    Thanks for this! I felt like at the beginning you were saying that hot SHOULD come out first, opposite to what the trim piece indicates. But by about 4:20, it was clear that the objective is to get cold first. On a personal note, not only is my apartment shower set the wrong way, but I can't get any cold water out of the tub spout no matter how far I turn the handle. It's just all hot.

    brief and to the point. Best video on the subject. One thing I noticed. The triangular protrusions on opposite sides of your cartridge slide easily and all the way into corresponding triangular notches on the sides of the sleeve of the valve body. when I try to do the same the cartridge stops 1/8 " short of sliding into the triangular notches. When I install the threaded ring and tighten it I have to use plumbers pliers. Cannot turn the ring by hand. Also cannot get only hot water. It comes in mix with cold. I did turn the temperature adjuster fully now left now right, with Minimal difference.Reinstalled the old cartridge and got only hot or only cold or mix of the two. But can't keep the old cartridge. It leaks.

      @JaviAirwraps 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aren’t there always small shut offs for individual hot/cold supply’s right next to shower manifolds? Or is that only in apartment complexes that they do that? And of course it may be easier for a homeowner to shut off the building water supply than to mess with the shut offs right behind the showers wall (I.e. cutting into drywall), but it’s always a bigger pain to shut building water off and affect other residents than to just shut off the water directly at the shower manifold.

    • @stevengao8345

      @@JaviAirwraps yes, my concern is the same that if i shutoff the main water , other residents will complain. if there is the nearby one will be super. if remove the chrome circular plate, that shutoff may show up. but not 100% sure.

    I just had my home repipe but still kept old valve (shower) Porter Single-Handle 3-Spray Shower Faucet in Brushed Nickel for 6-2017, over 3 years. The product came with universal valve.
    I should have the plumbing company replace 2 of my bathroom showers with new valves but I thought I kept them since they nice. They also had to break some tiles around the shower valve area and covered it with bigger plate.
    They are working fine so far. Any concern I should have for the next few years? Hopefully they last 20+ years plus with no leak issue. How hard is it to fix if there is any leak? Thanks

    For anyone that has a limiting adapter on their version (just under the knob), you may not need to take the bonnet ring off. I went to do mine today because the hot and cold were reversed and the bonnet ring is essentially welded on due to old age and hard water corrosion. Tried heat. Tried vinegar. Tried WD40. Tried notching the ring and using a hammer and screwdriver. Nope. I almost admitted defeat and that I'd have to cut the bonnet ring off completely and replace it. As I was putting everything back together, it took me a few attempts to get the limiter adapter on before screwing the handle back on. I discovered there was a range of Off -> Hot -> Cold -> Off -> Cold -> Hot if I turned the handle across its full range. I simply set the limiter to catch on the Off -> Cold -> Hot range instead of where it was set previously of Off -> Hot -> Cold and bingo, it's all fixed.

The old one leaked about a gallon/day, so I switched the old one out for a new one, but it doesn't close the valve when put in right- only when put in backwards switching hot for cold. 2 critiques:
    1) If you are letting the hot water drain out of the system, turn off the water heater. If it's switched turn it off, otherwise, turn off the breaker or pull/unscrew the fuse. It MAY be unlikely that the level in the heater would get below the heating elements, but if it does, the elements can burn out. Don't forget to turn the water heater back on when you're done - BTDT!
    2) Before putting that sleeve back on the shower valve, close any taps you might have left open to drain the system, and turn the water back on and check for leaks at the shower valve. You'll be able to see them without the sleeve on. With the sleeve on, if it leaks, it might not show at the handle end of the sleeve, but trickle down the sleeve back behind the shower wall and you wouldn't know it.

    In some cases it can be even much simpler than this. If you (or someone before you) has removed the knob to clean it, the inner valve stem may be inadvertently turned 45° or 90°, and this will reverse the direction. If your valve is one that you pull to turn on and then turn to change the temperature, you can set the Hot-Cold position by removing the knob (usuallt pry off the cap gently, and remove one screw) then turn the inner valve 45° or 90° and replace the knob. No turning off the water, draining pipes or disassembling any sealed components.

    Anyone who has ever worked on one of these cartridges that's been in place for 10 or 20 years knows that the set screw on the handle isn't coming off without a fight. Figuring out how to beat corrosion with existing plumbing is the game, there is no "all you have to do is.....". Plan on having to use some combination of heat, penetrating solvents, vinegar and leverage. After 20 years in place, that little Allen key isn't long enough to provide the leverage needed to budge the set screw. But if you can hose clamp the Allen key to a long screwdriver or pipe, you will lengthen the tool to provide more leverage and hopefully get it out. Good luck!

    Problem 1
    When I pulled the cartridge, only the top part came out and the white part remained inside. Can I just leave the white part in and put the top part in the correct way with hot on the left?
    Problem 2
    I cannot reinstall the top part of the cartridge. I tried plumbers grease, wiggling, putting my entire weight on the cartridge, and it won't install. Base on video, it shouldn't be this hard; simple strong wiggling should remove/install the cartridge.
    Would the white part remaining in the valve be a clue as to why I can't install the top part?

      @Joseph C. Saponara I ended up getting that white part out. I ran string trimmer line around the back side of it twice and knotted it off. Then grabbed the knot with locking pliers and pulled on it till it came loose. It was a real PITA.

    Good video! I have a leaking Delta Shower faucet. My problem is, I can't seem to be able to break the hex nut free holding the handle on. Any tips on how to loosen it? I've sprayed some lubricant in the handle hole....hoping that might help. If you have any tips on how to get the handle off, I'd love to hear them!

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Might be stuck be mineral deposits If you can soak it in some vinegar that might help break things up. I would shutoff the main water shutoff so you could turn the handle upside down without the water running and then continue to pour / soak the hex nut in vinegar.

    Perhaps a stupid question but....my water shut off is outside near the curb and not as convenient as shut off inside, and every time I have to shut off the water I invariably get a bunch of small debris that tends to clog my faucets when I turn the first one back on. Can I skip the water shut off part? I'd do it anyway just to be sure, but I'm still asking the question??

    Sorry for a dumb question but would this be the same process for changing which way the handle rotates? Mind currently turns counter clock wise to turn on, and the replacement trim kit has engraving for turning clockwise to turn on. Wondering if I can change my current set up to work the other direction but still go off>cold>hot

    We had someone install a delta shower valve. When turning the handle, it doesn’t make its way all the way to the hot side causing a Luke warm water temp. The handle won’t turn any further than medium. Any idea what could be causing this?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely it is the temperature limiter which just needs to be adjusted to allow warmer water. This assuming you are able to get hot water at the sink and there isn't an issue with the water heater. This video will point you in the right direction even though the limiter you see might be slightly different. th-cam.com/video/Iu5knERDq3Y/w-d-xo.html
