did a parallel check: 220. I got diuretic pills and BP went to 150 or so. Now on ACE 2 inhibitors only, and BP is somewhere in the range 140 but in stress situations easily increases to 190. My BMI: 23 as ever since I was 25, and when you would remove the 'excess' muscles it would be around 20 or so. Doctors keep telling me my BP is too high, but I stopped worrying about it. Nothing helps.
Hi asphalt. That is tough. Beta blockers can be difficult on the energy front for sure. Wishing you the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Check your vitamin D level. My blood pressure is fine as long as vitamin D level is 60-80 ng/mL. This is above what is defined as 'normal', but not a toxic level. Read recent research regarding vitamin D and blood pressure. I run 3X/week and hike on the weekends, eat healthy, but if my vitamin D is low my pressure is high.
@@kathya1929 I take 4000iu (100 micrograms) vit D every day and in the Sommer I spend hours outside every day . Vit D was checked earlier but even then was normal (don't know the level).
My blood pressure was 178/98...had a pounding headache and very tired . Doctor put me on meds and the side effects are really not much better than having high blood pressure . It sucks always having a headache but I'm not near as tired . I'm now walking 3 times a day and trying to eat better , want to get off the meds .
I have never had a problem with hypertension until suddenly this year. 165/95 thereabouts at my doctors appt in January and 180/100 at the follow up just a few weeks ago. I'm 51 and NEVER had levels like this. It was always in normal range in past physicals. I had a severe case of COVID (most likely Delta) in December. Could that be the cause? It's all I can think of. I've eliminated salt which I did use a lot and am taking hydorcholorthiazide and am about to start amlodipine. But, I'm flabbergasted as to where this came from. My most recent lab results were all good. Any ideas?
Similar here-solid 110/70 til suddenly 210/200 Unbelievable (No Covid, tho, thank goodness) 4 months no sodium, wfpb diet with some tuna/salmon cause of bean and soy allergies….barely a change in my numbers😮
Almost everyone is deficient in potassium. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon on each of two meals a day and your BP will go down. I was struggling trying to my BP down from around 140/80. I started doing intermittent fasting (2 meals a day) and added potassium to my diet in the form of potassium chloride ("NO SALT"). I lost 25 lbs. in 4 months and my BP went down to around 115/70.
Hi Barko10. Glad you got the BP under control. So most people are actually not potassium deficient but North Americans especially consume way too much salt. Not just from the shaker but in most processed and prepared foods. Read the label. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I take my bp every day and have for ten years or so now and one thing I've learned is that coffee effects my bp. My thought is that the caffeine seems to raise my anxiety or sensitivity to it and it's that raised anxiety that is what causes by bp to run up. If I go off the coffee the bp comes right down again. This might run in a family because my mother could only drink decaf or it would affect her as well. So not sure about the hereditary thing but it seems for me it might be a factor. Just my thoughts on it from a decade of tweaking and testing to see what works.
"The average Canadian requires 3 different pills a day to control BP'. Interesting. I am taking Amlodipine calcium channel blocker. Just one tiny tablet a day. BP is under control at 120/70. Have not experienced any side effects whatsoever! Am also exercising and trying to watch diet. But not in a hurry to stop medication since I am experiencing no side effects.
Hey Docs! I’m 20 abs recently been having high blood pressure. Just today it was at 140/87. I’m 5’2 and weight 160. My BMI is about 28-29. I’m sure you know that means I’m over weight for my height and age. I workout 5-6 time a week and don’t see anything changes. Would y’all recommend a diet pill, weight loss pill because I don’t want to start bp meds bc I know I can physically get myself there but I’m not reaching a healthy weight.
Hi Mariah. It is hard to say the specific cause. Weight loss may help. In general we recommend a diet made up of primarily plants and whole foods to help with weight loss. You can try to reduce any added salt. Exercise is always a good idea. But some people need medication. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Hi! Just my two cents. Maybe look at what your eating. That may be what's keeping you from losing weight. Also, think about intermittent fasting. There's information regarding it helping with weight as well as BP. Be well!
@@thegreatestmantoevrwlkthep9986 there is a lot more to losing weight than calories in calories out. People are too quick to judge. I used to be like that, until my body suddenly changed and a car accident put me on the "other side of the looking glass". I gained SO much weight, then lost 30 pounds but didn't know it was because I had become diabetic!I did everything my doctors told me to do, and have gained pounds instead of losing! Now I'm a kidney patient too.. I'm currently experimenting with the results of research from the 50's and 60's, plus other ideas that are more avant-garde, coming up with a unique program of my own...and I lost 30 pounds, regained them, lost 20 pounds, then plateaued. SO... I'm upgrading my program again, getting info from TH-cam, the Mayo Clinic website, my specialists, etc...and I've lost 4 pounds of pure fat, but gained 4 pounds of muscle! Yes, my dietician has a device that measures body composition, makes a WHOLE lot more sense than calories in calories out!
Great common-sense advice. Gee .... 3 tablets a day. No thanks. More self discipline and healthy decisions sound the best way to keep BP at good levels. Going for a walk now.
Well, I’m 71, 146 lbs, exercise 5 days a week and have been on 3 tablets for 10 years (increased from 1, then 2 since I was 35). It’s not always about self control. The Dr can’t tell me why I have high blood pressure.
Im glad this doctors look healthy. I had a doctor who was over weight give me advice on health and my blood pressure. And i thought why should i take his advice. I did though. A few years later.
How do I know when I'm ready to stop my BP pill? Do I need to wait until I feel dizzy? I checked my blood pressure every morning. Thank you doctors. I'm glad to hear that I'll be able to get rid off my BP pill someday.
Thank you Doctors for finally saying “ let’s try lifestyle changes before shoving a pill down a throat”. I strongly agree with the Mediterranean diet. Absolutely the best! ❤
Thanks Docs, always a very interesting and relevant topic, watching from Scotland. I had hypertension 30 years ago, which was picked up as a abnormal, turned out I had a renal tumour. Obviously that’s very unusual! I’m 57 now and am on BP meds this last year, annoying as my weight is good and I do heavy exercise 5 times a week and I don’t smoke.
I lowered my blood pressure by retiring. It was amazing how my high blood pressure went away after I stopped workiing. My doctor is amazed.
Yes Elizabeth stress plays a huge role. Congrats! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I was diagnosed with hypertension about 15 years ago.
Hi David. That’s awesome! This is possible but most people just don’t follow instructions. Congrats. Thanks for watching and subscribing
So if you have high blood pressure you can get it to a normal level of blood pressure?
I started an exercise program and changed my diet by eliminating pork and beef. Lost 45 pounds and dropped my blood pressure down to the low limit. My doctor said "That is not the problem I wanted to solve". He laughed and said eat more salt and we will check it later. I did have it checked later and I was back to normal.
So basically he told you to be a vegetarian lol

