Making the Replicators ... with 1999 Technology (Dial the Gate)

- THE THIRD SEASON of Stargate SG-1 proved that the show had plenty more tricks up its sleeve than just the Goa'uld. Even the powerful Asgard were under siege by a grave threat in their own galaxy. The Replicators were spider-like techno-bugs, made up of small blocks programmed to assemble themselves, self-replicate, and consume everything in their path.
One of the creators of the Replicators was Craig Van Den Biggelaar, visual effects supervisor on Stargate SG-1. Along with the rest of Stargate VFX team he has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards (plus a ninth for Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital) - including one for "Nemesis," the Season 3 finale in which the bugs were first introduced.
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate" Craig reveals the daunting task of building and animating computer-generated Replicators with 1999 technology - and the painstaking process of blowing them apart! He also talks about tackling the fully animated Asgard character Heimdall in the fifth season finale, "Revelations."
This is an early preview of Dial the Gate's full-length conversation with Craig, which is streaming this weekend! Watch it on TH-cam starting Saturday, July 6, 2024 (12 pm PT): / @dialthegate

The visual of the Replicators was amazing. The creepy factor of the sound effects really added to the scenes. Thanks for sharing this interview!
I think the hand shaking was even better as off-screen, RDA is hilarious 😂
225 parts? Time to go update the wiki.
Replicators were terrifying, so I'd say they did a pretty good job. 😂
Tapped into the inate biological fear of the human phsyche.
i know just enough about VFX and animation to be hitting myself that it took me this long to realize the MONUMENTAL achievement of The Replicators being as good as they are.
The Replicators aren't complete without their eerie mechanical sound effects. What's worse, hearing one slowly moving above you, or hearing hundreds quickly closing in from all around? The answer, knowing the first will always lead to the second.
I started to watch sg1 in 2001 when I was ten years old and sg1 and star wars was my first steps in a much larger galaxy. It was when I first started to be a scifi nerd/geek. When I was a kid I was a closet sci-fi geek nerd because I was worried about being judged and possibly bullied but now that I'm an adult I wish that I could go back and tell my kid self don't worry about it that it will help to find out who should be around.
big sg fan
Oh come on, it’s just a couple of little blocks…
But for real, this was so interesting! I love the replicators. They’re so creepy and cool. Such a fantastic adversary. They definitely did a great job and I do think they stand the test of time. Thanks so much for posting this
I am playing a paladin rpg game and our Dm introduced different sci fi for us (Babylon 5 and Stargate). I came across an Interstellar aurora ship and an outpost with a lab .Needless to say I kept the tech to myself and refused access to the technology to my Insane teammates. With Great power comes great responsibility as the saying goes. The game is going great and we are having lots of fun with it . Thanks for all your hard work creating Stargate and giving us all these info bits .Wish us luck surviving (drone power is awesome!!)
Interesting. Thank you
Some Screenshots edited in would be nice. feels like a zoom meeting imo.
You'll find images from the show in our other videos, but "Dial the Gate" deliberately avoids it for copyright reasons. Thanks for your feedback.
@@GateWorldDotNet *Is this **#Darren**⁉️* 💁🏼♂️
looking forward to this one!
Practical effects are always amazing.
They're like evil living futuristic Legos
The replicators were really an "OH SHIT"-moment.
It didnt take long before we realized why the Asgard have been so busy.
But lucky for us, there was Sam's stupid idea! :)
Love it
I want my own personal Replicator...
Star Trek style though
Oh wow, I thought that Thor and the others were puppets, like on Farscape. That's really cool.
They are, and the puppets are also fantastically well executed but you can't achieve every shot with a puppet.
Off topic guys but - Have you ever had any info or planned interviews to discuss the Destiny and it's apparent mission to find the long distant signal from the universe' origin? It was an unfinished story but I'm dying to know 😬😫
Here is writer and executive producer Paul Mullie on this very topic: th-cam.com/video/vzL5P7Ht09k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EEGE9EBTn1NDjLc2
*#Darren** we wish you were more involved with the interviews and made these for **#GateWorld** TH-cam channel. We want **#GateWorld** Productions Darren.* ❤
Thanks for your continued support, James. I hope you understand how my other responsibilities prevent me from making a new video every week -- and that it's important to me to continue supporting David and Dial the Gate.
That said ... I'm finishing off a work project this summer and will be going full-time on Stargate for a while! So look for lots of originals this fall.
*Replicators, loved them, always thought they were copied off the Matt Leblanc Lost in Space though* 😂
🤟🏽🤙🏽🤟🏽
It's amazin when it's not quite a villain, but some form of tech vs the heroes, how do you defeat an enemy with one clear aim and no biological conscience, no heart, pure code/logic.
It's the closest thing we had to Trek's Borg.
Milky Way replicators striked more dread into me with their mechanical spider lookin nature, with no emotion... the Atlantis ones were the jealous siblings, a bit emotionally driven.
