- In this video I test out a cheap bender that does not suck. ($210AUD inc shipping)Usually cheap benders will just kink the pipe and produce misshaped bends but this one actually works really well as it created a nice curve with minimal marking on the work piece, this complete bender with 7 die sets only cost half the price of a Jd2 or Speedwerx single size die set.I got this to do all the smaller sizes from 25mm down to 10mm and I plan on getting a Speedwerx bender as well to do the larger sizes.I am really happy with it and can recommend this bender I just wish there was an Australian made version.

Try mounting it vertical and bolting it to your work bench. I used 1/2" 8"X8" heavy angle, making it much more stable and accurate. I can also use my body weight to bend, rather than giving my work bench a tour of the shop. Good video.
Thats a good idea but I'm actually planning to customise it by making a new base and handle so the forming die moves instead of the work piece. Much like the way the speedwerx or JD2 bender operate.
Exactly! I watched a video of a homemade rebar bender where they were lifting one end of an 8' long 2x4 from the ground all the way up to make a 90 bend. Even horizontal would have been easier, but elevating/inverting the set-up would have let gravity do the work.

If I have to bend anything more than conduit, and needed one, I’d buy a bigger better tubing bender. Yes, this okay while you are young and fit to tackle the manual bender,BUT, as a person ages, so do the bones, muscles, and all the body parts that keep us alive. If you are blessed with a good back, take care of it, I didn’t, now I’m paying! DEARLY, VERY DEARLY!
I totally agree I have been in the trade for over 15 years and I definitely feel it. I am only planning on using this for making light tube frames and brackets in tube chassis so dont see myself using the 25mm die much on this bender because I am saving for a speedwerx or JD2 bender so I can do bigger and better projects and to get a die for that bender in 22.2mm tube was going to be over $400 so I decided to try this bender for half the price and can do all the small sizes so I will only need to get 2 or 3 expensive dies and the speedwerx and JD2 bender's can be converted to hydraulic to save my back in the future.
I hear yah bud. I had to have a back fusion in 2005 they put two steel rods into my back and fused them to my tailbone and four of my disks my disks were completely worn out, bone on bone, I had lost an inch in my height it was so bad. I had the fusion and fell off a ladder nine months after surgery so it basically didn't heal right. Now I'm bed ridden and for several years now. It's not the way to live, many times I'm very suicidal. Need fentanyl and hydromorphone to survive. Wish the hell I took care of my back throughout my life. Degenerate disk disease don't help either. If you ever need surgery get it done in Germany If I had my time back that is where I would've had it done.

I have the same bender, except it’s blue-green. Thanks for the tips. I was able to successfully make my first bend on 1”x.083” steel tube. I didn’t need a cheater bar, but had to put pressure on the free end of the pipe to assist it through the 90degree bend. Here’s a mounting tip: the base fits in a wide open 5” vise, if you remove the hard jaws. No welded adapter needed. Pivot the vise head, if you have that ability, so you are not fighting the friction clamps - they will not keep it from from swiveling under force as you pull on the handle.
glad the video helped. I would love to be able to mount it into my vice but my vice is mounted to my fabrication table that is on wheels so there is no way it would be able to put up enough resistance to make a bend. I am planning to mount it to the wall as soon as i can get some more time in the shed
Would you think mounting on a wall and pulling down would be a little easier. I'm looking to bend marine 1 inch stainless .065 wall. What are your thoughts. Thank you

I just bought one of these and I found it works great. I made up an L shaped steel post out of 50x50 box section and it slides into the tow bar receiver of my Jeep. Works a treat :) my only complaint is that I really need to be able to bend larger material :/
Also, if you pull on the handle and push on your work piece, it will bend very easily.
yeah I also purchased a speedwerx bender (Australian version of the JD2) to do the larger sizes, I got this one for all the smaller stuff because this bender with all its dies is cheaper than one small die for the speedwerx machine.
one day I'll build a more permanent stand for this machine and I will make sure it has room for a longer handle
@juscoz customs how much is the Speedworx machine? I'd love to be able to bend larger tube but everything is so bloody expensive in Australia! I'm only using it for home jobs, so I can't justify spending thousands :/