You forgot to mention Alchohol., stopping all booze lowers the BP too. I used to drink a bottle of wine every night after work & my BP was 192. - 90.

Agreed Bill. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I've also been told to go to the loo immediately before taking a reading - full bladder can push the reading up.
But still if you have 165 while just walking, but 125 when sitting - is it ok?

Good idea Bill. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs Not one mention of insulin resistance which is at epidemic proportions?
@@dannymoulton4829 he talks about changing the diet repeatedly which in turn would help insulin levels
What you said is fact, my blood pressure was high for many years and I was taking medication at about 45 I began to work out 30 minutes a day 4 to 5 times a week, change my diet no sugar, lots of nuts and vegetables and my blood pressure is now perfect with no medication and feel great.

Thanks for sharing Pj. Yes there are many causes that need to be ruled out for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
that's interesting about calcium.
Cheers

Very informative video guys! I was very surprised to hear that excessive sodium intake wasn’t discussed along with the sugars and nicotine factors. How much of a part does Sodium play in high blood pressure patients? Should we always strive to lower daily sodium intake or is it not that large of a factor to keep in consideration? Thanks in advance!

@@TalkingWithDocs I can attest that the best medication for High blood pressure is Metoprolol I take, 200 mg every night with absolutely no side effects, and you get a two for one benefit with this medication, you avoid migraine headaches to, medically proven. The best time to take Metoprolol is before bedtime at night, because thousands of Americans die during their sleep every night due to high pressure, and stroke, because of the rise, during sleeping hours and since High blood pressure is considered a "Silent killer," you can be assured that you will wake up okay every morning.
As far as I know, no research has shown that reducing sodium is a blood pressure benefit for anyone who does not have hypertension.

Up to you whether to worry about it or not.
Have you had it removed?

Any ideas?

@@TalkingWithDocs So you are saying most people get 2500 mg of potassium a day? They don't...

Also I’ve been workings out consistently (weight training) for 8 months now

You’re either eating too much or not working out correctly… end of story
@@thegreatestmantoevrwlkthep9986 there is a lot more to losing weight than calories in calories out. People are too quick to judge.
