To be fair, I don't think the producers anticipated Zapatera throwing a challenge just to get rid of Russell. Or everyone on Ometepe turning into Boston Rob's personal army of goats. EDIT: I think the real problem with the Redemption Island twist is that it's far too reliant on the *players* to make it work. As we've seen in both Redemption Island and South Pacific, if the returnee is in a position outside of the majority, they are far less likely to be able to ingratiate themselves back into the game. Especially more so if one player is running the entire game (i.e., Boston Rob and Coach) and is dead set on sending the returnee right back out of the game.
I don't remember the twist being awful. So, I agree.. I just remember it was Rob's game to lose at one point earlier in the season that sours the whole experience for me. An all newbie season with this twist back when it filmed could have been a lot more entertaining imo. I could be wrong.
Anyone else find it funny that every voted out player this season was like swearing revenge on the tribe that voted them out, only for Matt to return and immediately swear fealty to Ometepe again The one player to be legitimately blindsided by his own alliance immediately went right back to them
Rob is the only reason I don't put this season on the bottom. Or close to it. Rob is such a great narrator that he is entertaining from beginning to end.
It’d probably work better with 3 tribes instead of 2 Both Redemption Island and South Pacific were complete Civil Wars between both the main tribes dramatically reducing the effect of a returnee
I think it’s interesting to think about this. We had Matt, Andrea, Ozzie, Ozzie, Laura M, and Tina get to re enter the game from Redemption. Three of the six were immediately eliminated and sent home/ back to redemption. Ozzie broke the twist by voting himself out to come back, but the second time he would have immediately been sent home if he hadn’t won immunity, and while Laura survived a few votes she was not a power player in the game and just a pawn of Tyson’s. I like the idea of someone getting a chance to fight and return back into the game, but in these three seasons Survivor failed at the execution. Would have loved to hear your thoughts on how to make it better or see a part two/ three with South Pacific and Blood Vs. Water
Here’s smoother could work. You have a season of 20 contestants. On the very first day, 16 of them are assigned to tribes while the other get sent to Redemption. When a person is voted out and goes to Redemption, they get to choose who they want to compete with of the four. The winner of the duel returns to the game on the tribe that was at Tribal Council while the loser goes home. Once the first four duels have been done, have another group of four go in and repeat until the merge. Then, you go back to regular Redemption Island.
I want to visit a timeline where Rob and Russell are put on the opposing tribes. Not only do I feel like things could have been more interesting because of how boring the season ended up being, Phillip and Russell on the same tribe would have been a sight to watch.
My take: 1) merge is the cut off 2) drop the duel and only do 1 challenge at the merge like edge. 3) give the returning player a form of immunity or advantage for their first tribal. 4) give the people still in the game a reason to care about the people on redemption like in blood vs water
survivor is a mix of physical, social and strategic games. redemption island just makes the physical game way more important, since you could theoretically get to final 5 just by winning challenges (I suppose you could also do that by winning individual immunity, but redemption island offers another venue and you only need to beat 1-2 people at a time)
One of my favorite things that I saw in Survivor Quebec that I wish they would bring in for a season in the US Survivor was how they did redemption island. They didn't announce it at all, there was just a sign at the end of the path the post-merge contestants walked down after having their torch put out. They didn't do a challenge until there were 3 people, so the remaining contestants had to wait until the first duel to see why there wasn't a jury yet.
The Outcast Twist is superior to Redemption Island (and Edge of Extinction) for a few reasons. First, it ends at the merge. No getting back in at final five. Also, the Outcasts had to win a challenge to get one or two players back in rather than someone being guaranteed to get back in at the merge and at final five. Finally, the Outcasts had to get voted back in at tribal council. Plus, it just worked so well with the theme of Pearl Islands. Redemption Island was a flop.
And to add even more, redemption Island and edge of extinction are up screentime from each episode, while the outcast twist only affected 2 episodes (in terms of screentime)
1. Russell and Rob shouldn't have been there. We know Jeff wanted Rob to win so bad. 2. Horrible cast. 3. Worst final 3 ever. 4. Redemption Island is not a bad idea. They didn't know how to make it work.
Hundreds of ppl on staff & no one brought up how dumb calling it a duel was? Jeff's head is only full of Survivor bs, Rock & Roll trivia & Howard Stern knowledge
I've always liked the twist, but it should've been pre-merge only in a 100% newbie or all-stars season, either to keep the first returnees voted out longer in the game or to give a 2nd chance to newbies with great potential who got voted out early like Kelley Wentworth.
He played one more time after this; so to date, he's played a total of FIVE times. He's one of the most overhyped, overrated, and overused players of all time.
I think I would have hated this season watching it live, because I would have been pulling for Matt the full time and him not even making it back into the game? I would have been peeved off. Plus it just sucks in general as a concept. Like even though Matt was able to extend his lifespan in the game way farther then usual, he also had like user input into the social or strategy game. So even if he get's back in he's nothing but an easy vote out. I think for redemption island to work, they still need to have ways to interact with the group. Like maybe they stick at camp but they have gray buffs, and they're not allowed to vote. So people can keep getting to know them, and can incorporate them into strategies(You'd also make it clear when they were coming back into the game if they won). It would also add a little bit of Chaos, like an alliance has been buttering up a challenge beast to carry them through to the finale, and give them number advantage premerge, but their sacrifice play suddenly beats that person out at the last moment, and suddenly the other alliance who has been working with them has a brand new game going into merge.
I think Boston rob is one of the greatest players of all time, but his only win coming in a season where he’s already played 3 times and everyone else is a newbie really ruins his win for me personally, like it wasn’t earned
