    Plumbago grows great here in Texas!
    I've been growing it for 20+ years in both Zone 7a & 8b.
    And I'm sure it has a wider range than my experience.
    Like you said, it dies back in cold Winters, and comes back nicely in the Spring.
    It's always in my top 5 favs!

    I grew up in Zimbabwe and my mother had a long plumbago hedge which was great for jumping on my Shetland pony. My mum was never amused.

      You must have had a very game Shetland pony as they do get pretty high! I bet the Plumbago coped pretty well with being jumped though, I find you can cut them back massively at any time and they seem to recover very well!🐇

    I just purchased 4 x white plumbago today. I saw it planted in a long drift and loved it. Beautiful plants.

      I’ll keep my eyes open for one of those- I wonder if they are as hardy or more hardy than the blue. Prob my fav plant in the garden at them moment and I never get bored of them! 🐇

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The white plumbago has a different structure, and size, than the blue.
      The white is A LOT larger plant. So make sure you have a good spot for it.
      And the branching is not as bushy, so the white has long sweeping branches.
      But it does grow well in the heat!

    Loads of annuals love this hot, dry weather too - Californian poppy, zinnias, gazania, marigolds. All going crazy in my garden at the moment.

    Lovely choices...getting more heat loving plants into our gardens is a priority for many of us these days. I absolutely love the seseli gummiferum! I was happy to see that it's hardy to my zone 5 garden so that I can get those gorgeous blooms in it's 2nd year....it's on the list for next year. Thank you!

    We need more plumbago in Britain! Brilliant to see it promoted on such a high profile channel.

    I've grown both blue and white plumbago in New Orleans and Austin, TX. The flower through heat and drought even.growing in some shade. Vigorous plants that may die back in hard freezes, but return as green shoots in spring. I can't tell you how many people told me mine were dead only to be reputed by spring flowers.

    O Bunny thank you for your love for one of my loves too.
    My plumbago has never been so abundant, and that in a 35cm pot.
    It is also just next to my front door and because we have large top down windows I can see it all the time.
    I am also South African, living in Cambridge.
    Bought mine at the garden centre in the indoor plant section.
    Kept it in the first year and then out.
    In South Africa they are one of the hardy shrubs.
    Yes I had the deeper blue one, but we called it the Cape Plumbago.
    You have given me a good plan, maybe I will try cuttings, although I am not very good at that.
    Plants used to be so affordable in SA that I never bothered.
    White Plumbago, I don't know, because Plumbago and that blue only Plumbago has is for me the real thing.
    Thank you for your informative videos, I am always pleased to see them.
    And now I am homesick......

    Have Plumago in my front yard in Florida & love the pretty periwinkle blue cottage type flowers. It can grow huge here so you have to trim it back every now & then.

      So really not so special as much more common with you, but with us here, it’s amazing!🐇

    I adore the Windflower rose. Over the last five years I've changed over to old garden roses. David Austen's Shakespeare rose (I have two) has done so well this year. A word of warning about plumbago. Here in Southern CA, it can be invasive. In my old neighborhood, the lady next door told me the blue plumbago in her small yard was the size of a minivan when she first moved there. She would hack it back, but the runners kept going under the fence, and I fought with it for 13 years, until we moved. Here they use them on freeway medians and "cloverleaf" interchanges, because they are huge and hard to kill. Keeping it in a container should solve the problem. I have been babying my wisterias (white issae and purple) in containers for years, hoping each year that I'd have a few blooms. Then I saw a You-tuber in Georgia, who had bought an old farm; between their rain and red clay soil, it was "Wisteria-mageddon" :0

    • @bunnyguinness
      @bunnyguinness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in our climate in uk we would never have an invasive Plumbago - amazing to hear it can be a problem, always fascinating to hear how differently plants perform in different parts of the world! 🐇

    I have plumbago here in my Arizona desert garden but given that we can have summer highs of 110-115F, it likes either partial shade or afternoon shade here.

    Plumbago is one of my favourite plants and is indigenous here where I live. It thrives on neglect and look stunning most of the season. Some plants are just show stoppers, including the lovely Bougainvillea

    • @bunnyguinness
      @bunnyguinness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep meaning to try a bougainvillea in a very sheltered spot, but would need to have some rooted cuttings as back up and they are not that easy to propagate 🐇

    Very interesting to hear your thoughts on these plants. You mention 'Windflower' from David Austin Roses. I can find no mention of it in my current D. Austin Catalogues. On line it just says, 'email me when available'. A couple of plants that have coped with all the hot weather and drought here in Kent with me are Verbena Bonariensis and Perovskia along with several climbing roses.

    • @bunnyguinness
      @bunnyguinness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sorry about Windflower, I’ll check it out with David Austin junior. I do know they are reducing the availability of some roses. Verbena is great here too!🐇

    Plumbago survives the coldest of Cape winters and yet when I try to grow it in Surrey, even moving it to the Summer House over Winter, I cannot persuade it to survive.

    My baby plumbago in a gallon pot froze last winter in one of our 2 freezing nights of the year in CA. I’ll get another and protect it. Our full grown plant did freeze off but shot back out.

    I don’t see Rosa windflower on David Austin website. Could it be another name?

    • @Kay-qt2id
      @Kay-qt2id 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might not be breed by them anymore as I believe that as time goes on some of their roses that they have breeding rights to become allowed to be breed by others so it’s not commercially viable for them to keep selling them. You will need to find someone with the plant.