Thanks for making this video... But sorry pet peeve lmao pipe isn't tube and tube isn't pipe!!!! Lol the dies are very different for the two things sorry too many people don't realize that and waste money buying something that won't work properly for them... More so with larger pipe and tube . Been down that road ... Lol
But I got a little pipe bender just like this one and like it a lot so far but just picked it up for small projects because it was half the price of the die set for my large "real bender"
That is the exact reason I bought this bender because even if it sucked it was still only half the price of a single die for my "real" bender as you mentioned and I figured I could use the dies from this to make something that worked.
But it works surprisingly well so it will be getting used for making mini buggies for the kids probably a gokart or two and many more brackets when I get around to building my mid engine tube chassis car using the big bender that is both a tube and pipe bender depending on which die is fitted 😉
Hi there I am an old fart and I was wondering if you would consider a hydraulic cylinder to help us old guys and how would you connect I am bending 3/4 dia 16 ga stainless 90deg
well I was thinking about setting up my big bender with an air over hydraulic ram from an engine crane but I had not considered it for this bender but when I get around to customizing this little bender to make it better I'll see what I can do to add a ram

I got mine from ebay. The price generally depends on what currency you are using mine was $200 AUD so thats probably close to $150 USD
Shop around on ebay because some of them where listed for as much as $500 AUD.

I have built a miniature offroad buggy so far and it has turned out really good
I recently discovered I can cold bend pvc 1" sch 80 (25mm) over my knee. Any chance you have any 2" (50mm) sch80 pvc could try bending on that thing and tell me if it works. I'm an electrician and alot of my work is laying pvc pipe under ground for traffic signals and street lights. If this works like I think it could it would save me tons of time no longer heating the pipe. Thanks
Sorry for the late response I was going to see if I could find a bit of sch80 to test in my big bender because this little bender only goes up to 25mm. But I got distracted finding suspension parts for my AWD mini build so I can't answer your question

WD40 definitely. I am going to build a new base and handle for it to make it work better. Then look at getting rid of the handle but I will be upgrading my speedwerx bender with a ram first but might be able to make them both work with the one ram with a quick release system.

I have one of these, I modified the holder were the pipe slips through with a tab for it to hold against. The pipe now starts off straight and doesn't leave a mark. Cheers great work.
that's a good idea that I might have to implement when I finally get around to building a new base for mine that will make it bend in a totally different way than what it was designed to do (I'm hoping that it will work even better)

How did you get a 3 inch pipe fit in the space of a 2 inch former?

Great welds but holy crap you put a lot of heat into that metal. I weld for a living. Whenever I weld stainless steal they always inspect my heat affected zone... HAZ. That is the discoloration that radiatiates outwards from the weld. You're welding carbon steel and it's thick. The entire thing was black by the end. Too much heat really degrades the material. You had to speed up your video when you were welding which tells me that your travel speed is slow. Not bad, slow! My recommendation... turn up your machine to a higher amperage. What amperage??? I don't know. Personally, when at work I crank my machine to max amperage and control the heat with my foot pedal. But yeah you should turn up your amperage and weld faster if you're able to. Higher heat but a faster travel speed means less overall heat is going into the material. If you weld at a low amperage and go slowly... your welds will look nice because you have the time to linger, but the metal will be cooked. Another thing you can do if you cannot physically move faster is to use pulse settings on your machine if it has them. Pulsing switches between a higher and lower amperage based upon your settings that will also lower the overall heat... another advantage to pulsing is that it basically creates that stack of dimes appearance without the effort. It's like a cheat setting lol.
Thanks for the imput because you are correct, I use to weld for a living but now I just make youtube videos. The heat in stainless steel is a lot more important because when you cook stainless it really is cooked and loses all its good properties and becomes brittle.
As for speeding up the footage that is just done to keep the video interesting because having 10 minutes of dabbing rod would have 99% of viewers click away.
I can have a go at what you suggest with putting the machine at full power and pedaling it but 350 amps becomes a bit twitchy on the pedal when you only need about 50 of them. But I do something like that when on the AC but I only have it at 250 and use the pedal because 275 starts to do weird things to the alloy.
I don't generally use the pulse because it gets annoying turning it off every time I want to tack things so it doesn't get turned back on however it is good at annoying others in the workshop when there is a lot of alloy to weld that buzz really starts to get to some of them.
I looked into this year's ago but not much info out there, made another attempt and saw your vid. The baileigh unit in Canada is 1000 bucks and there's a similar knockoff for 300. I remember seeing the specs and they're meant for thin wall tube 18-22 gauge which a few years ago I couldn't find a supplier. What thickness wall have you tried since making your vid. Thanks.
Well the handle bars I made in this video where 2mm which I think is 14 gauge and it bent fine. (Would have been better with a longer handle) not sure how it would go with 3mm though at that point you would be testing the maximum strength of all the major parts such as the base, forming die, handle and your number 2 valve.
I found this machine worked great on the smaller sizes as long as the forming roller is not set to tight (covered in another video) and I even used it to make an offroad buggy (also covered in other videos) so I have found it to be a useful little bender and if I need something bigger then I have a speedwerx bender (aussie version of the Jd2) that can handle everything that this one can't.

