@@Attmay I'm really grateful that you have preserved it though. This kind of cutting really bugs me, when you buy a DVD, you should have it all, if anything with additional scenes that weren't suitable for TV.
DarkWillUser that's true. But a lot of DVDs use the syndicated episodes instead of the full episodes that were originally aired. I've bought DVDs that were like that; instead of the episode being 24-25 minutes long (as they were in the original tv broadcast) I found some DVDs had the syndicated 22-minute episode) I protested because I don't like being ripped off. The video above with the missing scene is because TV stations will cut scenes when shows go into daily syndication to add more commercial time. And a lot of times, the companies that make DVDs will use the syndicated episodes - because they think everybody is too stupid to notice
I remember reading somewhere that certain episodes seen on the Season 5 DVD release were actually the syndicated edits, due to the original masters being unfit for release (either missing or damaged). I'm guessing this is one of the syndicated edits.
+DarkWillUser Yet that same year THE SIMPSONS did a similar plotline that revolved that same assumption in the episode "Krusty Gets Busted." Sideshow Bob's small feet and lack of a pacemaker as he used the Kwik-E-Mart microwave safely gave him away for framing Krusty the Klown.
I thank you Attmay for sharing this. While it ended up on the cutting room floor, I appreciate its context, and the insight you have provided. This was a good Golden Girls scene that belonged in the storyline!
I am a huge GG fan, i watched it in Europe, dubbed, as a kid and ai loved it. After I moved to the US and watched it in its original language I fell in love even more, great job, great writing, great acting. I wish ai had th chance t meet them. Rest n peace girls.
This ties everything together! I had no idea - and it all makes so much more sense now. Plus, they are one of the few shows to keep the continuity of no microwave throughout the series, and all for lines that were cut out!
Almost, in the next episode, "An illegitimate Concern" at 5:18 it can be clearly seen behind Dorothy even though it was gone by the end of the previous episode, the one this cuts come from. I have checked a few episodes after the one I mentioned but haven't seen it again. In any case, thanks very much for uploading them, it was fun to find out Sofia made sense.
Yes, and a terrible irony of sorts that Rue died of not 1, but 2 strokes, and this was about a pacemaker. And, that using the microwave could cause her demise. I noticed the absence of the microwave , but never gave it much thought; nice job on bringing things into perspective. R.I.P. Dearest Rue.
Thank you for posting this! Being a HUGE fan of the show (I got to meet the ladies as a writer of the show was a mentor of mine and Bea was a reason I went into comedy) I always noticed any time a cut was made, and sometimes it was incredible material! I just never got that! This was AWESOME!
Modern microwaves can no longer pose a danger of reprogramming a pacemaker. As I recall, when I was in nursing school they said it was rare, but possible. Oh, for the good ole days when we had only to worry about what " could put your eye out, turn your liver upside down and glue your stomach together".
Greetings! I just viewed this for the first time today!!! I am a Big Golden Girls fan. One of the shows my Mom and I would watch together and would roar with laughter especially when we both realised that Sophia Petrillo resembled my Nanna ( my Dads mom) which really added to our love of the show. I still watch reruns when ever I can and am about ready to start my DVD collections soon. Thank you for sharing this. Now every time I make microwave popcorn I'm yelling"Who's for popcorn!!!" Hahaha!!! Thank so much!!!
In addition to this deleted scene, I am aware of two more: In the season five episode about the president visiting, the DVD episode is missing a line from the security official wherein he referenced the house having four senior citizens and Blanche, in an attempt to feel younger, corrects him and says, “Three senior citizens.” The man reacts by saying something like, “Yeah, right.” In addition, season four has a missing scene. In the very last episode of season four when they contemplate selling the house and moving out, they cut a scene out right after Blanche receives a phone call from the prospective Asian buyer at the end of the episode. In the original airing, Dorothy yells at Sophia to come into the living room while Blanche takes the phone call, and Sophia responds by saying words to the effect of, “Wouldn’t it be easier to put a dog collar on me?” I remember seeing that scene years ago during a rerun on TV, but it’s missing from my season four DVD set.
