*Please read* !! The video omits a key step -- before you begin anything, TURN OFF THE WATER to your house/apartment first, and drain the faucets before proceeding! This may be obvious for those who are not beginners, but anyone can potentially forget. I've heard stories of people who created geysers of water and experienced geysers of embarrassment after forgetting to do this! Another tip before you begin is to cover your drain -- you are dealing with small objects that can slip away forever and bring your work to a screeching halt! If this comment helps even one person, it will be so worth it!
Thanks for posting this! Your explanation and video made this a snap on a 17 year old faucet! My girl thinks I’m a superhero because about 15 mins of work later there’s no more leak! Thanks brother! (P.S.- Love the background music!😎)
Delta faucet customer service will replace cartridges, seats, and springs for free if you email or call them. You just need to give them the model#, when it was originally installed, and tell them how long it’s been leaking. They have replaced all of our shower, bathtub, bathroom and kitchen sink faucet cartridges for free over the last few years, and all OEM😎👍
Spot on! Only thing I would add is to take note of the position of the cartridge when you pull it out from the base. I didn't. When I reinstalled, I had it flipped 180 degrees, resulting in the water being hot first and then cold when turned on. I had to take it all apart and flip it for the hot to be all the way to the left again. No big deal, as this was perhaps the easiest, cheapest home repair I have EVER done! So thankful to have found this video!!
I did this and it still leaked. It was a nice try. Not saying it doesn't work for most people. Just didn't get lucky this time for me. I'll be replacing the full cartridge. Great video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for this. I used it just to see how to replace the cartridge. You saved me a plumber bill and showed how to do it really simply. Appreciate it. (and for the record....thank you Home Depot for having the cartridge in stock)
This is an excellent video for various reasons. First, you said buy local. That's so true as my folks owned a department store for 25 years. My Dad kept it open 5 years longer than his CPA accountant recommended and lost money each of those last 5 years. But he kept it open as a community service for the small town/community I grew up in. Secondly, if you go to a local store, you can tell them the problem and they quite often can tell you the solution. I had to repair a dryer 2 times and both times he told me what I needed and how to do it. First time he had the part on inventory and second time he ordered the part for me. Even if it costs slightly more, you still save money versus having a professional make a house call which typically runs you $100 just to walk in the door. Thirdly, I'm working, as we speak, on an older Peerless shower/tub handle which is similar to your Delta and made by Delta. I saw that cartridge at Lowe's too for almost $40! That blew me away because right beside it was a complete replacement for this Delta which also includes 2 handles, 1 like yours & 1 round one so you can choose either type that matches your current bathroom setup, along with face plate, cartridge, seals, etc. And it comes in the finish you have or chrome for $39.97! So one could replace everything for the same price as 1 cartridge! It too was made by Danco. Finally, this is the second day I've been working on. It's older and uses a "ball stem" setup, which goes up and down. According to Delta, one is suppose to remove the white adjustment piece in front before unscrewing a similar piece like you did right at first. But it won't budge. There are 2 types of ball stem replacement parts but I don't know which one it is. So I bought a Danco "repair kit for Delta & Peerless", item #88103, which I believe is designed more for regular faucets but it has that little silver wrench I need to hopefully untighten the white ring. I believe it's the temperature regulator. The ball stem may be okay; who knows. It does have various seals along with 2 springs and 2 little seals like you used so I may luck out. I don't think the ball stem types even have a cartridge but have read they are connected to 3 brass pipes. So one has to be careful not to break the pipes, creating a huge behind the wall repair! Ironically, they say not to use a pipe wrench as it could break those pipes. And the wrench you used I just happened to see also and wish now I had purchased it. Oh; my Danco at Lowe's (9:30 at night) cost me $7.96 while the Delta brand wanted $19.99! I might also mention that little leak doesn't look like much. But I've used both a 1 gallon and 5 gallon bucket to collect the water while using a main drain opener which recommends not using any water for 24 hours for it to work. Well, I was collecting 1 gallon of water every 20 minutes! Didn't think it would be so much. That's 3 gallons of water every hour, times 24 = 72 gallons a day! Times 30 = 2,160 gallons a month!!!! That increases my water bill by 35%....35% more water usage charge, 35% more sewer usage charge, and 35% more taxes/fees so it's costing one more than they might realize, month after month, year after year. Sorry so long but thanks for an informative video. Hopefully my comments can also assist someone.
