I have been collecting for over 20 years. Anything really from vintage, reasonable priced watches to high end haute horology. At the end of the day, all watches are not investments. The ones that make you money are very unattainable now for most collectors and it might not be valuable in the future where trends change and supply and demand switch (ie franck muller and ebel). Get into the hobby because you like watches. Buy what you like and not what other people like. You can't buy time but you can buy how you want to read it.

I too am a collector mid level and because I like them always lived watches since my first mechanical Timex watches in the mud 60s never wound them correctly so they never lasted long now own watches both Mechanical and Quartz given them to Family and friends as Gifts all vintage they love them just for the love

I thought this would be a bit of a throwaway video for someone that has been into watches for a while now but I loved your final point about inclusivity. There is far too much vitriol especially in online watch discussions that seems completely unwarranted to me. Someone else having different tastes does not hurt anyone. In fact I think it's a good thing because it breeds variety.

Yes! I'm into a few nerdy subcultures, and at least going by internet comments, the watch community is one of the worst. Right below Star Trek fans when it comes to elevating product admiration to the level of delusion. I'd love to see watch lovers take themselves and their hobby less seriously, and that includes less gatekeeping and more welcoming.

Also people tend to have this habit of casting their own budgets on to anyone and everyone else. “How can anyone pay double rrp for an oyster perpetual just because of a dial colour- they’re ruining the hobby/mad”
Well if you’re rich enough, an extra £5/10/20k is the equivalent of me (who isn’t that rich) deciding to pay £20 over for a limited swatch or g shock to avoid waiting a month.

Just as a generation of car lovers owe much of what they know to Top Gear, A large number of people owe what they know about watches to your videos. I can certainly see the knowledge gained within these videos in my own meager collection. Every video brings a smile even before clicking on the thumbnail. It's like an eggroll at your favorite Chinese restaurant. You know when you see it, that happiness lies within.

    • @nastang87xx

As a direct comparison, Watchfinder is quality knowledge and data points and Top Gear is knocking on the door of being a tabloid. Even Jeremy Clarkson himself admitted that the show intentionally got a fact or point wrong here and there to maintain entertainment value and European bias. Watchfinder content is extremely special AND right.

Egg roll? Is that the same as a spring roll here in Britain? Chinese food is good but go easy on the quantity as it might lower your sperm count. Of course, not the same can be said, for good watch making. 😂

This is why I collect vintage American pocket watches.
They've already done all their depreciation, they're overlooked, they still have a comparable level of finishing and quality as the higher end watches made today, the accuracy is still comparable after you service it, although the movements are larger you can still buy a case so you can use it on your wrist if you absolutely have to have it there (I wish they would make more of those, but I prefer to keep it stock). . .
. . . And lastly, even if they don't go up in value I don't care. I just think they're neat.

Your fleeting mention of Credor has opened my eyes to a whole other world of Japanese horological mastery. The GBLT999: Eichi “Wisdom II” - Platinum 950 Case with the Seiko Epson Corporation Shiojiri Plant edition power reserve placement on the back, freeing up all appreciation for the craftsmanship of the hand-painted 12 hour markers, and Credor logo, one by one on a dial made of pure white porcelain, reflecting the image of snow falling in Shinshu... AMAZING!

*Thank you for your frank honesty.*
As someone fairly new to this world, the most difficult thing for me is to deal with the "watch snobs" who imply that the most expensive watches are the best [ala Rolex] and belittle the more practical brands. I liken it to the people who are all in on Mercedes Benz and everything else is substandard.
There are many levels on which one can enjoy watches. For me it is the world of less than $1000 for new and up to $3 to $4000 for vintage. But none are for investment and none are to impress, they are simply for my pleasure and to mix and match with what I am wearing. That is fun and I do the same with sunglasses, as shallow as that seems.
It is nice that your channel embraces this notion of "different strokes for different folks" and engage with we who can only afford the Toyota Camerys of the watch world. It is nice to be treated as budding members of this community. And as a parting comment to the "watch snobs" Rolex was once just a tool instument, and Mercedes still makes German taxis.

I'd like the community to know that, try as I might, I cannot sell a watch that I've bought. Not a small point, as if you're the same you'll realize that no matter what the asking price does after your purchase, as you grow your collection it's going to cost you money. Period. So get used to the idea, make sure your kids know which ones they want, write it all down in your last will and testament.

Bizarrely I’m the complete opposite- for me, there’s so many great watches out there and I enjoy experiencing them. I don’t sell watches that were gifted to me but anything I buy is likely available for sale if the offer is reasonable let alone high. I’ve probably owned 100 in the last 5 years, like a slush fund that I occasionally add to.
Now I have settled down a bit but I hate the idea of loads of great watches sat there not being worn- I much prefer a good 2 watch collection (for me that’s a gifted Reverso duoface for most occasions and a Seiko mm300 for the odd occasions I don’t want to risk the JLC or when it wouldn’t suit).
At some point I’ll likely upgrade the Seiko to a new Omega/Tudor/Rolex beater diver but for now I’m happy.

I’ve always loved watches, from my first Waltham, almost 50 years ago. I’ve had many, and while I’ve had both mechanical and quartz, it wasn’t until a couple of months ago that my wife bought me, as an anniversary gift, a lovely Girard-Perregaux, a brand I knew tangentially, but not empirically, that I finally got a watch with a decent provenance. I love it, as much for the design and history, but even more for the smile it puts on my face every time I wear it and know why I have it.

