*HUGE BLUE MARLIN*!!! Catch Clean Cook

  • In this episode we find a blue marlin feeding on the surface and pitch it a dead mahi.
    We only had our swordfish rods rigged up so we hooked the mahi and the marlin ate it. We wound up fighting the marlin for along time and decided to bring it home since it looked like the chance of survival was minimal. Back at the dock we fillet the marlin, FWC gets some info from it, and then we head home to cook it. We grill some up and make a Poke bowl. Enjoy

    Whenever I have to keep a trophy, when I don't want to, I think about the thousands of other fish I have released that most people wouldn't. It's no consolation but it balances my rationale.

      I feel you bro. I always think about how far the fish has made it. I live on a smallish lake so I think of how long it’s been learning and thriving just for some scumbag (me 😂) to come and catch it and kill it. So I usually throw back trophies. Plus makes for good future generations

    Brings back memories in early 70's wright after HS graduation 2 buddies and myself went on a half day charter out of Ft Lauderdale, and another person on the charter we did not know. It was about the tail end of the half day, and a Blue Marlin hit, captain yelled your turn, but you have to mount it. My friends and I all passed, as we had no money to mount it. The other person said I'll take it, and the fight was on from the wooden fighting chair. Well after awhile the 4th person became so tired, we all wound up in the chair taking turns. About 4 hours into the fight we finally landed the Blue Marlin. It was a sight to see it jump out of the water and all the colors of the fish through the glistening waters. At this time the 4th persons turns to the captain and says, I changed my mind I dont want to mount it .. Well the captain from the bridge & mate who was down on the deck of this big sportfishing boat was ready to throw that guy overboard. When we finally arrived back at the dock a Miami newspaper journalist was there snapping pictures, it turned out to be a record catch.. What an experience !!

    Sometimes fish die. When they do, we eat them so don’t feel bad Nick. I bought some fresh Marlin steaks in Grand Cayman and cooked it on the grill. It was delicious. They eat it because they sell it in the grocery stores there. I understand the economics of it all. A great game fish is worth far more in the water than on a plate. It’s also an important food fish in many parts of the world. Beautiful fish, congratulations!

      @@lucapasch4426 people often release the really big catches of most fish because of a couple of reasons
      1. they are old and play bigs parts in the ecosystem and breed a lot .
      2. If they fish is over tired or stressed its more likely they will die when released
      3. Seldomly it happens (like in this video for example) where the fish will bite the bait and instead of it getting hooked close to their mouth they swallow the hook and you cant really take it out without killing them.
      4. also with some fishes the older they get, the worse they taste, usually you'd want to catch them just when they hit their mature size.
      5. its nice to release them so someone else can get a trophy catch and make memories, I've had friends whos have gone to the same lake and have caught the same fish 3 times because of the marking and scars on the fish.

    I think there’s more marlin in the keys at certain times than most people think, a lot of the people that run into one are using too small of tackle (usually mahi tackle) to land one. I’ve noticed a decent number caught in the last few years by guys who went out and targeted them with 50-80 wides in the keys, enough that a new marlin tournament is planned for south Florida next year.

    Once in a lifetime fish y’all. Awesome. Nothing wrong with harvesting that fish as long as it’s legal. Like you said, better than it dying anyway and feeding it to dang sharks

    • @jonttul
      @jonttul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know why you'd equate legal with right especially in the field of deep sea fishing where the law is mostly decades behind on reality. I'd rather have the also endangered sharks get a good meal out of an endangered fish than people.

      @bobh1208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brrr8904 You're a kook if you think that a "too healthy" shark population is bad for the fish population. Are the fish doing better in the Bahamas? Yep, and a "way too healthy" shark population is a key part of that. They have strong immune systems, and thus can prey on the most infection prone specimens of a species, which very much helps that stock stay robust (for millions of years). And, for what it's worth, every one involved in the catch in question is a sorry excuse for an angler, with no pride about how they do things.

    • @brrr8904
      @brrr8904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobh1208 you clearly don’t spend any time in our waters here in east coast Florida. Yes, sharks are amazing creatures that are necessary for a balanced ecosystem. However, when you have these so called “shark conservationists” off the south east coast of
      Florida who go out and profit off of these sharks by feeding them and getting them accustomed to human interaction, this creates changes in the sharks’ behavior. This is problematic for both humans and sharks. These sharks are more aggressive and have lost their fear of humans. These sharks have learned to follow boats and have very clearly associated humans with food. This is what I was referring to, I never once mentioned in my comment that sharks are bad for fish populations.

    • @bobh1208
      @bobh1208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brrr8904 Clearly you don't have much of a clue if you think I don't spend a "too healthy" amount of time in our waters. Then again, what sort of nonsense is "too healthy"?? The people who have too much trouble with sharks are anchored bait fishermen, who at too many spots condition fish (and sharks) to be welfare types, waiting for a free meal which they do not have to run down, with no regard for such behavior modification that they are causing, because it makes the fish lamer and lamer 'til they succumb to even their dorky rigs. If everybody would fish only lures (which you can make, can't make bait) instead of friggin electrics with chicken rigs and other loser gear, (including commercial guys, since most of the uncrusty ones know how to catch fish with lures and recreational gear better than most recreationals these days), they would catch only the most competitive fish, that there are enough of to make competitive, and things would stay better balanced, with less need for regulations other than closed spawning seasons. Or, you can just keep blaming the "behavior modification" messenger, next time one takes "your" fish. (Which, by the way, happens in plenty of the least fished parts of the Bahamas, without much behavior modification, cuz that's what sharks are there for, to eat the most defective fish before they can spawn... such as the ones lame enough to fall for "free" lunches.)
