What boggles my mind is how he not only writes such poetic lyrics, but also ones that are so creative, that really paint a weird, vivid picture when English isn't even his native tongue. Btw the drummer is the lyricist for the most part in Meshuggah IIRC, Tomas Haake.
And then on top of that, the mathematical creativity at play with the polymetric rhythms that are layered and constructed in such a way that is both simple and complex simultaneously. Just utterly astounding as a whole
Meshuggah, also known as "where's the 1?" Actually most of their stuff is in 4/4, they just dance around with the off beats like no one else I think I didn't love this song when I first heard it, but after like 4 or 5 times something clicked and now I'm addicted to it. Most of their discography is like that, and it becomes very meditative once you're tuned in to the tunes.
I had a hard time with them at first, my friend got Nothing and we would listen to it while playing Need For Speed Hot Pursuit on the original xbox. It was so weird at first and I remember thinking it was too repetitive but after listening to the whole album a dozen times in the background over and over one day it finally clicked I guess. I'm like wait, this is actually insane now that I really listen, and I've been a fan ever since.
Meshuggah are one of those bands whose songs get better every time you listen. I'd highly recommend reacting to Straws Pulled at Random next, it's one of their best imo!
Came back to say I’ve shared this reaction quite a few times. It’s one of the best Mesh reactions I’ve ever seen. “That feeling when you know you’re in trouble...”. 😭 Great stuff. Reminds me of my first listen to them over two decades ago.
I heard the word "meshuggah" used by a character in Borderlands 3 (the Danny Devito looking dude). I think it means "crazy" in Yiddish. "Don't make me go meshugga in this bitch!"
Yes it is about the feeling of revenge but I also love the dual meaning of that and the physical sound they are USING to produce that feeling. The subharmonics and chords shuddering and vibrating as the guitar sounds twist around and chug giving you that absolute sinister heaviness you feel. It truly is a sonic declaration of spite.
Imagine seeing them live, that heaviness manifestings things inside your soul, your core, it takes it.. shows it to you, crush it and break it, then leave it in your care after the show to heal.
My first time on your channel. Like the way you break stuff down. You got another subscriber. Meshuggah is by far one of the heaviest bands out there, and were heavy before Gojira was an impure thought. Going to see them in Cleveland, March 2022, already have the tickets and can't wait.
Marten contributes a lot of exceptional lyrics too. Jens doesn't write too many lyrics, but when he does, they are on par with Tomas and Marten's. At least IMO
Some find this song repetitive, boring, the vocals grating. But I don't care, I freaking love it. The groove and simple melody at the instrumental break always gets me. It's basically the final part, with just bass, drums and lead guitar.
that Stank face speaks for itself. Meshuggah great, and im pretty sure they where one of the original groups that pioneered Djent music. Also just because you mentioned about your earbuds, ive found that a good pair of noise cancelling headphones like Sehnnheiser or AKG really improve listening. i use AKG for music production at present
ah fair enough, they are popular for a reason. the ones i recommended have some in ear stuff also, really good quality as well, if you ever feel to upgrade
I’ve followed Meshuggah since ‘99. I can assure you that they spawned what you know of as djent...but they’d never take ownership of it. They are Meshuggah, and everyone else borrows/steals from them. It’s inevitable. They are one of the most influential bands (not metal, I mean bands...) of all time.
Great reaction, most listeners of music disregard lyrics and just jam out You should try some more songs from Meshuggah, you may appreciate it 🤘 Suggestions - Rational Gaze & Dancers to a Discordant System
😂 it's in 4/4, snare is on the 3. It cracks me up when people think its some odd time signatures all the time. In multiple interviews , Tomas Haake always says it's 4/4 with everything they do. And most of the polyrhythm stuff underneath always falls on 4. Their early stuff from the 90s is more expensive on different polyrhythms and progressive song structures. But now from the album "Nothing" and to present, they use 8 string guitars and groove a lil more. Like a good example is to check out the 90s live videos... they moved around allot more but still kept the pulse going bc of the time meters. But now if you watch them live on stage, they all just stand and head bob to the 4/4 the entire time. 😂 like... literally going to the beat. But yet people will say what time signatures are these??? 😂 just loom at the head bobs. They're literally showing you how to catch the beat.
Mannn. Awesome review, instant follow. PLEASE listen/react to Meshuggah - Dancers to a Discordant System. It is Meshuggahs Magnum Opus in terms of heavy, technicality but for sure lyrically. The deepest lyrics to any song. You’d make every meshuggah fan-boys day!
@@SpiritofPoison Ok, "most" . He use to write the drum tracks first. You can ask him yourself, or watch it here on youtube when he explains the process. He writes vocals to be a instrument complementing the drums. No he dont come up with the riffs..
I love seeing someone geek out about the lyrics. I can recommend a song by meshuggah Called Dancers to a Discordent System, and make sure to have a lyrics video 🖖🤟
I would count Catch-Thirtythree as a single, because it’s one huge song split into multiple parts, but I think that 47 minutes is probably too long for a reaction
I love it so much and I love when people get and understand this music well done bro good video iv subscribed check out like bands Korn or foo fighters or some slayer or if you think your ready some cannibal corpse
Try out "Clockwise"! THIS are really crazy time signatures! But - oh so breautiful! ( eh, not his voice... but I don`t have to tell you THAT, have I? ) 😁🤘
Gotta say dave! That sounded horrible... this is the 1st experience I have actually had! It seems like I got through something horrible with someone on you tube ... but I enjoyed every minute of it... fu;,%*, weird.
When you say "meshuga" what you are saying is "crazy" in hebrew.... "meshuggah"... maybe their version of that term... they are pronounced the same... I assume! Regardless it fits...lol... yet I'd hate to say its evil, rather than just pointing it out... brilliant tho... future breed machine, humilaliive, erroneous manipilation... off of contradictions collapse... and "we'll never see the day" outro gives me chills every time I hear it... real gems for me!
The heaviest, and blatantly said the sickest stuff ever in my eyes is "Infant Annihilator". And yes that band name is already as sick as can be and their songs live up to that! Something like "Three Bastards" is only disgusting, but something like "Blasphemian" is worse... Good musicians, really good ones, but stuff to give you nightmares!
Hey I'm not a Metallica fan, but they are heavy. They're thrash metal. Yes Meshuggah, Gojira, & many more extreme metal bands are much much heavier than Metallica, but saying Metallica isn't heavy at all is just going way too far.
"It's so heavy you can chew it" my guy, what an apt description of the feeling this evokes
Ayyyy! Finally! Someone who analyzes Meshuggah's lyrics! I personally think their lyrics are vastly underrated. So, thanks for that!
They are up there with Floyd and Tool when it comes to lyrics
Fucken poetry is what it is
@@vishnuvijayan9910they’re above tool
Your face should be everyone's first reaction to Meshuggah
Truth! Haha the groove forces out the stank face
This!
Soooo true!!
Stank face from the first note. Well done!! Thanks for spending time on the lyrics.
Try “I am Colossus” off the same album. It sounds like a Titan playing a Suspension Bridge using a semi truck for a pick.
That is an astonishingly apt description
Best comment ever. Gone to listen to I am Colossus.
LMFAO I just suggested this same song and your description is way better than mine 🤣🖖.