Thanks for posting this! I was fixing to get a plumber to fix this and I figured it wouldn’t hurt for me to try it myself! You saved me a lot of money! Thanks again!
I watched 10 videos until I came to yours...you saved me the $40 for a new cartridge! I used your advice and bought new seat/ springs set for $2.79 and it worked flawless! Thank you! If your ever in Indy I’ll buy you a beer or 3...! 🍺
I always just replaced the entire cartridge - this is a great video, thank you for making it. Also, the difference in price from the big brand chains to the local stores is very revealing. Thanks again.
Thank you!!!! Just bought a house and it was recently remodeled. Contacted delta and they sent a repair kit. Was hesitant to do it myself but after watching your video I gave it a go! And the seat and springs was the fix. Thank you much!!!!
I tried repairing the old cartridge but it still had a drip. I replaced the cartridge from Lowes, no drip. There is another video where the guy tells you what Delta cartridge you need where he says he has never had much luck rebuilding them. I paid $58 for a genuine Delta cartridge but my wife is HAPPY.
Did this and it’s fixed for a day. Now filling up buckets again with same single drip every few seconds. Shower related? Or something else to try?? Great vid. Thx.
Might need to try "blowing out" the pipes. That's what Delta recommended to me. Basically it's just where you take everything apart and open the water valve again and let it just flush out the system. Good luck!
Never had any trouble from Delta sending me a free cartridge ... took about a week but didn't pay a dime. Also sometimes just taking the handle off and putting a flyers inside the plastic stopper and turning to the right will close it off and stop leaking. You can turn the handle to off BUT if it's not centered, you might thing its off when it still needs to be seated to the right more. Saves you from taking everything off. This is especially true after putting in a new set and it still leaks.
I have had lots of trouble with Delta. You have to buy the cartridge at an approved store. I found this out when I purchased from Amazon. I had the receipt and a photo of the original part in the packaging with the receipt and they wouldn't honor their warranty because of where I purchased it.
Thank you for sharing. I plan to go to HD to get this part and attempt this repair. Looks like price is now $4.97 but a deal compared to a service call. Step #1 should be to turn off water to house? Pretty common sense but worth mentioning/repeating.
Oh my gosh I did it! It took a couple runs to the hardware store but by golly I did it. It was touch and go for a minute there. I even called the plumber and made an appointment for them to come out two weeks away… Then I realized I had the wrong Allen wrench size. It should’ve been 1/8 instead of 3 mm. Fraction of a difference made ALL the difference. No drip and no plumbing bill. Thank you so much! Gotta go cancel the plumber!
Thank you! I am going to try this tomorrow. My rental shower has been leaking for months and the landlord is not in the least bit concerned about it. The constant dripping annoys me!
Why did you put the valve grease on the outside threads? Looked like the grease might have worked better inside the valve on the surface where the rubber seats have to slide back and forth.
I've replaced my Delta washers and single shower handle for free. Twice so far. All I did was write to Delta and it was sent to me free of charge. Free. No shipping fee, no nothing. All the way to Hawaii. Great company.
Thanks for your step through of this process. I checked out your link for the seats and spring. Would you believe $1.00 in the USA and $15.44 on Amazon Canada!
Hi! Thank you very much for the video. Our shower was leaking again, and your suggestion was perfect, no more leaks and not having to buy a new one. Thanks!
Thank you for the vid! I’ll have to try this out. Our 3 showers have Delta valves and all leak! I wonder if this kit will be the same for our house built in 1999?
That's about the same time ours was updated. There's also a way that may work. It's a bit messier, but it's free. You might have dirt in the cartridge from the pipes. You can just open everything up, turn the water on, and blow out anything in the pipes and reinsert the cartridge. Sometimes that works for me.
Thanks I have watched a video from Delta and was ready to purchase the $60 part... But you've shown the part is easily opened and changing the rubber rings and spring is straightforward
Hope it helps. You can also reach out to Delta. They may send you the whole cartridge replacement for free. They're really good about things like that.