I also remember a cut out line from the part 2 episode of Dorothy's wedding when Sophia comes out into the living room in her southern outfit. Dorothy asks "MA, where did you get that outfit?". Then Sophia says, "I bought it. 5 Halloweens it'll pay for itself" I also recall a scene in that episode where Dorothy walks out into the living room in her wedding dress that same episode, but it was cut out. I hadn't even known that scene existed. It sucks how so many scenes and lines are still cut out from this gem of a series.
Amazing. Even when this episode was first broadcasted in german television in 1993, the sequence is missing. I never got that line of Sophia "So, who has the popcorn?" (in german it was transladet in "Dann mach doch in der Mikrowelle Popcorn"). It didnt made any sense so I always thought it is one of Sophias weird jokes :-) Thanks for sharing this with us, Attmay!
I always thought Sophia asking "Who wants popcorn?" was totally out of place and never got why that was so funny. Thought it was kinda her way of changing the subject. Makes total since now and I get where all the laughter came from (though I don't find that to be funny, even though she was supposed to be joking I'm sure). Thanks for posting this.
Now if someone could find the missing scene from the break in episode that is incuded in the opening credits. I saw it first run but never saw it again and it's not included on the DVD.
I also remember the scene when blanche tries to save her old house from being demolished, she whips out hand cuffs and puts them on herself and the heater. Dorothy says "why do you have handcuffs?' and Blanche says" I always carry a pair"
there was always footage in credits that never made it to air. it's just bits they cut before broadcast day. and they don't exist anymore in the context of an episode.
Yesssss... in that scene Blanche is talking about a man with a hook....but I haven't seen that part since the 80's.... how about the box set a few years ago hoping that scene was in there but it wasn't
The language on this show is so tame, I can't believe they would need to "bleep" or dub anything. Especially when we have shows like Family Guy and South Park.
they cut the microwave scene but they leave in the popcorn joke, leaving viewers totally dumbfounded as to why the audience is pissing themselves. I would just put in both with a little message [for the people who believe every blessed thing they see on the idiot box] saying how this info is now incorrect.
Some people claim it was because that's not true, but apparently, it used to be true. I've seen prepackaged sandwiches in grocery stores in metal containers with warnings that say "safe to use in any microwave after 1980." It's plausible the girls believed it and that that microwave is a pre-1980 model, considering how the kitchen's color scheme feels like a holdover from the 1970s. Does anyone even know what brand of microwave it was? The low resolution of SD tape obscures any identifying marks. But of course, that still doesn't explain how a first season *Simpsons* episode could get away with building a whole episode's plotline (Krusty Gets Busted) around that same assumption when GG had to be cut. And also put that in the context of other Disney cuts over the years. Coco (RIP Charles Levin) was supposed to have more scenes in the pilot, but they got cut and who knows if they can ever be retrieved at all.
Attmay, since I was small I never understood why Sophia said, “Who’s up for popcorn”. I thought (once I got older/this age) it was because Blanche was being so melodramatic that it was like watching an aging Southern belle in a 30/40s/50s film, a la Gone With the Wind or Streetcar...THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!! Now if only someone could find that Missing Dutchman scene of The Golden Girls from the 8th episode “The Break In” where Blanche mimics cutting off her hand, which is seen in the theme song BUT never in the actual episode!!!
But in season 6, in "There Goes the Bride" part 1, Sophia sticks her head in the microwave when Dorothy tells her that Stan gave her an engagement ring
Also Dorothy and Stan were married for 38 years because Stan got Dorothy pregnant when they were in high school...BUT Michael and Kate were both in their twenties when they were portrayed.
+deputyseal409 There was a lot of this kind of thing where they dropped continuity in the show. For example, in one episode Blanche's middle name was Elizabeth (her initials spelled "bed"). In another episode, her "mammy" showed up and called her Blanche Marie. There are so many other examples of it. Still a very funny show, though.
This has a weird Mandela effect in it - see how Sofia says "Cup of Noodles" instead of "Cup Noodles" which is what is supposedly changed to, but we all remember it the way Sofia said it?