Fair enough. It definitely needs a much longer handle than what is supplied but if your happy with a harbor freight tube kinker I hope you have more luck with it than I had
I weled a piece of pipe to the head of an old HF bender I decapitated. I bolt the head into a vice mounted to my tristand, slide a ~4ft pipe into that then "scissor" the bender handle towards the pipe which I brace with my body. Works fine and is mobile (the reason I made it to work with a tristand).

Does it bend anything between given thicknesses? I've got 20mm pipe to bend. So it's neither 19mm nor 22mm.
It might squeeze into the 19mm die but may require a new clamp to be made (its just a plate with 2 holes so simple enough) and a tight die means it will distort less but is a risk of breaking something so just be careful.
The 22mm die will probably allow the pipe to distort a bit but I dont know how much

Use your car trailer receiver
This wont work on my vehicle because it is a 4runner and has no boot but it might work on a sedan if you mount the machine at just the right angle so the pieces of steel being bent sticks out without hitting the car and the handle doesn't run into the car either.
I would rather not be doing metal work on the back of my car though because something will eventually get dented.
It appeared to have warped one side of the handle bar. I am a perfectionist and cannot tolerate any uneven bends. Why did that happen?
sorry for the late reply I only just found the message. the slight deformation that I got on these bends was because of the way I was setting up the guide roller.
basically I had it wound in to tight so the guide roller was becoming part of the forming process, when I had it a little loser the guide roller would do its job of guiding the material into the forming die so I was getting much better results.
I explain it all in the second mini bender video and I used this bender to make the full chassis on the mini buggy build so you can see if you think the new method gives more suitable results
I would rate your presentation as in "Turtle Mode" 12 minutes could have been done in 4 !!!!
Sometimes its not good to rush things. My wife would be disappointed if i did in 4 minutes what normally takes 45.

Not as good as my speedwerx bender but it does a good enough job on the smaller sizes so I did not have to buy a lot of very expensive dies for the big bender just to do small jobs.
I think it is perfect for hobbiest to get started with though due to its price and the fact it gives better bends than any hydraulic Chinese pipe kinker I have ever used.

True but as long as the wall thickness is no greater than 3mm this will bend them both

The range of tube size able to be formed on this device is worded in such a way that it may be misleading. 10 - 25 mm diameter range and 0.8 - 2.0 mm wall thickness range. Nowhere does it actually say that 25 mm diameter with 2.0 mm wall thickness can be formed. It doesn't say that you can't either, but I would suggest that these ranges are inter-related meaning that the smaller diameter tubes with maximum wall thickness are OK and the maximum diameter might be shaped in thinner wall thickness, say 1.6 mm. To be properly worded specifications, there would need to be a wall thickness range stated for each diameter. Having watched your video and reading the comments about breakages I'd be reluctant to try the maximums.
The test would be to send a broken unit back for a refund under warranty and see what they say.
That is a good point GD Livo I have used the 22.2mm die with a 2mm wall and that was quite hard to bend with the short handle that comes on the machine I think most of the breakages probably come from having a cheater bar attached and when you have the power from the extra leverage that's when you feel that you can bend anything and probably go beyond the 2mm limit that the dies have.
but the fact that it is all cheap cast iron breakages will happen