Thank you for posting this! I've swapped a lot of those cartridges out, and now I learned I may not have to go that far! The challenge I run into most often is removing the handle without snapping the brass stem off. Would that silicone grease help keep it from binding, or is it not recommended to use it there? Also, that's probably the happiest background music I've heard in a DIY video.
Thanks for the awesome video...my faucet is from 1989/1990...I figured I would have to replace the whole setup because it would be hard to find parts...but for $3.18 I was able to fix it right away. But when I took my springs and seats out you could see the spring thru the seat.
Recently had my shower renovated with this type of Delta Valve and have water leaks, sometimes very little to a consistent drip. Assuming the rings are bad? Gonna take it apart and apply some plumbers lube or something similar. Hope that works. Thanks
Thanks you make look fairly easy My brother said it would be to hard and says to call a plumber here they charge 100.00 per HR I will try first house is only 4 yrs old but still leaks
Thanks for this video. I’m having this leaking problem just a few weeks ago. And I said to myself, this is a waste of water. We just had our bathroom renovated last February 2020. Instead of me fixing myself this leak, I just texted the contractor who did it and also told them that once you turn the water it runs hot water without going all the way to the left. I thought they did this in purpose so that way the water is hot right away 😁....then I read some comments and found out that it is possible they installed it incorrectly. I also thought it’s a good thing and convenient to have hot water right away 😂. Thank you again for this video.
Wondering how long on avg. these springs/seats last? Have just inherited Delta shower faucets in the home we moved into. Hard water here and have already stripped the set screw trying to remove to get at the cartridge. I'm going to fix it this time around. Hoping I can avoid breaking the cartridge where it meets the handle, so I can just replace springs/seats. Will have to get a new set screw (hopefully they can be purchased?) at a minimum and will definitely use some plumbers grease/anti-seize on the new one.
Great video. I hope you're still responding to comments on it. I just got back from the store and bought the kit and grease that you suggested. I thought I was all set however, I can't seem to get a bite on the screw that holds the handle in place. Can you tell me what size Alan/Hex wrench it takes?
Yes, most definitely. I don't know what your setup is like, but I had to turn my water off at the main down by the street. You may have it that you can turn it off at a valve in your bathroom somewhere
Don't overlook the fact your water pressure regulator for your house may be defective and causing higher than normal pressure. When a second faucet in the house started to leak, I bought a water pressure gauge and checked the pressure at a outdoor hose valve. It was 90 psi. it should be 50 psi. I replaced the pressure regulator returning the pressure to 50 psi and the leak stopped.
You need to turn off the water somewhere. It may be that your house has a valve on your shower supply. Mine didn't, so I had to turn it off at the street. Hope this helps.
Well done. Unfortunately, the springs and seats didn't do the job for us. We had to get a whole new cartridge to stop the drips. Instead of waiting for the seats and springs being sent by Delta, we picked up a Danco kit at Lowe's. After installing them, the shower still dripped, although not as badly. Delta claims their brand-name seats and springs would have worked, but there's no way we are going to remove the new cartridge and put in the old one to find out. Delta fought reimbursing us for the cartridge (the shower is only 11 months old), but it looks like they might after all.
I've gotten lots of comments on dealing with Delta on this video as you can imagine. It's very much like dealing with most all big companies; it's pretty mixed. I've had folks that SWEAR that's the way to go, others with experiences more similar to yours. Good luck!
Hey guys, I have the same Delta cartridge (Blue/White). I tried putting new Danco seats & springs in. Still leaks. I am waiting on a new cartridge to arrive in the mail. I only hand tightened the bonnet cap, as I have seen several warnings not to over tighten the bonnet with a wrench, although it seems tightening the bonnet more would make for a tighter seal on the new seats, which is how the new springs/seats stop the leak. If the new cartridge does not stop the dripping, I'll try tightening the bonnet with a wrench, and see what happens, and post it here...
I'd suggest replacing the whole cartridge next. It may be that there is something clogging it not letting the seals close. The last thing I would suggest before you call an actual plumber is the most the most dramatic. I had a home builder friend of mine no mine tell me to take everything out open the valve and let water just blow out for a minute or 2. He said sometimes if you have an older home with older pipes there there are things in the pipe that clog the cartridge. I have to do that in my house about once every 6 to 8 months.