Great points and excellent plea for courtesy towards one another. I would add one important point which is, “there is no such thing as an ‘exit’ or final watch to make you happy” if you are an enthusiast of increasingly higher horology. So don’t buy watches that only temporarily scratches an itch. It will not bring lasting satisfaction. Save, save, save, be patient, get on the lists, visit your dealer, develop relationships and IMO you will be happier in the long run as you acquire pieces over time that you truly want and it will allow you to have the funds ready and waiting when the calls come in to pick up your dream pieces.

You and some other watch youtubers have tought me that when buying a watch one should ask about the caliber of the watch. Knowing what caliber is inside a watch, one can learn a lot about the watch. My Seiko 5 Actus is 40 years old and i serviced it for the 1st time 1 year ago. The man who serviced it did a great job. It looks like new again. Accuracy around +10 seconds/day and it is a beauty to watch its sweeping second hand moving. My Citizen Eco-drive is a watch I trust and it will last for many many years. In my opinion, The Citizen Chronomaster is the dream watch. The Highest accuracy, eco drive movement, perpetual calendar, hour hand quickset independent adjustment, price around 2,000 euros. If citizen could make its lum to last more hours, it would be perfect. thnks for your videos.

There is no right or wrong. Oh how true this one is.
Earlier this week I received a Citizen in the post, bought off a local auction site. It's one of those 70's-defining tonneau shaped lugless cases with a reddish/brown waffle dial. Except it's not really a waffle dial, it just has cross hatching. But no matter, it's 50-odd years old with a ding or two and runs just fine, less than a minute a day and it makes me happy. I have dozens more from that era, and I likes 'em all. The wife thinks I'm mental because after all a $10 Casio F-91W keeps better time than any of them, but that's not the point.
Know what you like and buy it if you like it. Just don't mortgage the house to do it :-)

In the past pre 2008, most vintage/second hand watches were pretty good when they were about 70% of the current new ones. The idea that you could buy a new watch without take a loss was unheard off. Only over time some rare watches which were discontinued climbed in value. But over time was mostly >20 years. Will this time return, I think so when new watches can be replicated in China for 99% and only a NFT to prove the difference.

It’s absolutely wonderful to see the more upmarket products that are out there and I for one do not begrudge anyone who can afford them. Good luck to them I say, without an envious bone in my body. One thing I do practice is avoiding videos which are essentially influencer videos. I can make my mind up myself without being a follower of fashions!

I must constantly review this great advice. I was at a high luxury Hotel and spotted a woman looking at a Shinola watch. I wanted to save her from this terrible purchase, but I bit my lip and walked away.

For me the best tips have been: try a watch on before buying... don't rush this.. it really is a journey and you shouldn't buy a watch based on just photos, videos and other people's opinions... they help but ultimately you should buy what feels right and looks right on the wrist for YOU
Also don't be worried about changing your mind and tastes....
I've gone through 6 watches including 2 Omega (Speedy and first gen Aqua Terra) before finally settling on the Rolex OP 36mm which I hope to get in a few years
    But even that may change!
It really is a journey and you learn along the way.... it's very much an individual story with many twists and turns
I've learned that I would rather wait for my "perfect" watch instead of buying 5 for the same price and ticking the boxes that other people suggest... for example "I must have a diver, a GMT, a Chronograph ".... there are no rules and it's not a tick box exercise
If you want a collection of G Shocks, or just one Omega or a Tudor, or a hundred cheap seikos or that Daytona that you'll wait for 10 years for.....well that's down to you alone and enjoy!
I can't wait to get the 36mm OP, but I do also love my 5600e square g shock which is my only watch at the moment
Thank you got a very thoughtful and helpful vid 💚💚💚

My advice to someone new would be don't worry too much about resale value; you're going to get far more value out of a purchase YOU love.

I bought myself one of the modern Seiko Astrons. Most people I know who “know” watches thought this a deplorable choice for one of (largely) three reasons; (a) it’s quartz and for that money you could have had a mechanical, (b) it’s only branded Seiko and for that money you could have got a second hand Grand Seiko or [insert one of the cheaper Swiss brand]s and maybe made some/lost less money on it or (c) there are even more accurate radio assisted quartz’s you could have had for less money.
My answer to (a) and (c) was that I don’t care; it’s a beautiful (imo) well made watch that should last as long as I do as my daily wear and, good grief, it’s accurate enough. My answer to (b) is that was exactly the point; it draws no attention.
In conclusion, I quite agree with the sentiments in this video; there are enough watches to go round for everyone who wants one at every price range and fear of judgement need not play a part in anyone’s choice.

Interesting commentary, but I would like to see what specific suggestions WatchFinder recommends for great value/affordability in different categories. For example dive, dress, daily wear watches. It is hard to find an exceptional value given that speculators have driven prices into the stratosphere for the last several years. I look forward to WF’s picks.

By the way, I've had the Bliger for a year. Reset it once a month, error has ranged from 50-90 seconds, mostly 60, 36mm, glidelock clasp, sterile dial, but no lume worth the name.

Investment is certainly at the fore of my decision making process for a watch purchase. An emotive investment that is…quantified by how much does said watch pull on my heart strings? If it so happens that the watch holds its value well or even increases in value, then that’s simply icing on the cake!