As a hardcore "Golden Girls" fan, I can't thank you enough! This is simply miraculous. Where did you get the missing footage from?? Better yet, how the hell did you even know that a random 30 seconds were cut to begin with?! It suddenly makes sense why Sophia's "Who's for popcorn?" line got such an uproarious reaction from the audience! Do you know of any other edits made to the episodes on DVD? Unfortunately, as I was only 4 when the show went into syndication, I've only seen whatever prints are shown in reruns and on the DVDs. "Beep Beep/Tom Tom" is indeed the shortest episode on the season 5 set, but "The Mangiacavallo Curse" is a close second, running only 22:50. Could that one be edited as well?
Julian Regis They also cut out a detrimental scene where Rose's blind sister comes to visit. As they are going through items to sell at their garage sale, Blanche appears wearing a wig and early 70s outfit and white go go boots and recalling fondly on her and George going out dancing and her wearing that outfit. It's not on the cd series released. Why? No one knows
I always look to see what they are in press releases, but I don't remember the microwave bit being on Lifetime when they aired the series back in the early 2000's. I'm guessing this was cut for syndication and when Disney got the rights to the series and must of never known about it.
Attmay Really, I thought Disney got it after it stopped airing on NBC. I only saw this show in reruns on Lifetime, and until the DVD's I didn't know how much was cut from each episode.
It was a Touchstone production from the start, unlike the earlier Witt/Thomas/Harris sitcoms "Soap" and "Benson" which they produced independently, then sold the syndication rights to Columbia.
I will think of this every time I eat popcorn going forward. . This is my most favorite show ever. I don’t think anything will ever match it. It had its own unique charm. On a different note; that was a cool old microwave. I would love to have one like it.
Usually scenes are cut from the DVD releases because of rights. In this case, they might have had to pay Goodwill or Cheez-Whiz royalties, or got permission, to publish just saying the name. It was a different world in the 80s, and on TV. Broadcasts weren't considered "published", just aired. Huge difference when it came to things like rights and royalties. On a side note, does anyone remember the episode where Dorothy says to Rose "KINDA pregnant? That's like being kinda Spanish!" Rose replies "Emilio Estevez is kinda Spanish". Rose line about Emilio isn't on DVD, nor is it on the reruns airing today. What's up with that?
The reason the scene was cut is because it is factually wrong. People with pacemakers do not need to avoid being around microwave ovens. It was one time true, but is no longer the case.
@@60gregma I agree 100%. I was just thinking of other legalities is all. Still, they could have left it in, or at least nowadays it would be ok. Back when they first cut out the scene there was still that "scare" and uncertainty about them as they were still rather new and not everyone had one yet. So sadly they cut it. The entire scene was setting up the joke for Sophia's line which now is just random.
Same here not to mention that the channels either pick the worst spots for commercials or ruin the mood by using different music cues. I remember when Blanche came to the realization that Big Daddy was dead, the music was very somber but they have replaced it with more lighthearted music on Hallmark.
Thank you for finding this and putting it on here. I don't know if this was cut from the reruns or from the DVD too. When I saw this episode on here (many moons ago), I noticed something was missing. I knew it had something to do with the microwave.
This is why it kills me to watch TV Land reruns. These shows seem to have been painstakingly put together, only to have what I can only imagine is a monkey at an editing machine interjecting a commercial virtually midsentence. Hallmark seems to be a bit more considerate, if not for the bleeping of those deadly curse words like butt and hooker.
I got all the seasons of the golden girls and I both all 7 season and it just brings back memories of me and my grandma what Hong the show my grandma past away a couple years ago that’s the reason why I love this show.
Also, scenes were cut from the episode, "The President's Coming, The President's Coming" Parts 1 & 2, as well. Very interesting to see that this was another episode that was cut. I don't understand why that is.
this scene should be downloaded in case YT takes it down. Very rare footage! I am upset because there was an original airing of Family Matters on TH-cam 4 years ago and before I could download it, stupid freaking copyright nazis took it down.