Meshuggah are one of my favs, Destroy, Erase, Improve is a world class album
Meshuggah are one of those bands whose songs get better every time you listen. I'd highly recommend reacting to Straws Pulled at Random next, it's one of their best imo!
Every single meshuggah son has the same level of lyrical poetry if not higher and most people ignore the lyrics. It's sad
Came back to say I’ve shared this reaction quite a few times. It’s one of the best Mesh reactions I’ve ever seen. “That feeling when you know you’re in trouble...”. 😭 Great stuff. Reminds me of my first listen to them over two decades ago.
Peanut butter and glue is by far the best description of Meshuggah sound thickness \m/
Meshuggah... One of the few bands where every song gives you a face that looks like you just ate a lemon...
This is just my face when I listen Broken Cog for the first time

Yupp. That expression pretty much describes it all perfectly.
Something about your voice is so soothing and smooth it really contrasts with the music right after lol

"The most heaviest, poetic song I've ever heard" I've never read a more fitting description
You were not ready, for what this song do👀
I describe this as what is feels like to be a man. You feel power in rage and that's why the metal scene is so male dominated.
You know you're hearing a Southern boy when they mention the time signature and you thought they were talking about how the toms sound LOL
LMAO THE MOLASSES COMPARISON GAINED YOU A SUB!!
Such a great reaction... worth another watch. Thanks bro. Hail Shuggah \m/
People on Meshuggah: what's the time signature? My Head: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4...

I really enjoyed your reaction! Fun fact: Thomas Haake, the drummer of the band, is most of times the one who writes the lyrics. :)

I second this. Straws is so underrated for them.
