  • This Plumbago and Bougainvillea have grown too close together and the homeowner wanted them separated and cut back. The thorns of the Bougainvillea are aggressive so you need to use common sense when cutting and pulling the branches out...otherwise, you'll learn common sense from the Bougainvillea!! You will learn some tips like making 2-3 cuts on a branch to pull it out easier, how to grab onto the branch in between thorns and why you don't really need to wear gloves. Remember to leave the little branches that the plants need alone and follow the Principles of Pruning!
    The Basic Principles of Pruning
    1. Remove Double Branches
    2. Remove Crossing Branches
    3. Remove Dead Branches

Glad you enjoyed it, in my last video I suggested common sense be sold in stores by the pound. 😆 I wish you success as you #prunewithme!

Thanks for this video. I'm a gardener and recently got my 1st flower plant for outdoor patio area.. it's a blue p. (I've only been growing herbs and peppers) And after about a few weeks home it died.. I kept watering it, then added my plant food I use on my peppers and it literally grew overnight.. and has bloomed so big! Bigger than when I brought it home. So now I need to know how to prune. LOL! Thanks for this video it's exactly what I was looking for!!

Thank you for allowing me to watch you work your common sense magic! I have learned much common sense from my 2-story bougainvillea!

hahaha, well I think you need a boom truck to work on your bougainvillea! The skin of my hands are very hard for working 35 years in the field. For that size of bougainvillea, I would recommend to use some kind of hard material to protect yourself from the thorns. I believe that bougainvillea has too many thorns. Thank you very much for watching my videos, I appreciate it. Keep in touch for more material available in the future.

Thank you for subscribing. Most of the things that we should do in this life is related to common sence. Like putting your left shoe on. You dont put it on your right foot, its common sense!

yip. and hell yes, one mistake and you are dead, same with big overgrown roses.
slowly, slowly, careful and carefully, you survive another day.
i am about to attack a great big overgrown plumbago, so now I shall go forward with confidence and brutality,
    just like you showed.
lol. thanks for good tips and information, from deep in the depths of the plumbago bush.
reminds me of conversations round corners with my 84 yo lady, as I am working on her garden. priceless.

    HELP ME PLEASE!
I have at last won a 15 year battle with my wife to try to prune a 3m high x 3m diameter PLUMBAGO tree. Having removed exterior branches which were producing flowers, 3/4 of the INNER part is like a Jungle of DEAD branches although since exposure to light and Sun new shoots are appearing. Is it OK to CUT BACK ALL this deadwood and remove any I can in order to try to control new growth? All and ANY GENUINE advice would be appreciated and gratefully received. At 74 some jobs are becoming difficult. Thank You.

Okay, your thinking is good. In plants that grow vine-like or ground cover like plumbago, lantanas, Rosemary, levandulas and some salvias, when the plant becomes mature and we leave it without pruning for 3-4 years, the new growth starts growing in layers, one on top of the other, year after year. As a result we will have several layers of dead material underneath the new green foliage. I have had success making the canopy of those plants smaller by first removing all the dead material underneath. You should lift up the green layer with a rope or your hand and then remove all the dead material at the ridge of the branch. Once the dead material is cut, gently bring down the healthy material so you don’t break the branches on the main canopy. Once the canopy is down, then remove the longer branches. Reduce the width and height by removing longer branches. Then leave it alone. By doing this, I’ve had the best results. I hope this idea helps you. I am an arborist and live in Fullerton California. Good luck with your plumbago!
