    I was lucky and grabbed one the Amazon benders on you recommendation after your video. I really appreciate your bringing it to our attention. It's everything you said it was. I also grabbed a couple of used dies off of Ebay for a reasonable price. I haven't finished setting it up, getting ready for winter here, but I am modeling it after JC Custom Metal Fab's on here. Thanks, a lot for you time and effort.

    I modified a Harbor Freight “Pipe kinker” by adding 1/4” plates on each side of the die. It bends BETTER than a JD2!
    I use it with DOM .120 1-3/4 and regular steel 1-5/8” .134 wall.
    I can do 90 degree bends without any issues.
    The plan was to use it until I could save money for a JD2, but honestly, it works so well that I gave up on buying a JD2. A friend has a top of the line JD2 and his face was priceless when he saw the bends that I did with my modified Harbor Freight one lol.

    Companies could make a killing down here in NZ or Aus with these benders, they want about 2.5k US without dies which puts it out of the game for most people and it sucks as you have to rely on others which just ups the cost of building even basic things and with added taxes on importing stuff its just crazy.

    I looked at some budget benders.
    How many of them are rated to bend mild steel tubing with 1.75 od and a minimum wall thickness of .118 per nhra? Not all of them. And that size you better be hitting the gym a lot and have a cheater bar 20 ft long to bend by hand.
    Even some of the larger table top units with a bottle jack don’t meet the requirement.
    I get if you are just building bumpers of light bars. But roll cages are about safety, not about being thrifty or cheap when your life may be saved by a good cage.

    • @TrailTime.
      @TrailTime.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely use the rulebook of the sanctioning body that you will be participating in. Bending .120 isn’t hard on a mechanical bender of this design. A 4’ leverage bar is more than enough for 1.750 x .120 DOM tubing on a mechanical bender.

    • @TrailTime.
      @TrailTime.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      2” .120 wall would be no problem. I’ve only been bending 1 3/4” DOM. Both .120 and .188 Wall thickness. The bender will handle 2” with the proper die.
      I use adjustable roller stands to support the tube during setup while confirming the tube is in plane. Once a bend starts there is plenty of force holding it during the bend. After a bend i position the roller stands under the new shape and release the die clamp. The engine stand has no problem holding the weight.

      @@TrailTime. That’s exactly what it is. The bushings aren’t an exact fit around the pin nor inside the hole they go in so there is so much slop that the arm hangs at a pretty decent slope as it sways through the bend.
      I added some plates and drilled the holes to be more exact around the pin, plus added some spacers to the mechanical arm to make it more tight. It’s a lot more tight and level in action than it was. I’m going to be making a lot of compound bends so I need it to be tight.

      @@RELAXnRENOVATE this is why I started the video talking about JD2. When a cheep knock off company is selling stuff quality control issues are always a problem. I may have gotten lucky with mine the clearance on the center pin are tight. I don’t know how long it will last (especially bending.188 wall) the Jd2 says their model 32 is good for up to 2” .250 Wall DOM.

      @@TrailTime. I thought about the effect a hydraulic ram would have on the stability of the swing arm. It seems like having it mounted stationary is what gives a normally sloppy sway arm a little more rigidity.
      That might be why you didn’t notice it since you discontinued the mechanical arm right away.
      Anyways…check out the grizzly bender. It’s the same as this 209 bender but with inexpensive die sets. That company offers a 1.5” 180 degree 4.5” radius for under $300.00. The other companies are around $500.00 for that specific die. Seems high quality so far. It’s worth checking out