Need that same exact unit that's pictured in this video...however at HD and Lowes a full replacement is $53.00, but the repair kit (seats and washers) are only $2.51 at HD and Lowes. I live in California
Thanks for sharing. I need to work on a leaking Delta shower valve but am having difficulty taking out the handle. What size allen key did you use on yours?
I'm sorry, off the top of my head, I don't know. It's very small. I can check and get back with you. One issue may be that the handle has seized onto the cartridge.
If I have a brand new Delta Monitor cartridge that is slowly dripping from the showerhead, about a drip every 30 seconds, should I apply some plumbers grease to the seals (the blue portion)? I applied none and the cartridge (RP19804) didn't mention it.
I have a leaky shower head. Faucet is made by Delta. As per your advise I have to replace spring and washer and for that have to open handle but my handle screw is stripped. please advise how to open stripped screw. Thanks
That's going to be a tough one. If you can't get it off and the set screw is gone, that means that there are hard water deposits that are essentially welding it together. You can try something like CLR, but if that doesn't work, I'd call a plumber.
You have to be very careful because the cartridge is 2 pieces and if you force it off, it'll snap at the juncture. I always have to wiggle mine in multiple directions to loosen it up before I pull straight off.
Wiggle gently as you pull out straight. Sometimes it will take a lot of pulling. Maybe take the set screw all the way out to make sure it's out of the way (cover the drain as it will fall in if dropped).
Maybe a little bit of that plumbers grease on the part of the handle that inserts into the cartridge so not so tough to take off next time? Same goes for the set screw. Mine is now stripped and I'll likely have to drill it out and/or break the cartridge to get the handle off. Bad design, especially for hard water systems where it gets calcified/corroded.
Must be nice to have your Allen key seat nicely and have the screw not be gunked over and impossible to remove. About to take a sawzall to this thing and replace the entire mechanism
@@TXSuburbanHomestead Glad I saw this comment, I had trouble getting the screw out but CLR (put a few drops in the hole) did the trick. Can't believe this $4 fix worked. Thanks!
My bet is that it may not be seated into the opening well. There are the 2 little holes in the back. Sometimes when those aren't seated, it will leak. It may also be that you may just need a new cartridge. I have an older home and Delta told me that sometimes there's sediment in older pipes that will clog the actual cartridge. They recommend new cartridges or "blowing out" the pipes, which is essentially taking the cartridge out, opening up the valve and letting the water shoot out. Good luck and thanks for the comment!
Great video. Heads up though for people who think this will be this simple...my cartridge got stuck and broke off. It had to be drilled out and ripped out in pieces. There is a tool that can be used to lock into that cartridge to assist in pulling it out. May be easier than what was done on my end. If you're familiar with projects like this, i guess none of that would be a surprise. If this is the first time you attempted something like this, be prepared it may not be as simple as it looks.
Thanks for adding that. There is a tool that can help if the cartridge is stuck. Since the cartridge is a multi-piece unit, there is always the chance of it failing and breaking off in the socket.
Just put your handle back on and pull it out that way. But make sure the screw on rimg is off first. And just in case anyone wants to try, I stretched my springs back out. It didn't work... Just get the kit
100% right! I just replaced my delta shower cartridge today and took me 4-5 grueling hours...everything was stuck/seized starting from that little screw, bonnet brass and the cartridge itself I had to drilled it into pieces 😬! The worst thing I had to pay $52.00 + for delta rp 19804 ...danco price was $31.00 + but I was worried it may not work I don't wanna do all the hardship/hard work I put in already!!!!
Thanks for your great video. How do you find the model number for the faucet? I've been leaving in my cookie cutter home for the past 17 years now and I have no idea how to find the part number.
First off, thanks for watching & I'm glad it was of some help. On the model number, good luck... There really isn't much of a way to find it on the actual faucet itself, but Delta has a pretty good online tool that can help you narrow it down. It's the link below. However, I found that if I just took mine apart & took it to a local plumbing supply store, the were able to help me even without the model number. www.deltafaucet.com/service-parts
Damn! I ordered a new cartridge from Amazon and it arrives tomorrow. Checked my local Lowe's and they have over 10 Danco washer kits for $2.08 each. Think I'll pick one up and give it a try. I can always return the cartridge to Amazon.