I was thinking about building a cruiser of some sort but I already have so many projects that need finishing like the mini buggy I built with this bender.
I'm impressed with that bender and what you achieved with it. I didn't see you use any lubricant on the bends .. was that "out of frame" stuff or did you just not bother for the trial.
No you are correct. I sent it in dry just to see what would happen...
and it worked really well.
There are ways that I believe the machine could be improved but that will require customization and that's fine with me. I just need to find time to do it.
You will find adding heat to the thicker wall stock will help exponentially. Not in the directions, but if you call the manufacturer, they will tell you to use heat to assist with bending.
Dont ask me how I know, but to large a cheater bar will bend or break the bender. 😂
🤣 yeah the design of the bender suggests that might happen with a cheater bar.
I don't really plan on bending anything much more than the 2mm wall of the steel that I bent in this video but if i do then heat will definitely help.
Well not in this machine anyway because I brought this one to just do the small parts and I have a speedwerx bender (aussie version of a jd2) to do all the larger stuff because each die for the big bender costs as much but usually more than this whole machine
@@juscozcustoms I got the round and square stock combo kit. I really struggled making 90 degree bends in 1"- 16ga wall square tube with a 4' cheater sleeved over the handle cold. Grease and heat made it bend like a completely different tool.

I actually had them mocked up on the drift trike. They looked awesome but considering the stock pitbike bars flex when turning I think the ape hangers would have bent on the first ride.

yes it is and it has been there for a long time.
I really like hammers but it is there for a different purpose that will become apparent in the near future.

Well I did a search after watching your video and I know this is probably not the same but for your viewers, there is a Chinese company called “Vevor” that makes that bender. It’s cheap but looks the same.
Also Woodward Fab makes a bit nicer one.
But either way, I think all of us watching this video and to you that made it are all on the quest of finding a decent bender besides the dies, I really don’t understand why they cost what they do.

honestly it has not done a lot of work.
Apart from the handle bars I made in this video I also made a mini offroad buggy out of a mobility scooter for my son to drive but I can say it still bends just as good, probably better actually after learning how to make it work its best.
however I am planning on making a new base and handle to use these dies in a different way that I hope will make an even better bender.

If you were to lube the tool and the material everything will work much better.
This bender does a good job even when going in dry so I will have to try that next time I have to bend something.

Hi I've just purchased a similar pipe bender. My question is how do you measure the bend angles on this one? Do you eyeball them, measure the angles during the bending or the bend distance? What about the backlash?
the simplest way to do it is to get a plastic protractor that is in a D shape and carefully cut the flat side out so it can fit on the forming die around the center pin then set the machine up with a piece of pipe in it and put pressure on the bending arm like you are going to bend the pipe then line up the protractor with the arm lined up at 0 deg and tape it to the forming die then release the pressure and pull it on again without bending the pipe and make sure it is at 0 deg then you will be ready to bend just look down the side of the arm at the protractor and you will be pretty close.
As for the spring back of the pipe it would usually be around 2 degree's so on your first piece go just past let it spring back and check it and once you have it worked out for that size of pipe it will be the same for the rest of your bends on that size pipe,
it will be slightly different if you change the wall thickness or pipe diameter so just check it on the first bend of each size you use and write it down somewhere so you don't have to work it out again on the next project.

It bends. I have that one. You need another 3ft on the end of the lever
That is the plan. I was limited on space where I had it setup but when I build the new mount next to my big bender it will be getting a much better handle.

did u try square tube with a piece of rod to push in the inside wall with it?
no I have not because I built another bender using a weight lifting plate that does a great job on smaller size of square steel and it only cost $20

I just tried 3/4" 16 ga (sq tube) with this thing trying to make a 3' half circle arch. I managed to get it done but it deformed the square on one edge. I might weld the rod to the form, I have 6 of these to make for a trailer roof.
it seems to bend ok without a rod tho for this 1.5 foot radius I'm trying to make, it's a little wonky but no worse than the other way

Hi, would it bend 16mm chromoly tube with 2.4mm wall?
It would be at the limit of the handle so you will need a longer handle but I have heard of others using longer handles and breaking the cast piece that holds the guide roller. I am still planning out a build to make a better version of this bender with a double sheer handle bracket and much better working capacity

