Great playing from the entire quartet, but as a bassist I have to doff my cap to Young Heo for his incredible stamina in playing at that pace for nearly 12minutes! Double bass is a very physically demanding instrument!
so weird 30 years later, seeing the same people behind different faces in Kenton hall. Seen the paths of so many players, NT ...and especially NT jazz...is so deep in my heart. The best nerds anywhere.
Take it from an old guy who has played this song a thousand times with a thousand musicians, this version really swings, and gives me back some faith in Jazz which I have sadly feared for a while was going to disappear up it's own backside if the standards got any lower. Thanks to the band, for restoring my belief in hard swingin take no prisoners bop music, the ultimate way to clear a room when a party is over , leaving behind only the serious listeners. I shall look out for more of your stuff.
Don't forget us Brits, we killin it too! Sorry, on a phone (can't link) but please search youtube for Dave O' Higgins - Oleo I think Alex would enjoy playing with these guys. A loft session uk style!
What a terrific recital and a wonderful example of balanced and solid musicianship. Makes me appreciate the relentless contribution of bass, drums and piano to Alex's extraordinary solo.
OMG, Alex! You absolutely killed and smoked on this tune! Wow! Looking forward to hearing more about all of your current and future successes in jazz! Keep up the great work!
TheGIK: Han and Hahn :: Contemporary and Funky Jazz :: Classical and Standard Jazz, respectively. Alex Hahn is Parkeresque - Stitt-like, if you will. Oh, how he with the Band "burns" invincibly!
What an incredible set up of this ancient tune, even the melody was very cleverly redone in the outchorus...who is saying that this music is dead or history or museum....?it is very much alive, as Alex Hahn and his rhythm section made had proven on this occasion. Congratulation for a great performance individually as well in the ensemble.. Klaus-Werner Pusch
I love the people in the audience that don’t clap and have their arms crossed like they are God’s gift to the world and we are the humble servants! What is it with the music community! Relax you are at a concert! Great playing Alex!!!
Well, you could argue that the audience think that their playing is “God’s gift”. They are extremely talented at their craft, so maybe instead of letting loose to the beat they listen closely at a live ensemble as great as them.
This whole band was smoking I absolutely loved it all the way through keep up the great work Alex I love how on fire you are and you killed that version of Cherokee it is fantastic. You should put some more songs on your channel so that everyone can hear them.
I would love to have a copy of the concert the concert should be released on cd Alex do you want of my favorite saxophone players this is one of the best versions of Cherokee I have ever heard I absolutely love it you should do faster versions of songs like anthropology get happy I got rhythm and great standards like that. Keep up the good work
Kenny Garrett, Donald Harrison, Vincent Herrin, Braxton Cooke, the young lion... What has become of Christopher Holiday, alto saxophonist extraordinaire? And Justin Robinson? I am about to listen to Nelson Rangell's take on this said tune. Want to take a ride with me? Please do! Hahn is Organic Real Jazz.
@@wyndhl9465 Christopher Hollyday teaches and performs in San Diego. Before the pandemic, he was playing at the Panama 66 jam session weekly with Gilbert Castellanos. Just put out two new CDs too christopherhollyday.com
I am just some old unschooled guy who just plays sax as a hobby, and couldn't identify a tenth of the notes you were playing there, but that was really incredible!! Great stuff there, great stuff!!
Over 7,000 Views, thank you so much for listening/watching! I just released my debut album, check it out on CD Baby, iTunes, or Spotify! www.cdbaby.com/cd/thealexhahncrossing2
Thanks for the laugh Jeffery, In fact I ran a jazz club, and played bass in a piano trio, and would often call Ronnie Scott to book any stray cats that might want to fill in an extra gig at our place, that he would book for maybe a week at his club in Soho,London. Whenever I called and he didn't answer personally , he would rush to the phone after being told that Tony Williams wanted to speak to him. I became a standing joke at the place. Dear Tony Williams the drummer has been gone quite a while now, sadly missed for the genius that he was, and only two days ago, I heard that Alan Holdsworth died , who played with his band too. Tempus Fugit, and memories are all that are left of the great music that they made. Thanks for the comment , it made me laugh, and prompted me to play Alex's version once again with my breakfast here in Holland this morning. Bon Appetite !
No ,it was in the Isle of Man, but that was a long time ago, and the jazz scene has faded away over there now, young people used to come to all the concerts, but these days the music is cover versions of cover versions of chart music, and they struggle to fill a small room, except at TT time, when thirty thousand hairy arsed bikers gather there for the race week, and garage bands come out of garages to play rock and roll. Everyone shouts, and no-one listens anymore. I have played the Bimhuis though, and Dutch audiences are really ahead of the rest of masses in English speaking countries, they LIKE jazz !
+anthony williams I must be following you around.... I used to go every summer with my family to Port Erin, in the 60s Bimhuis was my fave spot in the early 80s. Han Bennink is still going strong I believe. Cheers pal
Check out" Jimmy Gets out of Jail "on TH-cam, and you'll see me with my family, after I paid Jimmy's fine. Also on the film " The Father, The Son, and The Talent. Great to have this exchange Nige.Keep in touch.
What happened to the video you had of this same presentation playing Tetragon? Love both vids and often came back to them when in need of renewed energy.
Five minutes forty five seconds of a piano solo is a bit excessive on a piece to showcase a saxophone player!...Sorry....I am an bitter and impatient old man!
Does the pianist ever 'mention' Cherokee? He seems technically gifted, but he doesn't seem to use the chord structure of Cherokee at all. When Alex Hahn comes on, you hear the tune and the changes immediately.
for Cherokee on Sax checkout Don byas, tubby hayes,canonball,bird...this sounds more like modern jazz and a bit stiff compared... still all good players esp p. b. d. on this tune
Sorry I just couldn't get into the piano soling. Hardly any reference to the original harmonic and melodic motifs and just a bit too self indulgent imo. Sax solo on the other hand was both original AND true to the original tune.. Good job!
What solo isn't self indulgent? Solos are meant to showcase the skills and show what the musician brings to the table, such an invalid criticism that says nothing "wahhhh you're not playing to my conventional standards of what jazz is you're too self indulgent" just a bunch of horse shit from people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
That was some seriously athletic BASS playing...wow! The ironman award goes to...YOUNG HEO Great HIT!!!
Great playing from the entire quartet, but as a bassist I have to doff my cap to Young Heo for his incredible stamina in playing at that pace for nearly 12minutes! Double bass is a very physically demanding instrument!
Incredible bass chops - I bet he has a hell of a handshake!
War Vandal bass chops 😂
I'd love a doublebassist like that in my quartet, really..
Who wouldnt??
Electric bass is usually more practical for gigging around, but nothing can perfectly replace the tone of a double bass
god damn Alex....takes balls as big as church bells to wait 6 minutes in to play a note and then lay THAT out there.......OMG

