First of all, this was a terrific demonstration of that little instrument. I’m a gigging pro with a weighted 88 key keyboard and a portable Hammond organ on top, but there have definitely been some gigs where this would have been just perfect. I’m seriously going to check it out. As a jazzer, I so loved the swinging quality of your improvisations. And I so want to give props to Mike - I’m sure you know this already, but you guys have terrific chemistry, staying out of each other‘s way, and turning a simple duo into more than that. And while I’m heaping on praise, I’ve heard about “ground news” for a while, but that’s another thing that your video has inspired me to look into. However, if this voice works for you as-is and you can find a way to easily re-create, there's no harm to your reface CP in using it. Apologies for our delay in responding." (Yamaha, 12 September 2018) Great video!
Ha! This reminds me of an early lesson I learned in web development, where I'd quickly put in some "reasonable" font or color or whatever, that I considered to be "temporary" just to test something, and it ends up in production because the client would be ok with it, even though it's not indicative of the final quality the rest of the team could achieve. Now what I do is use bright pink and comic sans for testing so that it's super obvious that it's just for testing.
Your enthusiasm for this keyboard makes me smile. As a blind keyboardist, I had the same experience you did when I found all of those keyboards on a cardboard rack in a music store about seven years ago, and I’m like finally a keyboard made for me with no screen that I can actually navigate and I bought the CP. But I actually ended up taking it back because the speakers on board were so crappy and I got another one and they were still crappy, but I’d fallen in love with it by then, and I like to take it to campfires and just play with another acoustic guitarist right with the onboard speakers on the keyboard. I also found the video on TH-cam that showed me how to get to that hidden piano sound and that’s my favorite sound on there that I probably use the most. But I just love it. I can’t believe they’re still making it. I put a guitar strap on it. I got the guitar strap attachment and I just strapped it around my hips so that I can keep it on my lap and play it with a sustained pedal And everything from Led Zeppelin to Grateful Dead Shakedown street with the wah. Stevie wonder higher ground. All kinds of stuff. I have great big fat fingers and I don’t mind the small keys. I just love that I could take it on the plane in the gator case I use little wireless transmitter and receiver, and I can sit out there in the bar and play with the band, it’s great.
This popped up on TH-cam today as a suggestion and I watched the whole video and loved it ❤ I’m a guitarist but love watching people playing different instruments and everyone is right in their comments, you have a lovely talking voice but a beautiful singing voice and your guitarist is a perfect accompaniment - people like him get overlooked as they’re not into distortion. Hi, Aimee. I’m a guitar player in Japan. I love your voice! For me, Your voice is so pleasant and comfortable, whether you are singing or just talking. Also your friend, guitar guy is so good. So relaxing music😊
NO WAY MAKE SCOTT!??!! He was one of my favorite teachers at fullerton college back in 2007. I can not believe he is sitting in a freaking cajón, the most iconic instrument from my country! This is too much of a coincidence. I am from Peru. Tell him Fraco, the kyboard player from Peru, says hello, please! P.S. I have been wanting to buy that keyboard for a lonnnnng time for these reasons exactly :D
Fantastic 'intro to Aimee', thank you! Great keyboard, you'd think if any variation had to be 'secret' it would be the Toy piano sound. We'll hope to catch one of your shows.
Love my Reface CP and CS. They’re beautifully made. It’s a lesson in pricing. When the series was introduced, each went for around $700. People didn’t get the idea of mini-keys and a board with just one focus, especially at that cost. But then Yamaha lowered the price to between $285-$350. And since then, they’ve been one of their bestsellers.
That was not the problem. Yamaha sat on them long enough for small format synths to become affordable. Then released them for those prices and people didn't want to spend that much on a one trick pony when they could get cheaper synths or workstations for the same price. If they released them in the beginning of the small format synths era, they would've sold well. They even had to repurpose some of the parts on the YC line.
@@fromt789 The price went up to $450 during Covid when there was a parts shortage. All of the refaces were scarce for a bit. Unfortunately, the price never went back down.
I have this thing - I love it! I've been taking it to community jazz band rehearsals when I don't want to bring my whole 88 key. Works well in a pinch! The rhodes and wurli sounds alone are almost worth the price of admission. And the fact that you can run it off AA batteries!!
What a brilliant duo/musicianship ! As a guitar player, I've learned a lot about comping, chords inversions and octave management on keyboard just by watching you play. If a talented musician like you can do all that stuff on that small thing, as a beginner on keyboard I should be able to play more simple things. It gave me a little boost that convinced me that it is the kind of "couch-keyboard" I need. Greetings from France !
Best thing I ever bought!! Glad it’s going to such great use by such a fantastic professional musician!! Love it so much I got the DX when it was 50% off. Love that so much I plan to eventually have the YC & CS Refaces. They’re incredible. But the CP is king. I’ve seen plenty of people say they’ve ended up playing it more than their e-pianos. I’m a Wurli girl too, and that’s my favorite on this.
