I FLEW TO SAN DIEGO JUST FOR THIS VIEW!

  • Thanks to your recommendations, I flew to the San Diego International Airport just for the “close in” approach to runway 9. The approach is one of the closest approaches you can get to a big city and the trip to San Diego was worth it just for the view! Oh, the trill of flying! This is a fully narrated video and includes air traffic control transmissions.

I have experienced this unique approach and landing many times. I always enjoy the sudden drop after Balboa Park and the freeway. It is really fun to watch 777s and occasional 747s fly into SAN.

My only experience landing here was at night in 2011 on a Delta 738 from CVG. I was a bit freaked out by how low we seemed on final and how hard we braked but I would absolutely love it now. Best approach in the US hands down.

There is a restaurant at 2550 Fifth Ave 12th floor, San Diego which has an outdoor dining balcony that captures the landing of flights very close to eye level. As the planes pass by you can also view their landing from the same deck. The landings are neat because you can spot the moment of tires to runway with a puff of rubber smoke.

What a gorgeous view heading into SAN. My brother has extensive training in airline mechanics, he was a manager at Oakland Airport. He always said that out of all the airlines he has worked on (and flew on), Alaska is his favorite airline.

The last time I flew to San Diego was in 1974 -- it's been a long time! I remember that some pilots described the approach as "picking your way through midtown Manhattan for a landing in Central Park."

Technically he could do that. There’s an area set aside for watching plane spotting, on the far east end of the airport property, on Harbor drive. I do believe you can also watch pilots taxiing the runway, getting in position for takeoff.

My best half, meaning my wife, is from San Diego and I've flown into SAN (Lindbergh Field) many times over. It's a beautiful arrival with everything one could ask.
I'll tell you, though, if you want to make my day, take me to Cabrillo National Monument, at the tip of point Loma, do me off, leave me alone for the full day, then come and get me at closing time and I'll be the happiest person you could find. That is one gorgeous place.

In San Diego '75 (US Navy), left San Diego for good in 2014, but go back for yearly annual at Vet Hospital in La Jolla. Fly ida y vuelta Puebla to Tijuana, hoof it across to San Diego Trolley to points north. Flight at airport in Puebla (foot of the active volcano El Popocatepetl, 17K+ ft) is something at right about 7013 ft above sea level runway to almost sea level in Tijuana... both of which would make for a great video. Did the Alaska flight once San Diego to Seattle which was awesome as it was clear in Seattle and the pilot gave us quite a show. Gracias por tu video. Safe travels! I grew up in North Park in the 60s and 70s with Delta DC-8's and AA 707's making sharp banking turns towards the the airport at 1000 feet above my house. In those days you did not have to go all the way to the mountains to make your 180 back to RWY 27. Fun times.

I see this every time I’m down at Balboa park (multiple times a week). Since I’m usually down there around the time the first round of morning flights are coming in (around 9:30) I definitely get my share of plane spotting. If you want the closest view you can get from the park, go over to the playground, across the street from the naval hospital.