Invest in a dial gauge for repeatable bends.
I have 2 of them but they don't work in the horizontal plane that the bender works in so they are not much help with this machine

Yeah. I just decided to send it in dry to see what would happen in the worst case scenario. But you are correct that we should always use lube

Goeff ... In your shopping, did you happen to see a bender with a motor? if so, what is the low end price for something like that? How about hydrolic? What is a low end price for that?
nothing that would be cheap and good speedwerx and jd2 both have an air over hydraulic around $2500aud but do not come with dies I will be getting a manual speedwerx bender for $900 and a die set for around $500 and anything that is 25mm - 1" or less i have all the sizes i need with this $210 bender
but most of my time shopping was spend looking at speedwerx and jd2 benders cross referencing both major Australian racing regulatory bodies (circuit and drag) to determine what material they require for there cages to be certified and talking to my local steel supply to see what sizes they can get in CDS.
that might be a hint of what i am looking towards doing in future projects

I see some that look identical (but blue) under the Vevor brand. How did yours hold up long term?
Yeah I have seen them in blue and light green but they probably all come from the same factory.
I only used it for the mini offroad buggy build and had no issues with it but it could use a new handle that is supported on both sides of the forming die and I was also thinking about making a new base as well. Similar to my speedwerx bender so it can be permanently mounted to the wall on a swing away mount to make it more convenient for 5 minute jobs.

A question I have though which nobody has really addressed is how do you know/reference yourself when doing multiple bends on a tube?
Like at 8:35, you rotate the tube ti get the second set of bends where you’d grab onto on a bike. Is there point you reference from on a bend? How do you know how much to rotate the tube when making the other side?

Put pressure on the tube at the same time as pulling the lever it might help
The best thing that i have found is to have a gap between the pipe and the guide roller before starting the bend. It stops the tube getting crushed on the outside of the bend.
a couple of dabs of grease would help

The difference between pipe and tube is about the way it is measured so I prefer to use tube as it is an exact outside dimension every time so it will seat in the former better.
this bender is only rated up to 2mm wall thickness but with the handle that is supplied I would not like to try to bend a 25mm with a 2mm wall.
I am going to use the dies from this set and make a new bender that should be much more capable tube bender.
Reckon it will do tight bends on 16mm by 1mm wall Titanium?
Personally I have never worked with Titanium but I didn't think it bent very well and would probably need a former that fits perfectly. This is more of a hobby grade machine that works fairly well. I plan on using it to make brackets and stuff on rollcages and maybe a gokart chassis or two but I honestly have no idea what it would do to Titanium.
If you have a go I would be interested to know what happens.

If you only need 2 bends it's probably cheaper just to buy them from someone who has already spent all the money on the special tools to bend Titanium.

Picked up the same bender a year ago, then all went to shite, really bought it for bending tubing for a side car frame and seat hoops for cafe bike frames. Thanks for the review, really like your content, budget builds are always the best, don't have to worry about them getting scratched, LOL !
awesome and I hope you can get back to it soon and when you do just remember to leave a gap between your work piece and the guide roller to get the best bends then it should work well for the bike parts you want to make.
as for being budget builds well I wish I had some sort of budget to build them so far its just been scraping together what parts I can but hopefully that will change soon.

Yeah I don't add music to the videos any more. As for the cheap bender I could get a better bend if I spent $250 on a single 25mm die for my $850 speedwerx bender but this does an acceptable job for $200 with its 8 different die sizes

I use a couple of benders. One similar to yours that I have attached to a platform in my workshop (my sewing projects go under this platform and storage on top) so I can direct the force downward towards the workshop floor. I don't have a table that could withstand the force nesessary for bending 22 or 25 mm stainless steel tubing. I also use a diy Bendarc type bender that is also mounted to the platform higher up on a wooden slab, in a way that the force is directed downward towards the floor. But even bending 22 mm tubing will stop me in my tracks for a close to 90 degree bend. So I attach a rope to the end of the extension pipe that goes over the tubing I want to bend. The rope has two pulleys and is attached to the same platform I mentioned. And with the help of the extra force pulleys provide it is much easie to get the desired result. Still hard work though.
Put grease on it and it bends smoother!

