Philip is the type of guy to be sent deep undercover and walk up to the mafia boss and say "I'm not supposed to tell you this, but I used to be a federal agent." He would genuinely expect that to win their trust, and then somehow, by some unbelievable miracle, actually manage to do so. This man is the definition of failing upwards, to the point that you may actually think he is a genius.

Sad to see someone who has watched as much survivor as you to not understand the complexities of Phillip and his strategy… he made no dumb moves we are just too stupid to understand them.

I truly believe in the conspiracy theory that this whole season was designed for a Rob win by placing him on a tribe full of easily controlled,, impressionable people and nothing will ever change my mind.
I thought him and Russell picked a random buff. Unless that was rigged somehow
You just have to look at the Heroes vs Villains reunion, where Rob challenged Russell to another go-around and got a yes without hesitation. Production knew exactly what had just landed in their lap.
That cast was crafted precisely to all of Rob's strong suits and all of Russell's weak suits, but with _one_ way to threaten Rob. The instant he got off the chopper, Russell would need to move all the way out of his comfort zone and stay there. He gets his core four early or someone else does, without him. With three Ometepe fitting his default alliance requirement versus only two on the Zapatera, it wouldn't be enough.
And seeing as how he wasn't at the first two Tribal Councils, it's not like he didn't have time to get the numbers.
Unfortunately that has largely been disproven since Rob was literally not on the original cast for this season.
(The season was actually supposed to be Russell Hantz vs Richard Hatch)
Keep in mind Rob had to draw the ometepe buff to succeed
@@r.d.b.941 I saw an old interview from Jeff Probst where he basically says the next season will be Hatch vs Hantz, and there was further press done between Hatch and Hantz trash talking each other as buildup for this season.
However, late into the process, casting realised that since Rob had a real pre-existing rivalry with Russell that they could capitalise on.
A season with Na Onka, Phillip, Coach, Kass & Abi Maria would be bananas. I want it now.

When I watched the season, Phillip was literally "something else", not always in a good way. That's why he was so unique, entertaining but also controversial. And I think he hasn't complained about earning even 100k

I think what happened with Francesca is that when Phillip heard her say that Rob wouldn't be voted out tonight, he honestly didn't even consider that she was lying. He legitimately thought she was betraying their deal and called her out on it. It shows a lack of understanding of how Survivor is played but it's my best guess as to what happened there.

The Boston Rob versus Russell Hantz theme never made any sense to me, Rob is a huge asset around camp and an insanely physical competitor, and Russell has openly sabotaged both of his tribes on seasons past.
Like everyone wants Rob around for at least the pre merge, Russell should always be the first boot from the tribe.
It felt a bit tacked on.
@@OnceUponAnIsland Jeff first suggested it at the Heroes vs. Villains reunion show, and then they did it in the next filming batch. It wouldn't surprise me if they already had an 18 person season planned with the Redemption Island twist, and then decided to cut 2 of the players and add Rob vs Russell when they saw how popular the rivalry was.
@XanderMatthews-nv9zf Thank you for your summary! You actually partially channeled my feelings on Rob Mariano and rotten Russell Hantz. If I was on either Seasons 19 or 20, I would have done my best to eliminate rotten Russell Hantz on his tribe's first Tribal Council. Rob is a far better player than rotten Russell!

While I can see the comparisons with Coach I think a huge difference between Phillip and Coach in there first seasons, Coach while was delusional had people like Tyson and Debbie who wanted to work with him, where as Philip the people in his alliance are more begrudgingly working with him.
Tbh, I find Philip incredibly annoying, but he was still entertaining. Coach is in a league of his own. No one can top Coach!

Phillips's personality can be best summed up by a quote from Malcom in S26 Caramoan: "It was worth playing two hidden immunity idols to guarantee we got to vote out Phillip"
People that hated seeing him on their screens and cheered when his torch was snuffed in the Caramoan season don't understand exactly why he got in front of the jury.
Boston Rob learned from his previous mistakes, boy did he ever.
just reminder guys Boston Rob has hated so much by the jury that they wanted to vote for Phillip. many stated in post game interviews that had Phillip owned his game and said his behavior was apart of his strategy (ex: Loudmouth strategy made famous by Evil Dick) to dope Rob, he would’ve won. but alas Phillip acted more delusional than Coach did in his Final Tribal Council performance.
I think the only way Phillip could win the game is a Final 2 with Natalie T.
Oh my gosh! This is going to be awesome. Phillip is a S tier character in the dark age of survivor. What's crazy is if he turned on Rob at 4 there's a chance he wins lol I don't see Natalie or Ashley winning.
Ashley and Natalie were hated more than Phillip. Phillip worked hard but he was annoying. those two were lazy, catty, and annoying. even Andrea didn’t vibe with them.

Being a strong physical competitor with a decent social game, she beats anyone in the F4 I’m pretty sure as Phillip and Rob were HATED and I mean hated by the jury because of how they were treated on the way out and didn’t respect Natalie cause she was just Rob’s goat. I think she wins in a F3 combination with anyone in the F4.
Rob won immunity at final 4 so there was no chance to turn on him even if he wanted to

Phillip was great. I remember really wishing he'd expose his entire game in Redemption Island as a ruse in order to get to the end. Turns out he wasn't that clever...but he was truly entertaining.

That's correct! I wish Phillip wasn't cast for Season 26 because he was annoying and unnecessarily mistreated Francesca. I must say Francesca is a very smart woman.
Even though I highly doubt it's true, my conspiratorial mind can't help but think that Phillip had some secret agreement with the show to be a character instead of a real competitor and help give Rob the win. I can't see anyone behaving in such a self-sabotaging and delusional way and still think they had a chance of winning. This season was so boring and frustrating to watch, but Phillip made it worse for me personally instead of better.
