@@mattiasjansson733 While it's not surprising that Meshuggah's impressive musicianship and compositional skills would catch the ear of academics, the band themselves - none of whom had traditional musical training - took pains to demystify the perceived complexity of their music. "There is definitely more to our music than 4/4," Haake explained to the Miami New Times in 2008. "But the main thing is the 4/4 feel. For us, that's a very important aspect to it. It helps us in giving the music a certain amount of flow. You can actually - at least on a good night - get into a groove. If you want to translate it into being, 'here's this number of bars in 23/16 and this last part turns into 30 16th notes and starts over,' that's not how we perceive our music. It's just a matter of that last one flowing in an odd number over the 4/4 beat. Therefore, the 4/4 that we write and play around is the most important aspect. I usually play eighth notes on the hi-hat all the time, so everyone in the band can headbang."

The guitar tone is also similar, and thats becouse the style of meshuggah kind of founded a sub genre called Djent or some weird shit like that, wich is basically overabuse of palm mute. And for some reason the mayority of metal producers who want to have a heavy punchy palm mute use basically the same guitar tone.
This is kind of a headbanger. If you want something more interesting from them, "Nostrum" is an incredibly unique metal track with a lot of nuance, while still being technically impressive.
Hey ! If you liked this band, I HIGHLY advise you (and I can't stress this enough) to go give an ear to Car Bomb. It is a math core band heavily inspired by Meshuggah, in a more bizarre, innovative and disconstructed way than the later. Scattered Sprite would be my go-to if you want something really... well, I have no words, really go check them. If you want to have some fun go listen to The Sentinel, they made almost the entire song in the same pattern but with different notes and time signature, it would be surely interesting for you anyway.
xenogardien I’ll second this. Car Bomb is the next evolution of what Meshuggah started IMO, maybe hybridized with a little Dillinger and Deftones. Interestingly as many Djent bands that sprung up after Meshuggah got big, Car Bomb is the only band that gives me that “Meshuggah feeling”, no other way to describe it. It’s also even stranger just given that Car Bomb do NOT play in common time generally and Meshuggah almost always do, so structurally their music is really quite different.
glad you listened to meshuggah! most of their songs are in 4/4, but the rhythms underlying that 4 can be very, very intricate. most of the patterns resolve naturally to 4, but in some they add or subtract from the pattern to resolve. the snare is usually always 2 & 4, which means the drummer has to internalize all of the rhythms with the kick (usually) against the straight 2 & 4 - it's absolutely amazing. listeners who don't know much about polyrhythms etc. might only hear the basic 2 & 4 and think the song is straightforward. but learning the patterns underneath everything makes it insanely more complex. i love the vocals being longer phrases juxtaposed with the shorter syncopated patterns. a song i think that easily shows this concept is Do Not Look Down. you can take the intro as a basic odd time thing. but then that odd time is played under the 4/4 when the song kicks in and you'd have to learn how that pattern "morphs" around within the 4. it's amazing writing. it's a shame some people can't get over the vocals, but i think it's such an integral part of the music as a whole. as you said, powerful. i love meshuggah!
Loved it! Though im not a consistent listener of Meshuggah, i really enjoy listening to people digest the songs for me so that i get a more nuanced image of the songs.
Saw Meshuggah and had to drop a comment. Been loving your reactions/analysis so far so seeing my favorite band on here is a real treat. If you're interested in groovier tracks by them I recommend checking out New Millenium Cyanide Christ or Rational Gaze. Combustion and Do Not Look Down are more approachable too, imo. Thank you for the videos! Keep rockin!!
This is what I have been using to convert my friends! This vid not only has the lyrics, but it also dislplays the theme of the song quite well. The lyrics are what completely put them over another bands, as if they hadn't already done that by the Music alone hehe. Completely underrated. Omfg. I was up front too. I always feel I have to be up front, front row if possible. I love the energy. They blew me away, to say the least. I couldn't explain to myself why I loved it. I'm not even into this heavy music much. I'm slowly starting but the heaviest I heard before was Mastodon or Slipknot I guess. But this here? Wow. The grooves, the syncopation (didn't know this word before) and all while staying in 4/4 technically. It's amazing. Meshuggah have easily become one of my top 5 favorite bands ever. And the more I go back now, I love it even more. I take my time with music. I'm now with Chaosphere and Destroy Erase Improve.