I did notice that the guide roller was not turning much.
Will this take 1" tube or is it a bit tight? I watched another video on this bender and the small 25mm wheel was cracking at the edges when doing stainless. Any problems when you have been using?
Without seeing the video where it broke I assume that would be from an incorrect setting on the guide roller.
If you have the guide roller set to tight it will crush the outside of the pipe but when using stainless it would make the tube oval instead of flattening the outside and becoming an oval it would put a lot of extra pressure on the die causing the edges to crack.
I have not had any problems with my bender since working out the crushing issue with the guide roller. basically set the roller to have a 3mm gap to the work piece before you start moving the handle. this way the roller is guiding or leading the steel into the die not forcing it in and this will prevent it from crushing the outside of the bend.

The best option is to go to a school and do a basic welding course where you will hopefully have a machine that works properly and an instructor that knows what they are doing.

I was looking at getting one of these but wasn't sure if it'd kink the tubing, or if the tube would need packed with sand or heated, etc
It does a good job for the price and can definitely improve small projects but if it is set up to tight then it can flatten the outside of the tube but I have done another video showing all the tricks that I have worked out to make the most of it.

How about silicone spray?
Silicone spray is not good if you want to TIG weld or paint the part afterwards MIG weld will work through the Silicone spray but just be a bit rough and paint will not stick to silicone at all so every speck will have to be cleaned off before paint.

Can it bend 1' thick walled tubing?
Not as it comes out of the box. It is only rated for 2mm and with a 1 inch pipe 2mm is the limit that I would try with the cast iron handle. I would want to build a new lever arm that has a brace going on either side of the die.
Your the second person this week to ask about 1 inch heavy wall pipe in this bender so I think I might try it out with a custom bender handle

Well thats one way to bend steel
you simply put a 250kg baby cumalong on the end of the tube and back to the table you have the bender attached to. no effort required. very easy to get repeatable accurate results ALSO rather that eye balling for flatness you simply put your digital gauge on the former and zero it out then put it on your tube. pretty suprised you dont know how to use a digital gauge , are you even a fabricator bro?
I have heard of these things breaking the cast part of the handle just from using a cheater bar so I don't think I'll be adding a come-along any time soon. Also I know how to use a digital gauge Its not difficult, but I have never needed to use one so I don't have one, might get one one day if I find a cheap one but there are always other ways to do things if you know how to be a fabricator.
@@juscozcustoms digital gauges are 30 bucks. not sure what you consider cheap but thats less than i pay for lunch. as for the cumalong, you arent using the cumalong for extra leverage. you are using it for accurate repeatable bends and far less effort. If anything, you are reducing loads by being able to add the force slowly and in a controlled manner. if the casting breaks bending a tube it was designed to bend, it wasnt the cumalongs fault. pretty basic stuff bro.
@@freelectron2029fair enough I thought you where talking about putting the come-along on the pipe handle not the piece being worked. I'm going to be building a new bender using these dies so I'll see how that goes and if it needs a come-along but it defiantly won't have the cast handle and base anymore. as for the digital gauge last time I looked at them was probably 15 years ago and they where over $100 back then so I didn't bother but If they are that cheap I might try one for the next build.

It is only rated to bend 25mm with a maximum 2mm wall and I was considering trying some 25mm with a 2.6mm wall for a project in the shedquarters but I might just use the Chinese pipe kinker for that one now.
I also have one that came apart 😂 It was the black tube between the two yellow pieces that gave up inside where the grub screw holds it. I welded it onto the roller wheel holder

I have not tried it yet but It should work fine for stainless, I would think 1.6mm wall thickness would be the limit. Also make sure that you leave a gap of 3mm between the pipe and the guide roller when you first put the pipe in so that it does not distort the pipe when bending, I cover this in another video on the bender "bender questions answered"

I wouldn't recommend it. It would probably break the cast handle or the forming die. Probably best to make something like my $20 bender but bigger with a stronger longer handle and solid mounted to something
What I’m trying to make is a round circle then weld 3 legs on it for a fire ring something I can cook from at a campfire?? Set a round kettle on it too?? Any good ideas??