I think survivor Quebec did this twist right. They have smaller episodes every weekday and they used that to build up the characters on redemption island as well as the ones in the main game. And the two players who returned actually did something. Audrey this season caused so much chaos and upended the game the short time she returned and Nicolas who went on to win the game
People think this is the first time Redemption Island was introduced, but I do believe the Swedish had it in there version in 2002 and many other versions had it, like the Israel version, had it before the US did.
I probably should have saved this for unpopular opinions section, but I actually thought edge of extinction fixed a lot of the flaws with the redemption island twist
Season 22 is fun for watching Rob win strong in tough immunity challenges and absolutely dominate the social game. The twist though interesting is more of a detriment to the season. Arguably it would be good in 90 minutes episodes though.
After recently watching, I really enjoyed the social aspect the redemption challenges brought. The idol reveal, and the Hantz gals pledging they would flip if they made it to the merge added interesting wrinkles to the game. They have a similar thing now with the adventures or whatev, but people don't know what they are getting into with those, so people can't use it the same. Redemption Island seems like a waste because the redemptioners have so little agency. They are just not playing, and then if they win they are just inserted. I think it could work better if it was always trios, and the visitors got to spend time with the redemption folks. Redemptioners would kinda be actually playing, even if it is more limited in scope. Maybe let each set of visitors choose to give an advantage in the challenge so there is some politicking as well. Like maybe if Zapatera was giving advantages to Matt to court him, and Omatepe was giving advantages elsewhere, Matt woulda flipped. Or if both tribes help 1 out of the now 3 people, they know they are both courting the same person. since the visitors are usually duos, it could easily change too, or they don't agree and no advantage is given. Main point being, Redemption was too compartmentalized from the main game. It has potential, and with some tweaks it coulda had lots of strategy around it.
@dukane14 Oh, I agree.. I like the idea of the twists, but the effects are pretty meh nowadays. Without all of the advantages, I don't know if the castaways can carry the show's entertainment (with some exceptions).
The obvious thing is to also give them an idol that is only good for the next tribal council, so they have the opportunity to be part of a vote that gets someone else out.
I agree. And my fix is simple: The same way a person can't sit out back-to-back challenges, a person shouldn't be allowed to be sent to redemption island back to back. That's shitty television
I actually really liked this twist....at first at least, it keep the first half of the game more interesting and the early first boots a little more relevant for longer. Especially when I'm binge watching a bunch of seasons in order back-to-back lol Although once this season hit it's halfway point, it was kind of clear that it was Rob's season to win it, as the rest of the players kind of devolved into nothing, with blind loyalty, not letting anything else interesting happen later on, with no alliance swaps etc. But I'm happy that Rob finally got himself a win though.....while also beating Russell too! Lol Almost the same thing with the next season, South Pacific, too! Christine running up all the wins like Matt did, until throwing Ozzy in there, and then once Ozzy returned, it really was the best way for him specifically to move forward because the alliance breakdown at that point and strong loyalty again would have never let him stay longer.....with the Redemption Island name almost living up to how we wanted it to play out, if only Ozzy had won that last immunity challenge, he would have been finally three and won all the votes!! Lol
I feel like the fault is more on the mergers than the game itself They CHOSE to eliminate Matt first opportunity. They CHOSE to eliminate Andrea first opportunity.
If someone says the Redemption Island twist sucks because the person who returned to the game didn’t win, they can’t turn around and say Edge of Extinction sucks because Chris returned and then won the game. I honestly don’t remember where you fall on that one, but I hope it’s consistent.
I don't think either twist sucked, but neither was ever executed to its fullest potential. I do think season 27 does this twist best and season 38 does EoE best.
@@OnceUponAnIsland I can dig both those takes. I tend to agree with Jeff that returnee seasons can use a safety net like RI or EoE. But I don't need them in newbie seasons.
The twist wasn't wasted. The season was designed to teach Russell a lesson. Anyone with a single working brain cell would have understood the boner production of the time had for Boston Rob; indeed, he's one of Probst's all-time favorites to this very time stamp. It just worked _too well,_ as the tribe Russell fell to wasn't interested in indulging the coveted showdown scenario. Not that it was that hard, really; they had the chance to see him in action (unlike the Villains) and lacked an equivalent to Natalie White within their ranks. And both of the girls he ultimately went with (build like and in the age range of a Laker Girl, which I think Natalie Tenerelli actually was) proved to be just as bad at Survivor as he was. Props to Rob for learning from his mistake around Coach; Phillip was a hundred times harder to handle, and that experience really worked to his benefit.
I think it only barely works in a bvw context an always sucks elsewhere It conceptually sucks as it just takes the tension out of tribal and guarantees the best challenge player goes deep despite that already being very rewarded
My problem wasn't the redemption island, it was Ometempe being starstruck into throwing their game away for rob. Say what you will about Zaptera, but at least they knew not to give Russell a free ride to the end.
They did fix it. Put a likable player there and have them win every challenger. Not there fault it fell through and he couldn’t win the one final immunity challenge to make a hero win South Pacific.
I hated this season. I hated redemption island and I couldn’t stand Phillip. I can’t remember what got Matt eliminated in the first place, but in my opinion, he should’ve won the game.
People competing in challenges for a chance to return into the game is a really interesting idea, the execution although…
It's almost like that was the topic of this video

Just not in the way he thought he would be

Just because of this he’s gonna be the most remembered player from that cast in the future

And to think that on any other season Matt would've been most likely "forgotten early boot"

Remember that weird commercial where they were literally giants towering over Jeff?
Yep, I include it in Rob's story because of how prominent they advertised their duel only for nothing to happen.

If Matt had won the final duel and went on to win the season, it would have been one of (if not the) best arc in all of Survivor.
Especially if he beat Rob at final tribal too or won final immunity and voted Rob out at 4.
