Great project and a lovely piece of timber. Just a little reminder to other woodworkers out there: cocobolo contains an allergen called "dalbergione", which is common to many rosewood species, and for many people this allergen can cause a serious reaction. So I'd recommend always wearing a respirator when working with cocobolo 👍
Love it! Thanks for the inspiration. Don’t own a Robust Lathe (no way to get it in my basement workshop) but I truly enjoy using their tool rests, BEST upgrade I made to my current lathe.
Hi Tim, Here in England the weapon you were describing is a cosh. Used by a robber, filled with sand and used to hit the base of the neck or head to knock a person unconscious. The designs of cosh’s differed over time but your first description was very close. I think the Irish called them a cudgel which was a short stick or club. Best of luck old chap and thanks for the instructional video. I’m going to make that opener.
Well done, Tim. Looks fantastic. I also did a bottle opener month ago. And I would say, it looks as nice as yours ;) The finish with Yorkshire Grit is awasome and the surface gets so smooth.
First time watching your videos here. You seem like a lot of fun! A lot of other turning channels are a bit boring and monotone. I look forward to watching more of your videos! Thanks for the demo!
That is a very neat opener design, would make a great gift! I think that shape you are thinking of is a sap, or a sap jack or black jack, which was an elongated pear shape leather pouch filled with lead shot, you could whack someone on the head and knock them out, but it does not leave a mark like a billy club would, I think they are often illegal to carry around these days, but that would vary by your location. VERY nice wood too! Cheers from Tokyo!
Nice little project. I live in Central America where this grows. Do you have any problems with the dust from the Cocobolo as it is renowned as a serious allergenic and can cause nasty reactions in some people?
Tim, I love the project. I have a question for you on your Abranet sanding system. What is the backing pad that you are using? I have looked at the Mirka site and I can't see anything there. Thanks.
What kind of chuck are you using these days? Was that a one-way stronghold?..noo. also, where can I find an adapter that would look similar to the mandrel you used at the end? I need to adapt some ¾"ø chucks to fit on my 1"x8tpi spindle.
Where can I purchase Yorkshire Grit? the place listed in the US to sell has been out of stock for months and don't answer the phone or return calls. (The Walnut Log)
Yorkshire grit is not a finish as such. It is a stage in preparing the wood to take a finish. I haven't tried but it probably works ok on cocobolo because it's a hard and oily wood (as you say) but with most timbers you would want to add a finish of your choice after the YG. You would get an even better finish if you sanded to 240 grit, used a sanding sealer (any), then Yorkshire grit original, then YG Microfine. Hampshire Sheen High Gloss will give a durable finish. Some people would think this was too fussy!
"Jack club" ... are you thinking of the cop's billy club ? not the modern one we see a 'side handle' but the classic club shape we see in many old cartoons.
12th man it is called a blackjack and it's an actual piece of Spun half inch cable with lead on the end of it and it is wrapped in leather in triple stitched I own one of them and it is a very very deadly and dangerous thing they are called a blackjack
Wouldn't it be easier to mark the hole to be drilled on a square blank, mount in the chuck, drill/tap it, then take it out of the chuck, and finish turning between centers? Just seems overly complicated using the chuck from start to finish and having to flip and blend everything together.
Your finish is wax based, and after extended use, will dull. I always apply CA over cocobolo, after wiping it with alcohol and drying it with a paper towel at ~ 1500 RPM. In over three years, I have never had a failure.
Tim, I love your antics in between making fantastic wood turnings. Never stop. Heart emoji.
Beautiful piece Tim.
I made a few of these as Christmas gifts last year, they’re great! Ruth is awesome to work with as well. Nicely done, Tim!
Love the look. great project.
it looks like a short version of a draft beer pull handle. love the wood.

Great project, I’ve been looking at trying these for awhile now, sold! Thanks for sharing Tim.

Fun project, and a good result.

VERY nice wood too!

"Screw condom," hahahahaha!
SPAM
I've never seen one that shape before. If you hadn't told us, I wouldn't have known what it was!
Try a large coffee filter in the place of a towel. Really gets the wax flowing. I use it for CA and other friction polishes also
Merci pour cette vidéo 👍👍👍
Nice one Tim!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous
great video
Hey Tim, what brand of chuck is that - I have a Nova but they do not make jaws that deep - Thanks
Tim I made the same thing, after watching this video, used blood wood. Turned out bitchen... great turning.

Good video,!
Thanks for the great video Tim.
What were you attaching the Abranet to?
Thank you

Tim, can you remind me and provide a link for the sanding/paper system you use? Thanks.

Curious why your receptacles and switched are sideways?
Who sells these and where can I buy them from

Who are and what have you done with Tim-almost didn’t recognize the guy behind the lathe. Nice project-bottoms up-it’s brew o’clock, 🍻
I think you're thinking of a Black Jack, maybe?

A Blackjack upside the head lol

You're talking about a blackjack.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning!
OMG, we come to You Tube to AVOID commercials. Bye.
Okay... That is not a bottle opener
I only clicked on this to see the unusual opener, and you didn't even show it very well.
Love your vids and it is 5 O'clock somewhere