I love picking apart music like you do, I play a lot of guitar and that's why I love metal because its complexity and unique riffage, and virtually every band is different
Grandmaster Tomas Haake on the drums! Gotta checkout "Bleed", or "Dancers to discordant System", or "Demiurge", or "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", or "Clockworks" or... you get it :'D it's all pure heaven
As an avid Meshuggah fan, I'm so happy that you immediately latched onto the percussion as the indication of where the beat is. There's so much metal out there, or metal-adjacent music, that isn't really "head-bangable", which is a huge detraction for me, but almost all of Meshuggah's music is.
One thing to note about Meshuggah is that the drummer never strays from that divining rod of tempo. In virtually every single song there's gonna be a cymbal or something in the background that you can nod your head to through the entire song.
Excellent video my friend! Highly recommend Demiurge as well as By The Ton. Both songs lean more towards a groove but very interesting things happening within that groove.
As said before, MESHUGGAH is literally tailored for bobbing your head along principal 4/4 and along that having the listener feel something truly beautiful happening all around one's perception of time with such delicate choice of notes to build up the atmosphere 💙💚💛💜

Gonna throw out a recommendation for Deathspell Omega - a lot of dissonance and technical guitars creating some of the most unique music out there. Kenose I is a big ask, but probably covers their sound most completely. Loving the videos man!
Meshuggah is absolutely amazing§!!! I love all the explanations you give to us laymen and the analytical eye you bring which is why I'd recommend some avant-garde metal like Kayo Dot (Choirs of the Eye and Hubardo are masterstrokes) or Gorguts (Obscura or Coloured Sands), I think those would really really pique your interest

Thanks Geebz ! Listening to Meshuggah 24/7 now thanks to your videos 🤘😆
This is kind of a headbanger. If you want something more interesting from them, "Nostrum" is an incredibly unique metal track with a lot of nuance, while still being technically impressive.
You must check out Dancers in a Discordant System. As a composer that is a fantastic Meshuggah song to analyze and listen to! Love the content!
So relieving that this isn't a reaction to Bleed
Loved it! Though im not a consistent listener of Meshuggah, i really enjoy listening to people digest the songs for me so that i get a more nuanced image of the songs.
anything off Koloss, to be honest. That album is a masterpiece and IMO possibly the greatest metal album ever written.
Straws. Pulled. At. Random. is one of their greatest tracks, especially that outro. What a ride!
Man love your reactions and insights, you need to react to Sepultura Dead Embryonic Cells, pretty sure you will love it cause is fucking 🔥
Great explanation! why I love their ambiance just impressive almost other worldly 🙌🏼🔥
The Meshuggah song I'd like to see you review most would be "I".
No one is ready for that
Just listening to it takes you on an out-of-body Astral tour.
This band man, this band... And no one talks about how good the lyrics are.
This is what I have been using to convert my friends! This vid not only has the lyrics, but it also dislplays the theme of the song quite well. The lyrics are what completely put them over another bands, as if they hadn't already done that by the Music alone hehe. Completely underrated.
EDIT: this below,is the "THIS" from the original comment - th-cam.com/video/fhVv8-6-Cd0/w-d-xo.html
@@panchoperfulcro8708 Word
Facts, honestly some of their best songs are made 100 times more awesome by great lyrics. Dancers, Do Not Look Down, Perpetual Black Second, this one, Lethargica... Oof, just what a band, honestly
@@AgainstTheeWickedlyMusic Lethargica is lovecraftian material, so good, so fucking goooooooood.
@@panchoperfulcro8708 100% agreed. Funnily enough, there's times in my study hall at school that I'll read Lovecraft while listening to Meshuggah. The rotation is normally Meshuggah, Morbid Angel, Revocation, Humanity's Last Breath, and sometimes some others, and it really causes a certain vibe hahah
There is almost no greater joy than watching someone try to "get" Meshuggah for the first time. Loving your channel man!
Tesseract..
