I'm such a fan of Ruth's products. I've purchased stopper parts elsewhere, but after buying from Ruth I became a loyal customer. Thanks for the great demonstration, Mr Jacobson.
Just got a lathe from a friend and a beginner turning chisels for Christmas and I love it. I turned a simple spindle and a wand to start. I hope to make some of your projects in the future. thanks- Andrew
Hi Carl,i bought Ruth's kit earlier in the year and really like doing the stoppers, great job mate and Ruth is really nice to deal with as well..cheers Mick!!!
This system looks much nicer than using a jacobs chuck and threaded rod, even just for having the exact sizing of the bottle stopper base built into the mandrel. Nice work Carl.
The bottle stoppers look great Carl, I haven't made stoppers for a long time. Watching your video today reminded my I have several kits at home and I think I need to have a go at turning them again. Thank you. Happy New Year, Bob
The young ladies that i work with loved it when i gave them winestoppers. I was told by them, and also from others, that I needed to keep the tops of the stoppers rounded rather than pointed. If you are drinking a bottle of wine and you want to stopper it you usually tap it in with the palm of your hand. The pointed stopper is to uncomfortable... Even if it is an interesting shape. Keep up the great work an Happy New Years!
Hey Carl, hope you enjoy turning the pen blanks, and thank you for the mention too! Can't wait to see what kind of pens you make, I always love to see what people do with the sagebrush blanks. Great resource for bottle stopper chucks, it took me a while to find a decent one that works, but I may have to give the Ruth Niles a shot too. I really like all the features it has. Thanks for another great video, nice work on those stoppers too.
Carl this definitely is a great kit for stoppers. I made about 40 for Christmas gifts this year!!! As for the colored plywood I sand it to 600 and then use EEE and Shellawax for the finish and it works great. i just put a rough 2 x 2 block into a chuck, flatten the end, drill it and use a parting tool to make the 7/8" recess. Make it so a nickel fits in and your good to go.
Another project I have never made Carl (the wife always makes sure the there's nothing left in the bottle) Great project though and looking forward to your 2015 videos. All the best Tony
Thanks Carl. I've used the Niles kit for a few months now and really like it. Don't know how your lathe is set up but, I used a piece of all-thread to lock the MT in my headstock. Don't really care to see the whole kit come slipping out at me! LOL Take care, Dave
On the end of the rod is there a double nut to keep the rod from moving? I just switch from Woodcraft bottle stopper kit to the Ruth Niles kit. Ruth saids hello Carol.
Andrew Betschman Andrew, I have a wing nut and washer that I tighten down and it works good for me. Just whatever to secure the MT to the headstock. Take care, Dave
Hi Carl! Very nice stoppers! I tried the Ruth Niles ones, they have the advantage of being stainless steel so they do not corrode! Cheers and Happy Holidays! Daniel
+Daniel Vilarino Not only are they stainless (which is very important), but they have machined threads (rather than rolled/pressed). Top-notch quality, cannot be beat.
Very nice, however it has been a very busy day and that music almost put me to sleep, LOL. Looks like a neat system, I have only made one bottle stopper but I think I will be making more to go along with the limoncello I make in the Summer.
Hey Carl, great video as usual, thanks for the shout out. One small correction the Laminated Colored Wood is technically not plywood because the grain is all in the same direction so that it turns long grain like any solid wood. There are many different colors, but they are more subtle since they cam from the original company who developed this process. Also... yes, dry sanding is great to 220/320 but not much more is needed since it is made from Birch veneer. Finishing is best with a solvent finish like shellac or Lacquer. I have used Doc's Pens Plus on it and that buffs up great. For Pens you can also use CA Glue. Water based finishes are nor recommended the colors can bleed.
Just bought a starter kit from Ruth Niles and found excellent service as well as quality products, looking forward to making some bottle stoppers. Loved the music on this video, who is it ?
I have the ruth niles mandrel, but after i drill a hole, and then I try and mount on the mandrel, the hole gets too big, and the wood wobbles and won't stay on unless it's between centers. Any suggestions?
Love all your videos.. Got a call for some bottle stoppers. I have in my shop several of Ruths stoppers. I have a larger section of #302 model .. My question i was unable to find a good set of instructions using the #302 series, ie No thread.. Any help would be appreciated .. Thanks Postalbob
How do you get the threads to stay in the wood. When I tried the wood tightens up on the Ruth miles mandrel that is designed to cut the threads but after I un thread the finished piece there are no threads inside the hole. And the stopper does not thread in just falls out. Any tips?
It might be the type of wood you're using. Hard woods work best. Another trick is to use thin CA glue. Tread the piece on and off, fill the threads with CA glue, let it dry, and thread it back on to the mandrel.
It is difficult to get imperial drill bits in UK, so can you give metric sizes , dose Ruth Niles do metric thread on the mandrels ??? Thanks Carl ,,another great video ,,Regards Alf

I just made a Rosewood captive ring wine stopper. Had to make my own tools because of how precise it was!
Mark Parrott I'd like to see a pic, thewoodshop.tv

Seem like great system there, I'm going to have to look in to that
Mike Fulton It's a really easy system to use.

Unique kitchen drawer knobs
***** Great idea
OK, thanks you.
Un fenómeno.
Love the music
It looks like you were cutting "uphill" at 4:14 in the video. Comments?
Alan Erickson Yes I was, I made my final pass downhill though.
That's some nice music. When did the Saturday Night Live house band do a sound alike of Desperado?
Thanks for the video
Thank you Eric!
Just bought a starter kit from Ruth Niles and found excellent service as well as quality products, looking forward to making some bottle stoppers. Loved the music on this video, who is it ?
Hola Carls que mezcla usas para lijar tus bonitos trabajos en el torno ?
No estoy seguro de lo que quieres decir?
I have the ruth niles mandrel, but after i drill a hole, and then I try and mount on the mandrel, the hole gets too big, and the wood wobbles and won't stay on unless it's between centers. Any suggestions?
I've had that happen a couple times but it was only with soft wood.
Carl Jacobson thank you..
I’m going to try a different drill bit, but the wood was walnut and should have worked fine..
Good little project. When you say your going to "put the link up" I never see the links. where are they?
***** Thanks for clearing that up Ron
Hay. I was wondering were I get the kit. I can’t find one for my lathe. My head stock is 1 1/4” 8 TPI
Thank you very much Bob! I haven't used that style before. Maybe Ruth has something on her website that would help.

Thank you Alf, I'm not sure if she dose, here's her website nilesbottlestoppers.com/
where can I get dyed plywood like that? Possible to make it?
Try chefwarekits.com/
Carl, what kind of adhesive do you prefer for holding wood stopper to hardware?
+JSEquineVideos I use Titebond 2
Fantastic video Carl!! Thank you! What kind of beeswax do you use and where can I find it?
+Frank Sears Thank you Frank! I think this is Paste wax, but I've switched to Howard beeswax and orange oil you can find it at Home Depot.
Thanks Carl!
So I'm trying to find the plywood you were talking about. Does Walter have a website?
I think he just has a FB page.
I am fairly sure that your dark mystery wood is mora...
The dark plywood looks like gun stock plywood!
Nick Jensen I think you're right