Actually what Blanche was talking about is completely common. The doctors often stop your heart to operate on a section that needs to be operated on. And oftentimes when that happens you Astral project to a different plane of consciousness. Of course for the pacemaker the heart should remain beating. It's possible that they may have hit a complication and had to temporarily stop the heart which caused her to have that experience. Also, the microwave is correct. It is too dangerous to use the machine if someone in the house has a pacemaker. And good luck with the TSA.
Okay, so that popcorn line makes more sense now, given the context. Still, no excuse cutting ANY scene from a DVD release. It's a given that only uncut shows are on DVD. Even the makers of the Cosby Show were forced to provide the first season uncut after a huge outcry over the use of edited episodes for the first season collection.

+DarkWillUser no I would say they cut the scene (among other scenes in other episodes) to add more commercial time
But they cut it for the DVD, according to this video. The DVD is commercial free.
Holy shit. It's so much funnier knowing the backstory. Thank you!
I am a huge GG fan, i watched it in Europe, dubbed, as a kid and ai loved it. After I moved to the US and watched it in its original language I fell in love even more, great job, great writing, great acting. I wish ai had th chance t meet them. Rest n peace girls.
wow! only just found this now in 2021 and it makes it make so much sense! thanks!
I had the same microwave growing up. I always got excited when it came on the screen. Hell, part of me still does. Favorite show ever!
Love the popcorn line even more and also floating from the ceiling with a whole mirror there...lmao...and a part of Blanche no one's ever seen.😭😭😭😂
Oh I remembered this as soon as Blanch said, "Where's my money old woman?"
My mother had a pacemaker for 20 years and I've got one now. We used the microwave every single day.
I remember back in the mid 80’s there being a warning about microwaves and pacemakers.
Modern microwaves can no longer pose a danger of reprogramming a pacemaker. As I recall, when I was in nursing school they said it was rare, but possible. Oh, for the good ole days when we had only to worry about what " could put your eye out, turn your liver upside down and glue your stomach together".
Golden girls is one of my all time favorite shows.
@@Supertron1 that scene is on my DVD.
I also remember a cut out line from the part 2 episode of Dorothy's wedding when Sophia comes out into the living room in her southern outfit. Dorothy asks "MA, where did you get that outfit?". Then Sophia says, "I bought it. 5 Halloweens it'll pay for itself"
I also recall a scene in that episode where Dorothy walks out into the living room in her wedding dress that same episode, but it was cut out.
I think that one wasn't cut by broadcasters, it never made it to the show..
there was always footage in credits that never made it to air. it's just bits they cut before broadcast day. and they don't exist anymore in the context of an episode.
Yesssss... in that scene Blanche is talking about a man with a hook....but I haven't seen that part since the 80's.... how about the box set a few years ago hoping that scene was in there but it wasn't
You should watch it on Hallmark sometime, it's edited all over the place.
The language on this show is so tame, I can't believe they would need to "bleep" or dub anything. Especially when we have shows like Family Guy and South Park.
ah yes the splenda sweet pure as a Mormon bride channel
Same on tvland. Heavily edited and scenes cut out, more commercials than show. Ugh
David Skinner they don’t edit scenes for “bad language”, but cut scenes to make room for more and more commercials .
Hulu shows complete episodes, but not these scenes
they cut the microwave scene but they leave in the popcorn joke, leaving viewers totally dumbfounded as to why the audience is pissing themselves. I would just put in both with a little message [for the people who believe every blessed thing they see on the idiot box] saying how this info is now incorrect.
Nice job, thank you for this. How silly it was all cut out, I wish it was all kept in, it's a funny sequence.
We had all of these DVD releases, never knew there was a missing scene here! But man, that makes sense!
Wow!!! I always wondered why Sophia randomly says “who’s for popcorn” I watch The GG everyday! Thank you!!!
They made me happy and I thank them
But in season 6, in "There Goes the Bride" part 1, Sophia sticks her head in the microwave when Dorothy tells her that Stan gave her an engagement ring
Also Dorothy and Stan were married for 38 years because Stan got Dorothy pregnant when they were in high school...BUT Michael and Kate were both in their twenties when they were portrayed.