Ok mine is leaking like this and when I take a shower and I pull knob for shower mode water still pours out the faucet and I barely get any water pressure out of shower head will this fix that

OMG yes it is! The big brand chain stores in my area have them going for ~$54 a pop. I hope our local suppliers have them cheaper.
Do I need to shut off the main water valve 🧐😂😂😂
Yes pls lol @@christopheralcosiba217
The little one saying he helped and the "yes you did, buddy!", very much a catchphrase in our home too, especially with DIYs! So sweet!
I replaced seats and springs in both of mine and stopped the leaks. I also put that grease on every seal/o ring I could find. Thank you.
Thank you for the comment. So happy to help!

That's about the same time ours was updated. There's also a way that may work. It's a bit messier, but it's free. You might have dirt in the cartridge from the pipes. You can just open everything up, turn the water on, and blow out anything in the pipes and reinsert the cartridge. Sometimes that works for me.
Thanks
I have watched a video from Delta and was ready to purchase the $60 part...
But you've shown the part is easily opened and changing the rubber rings and spring is straightforward
Hope it helps. You can also reach out to Delta. They may send you the whole cartridge replacement for free. They're really good about things like that.
Thank you for this. I just fixed mine using this video. I'd never done anything like it. I believe it's a 1/8 allen wrench for the handle.
So glad to be of some help. Thanks for the info on the Allen wrench!
Yes. I use the silicone grease on the knob before I reinstall everything. It really helps me long-term.
@@TXSuburbanHomestead thanks dude! It's kind of a job getting those handles off and I don't want to fight that battle more than once.
Thank you, sir!! Great step-by-step video!! Saved lots of money by following your advice.
Thanks for the awesome video...my faucet is from 1989/1990...I figured I would have to replace the whole setup because it would be hard to find parts...but for $3.18 I was able to fix it right away.
But when I took my springs and seats out you could see the spring thru the seat.
Michelle Welch that’s great! Glad I could help!!
Recently had my shower renovated with this type of Delta Valve and have water leaks, sometimes very little to a consistent drip. Assuming the rings are bad? Gonna take it apart and apply some plumbers lube or something similar. Hope that works. Thanks
Thanks you make look fairly easy
My brother said it would be to hard and says to call a plumber here they charge 100.00 per HR
I will try first house is only 4 yrs old but still leaks
What size allen wrench did you use?
Same!
Great advice. Replaced the seats and springs - resolved the issue. Wish there would have been a local plumbing store open on the weekend.
Show to be an 8/32 Allen wrench to remove the handle set BUT no one seems to stock that size Allen, any help with finding one? Thanks!
1/8 Allen. Corrosion may make it stubborn. Use WD 40 or vinegar
Do I need to shut water off before doing this repair? Thanks!
Great point.
Do I have to turn off the whole supply to do this job? Thanks
Good luck!
I've had your same experience - many times, even with seats and springs Delta sent me. Always needs a whole new cartridge.
Nice informative video, wow 6 years later that little seal package is $4. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I did this but it didn’t fix the faucet. Any suggestions?
What tool are they using to this off
Thank you for this! You inspired me to take this on!
In my experience, the grease won't really help with the seal because it's more of an anti-seize agent.
This was very helpful.
It was detailed and I was able to fix it as well. Thankyou
So very happy to help! Thanks for letting me know!!
Is it the same repair.
If it leaking out the handle instead of the faculty???
LMK
That's a great question. That may be an issue where you don't have a completely sealed cartridge or the brass fittings may be loose.
amazing! You dont have to turn the water off??? 😜
EASILY the most frequent question!!
I have a leaky shower head. Faucet is made by Delta. As per your advise I have to replace spring and washer and for that have to open handle but my handle screw is stripped. please advise how to open stripped screw.
Thanks
For a stripped screw, I'd recommend calling a plumber. The fix isn't simple and takes some tools/skill.
Thank you, I knew there had to be a way to replace the spring and seats with out replacing the entire assembly.
Happy to help!
Do you need to shut off the water before doing this?
Yes. Either at the faucet if you have valves there, or at the street.