As a keyboardist, I really enjoyed the excellent review, but your vocals what kept me watching and listening… your voice is SO freaking delicious! I subbed so I can hear more. Much respect, Aimee! 👏👍🙏
dunno how Aimee ended up in my feed, but I watched through the entire clip. she's cool. heck even the sponsor sounds cool. I have the Yamaha Reface YC and love it.
Love the vocals, perfect for the music/song genre of choice, especially the more jazz based works. Great duo. I wish I could come to watch you perform, great keyboard and duo with guitar. Cheers.
Congrats that finally one off these found you. I usually take mine with me in my backpack just because i can. With batteries and its built in speakers it even needs no cable.
I love my CP!I use it more than my synth for recording and also recently got the YC which literally blew my mind. Also your singing and piano skills are awesome!
The secret Grand Piano sound is pretty useful too. Turn it off, set the knob halfway between Toy and CP (takes a bit of balancing, but it will stay there) then turn it on. Works with the FX, is a pretty decent Yamaha sounding piano, and it's great for comping, though you do have to turn the unit off to get back to it if you switch out. There's a mod you can do to add a switch, but it still requires the unit to be turned off.
Definitely will keep this thing in mind Aimee, thanks. A guitarist who in recent years has divested from keyboards and practicing them, I think it might be nice to get back into them in a modest, convenient way. This thing might be perfect.
No kidding - having the toy piano be the 'easter egg' sound and the Clavinova piano sample on the knob makes a lot more sense for people who'd use this thing. Also, doing a Rhodes piano bass is like the Ray Manzarek approach. :)
Just stumbled upon this and absolutely loved it! I’m a music teacher and can definitely see myself using this in class to demo stuff and muck around with in my down time, 🎹🎹❤️. ! I love all Yamaha instruments anyway so getting one on these is a no brainer for me. Thanks for the awesome video and the free mini concert, you guys are just awesome together!
Nice, glad you found a solution Aimee. I to am too old to be hauling gear around, been there done that. I have a similar solution with a small midi controller and small MacBook, but your solution is even simpler.
Awesome video! I adore my Reface CP! Add a Decksaver and the keytar strap attachment and it just fits ANYWHERE. Years of go-anywhere guitarist envy, gone
I have all the Refaces and CP is my favorite. You should get the YC too though. It's quite unique and should pair with a guitar as well as a CP but also work better for some use cases with its infinite sustain. I got each of mine used / floor units at about 50% without issues.
You say Yamaha doesn't know you, but I think they know you very well and met a need in your music career. You sound amazing and this just embellishes your sound.
Great video, great performances by both of you, you have great phrasing when you sing, I am really getting into the old fender Rhodes/ Wurlitzer sound thanks for the review
Keys look real nice but how great is it to see you gave a heads up about GROUND NEWS. I did not check this yet but it is beautiful you are raising this topic from your piano channel, thank you so much!! It is inspiring!
I can see how much fun you have being challenged to work within the limited range of the keyboard, and yes, how nice to not have to lug all that gear back and forth to the gig. Beautiful "authentic" singing, as always.
if you want the organ and the Rhodes in a keyboard, you can get the Yamaha ck61. still light but sure bigger than the refaces... the CP and the YC "exist" both inside the CK61, which is amazing
Those Yamaha Reface synths/keyboards pack a powerful punch in a compact package. You and Mike sound great together! I have the YC61 which is fantastic and has all these sounds in addition to drawbar controllers and organ stuff. But for the size and sound quality, the Refaces are hard to beat.
@@chinmeysway I’ve played on and owned everything and I use it in the studio. I’m a studio player producer recording artist. This is one of my tools for live, writing on the go etc .
Aimee - try a Yamaha CK61. So light but the sound engine has the organ (with draw bars) and all the EP and piano patches and effects. Bag is a backpack. You could play on your lap too or small table. Full size keys. Its my fav Yamaha keyboard. Speakers and battery powered. Easy to travel. You would love it.

The instrument is cool... but it's YOU and YOUR VOICE that are AMAZING❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
She demos exactly that at the 5:30 mark when going through all the sounds.
In your hands, any instrument will be very musical. Congratulations. Thank you
aimee 👍🏻 you’re amazing, no one else could get the sounds out of that keyboard that you do ☝️
Didn't know Aimee was THAT funky🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome vid, will be sending to my brother who is a piano teacher. Very sympatico playing with guitar player! Very nice!
I thought I'd never use the toy piano setting either - but then I needed a bell sound for a Christmas gig and toy piano was perfect!
wow! you sound amazing thanks! for sharing you handle the bass parts great coming from a bass player you hold it down
I appreciate that!
