  • The reason I have this film on my channel is it brings back memories to my own parachuting days. This is the legendary skydiving film from the 1970s. It is photographed by Carl Boenish, an american freefall photographer. The music is by Michael Lloyd. See and enjoy.

Love it! Any wet afternoon in the 70's this would come out at Royal Marines Dunkeswell, UK.

So true. I was there too. Great days. Still watching skydiving movies and wishing I was 20 years younger. Blue skies still get to me.

Great days. Capewells, 24’ round reserves, Strato-Star with ropes and rings, baggy suits, Christoph helmet, French Para-boots, Alti on a front reserve pack, rip cords and spring pilot chutes. Wish I was 30 years younger and could jump in todays kit/conditions.

I met Carl in the early days of hang gliding. He was one of the happiest men I've ever met. He always had a grin.
I was in a scene in his other film Playground In The Sky. I even went to his house once to watch "home movies". It was a sad day and a loss to mankind when we lost Carl.
The versions of Playground In The Sky I've found on youtube just have the hang gliding section. He had some great helicopter jumps skydiving in the original release we watched in the theatre in the early 70s. I'd like to see that footage sometime.

Lucky you who have met him. It was very sad that he was killed here in my home country Norway - in Trollveggen, while doing what he liked best.
As a skydiver myself he was one of my idol at that time.

I have a 16mm print of this. Dated 19/7/1972. My dad was a skydiver back then. Don't have anything to play it on. Anyone interested? It has "print 5" on it.

It was around the time that I started jumping and this film was one of the reasons that I continued on to do freefall and instructing. Great times with aged equipment (fore/aft) ex army gear. Hard landings and bulky gear was the standard fare but they were such exciting and invigorating times. I still have close friends from that era. The risks that we took would not be tolerated today but it was always a great time with good mates. I would love to do it again.