You forgot to one thing. Tell all the DIYers to turn off the water.
how do you get that handell off if you dont have set screw in it
That's going to be a tough one. If you can't get it off and the set screw is gone, that means that there are hard water deposits that are essentially welding it together. You can try something like CLR, but if that doesn't work, I'd call a plumber.
Do you have to shut the main water off in basement?
Yes, you'll need to shut the water off somewhere. Mine is only at the street, but you may have it in the basement, or even valves in your bathroom.
Thank you for this video, this small i need to fix my delta monitor faucet.
How would you get the handle to be unstuck? After I took the screw off. Handle doesn’t wanna come off
You have to be very careful because the cartridge is 2 pieces and if you force it off, it'll snap at the juncture.
Great video---well done-- gonna try fix ours today. Hope I get lucky like you did. Good detail and fun music besides. Thanx for posting.
Are all the Delta single handle faucets pretty much the same as far as these parts are concerned?
Pretty much, their cartridges do differ somewhat based on year from what I can tell, but not a significant difference.
Must be nice to have your Allen key seat nicely and have the screw not be gunked over and impossible to remove. About to take a sawzall to this thing and replace the entire mechanism
The first time I did this, I had to soak the handle in CLR to get the set screw able to loosen up.
@@TXSuburbanHomestead Glad I saw this comment, I had trouble getting the screw out but CLR (put a few drops in the hole) did the trick. Can't believe this $4 fix worked. Thanks!
Thank you! Just got mine fixed today by watching your video.
what size allen wrench do you use? Ive tried everything but a 4mm because I cant find mine!
Something like a 9/32?
Do I need to turn off the water to the faucet before I do this?
Yes. You'll need to turn it off at the street if you don't have a valve on your line. I had to turn off at the street.
Do you need to turn off the water to the house to fix this?
It doesn't have to be at the house. We have valves at the shower, but at some point, the water needs to be turned off, yes.
Thanks, helps save money and reduce wastage of good parts.
Any idea why after replacing the cartridge my faucets still leaking
@@gina4808 honestly no. Maybe something behind the cartridge. Is call a plumber.
What size Allen wrench did you end up using? Thank you in advance.
Pretty sure it was a 5/64 or maybe a 1/8.
Thanks much for this money saving idea.
Phone Delta for lifetime warranty cartridge if made after 1995. What make of groove joint plier were you using?
Thanks! Took me 5 minutes and $2.
I got the entire value body, large o ring, handle, and packet of rubber sets & springs from delta for FREE!
did this without the grease and its still leaking. could this be the only other solution?
My bet is that it may not be seated into the opening well. There are the 2 little holes in the back. Sometimes when those aren't seated, it will leak. It may also be that you may just need a new cartridge. I have an older home and Delta told me that sometimes there's sediment in older pipes that will clog the actual cartridge. They recommend new cartridges or "blowing out" the pipes, which is essentially taking the cartridge out, opening up the valve and letting the water shoot out. Good luck and thanks for the comment!
@@TXSuburbanHomestead the house is only 2 years old
thumbs up. this was exactly my problem and they wanted to fix it for 150. it cost me about 3 dollars and 5 minutes.
So very glad to have helped!
Good information. Don’t know why you have so many haters on here talking nonsense.
Thanks. Glad you got the point of the video.
Do you need to shut the water supply off first?
Yes
That's a facinating musical number. Do you know the name?
This is well done and informative. Be careful with your audio levels, the music is much louder than the voice over.
Two things. First, this totally worked and saved me a $250 plumber appointment, so thank you. Second, the music was unbearable!! 😂
Noted on both 😂
Great video.
Thanks so much! Ours was even cheaper…like free b/c my husband remembered we had the sets and springs in our junk drawer.
Ok mine is leaking like this and when I take a shower and I pull knob for shower mode water still pours out the faucet and I barely get any water pressure out of shower head will this fix that
No, that is most likely an issue elsewhere in the mechanism. I'd call a plumber for that issue.
Fantastic! You saved me a crap load of money!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fix my leaky shower faucet for under $2, that's a lie, it cost me $2.07 at True Value for the parts. Thanks for saving me money!
So dang close though, right???
what size is the Allen wrench? thanks
Right around a 5/64 maybe?