I love this reaction you done a great job with this meshuggah is a lot to take in but you broke it down nicely lyrics and music 👍
Brother, please react to ”TesseracT - Of Mind: Exile”. Super groovy progressive track. I would love to see you counting to that track :’D
4:20 Exactly! Thats the beauty of many of their songs. Check out Clockworks too. Cheers
Recommend: "Relentless Mutation" by Archspire
Human Murmuration as well would be one to check out.
wow you really got into it when it started playing, great video
You should give Igorrr a try. Maybe the song Downgrade Desert.
Igorrr is dnb and band fusion. He wont really Know whats drummachine or drummer
@@deadhead2983 neither do i.
Great synopsis. I'm a Meshuggah fan and it's great to hear someone who understands music and it's power really appreciate the musicianship of this band.
if you listen to any other Meshuggah song, listen to Bleed.
And if you do, please check out the drumcam version of “Bleed”.
@@rmr5044 You speak the truth! All of your alternatives are superior.
How original...
@@rmr5044 so what? it's an incredible song that is a must listen.
@@complexdevice ha ha... yep, what we all need is another Bleed reaction to add to the other 5 million.
This video was great because Born In Dissonance is not Bleed. Ha. Imagine your first introduction to Meshuggah NOT being Bleed! It's a veritable miracle!
I remember seeing them I think in 2017. My only show ever (until they come next year. It's confirmed! Special London show they said!). I didn't know them much at all. But when I went and heard it.
Gotta do Opeth & Gojira now.
I love picking apart music like you do, I play a lot of guitar and that's why I love metal because its complexity and unique riffage, and virtually every band is different
Grandmaster Tomas Haake on the drums!
Gotta checkout "Bleed", or "Dancers to discordant System", or "Demiurge", or "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", or "Clockworks" or... you get it :'D
it's all pure heaven
React to Mr Bungle, anything off California
3:08 that long descending line of notes, it's such an obvious use of an extended range guitar, it's surprising it's not used more often. So yummy!
Throwing out Mick Gordon - BFG Division as something you should check out. \m/
As said before, MESHUGGAH is literally tailored for bobbing your head along principal 4/4 and along that having the listener feel something truly beautiful happening all around one's perception of time with such delicate choice of notes to build up the atmosphere 💙💚💛💜
Yay! Meshuggah! The founding fathers of Djent. I highly recommend checking out their other songs:
Bleed
Rational Gaze
Future Breed Machine
Clockworks
OR, if you want to try something REALLY OUT THERE, try their 21 minute track "I".
Keep up the great reactions!
6:19 your expression was perfect for that part hahaha ... "whoa hold on there.. the floors gone!"
While i find meshuggah's sound to get a bit dull after a while, no other band has managed to even come close to repeating it, so when your in the mood for meshuggah, nothing else will do
Like sushi their is no substitute but when you are done, you're done.
Bleed by Meshuggah is a must listen! Great reaction!
First place I surfed was in Maui at Kihei Cove. Beginner but grew up skateboarding. Live the thrill of those sports. Great video.
Fully agree on the hit-hat keeping the pulse clear and in a way that marks the divergences the groove and arrangement impart.
Choirs of the Eye is in my top five favorite albums. It’s so unique and emotionally intense from start to finish.
Hello, I'm so happy with your reactions because it's an objective point of view with every piece of art that people suggest you on the comments.
I really enjoy your perspective as a composer and how you defragment each request.
I'm a music lover since I have memory of bands as Pink Floyd, Queen, Gojira, Tool, Opeth, Soen and much more stuff like that. Also I'm a composer but I don't have a long trayectory. (that's not the point btw)
The 18th of December is my birthday and I wanna request if you can React to "Lucid Planet - Anamnesis".
It would be a great present to me and I know that you will love their compositions.
They are a really talented band from Australia and also I think that they don't have the recognizement that they deserve.
Sorry by my language, but it's not my native.
Cheers from Chile and keep doing what you are doing man, I hope that in your life every step that you take means personal grownment for you :)
Thank you!
Fascinating! Great format
Animals as leaders - CAFO
Amazingly skilled musicians. Instrumental music gets me going and seeing you react to this song, or and other AAL, song would make my day.
Subbing because I like your take on the poly rhythms.
Hope you can do more meshuggah