+deputyseal409 They must've either gotten a new one or they changed their minds with Blanche's consent. (Is that the right word?)
+CJSayz2 Yes, but this was the mid 80s-early 90s. No one was exactly watching this for the flawless continuity ;)
+CJSayz2 I noticed that about the kids, too.
This has a weird Mandela effect in it - see how Sofia says "Cup of Noodles" instead of "Cup Noodles" which is what is supposedly changed to, but we all remember it the way Sofia said it?
It was known as Cup O' Noodles until 1993.
It must've been. Shows in that era always ran at least 24 minutes.
^ It's released on my DVD collection. I'm in Australia so that could be a reason why.
Julian Regis please watch my conspiracy theory on this show. On my channel!!!
Aimee Webber its called Alison Scott. Check it out for my conspiracy theories on this fabulous show!!
I would of never known that something was missing, You should be in charge if they ever re-release on DVD or Blu-ray.
For any TV show box set, check the running times. If there's an abnormally short one, there's usually a reason.
I always look to see what they are in press releases, but I don't remember the microwave bit being on Lifetime when they aired the series back in the early 2000's. I'm guessing this was cut for syndication and when Disney got the rights to the series and must of never known about it.
SignalsOverTheAir When it aired in local syndication, they cut it differently than Lifetime did.
Disney always owned it from day one.
If it was already funny, it's even funnier with the context. 🤣😂
Our girls might have left this earth physically, but they'll always be here. ❤
That is amazing!!! Oh they should have left it in there. The last line was so much better with the microwave reference!!!
Owning the dvds, I had noticed many parts ( no doubt edited for time ) missing from Lifetime and Hallmark reruns.
They should put this back into the show. It's 2017. I'd say majority of people know better.
It's 2021 now, and with what we know about Qanon now, I would have to wonder about that statement, unfortunately. 🤔
I loved this show..I miss these ladies..
Too funny! I love that whole scene and plot line! I wonder why they cut it out! :)
Also, scenes were cut from the episode, "The President's Coming, The President's Coming" Parts 1 & 2, as well. Very interesting to see that this was another episode that was cut. I don't understand why that is.
Thanks for making/posting this. I love this show
Nice find!! Thanks for the upload!
the golden girls are so amazing
On The Golden Girls DVDs, there are scenes in every single episode that never appeared in the syndicated television version.
I've noticed
Which was stupid because they could still have a microwave as long as Blanche wasn't in the room when it was being used.
Jim Colucci's book "Golden Girls Forever" brought me here.
They say the scene lasted 30 seconds but it actually lasted 2 minutes, 32 seconds.
WOW! Thank you so very much for posting this. I've never seen the cut footage before and now the "So, who's for popcorn" joke makes sense!
This seems to be a recurring theme in Disney history since the death of Walt.
Thank you for sharing this. Made me smile.
This is fascinating. I never knew!
this scene should be downloaded in case YT takes it down. Very rare footage! I am upset because there was an original airing of Family Matters on TH-cam 4 years ago and before I could download it, stupid freaking copyright nazis took it down.
+Stephen R awww...i loved Family Matters=/
Actually what Blanche was talking about is completely common. The doctors often stop your heart to operate on a section that needs to be operated on. And oftentimes when that happens you Astral project to a different plane of consciousness. Of course for the pacemaker the heart should remain beating. It's possible that they may have hit a complication and had to temporarily stop the heart which caused her to have that experience. Also, the microwave is correct. It is too dangerous to use the machine if someone in the house has a pacemaker. And good luck with the TSA.
There were a lot of newspaper articles in the late 70s and early 80s expressing concerns about this very issue.
The microwave or the Astral Project?
I gave you time to answer. What article are you talking about?
Thanks...can’t believe they cut that scene! Greatly appreciated!
Very well done! Makes perfect sense now! Thanks for sharing!
Always wondered why that line got a big laugh.
Fantastic...cut scenes..love em....tanx!...i njoyd
This scene was intact when I watched it on commercial-free Hulu last year.
I'm jealous