And Stefan Karlsson has a terrific harmonic and rhythmic touch also.
Young Heo is on fire! Hope to see more from him in the future
Great playing Alex. I'm sure Charlie stirred up there in KC, you are worthy.
LOVE THIS PIANO!!!
What a terrific recital and a wonderful example of balanced and solid musicianship. Makes me appreciate the relentless contribution of bass, drums and piano to Alex's extraordinary solo.
Alex you are already a great saxophonist. Keep it up! Mind and soul!
OMG, Alex! You absolutely killed and smoked on this tune! Wow! Looking forward to hearing more about all of your current and future successes in jazz! Keep up the great work!
nice nice work man!

Was your club Bim Huis, by any chance Anthony?
No ,it was in the Isle of Man, but that was a long time ago, and the jazz scene has faded away over there now, young people used to come to all the concerts, but these days the music is cover versions of cover versions of chart music, and they struggle to fill a small room, except at TT time, when thirty thousand hairy arsed bikers gather there for the race week, and garage bands come out of garages to play rock and roll. Awesome, nice tight piece!
What is your set-up?
I play on a Selmer Mark VI saxophone, Meyer 6M, Vandoren M/O Ligature, and Vandoren reeds. I now use a Meyer 7M mouthpiece!
you sound great how old are you?
How old are you?
Alex Hahn what is your saxophone and mouthpiece setup just curious?
looks like a mark vi and a ny Meyer just from observation
Alex sounds like the phenomenal Baptiste Herbin from France.
Hi Alex, Good job all the way! Please what is the scale from 6:30, did you change the tone centre or what? Please respond. Cheers.
+Bode Timothy That would be a lydian dominant chord (D7#11). With lots of approach notes thrown in!
Many thanks man. Will surelyrics give a trial
5:50
Just noticed that was Ed on drums haha
5:46 piano solo ends
poggers
Five minutes forty five seconds of a piano solo is a bit excessive on a piece to showcase a saxophone player!...Sorry....I am an bitter and impatient old man!
Garramedia Thanks for letting us know where to ff to!
My boy on keys killed it though
jazz is about all the players evenly...
Jesus !!
I wouldn't have a clue where we are in the chord sequence from what the pianist is playing.
reharmonization
.
Reminds me of 12 tone 'music.'
sounds like Phil Woods.
It's a diffrent tune

It should be forbidden to play this tune after Bird

We
Just not an interesting solo. Agree.
Noise...
man that pianist was terrible
disagree,... he's on another level, really listen to what he's doing......