I have been consistently shocked by how good those CPs sound. They pop up all over the place and every time they sound amazing and so responsive
Walking on the Moon interpretation is jaw dropping gorgeous!
Definitely will keep this thing in mind Aimee, thanks. A guitarist who in recent years has divested from keyboards and practicing them, I think it might be nice to get back into them in a modest, convenient way. This thing might be perfect.
It’s a “guy”, not a “thing.” 😂🙌🏼
Hi Aimee. I also have it and I love it. Especially as I travel for work, it’s easy to carry around and goes with me everywhere. ❤
No kidding - having the toy piano be the 'easter egg' sound and the Clavinova piano sample on the knob makes a lot more sense for people who'd use this thing.
Also, doing a Rhodes piano bass is like the Ray Manzarek approach. :)
Very refreshing and relaxing hearing you play and sing. 👍🎉👋 Might just go on the lookout for your "small guy"😉🎹👍 geeetz from Belgium 🇧🇪🍀✌️
Best possible ad for this Yamaha keyboard 🙂
thanks for the demo! You have a great voice and great pitch, too!
You guys sound REALLY GOOD!!!Live It .GREAT SINGING Amiee
I have all the Refaces and CP is my favorite. You should get the YC too though. It's quite unique and should pair with a guitar as well as a CP but also work better for some use cases with its infinite sustain. I got each of mine used / floor units at about 50% without issues.
You say Yamaha doesn't know you, but I think they know you very well and met a need in your music career. You sound amazing and this just embellishes your sound.
Great video, great performances by both of you, you have great phrasing when you sing, I am really getting into the old fender Rhodes/ Wurlitzer sound thanks for the review
I have all the four Refaces and they are pretty interesting, each one on its own kind of instrument. Love them! ❤
I can recommend the reface YC as well. Amazing organs in a small red box 😁
That’s definitely part of it, Dan! It’s fun to put limitations on yourself because it makes you find more creativity!
if you want the organ and the Rhodes in a keyboard, you can get the Yamaha ck61. still light but sure bigger than the refaces... the CP and the YC "exist" both inside the CK61, which is amazing
Those Yamaha Reface synths/keyboards pack a powerful punch in a compact package. You and Mike sound great together! I have the YC61 which is fantastic and has all these sounds in addition to drawbar controllers and organ stuff. But for the size and sound quality, the Refaces are hard to beat.
that piano patch is killer. What a find !!~ I sub'd ... Love what you do.
The Yamaha reface CP is one of the best keyboards I’ve ever purchased and it sounds incredible
how many have you played on tho. any old things it’s trying to emulate? not to sound all snuffy but kinda surprised it’s the best for someone
@@chinmeysway I’ve played on and owned everything and I use it in the studio. I’m a studio player producer recording artist. This is one of my tools for live, writing on the go etc .
such a warm sound it nails the Rhodes sound
For those wondering what song is she playing at 3:32, it's the theme song to the TV show Sanford and Son from the 1970s. Your welcome.
Mike plays beautifully ,love the tone of his guitar.
WOW!....What a beautiful, beautiful voice.......Thank You for sharing.
Cool video. I wouldn't have thought that so much could be done with such a tiny keyboard. Your video taught me a lot in such a short time.
Aimee, you rock !! The Sanford and Son’s theme was SO COOL!!!
The Chorus and Phaser effects sound the best used mildly on the Rhodes patches (think Steeley Dan's "Josie").
I have been looking for something a little smaller and more portable than my Roland FA08 and this looks like it would work well! Thanks for sharing!
you both play fantastic on your instruments beside your outstanding singing . I also have the CP And you presented me some new ideas THANK YOU
Aimee - try a Yamaha CK61. So light but the sound engine has the organ (with draw bars) and all the EP and piano patches and effects. Bag is a backpack. You could play on your lap too or small table. Full size keys. Its my fav Yamaha keyboard. Speakers and battery powered. Easy to travel. You would love it.
Hi, if it’s on a small table can you still hear speakers? (Aren’t they underneath?)
Seeing your video of this keyboard has me sold. It's on the wish list. Thank you!
Oh wow, I think I wanna get one of those, or even use your comping technique with my Casio ... this is just so sweet and mellow in so many nice ways. Thank you ! :)
You have a beautiful voice. Great video. Oh, Mike is a fabulous guitarist too. ❤
OMG what a voice, wowsers, they style of music from the good old world....... beautiful
OMG . . .. What a wonderful voice you have and such great keyboard player. Wish I lived in the US and could come and see you play. Thanks also for a great insight into that little keyboard, Christmas is coming LOL
Those little keyboards are stupidly handy and fun to use. I initially found them to be a bit too pricey for their feature sets, but over time I got 3 of them (except the CP incidentally) on various sales and I love them. BTW the YC version is so, so good - my favourite of the series.
Thing with all these Refaces is they sound great straight out of the box and you don’t have to tweak for hours!
