A really great classic film of skydiving in the 70's. This and Masters of the Sky, also by Carl Boenish. I started jumping in 1972, so I can really identify with the jumpers in the films - probably jumped wth them as well. I'm now 77 years old and I'm still currently jumping with almost 4,000 skydives. D-6610 skydive license. So many very fond memories.

That is great. I am also a former skydiver. C-133 skydive license.

I was a jumper in the late 70’s and 80’s. This movie was a staple at parties, available then on 16mm. I really do miss those days. Big suits, Strato Clouds and a brand new Wonderhog container were all cutting edge technology.

I agree. I took my first jump in 1970. The parachute was a TU (standard millitary type). I later got a French Papillon parachute - and finally a a 5 cell Strato Star. That was the top of my parachuting days. I miss it too.

Ah yes, the Papillon. My first canopy was a Para Commander. Never jumped the Strato Star, just the Cloud. Even got a few jumps on the 26’ Strong LoPo when the Cloud decided to not open fully that day. The 70’s and 80’s were good times at the Drop Zone. Jumping was still relatively affordable for the average guy, not so much today.

This movie used to show regularly on Nickelodeon when I was 4, back in 1981. No idea how many fires Carl lit, but I was one of them.

We used to watch this in the clubhouse at the DZ waiting for the wind to drop so we could skydive. Very often it didn't so the movie was as close as we got! I haven't seen this for years. Thanks for posting it.

Saw this on Nickelodeon when I was 4. It wasn't until when I rediscovered it in 2014 that I realized this fire was lit by none other than Carl Boenish himself. These legends inspired an entire generation and beyond.

Know very well of Carl and Jean Boanish, never seen this film in its entirety. Many thanks. Jamie (Ex Skydiver 2004-2012)

OMG, love this! So nostalgic. My kid is jumping now and I tell her about frap hats and she is shocked. Canopy stacks? Shocked. Lol. We had a great time, lots of fun, lots of jumps. My D-license is in 7ks, wscr 700's, CRW 1000's. Jumping El Cap (1981 open for 3 weeks with permits!) - We were there. You brought back lots of great memories for us. Thank you.

Thank you so much for posting this video!!! My uncle died this week and he was an avid skydiver in the 70s. Someone on reddit sent me this video and there is footage of people skydiving from the exact same plane as him (at 3:25 in the N9533Z plane). He wasn't in the footage but seeing a relic from his past brought me so much joy. Thank you :)

You're not wrong. This film was made by Carl Boenish, considered the father of modern day BASE. Highly recommend "the Sunshine Superman."
